I'm going to tell you about an affliction I suffer from.

And I have a funny feeling that quite a few of you

suffer from it as well.

When I'm walking around an art gallery,

美術館では多く絵画が展示されていますが

rooms and rooms full of paintings,

部屋から部屋へと歩いていて

after about 15 or 20 minutes,

20分もしないうちに気付くのです

I realize I'm not thinking about the paintings.

自分が絵画のことなんて

I'm not connecting to them.

ろくに考えていないことに

Instead, I'm thinking about that cup of coffee

代わりに私の頭に浮かぶのは一杯のコーヒー・・

I desperately need to wake me up.

目覚ましの一杯がどうしても必要だと

I'm suffering from gallery fatigue.

私が苦しんでいるのは「美術館疲れ」です

How many of you out there suffer from --

皆さんの中にもきっと・・・

yes. Ha ha, ha ha!

やっぱりね

Now, sometimes you might last longer

20分以上持つこともあれば

than 20 minutes, or even shorter,

そんなに持たないこともあります

but I think we all suffer from it. And do you have

いずれにせよ悩みは同じです そしてそれに

the accompanying guilt?

罪悪感を抱くことはないですか？

For me, I look at the paintings on the wall

壁に掛かった絵を眺めていて 私は思います

and I think, somebody has decided to put them there,

展示した人は この絵には この壁に飾るだけの価値が

thinks they're good enough to be on that wall,

あると思って展示したのだろうけど

but I don't always see it.

自分はろくに観てもいない

In fact, most of the time I don't see it.

そう 私は大抵の絵は観もせずに

And I leave feeling actually unhappy.

そして悲しい気持ちでそこを去るのです

I feel guilty and unhappy with myself,

自分自身に対して罪悪感と悲しみを覚えます

rather than thinking there's something wrong with the painting,

この気持ちを絵のせいにするよりも

I think there's something wrong with me.

私自身に原因があるのだと思うのです

And that's not a good experience, to leave a gallery like that.

そんな風に美術館をあとにするのは あまりいいことではないですよね

(Laughter)

The thing is, I think we should give ourselves a break.

もう少し気楽にいけばいいんじゃないでしょうか

If you think about going into a restaurant,

レストランに行ったとして

when you look at the menu, are you expected to order

メニューを見ますね そこに載っているものを

every single thing on the menu?

一つ残らず注文しますか？

No! You select.

しませんよね 選びますよね

If you go into a department store to buy a shirt,

デパートにシャツを買いにいって

are you going to try on every single shirt

そこにあるシャツ全部試着して

and want every single shirt?

全部買おうと思いますか？

Of course not, you can be selective. It's expected.

そんなことはないですね 選ぶのが当然のことなんです

How come, then, it's not so expected

それなら何故 美術館では

to be selective when we go to an art gallery?

選り好みをしようと思わないのでしょうか？

Why are we supposed to have a connection with every single painting?

本当に一枚一枚の絵全てに 関心を 持つべきなのでしょうか？

Well I'm trying to take a different approach.

そこで私はちょっと考え方を変えてみました

And there's two things I do:

私が美術館でやることは２つです

When I go into a gallery, first of all, I go quite fast,

会場に入ったら まずはとにかく素早くまわります

and I look at everything, and I pinpoint the ones

まず全体に目を通します そして何故か

that make me slow down for some reason or other.

足を止めてしまう作品に集中します

I don't even know why they make me slow down, but something

その作品の何に惹かれるのかわからなくても

pulls me like a magnet

磁石のように惹かれることってあるものです

and then I ignore all the others, and I just go to that painting.

他の作品は全て無視して その作品だけに集中します

So it's the first thing I do is, I do my own curation.

まず自前のキュレーションをするんです

I choose a painting. It might just be one painting in 50.

選ぶ絵は 50枚に1枚しかない かもしれません

And then the second thing I do is I stand in front of that painting,

そして２番目にやることは その絵の前に立って

and I tell myself a story about it.

自分自身に物語りをして聞かせるのです

Why a story? Well, I think that we are wired,

なぜ物語かって？ それはそうせざるをえないというか

our DNA tells us to tell stories.

物語りをせよとDNAが命じるからです

We tell stories all the time about everything,

私たちはいつも何かについて話をしています

and I think we do it because the world is kind of a crazy, chaotic place,

and sometimes stories, we're trying to make sense of the world a little bit,

trying to bring some order to it.

Why not apply that to our looking at paintings?

So I now have this sort of restaurant menu

だから今ではレストランのメニューのように

visiting of art galleries.

美術館の絵を見ているのです

There are three paintings I'm going to show you now

これから３枚の絵をご覧いただこうと思います

that are paintings that made me stop in my tracks

それらの絵は私に足を止めさせ

and want to tell stories about them.

物語りを作ろうと思わせた絵です

The first one needs little introduction --

１枚目についての説明はほとんど不要でしょう

"Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer,

ヨハネス・フェルメール作「真珠の耳飾りの少女」です

17th-century Dutch painter.

彼は17世紀オランダの画家で

This is the most glorious painting.

この絵は中でも最も見事な絵でしょう

I first saw it when I was 19,

私は19歳のときこの絵に出会いました

and I immediately went out and got a poster of it,

そして展示スペースを出るや否やポスターを買い求め

and in fact I still have that poster. 30 years later it's hanging in my house.

30年前に買ったそのポスターは今も私の家に飾ってあります

It's accompanied me everywhere I've gone,

以来どこへ行くにもこの絵は私と一緒でした

I never tire of looking at her.

彼女のことを見飽きることはありません

What made me stop in my tracks about her to begin with

最初に私を惹きつけたのは

was just the gorgeous colors he uses

その華麗な色使い

and the light falling on her face.

そして少女の顔を照らす光でした

But I think what's kept me still coming back

しかし時を経て何度も何度も見直してみて

year after year is another thing, and that is

別の何かに惹かれていることに気付きました

the look on her face, the conflicted look on her face.

それはこの少女の何か葛藤を感じさせるような表情でした

I can't tell if she's happy or sad,

彼女が喜んでいるのか悲しんでいるのか

and I change my mind all the time.

それが未だにわかりません

So that keeps me coming back.

その謎が私を惹きつけて止まないのです

One day, 16 years after I had this poster on my wall,

この絵のポスターを壁に貼ってから16年経ったある日

I lay in bed and looked at her,

and I suddenly thought, I wonder what

the painter did to her to make her look like that.

フェルメールは一体何をして 彼女にこんな顔をさせたのだろう

And it was the first time I'd ever thought that

そんな風に考えたことはそれまでなかったのですが

the expression on her face is actually reflecting

少女の表情はフェルメールへの感情を

how she feels about him.

表しているのではないかと

Always before I'd thought of it as a portrait of a girl.

それまで私はこの絵を とある少女の肖像画と考えてきました

Now I began to think of it as a portrait of a relationship.

でも これはある人間関係を描いたものだと 思うようになりました

And I thought, well, what is that relationship?

その関係とは一体どんなものだったのだろう？

So I went to find out. I did some research and discovered,

そう思って調べてみてわかったことがあります

we have no idea who she is.

この少女が誰か全くわからないのです

In fact, we don't know who any of the models

それどころか フェルメール作品のモデルは

in any of Vermeer's paintings are,

一人として誰かわからないのです

and we know very little about Vermeer himself.

フェルメール自身についてもよくわかっていません

Which made me go, "Yippee!"

そこで私は思ったのです 「やったね！」と

I can do whatever I want, I can come up with whatever story I want to.

何でも思い通り気の向くまま お話を作ることができる

So here's how I came up with the story.

そこで私はこんな風に考えてみました

First of all, I thought,

何よりもまず

I've got to get her into the house.

彼女を家に入れなきゃいけない

How does Vermeer know her?

フェルメールは彼女をどうやって知ったのだろう？

Well, there've been suggestions that

フェルメール自身の

she is his 12-year-old daughter.

12歳の娘だという説があります

The daughter at the time was 12 when he painted the painting.

絵が描かれた当時 娘は12歳でした

And I thought, no, it's a very intimate look,

でも 私は違うと思いました この親密さをたたえた眼差しは

but it's not a look a daughter gives her father.

娘が父親を見つめるそれではありません

For one thing, in Dutch painting of the time,

もう一つは 当時の オランダの絵画で

if a woman's mouth was open, it was indicating sexual availability.

モデルの開いた口は その女性が 性的対象になりえたことを表し

It would have been inappropriate for Vermeer

自身の娘をそんな風に描くことは

to paint his daughter like that.

フェルメールにとっておかしなことです

So it's not his daughter, but it's somebody

ですから娘ではない しかし

close to him, physically close to him.

それは画家の身近にいた 親しい人物です

Well, who else would be in the house?

では 他に家にいたのは誰か

A servant, a lovely servant.

召使いです とっても可愛い召使いです

So, she's in the house.

さて これで彼女は家の中です

How do we get her into the studio?

では次はアトリエに入れなければなりません

We don't know very much about Vermeer,

フェルメールは謎の多い画家ですが

but the little bits that we do know, one thing we know

わかっていることもあります それは

is that he married a Catholic woman, they lived with her mother

カトリックの女性と結婚し その母親と同居していたこと

in a house where he had his own room

そこに彼だけの部屋がありました

where he -- his studio. He also had 11 children.

彼のアトリエです また 彼には11人の子供がいました

It would have been a chaotic, noisy household.

それは混沌とした 騒音に満ちた家庭だったことでしょう

And if you've seen Vermeer's paintings before,

you know that they're incredibly calm and quiet.

静寂や静謐さを感じられたことでしょう

How does a painter paint such calm, quiet paintings with 11 kids around?

11人も子供がいる中で あんな静寂を描くことはできません

Well, he compartmentalizes his life.

彼はその生活を切り離していたのでしょう

He gets to his studio, and he says, "Nobody comes in here.

「アトリエには誰も入ってはならない」と言って

Not the wife, not the kids. Okay, the maid can come in and clean."

妻も 子供も入れません でも 召使いだけは 掃除のために入れます

She's in the studio. He's got her in the studio, they're together.

彼は召使いである彼女を部屋に招き入れます そして彼らは二人っきり

And he decides to paint her.

画家は彼女を描くことにします

He has her wear very plain clothes.

彼は少女の衣装を ごく簡素なものにしました

Now, all of the women, or most of the women in Vermeer's other paintings

フェルメールの描く女性はほとんど皆

wore velvet, silk, fur, very sumptuous materials.

ベルベットやシルク 毛皮など とても豪華なものを身にまとっています

This is very plain; the only thing that isn't plain

でも少女のそれは質素です 唯一質素でないもの

is her pearl earring.

それが真珠の耳飾りです

Now, if she's a servant, there is no way she could afford

彼女は一介の召使いですから 真珠の耳飾りなんて

a pair of pearl earrings.

持っているはずがありません

So those are not her pearl earrings. Whose are they?

では彼女の物でないとすると それは誰の物でしょうか？

We happen to know, there's a list of Catharina, the wife's clothes.

妻カタリーナの持っていた衣装のリストが見つかっています

Amongst them a yellow coat with white fur,

その中には 白い毛皮の縁のついた黄色のコート

a yellow and black bodice,

黄色と黒の胴着など

and you see these clothes on lots of other paintings,

彼の他の作品に描かれた女性たちが

different women in the paintings, Vermeer's paintings.

身につけていた衣服が載っています

So clearly, her clothes were lent to various different women.

従ってカタリーナの衣装は 色々な女性に貸し出されていたわけです

It's not such a leap of faith to take

ですから真珠の耳飾りも

that that pearl earring actually belongs to his wife.

奥さんのものだと考えて差し支えなさそうです

So we've got all the elements for our story.

さて 物語に必要な材料は全て揃いました

She's in the studio with him for a long time.

少女は長い時間を画家と過ごします

These paintings took a long time to make.

絵を描く間の長い時間を

They would have spent the time alone, all that time.

いつも 二人っきりで過ごします

She's wearing his wife's pearl earring.

彼女の耳には奥さんの耳飾り

She's gorgeous. She obviously loves him. She's conflicted.

彼女はかくも美しく 画家に恋し 悩んでいます

And does the wife know? Maybe not.

奥さんは気付いているのでしょうか？

And if she doesn't, well --

もし気付いてないのだとすると・・・

that's the story.

そうやって物語ができます

(Laughter)

The next painting I'm going to talk about

次にご紹介する絵は

is called "Boy Building a House of Cards" by Chardin.

シャルダン作「カードのお城」です

He's an 18th-century French painter best known for his still lifes,

シャルダンは18世紀フランスの画家で 静物画がよく知られていますが

but he did occasionally paint people.

時々人間も描きました

And in fact, he painted four versions of this painting,

実はこの絵には4つのバージョンがあって

different boys building houses of cards, all concentrated.

そのいずれも男の子が無心で トランプの家を作っている絵です

I like this version the best, because some of the boys

中でも私はこの絵が好きです なぜかというと

are older and some are younger, and to me, this one,

他の少年たちは少し年上だったり年下だったりしますが

like Goldilocks's porridge, is just right.

ゴルディロックスのお粥みたいに これがぴったりくるんです

He's not quite a child, and he's not quite a man.

子供とも大人とも言えない微妙な年頃

He's absolutely balanced between innocence and experience,

子供の無邪気さと大人への一歩との間で 絶妙なバランスを保っています

and that made me stop in my tracks in front of this painting.

それがこの絵の前で私の足を止めさせました

And I looked at his face. It's like a Vermeer painting a bit.

この顔を見て下さい どこかフェルメールの絵を思わせます

The light comes in from the left, his face is bathed

左から差す光が彼の顔を照らしています

in this glowing light. It's right in the center of the painting,

それがちょうど絵の中心にあたります

and you look at it, and I found that when I was looking at it,

この絵を見つめている時

I was standing there going,

私はこう語りかけるのです

"Look at me. Please look at me."

「こっちを見て　　　　　 ねぇ こっちを見て」と

And he didn't look at me. He was still looking at his cards,

でも彼はこっちを向いてくれません ずっとカードを見つめています

and that's one of the seductive elements of this painting is,

それがこの絵の魅力の一つなのですが

he's so focused on what he's doing that he doesn't look at us.

男の子はカードに夢中で決して振り向きません

And that is, to me, the sign of a masterpiece,

それこそが 私にとってこの絵が傑作たる所以で

of a painting when there's a lack of resolution.

答えがないということ

He's never going to look at me.

彼は絶対にこちらを向くことはない・・

So I was thinking of a story where,

そこで私は考えるのです

if I'm in this position, who could be there looking at him?

彼を見つめている人物がいるとしたら それは一体誰なのか

Not the painter, I don't want to think about the painter.

画家ではありません そうは考えたくない

I'm thinking of an older version of himself.

私はこの少年の成長した姿を思い浮かべます

He's a man, a servant, an older servant looking at this younger servant,

年上の男の召使いが この年若い 召使いを見つめています

saying, "Look at me. I want to warn you about

「こっちを見て これから君の身に起こることで

what you're about to go through. Please look at me."

言っておきたいことがある どうか こっちを見て」

And he never does.

でも彼は決して振り向かない

And that lack of resolution, the lack of resolution in "Girl with a Pearl Earring" --

それがなんとも不思議な想いを抱かせます 「真珠の耳飾りの少女」の

we don't know if she's happy or sad.

少女の気持ちを知ることはできません

I've written an entire novel about her,

私はその小説も書きましたが

and I still don't know if she's happy or sad.

それでもやっぱりわからないのです

Again and again, back to the painting,

何度も何度も その絵に戻ってきて

looking for the answer, looking for the story to fill in that gap.

この心の隙間を埋める答えを探します

And we may make a story, and it satisfies us momentarily,

そして私たちはストーリーを作って 束の間の満足を覚えます

but not really, and we come back again and again.

でもそれは本当の満足ではなく また絵に戻ってくることになるのです

The last painting I'm going to talk about

最後にご紹介する絵は

is called "Anonymous" by anonymous. (Laughter)

作者不詳の「不詳」です （笑い）

This is a Tudor portrait bought by the National Portrait Gallery.

ナショナル・ポートレート・ギャラリー所蔵の テューダー家の人物の肖像画です

They thought it was a man named Sir Thomas Overbury,

トーマス・オーバーベリー卿と考えられていましたが

and then they discovered that it wasn't him,

そうではないことが判明し

and they have no idea who it is.

結局誰かは判らないままです

Now, in the National Portrait Gallery,

肖像画美術館で

if you don't know the biography of the painting,

描かれている人物が誰かわからないなんて

it's kind of useless to you.

全く意味がないですね

They can't hang it on the wall, because they don't know who he is.

誰だかわからない肖像画を展示しておくわけにもいかず

So unfortunately, this orphan spends most of his time in storage,

残念ながらこの名無しさんは 他の多くの名無しさんと一緒に

along with quite a number of other orphans,

ほとんどずっと倉庫で過ごしています

some of them some beautiful paintings.

中にはこんなに美しい絵もあるのに

This painting made me stop in my tracks for three reasons:

私がこの絵に立ち止まる理由は３つあります

One is the disconnection between his mouth

まず一つ目は 笑みをたたえた口元と

that's smiling and his eyes that are wistful.

もの言いたげな眼差しとのギャップです

He's not happy, and why isn't he happy?

幸せではないのかしら？ そうだとするとそれはなぜ？

The second thing that really attracted me

私を惹きつけてやまない二つ目の理由は

were his bright red cheeks.

彼の明るく上気した頬です

He is blushing. He's blushing for his portrait being made!

彼は赤くなっています 肖像画を描かれることに照れている

This must be a guy who blushes all the time.

彼はいつもこんな風に 照れ屋さんだったに違いありません

What is he thinking about that's making him blush?

でも何を考えてこんなに赤くなっているんでしょう？

The third thing that made me stop in my tracks

私がこの絵に足を止めた三つ目の理由は

is his absolutely gorgeous doublet.

彼が着ている素晴らしく豪華な上着です

Silk, gray, those beautiful buttons.

グレーのシルクで きれいなボタンがついています

And you know what it makes me think of,

それを見て私が何を思ったかと言えば

is it's sort of snug and puffy; it's like a duvet spread over a bed.

暖かくてふわふわの まるでベッドの上に広げられた羽毛布団

I kept thinking of beds and red cheeks,

私はいつもベッドとこの赤い頬を思います

and of course I kept thinking of sex when I looked at him,

つまり彼を見るとセックスのことを考えてしまうんです

and I thought, is that what he's thinking about?

もしかして彼もそのことを考えていたのでは？

And I thought, if I'm going to make a story,

もし私がお話を作るとしたら

what's the last thing I'm going to put in there?

他に加えるべき要素は何だろう？

Well, what would a Tudor gentleman be preoccupied with?

テューダーの男が考えていたことって？

And I thought, well, Henry VIII, okay.

例えばヘンリー8世はどうかしら？

He'd be preoccupied with his inheritance, with his heir.

彼の頭は跡継ぎのことで一杯だったでしょう

Who is going to inherit his name and his fortune?

彼の立場と財産を受け継ぐべきは誰か？

You put all those together, and you've got your story

それら全部を合わせて この絵が起こさせる胸騒ぎを鎮めるための

to fill in that gap that makes you keep coming back.

物語の出来上がりです

Now, here's the story.

さてその物語とは・・

It's short.

そんなに長いものではありません

"Rosy"

『ローズィ』

I am still wearing the white brocade doublet Caroline gave me.

僕は今だにキャロラインがくれた白い錦織の上着を着ている

It has a plain high collar, detachable sleeves

シンプルな高い襟の 袖が取り外せる上着

and intricate buttons of twisted silk thread,

シルクのより糸でできたボタンを

set close together so that the fit is snug.

きちんと留めて身体にぴったりと合うように着ている

The doublet makes me think of a coverlet on the vast bed.

この上着はあの大きなベッドカバーのことを思わせる

Perhaps that was the intention.

きっとそれが狙いだったんだろう

I first wore it at an elaborate dinner her parents held in our honor.

初めてこの上着を着たのは 彼女のご両親が僕らのために開いた晩餐会

I knew even before I stood up to speak

立ち上がって話し始める前から

that my cheeks were inflamed.

僕の頬は赤くなっていた

I have always flushed easily, from physical exertion,

身体を使ったり ワインを飲んだり

from wine, from high emotion.

As a boy, I was teased by my sisters and by schoolboys,

but not by George.

Only George could call me Rosy.

I would not allow anyone else.

He managed to make the word tender.

When I made the announcement, George did not

turn rosy, but went pale as my doublet.

He should not have been surprised.

彼が驚くなんておかしなことだ

It has been a common assumption

僕がいつか彼の従妹と結婚することは

that I would one day marry his cousin.

誰もが予想していたことだ

But it is difficult to hear the words aloud.

でもはっきり声にして聞くのは辛かったのだろう

I know, I could barely utter them.

僕だってやっとのことで打ち明けられたんだ

Afterwards, I found George on the terrace overlooking the kitchen garden.

その後でテラスから調理場を眺めているジョージを見つけた

Despite drinking steadily all afternoon, he was still pale.

午後中ずっと飲んでいたのに 彼はやはり青白い顔をしていた

We stood together and watched the maids cut lettuces.

僕たちは立ったままレタスを切る召使いを見ていた

"What do you think of my doublet?" I asked.

「この上着素敵でしょう？」 僕は訊いてみた

He glanced at me. "That collar looks to be strangling you."

彼はちらりと見て「襟が苦しそうだ」と言った

"We will still see each other," I insisted.

「また会えるよね？」

"We can still hunt and play cards and attend court.

「また一緒に狩やトランプをしたり 宮廷に出たりできるよね？」

Nothing need change."

「何も変わらないよね」

George did not speak.

"I am 23 years old. It is time for me to marry

「僕はもう23だし そろそろ結婚して・・」

and produce an heir. It is expected of me."

「・・跡取りをつくらなきゃいけない それが僕の義務だから」

George drained another glass of claret and turned to me.

ジョージは赤ワインを飲み干すと振り返って言った

"Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials, James.

「結婚おめでとう ジェイムズ・・

I'm sure you'll be content together."

「・・ 君たちの幸せを願っているよ」

He never used my nickname again.

彼は二度と僕を件のあだ名で呼ぶことはなかった
