But we still live in a world

where the color of our skin not only gives a first impression,

ကိုယ့် အသားအရောင်က ပထမဆုံး ခံစားချက်ကို ပေးရုံသာမက ထာဝရ ကျန်ရှိနေမှာ

but a lasting one that remains.

ဖြစ်တဲ့ ကမ္ဘာကြီးထဲမှာ နေထိုင်နေကြတာပါ။

I was born in a family full of colors.

ကျွန်မက အရောင်တွေပြည့်စုံနေတဲ့ မိသားစုတစ်ခုမှာ မွေးဖွားခဲ့တာပါ။

My father is the son of a maid

အဖေက အိမ်ဖော်ရဲ့သား၊

from whom he inherited an intense dark chocolate tone.

အဲဒီကနေ ညိုနက်တဲ့ ချောကလက် အသားအရောင် အမွေရခဲ့တယ်။

He was adopted by those who I know as my grandparents.

The matriarch, my grandma,

has a porcelain skin and cotton-like hair.

My grandpa was somewhere between a vanilla and strawberry yogurt tone,

like my uncle and my cousin.

Growing up in this family,

ဒီမိသားစုထဲမှာ ကြီးပြင်းလာတော့

color was never important for me.

အရောင်ဆိုတာ ဘယ်တုန်းကမှ အရေးမပါခဲ့ဘူး။

Outside home, however, things were different soon.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အိမ်အပြင်ကျတော့ မကြာခင်ပဲ အခြေအနေတွေကေ မတူတော့ဘူးလေ။

Color had many other meanings.

အရောင်တွေမှာ အခြားအဓိပ္ပါယ် အများကြီး ရှိခဲ့တယ်။

I remember my first drawing lessons in school

ကျောင်းက ပထမဆုံး ပုံဆွဲသင်ခန်းစာ တွေကို ဝိရောဓိ ခံစားချက်

as a bunch of contradictory feelings.

တစ်ပြုံကြီးနဲ့ မှတ်မိနေတယ်။

It was exciting and creative

စိတ်လှုပ်ရှားစရာကောင်းပြီး ဖန်တီးနိုင်စွမ်းရှိတယ်ဆိုပေမဲ့

but I never understood the unique flesh-colored pencil.

ထူးခြားပြီး အသားထူတဲ့ ရောင်စုံခဲတံတွေကို တစ်ခါမှကို နားမလည်ခဲ့ဘူး။

I was made of flesh but I wasn't pink.

ကျွန်မက အသားကနေလုပ်ထားပေမဲ့ ပန်းရောင်မဟုတ်ဘူး။

My skin was brown, and people said I was black.

I was seven years old with a mess of colors in my head.

Later,

when I took my cousin to school,

just because I was walking alone on the beach with European friends.

And many times,

အကြိမ်များစွာပဲ

visiting my grandma or friends in upper class buildings,

အထက်တန်းစား အဆောက်အဦတွေက အဖိုးအဖွား၊၊ မိတ်ဆွေတွေကို သွားလည်တိုင်း

I was invited not to use the main elevator.

ပင်မ ဓာတ်လှေခါးကို မသုံးဖို့ ပြောခံရတယ်။

Because in the end,

အကြောင်းက အဆုံးမှာတ​ော့

with this color and this hair,

ဒီအရောင်၊ ဒီဆံပင်နဲ့ဆို

I cannot belong to some places.

အချို့နေရာတွဟော ကျွန်မနဲ့ မသက်ဆိုင်လို့တဲ့လေ။

In some way,

တစ်နည်းနည်းနဲ့

I get to used to it and accept part of it.

ဒါကို ကျင့်သားရပြီး အစိတ်အပိုင်း တစ်ရပ်အဖြစ် လက်ခံခဲ့ပါတယ်။

However, something inside of me keeps revolving and struggling.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်မကိုယ်တွင်းက တစ်ခုခုကတော့ တော်လှန်၊ ရုန်းကန်နေတယ်။

Years later I married a Spaniard.

နှစ်တွေကြာတော့ စပိန်သားတစ်ယောက်နဲ့ လက်ထပ်လိုက်တယ်။

But not any Spaniard.

I chose one with the skin color of a lobster when sunburnt.

Since then, a new question started to chase me.

အဲဒီကတည်းက မေးခွန်းသစ်တစ်ခုက ကျွန်မကို စလိုက်လာတယ်။

What will be the color of your children?

ကိုယ့်ကခလးတွေရဲ့ အသားအရောင် ဘာဖြစ်လိမ့်မလဲပေါ့။

As you can understand, this is my last concern.

အားလုံး နားလည်နိုင်သလို ဒါ ကျွန်မရဲ့ နောက်ဆုံး သောကပါ။

But thinking about it,

ဒါပေမဲ့ တွေးကြည့်လိုက်ဆော့

with my previous background,

အရင်က ဘဝနောက်ခံနဲ့ဆို

my story led me to make my personal exercise as a photographer.

ကျွန်မဇာတ်လမ်းက ဓာတ်ပုံသမားအဖြစ် တစ်ကိုယ်ရေ စွမ်းဆောင်မှုကို ဖြစ်စေခဲ့တယ်။

And that is how Humanae was born.

ဒါနဲ့ပဲ ဒါက Humanae ပေါက်ဖွားလာပုံပါ။

Humanae is a pursuit to highlight our true colors,

Humanæ ဟာ အစစ်အမှန်မဟုတ်တဲ့ လူမျိုးစုနဲ့ ဆက်စပ်နေတဲ့

rather than the untrue

အဖြူ၊ အနီ၊ အနက်၊ အဝါဆိုတာထက်

white, red, black or yellow associated with race.

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ အရောင်အစစ်တွေကို မီးမောင်းထိုးပေးတဲ့ ရှာဖွေမှုပါ။

It's a kind of game to question our codes.

ကျွန်တို့ရဲ့ ကုဒ်တွေကို မေးခွန်းထုတ်တဲ့ ကစားနည်းဆန်ပါတယ်။

It's a work in progress from a personal story to a global history.

ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဇာတ်လမ်းကနေ ကမ္ဘာလုံးဆိုင်ရာ သမိုင်းထိ ဆက်ဖြစ်နေတဲ့ အလုပ်တစ်ခုပါ။

I portray the subjects in a white background.

ပုဂ္ဂိုလ်တွေကို အဖြူရောင်နောက်ခံမှာ သရုပ်ဖော်ပါတယ်။

Then I choose an 11-pixel square from the nose,

ဒီနောက် နှာခေါင်းကနေ ၁၁ ပစ်ဇယ်ရှိတဲ့ စတုရန်းကို ရွေးပါတယ်၊

paint the background,

နောက်ခံကို ဆေးခြယ်ပြီး

and look for the corresponding color in the industrial palette, Pantone.

Pantone လုပ်ငန်းသုံး ဆေးစပ်ပြားထဲမှာ သင့်တော်ရာ အရောင်ရှာပါတယ်။

I started with my family and friends,

မိသားစုတွေ၊ မိတ်ဆွေတွေနဲ့ စတင်ခဲ့ပြီး

then more and more people joined the adventure,

နောက်တော့ စွန့်စားမှုမှာ လူတွေ ပိုပိုပြီး ပါဝင်လာတယ်။

thanks to public calls coming through the social media.

လူမှုရေး မီဒီယာတွေကနေလာတဲ့ အများ ပြည်သူ ခေါ်ဆိုမှုတွေရဲ့ ကျေးဇူးကြောင့်ပါ။

I thought that the main space to show my work was the Internet

ကျွန်မလက်ရာကို ပြသဖို့ အဓိကနေရာက အင်တာနက်လို့ တွေးမိတဲ့ အကြောင်းက

because I want an open concept that invites everybody

ကွန်ပြူတာနဲ့ သူတို့ရဲ့ ဦးနှောက် နှစ်ခုလုံးမှာ share ခလုတ်ကို တွန်းဖို့

to push the share button in both the computer and their brain.

လူတိုင်းကို ဖိတ်ကြားတဲ့ ပွင့်လင်းတဲ့ စိတ်ကူးတစ်ခု လိုချင်လို့ပါ။

The snowball started to roll.

နှင်းဘောလုံးက စလိမ့်သွားတယ်။

The project had a great welcome --

ပရောဂျက်ကို တစ်ခဲနက် ကြိုဆိုခဲ့ကြတယ်။

invitations, exhibitions,

ဖိတ်ကြားချက်တွေ၊ ပြပွဲတွေ၊

physical formats,

ရုပ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ ပုံစံတွေ၊

galleries and museums ...

ပန်းချီပြခန်းတွေ၊ ပြတိုက်တွေ

just happened.

ဖြစ်သွားခဲ့တော့တာပေါ့။

And among them, my favorite:

ဒါတွေအနက် ကျွန်မ အကြိုက်ဆုံးက

when Humanae occupies public spaces

Humanæ ဟာ အများပြည်သူ နေရာတွေမှာ နေရာယူပြီး

and appears in the street,

လမ်းတွေမှာ ပေါ်လာတဲ့အခါ

it fosters a popular debate

ဒါက အများကြိုက် စကားချေတင်ပွဲ တစ်ခုကို မြှင့်တင်ပေးပြီး

and creates a feeling of community.

အုပ်စုစိတ်ဓာတ်မျိုးကို ဖန်တီးပေးတာပါ။

I have portrayed more than 3,000 people

နိုင်ငံမျိုးစုံ ၁၃ ခု၊ ကမ္ဘာတစ်ခွင်က အမျိုးမျိုးသော မြို့ကြီး ၁၃ ခုက

in 13 different countries,

လူပေါင်း ၃၀၀၀ ကျော်ကို

19 different cities around the world.

Just to mention some of them --

In Paris, from the UNESCO Headquarters to a shelter.

ပါရီမှာ UNESCO ရုံးချုပ်ကနေ ဒုက္ခသည်စခန်းတစ်ခုထိပါ။

And students both in Switzerland and favelas in Rio de Janeiro.

Switzerland နဲ့ Rio de Janeiro မြို့စွန်း ရပ်ကွက်တွေ နှစ်ခုလုံးက ကျောင်းသားတွေ။

All kinds of beliefs,

ယုံကြည်မှုမျိုးစုံ၊

gender identities

ကျား၊ မ ထပ်တူကျမှုတွေ၊

or physical impairments,

(သို့) ရုပ်ပိုင်း အဟန့်အတားတွေ၊

a newborn or terminally ill.

မွေးကင်းစ (သို့) ရောဂါကျွမ်းနေသူတွေပါ။

We all together build Humanae.

Humanæ ကို အားလုံး အတူတကွ တည်ဆောက်ပါတယ်။

Those portraits make us rethink how we see each other.

ဒီပုံတူတွေက ကျွန်မတို့အချင်းချင်း ဘယ်လို မြင်ကြပုံကို ပြန်တွေးမိစေပါတယ်။

When modern science is questioning the race concept,

ခေတ်သစ် သိပ္ပံက လူမျိုးရေး အမြင်ကို မေးခွန်းထုတ်နေတဲ့အခါ

what does it mean for us to be black, white, yellow, red?

မည်းဖို့၊ ဖြူဖို့၊ ဝါဖို့၊ နီဖို့က ကျွန်မတို့ အတွက် ဘာအဓိပ္ပါယ်ဆောင်နေလဲ။

Is it the eye, the nose, the mouth, the hair?

မျက်လုံးလား၊ နှာခေါင်းလား၊ ပါးစပ်လား၊ ဆံပင်လားရှင်။

Or does it have to do with our origin,

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ဇာစ်မြစ်၊ နိုင်ငံသား၊

nationality

ဘဏ်စာရင်းနဲ့

or bank account?

ဘာမှ မဆိုင်ဘူးလား။

This personal exercise turned out to be a discovery.

ဒီတစ်ကိုယ်ရေ စွမ်းဆောင်မှုဟာ ရှာဖွေတွေ့ရှိမှု တစ်ခုဖြစ်သွားတယ်။

Suddenly I realized that Humanae was useful for many people.

ရုတ်တရက် Humanæ ဟာ လူအများအတွက် အသုံးဝင်တာကို သဘောပေါက်လိုက်တယ်။

It represents a sort of mirror

ဒါက သူတို့ကိုသူတို့ ဘယ်တံဆိပ်မှာမှ

for those who cannot find themselves reflected in any label.

It was amazing

that people started to share their thoughts about the work with me.

I have hundreds of that,

A mother of 11 years --

၁၁ နှစ်ကလေးရဲ့ မိခင်တစ်ဦး..

A mother of an 11-year-old girl wrote me,

၁၁ နှစ် သမီးလေးရဲ့ မိခင်တစ်ယောက်က ကျွန်မဆီ ရေးတာက

"Very good for me as a tool to work on her confidence,

"သူမရဲ့ ယုံကြည်မှု ဖော်ဆောင်ဖို့ ကိရိယာ တစ်ခုအနေနဲ့ အရမ်းကို ကောင်းပါတယ်။

as this past weekend

ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ သီတင်းပတ်က သူမရဲ့

one of her girlfriends argued with her that she does not belong

မိန်းကလေး သူငယ်ချင်းတစ်ယောက်က သူမဟာ Norway နဲ့မဆိုင်ဘူး၊

and should not be allowed to live in Norway.

နေထိုင်ခွင့် မပြုသင့်ဘူးလို့ သူမနဲ့ ငြင်းခုံခဲ့တာကြောင့်ပါ။

So your work has a very special place in my heart

ဒီတော့ ရှင့်လက်ရာ ကျွန်မနှလုံးသားထဲမှာ အရမ်း အထူးနေရာမှာ ရှိနေပြီး

and it's very important for me."

ကျွန်မအတွက် အရမ်း အရေးကြီးပါတယ်"တဲ့။

A woman shared her portrait on Facebook and wrote,

အမျိုးသမီးတစ်ဦးက သူမရဲ့ ပုံတူကို facebook မှာ မျှဝေပြီး ရေးထားတာက

"All my life,

" ကျွန်မ ဘဝတစ်ခုလုံး

people from across the globe had difficulties to place me in a group,

a stereotype,

Perhaps we should stop.

Instead of framing, ask the individual,

Then I would say,

Besides these unexpected and touching reactions,

one of the most relevant political publications.

And talking about foreign affairs,

I found the perfect ambassadors for my project ...

They are the ones that use Humanae as a tool for educational purposes.

Their passion encourages me to go back to drawing classes,

I feel that I am sitting in front of a therapist.

ကျွန်မဟာ ကုထုံးဆရာရှေ့မှာ ထိုင်နေတယ်လို့ ခံစားရပါတယ်။

All the frustration, fear and loneliness

မချင့်မရဲဖြစ်မှု၊ ကြောက်စိတ်နဲ့ အထီကျန်မှု အားလုံးကို

that I once felt ...

ကျွန်မ ခံစားလိုက်ရတာနဲ့

becomes love.

မေတ္တာစိတ်ပေါက်ဖွားလာတယ်။

The last country --

နောက်ဆုံးနိုင်ငံ

the last country in the world who abolished slavery

ကမ္ဘာမှာ ကျွန်စနစ်ဖျက်သိမ်းခဲ့တဲ့ နိုင်ငံက

is the country where I was born,

ကျွန်မမွေးတဲ့ နိုင်ငံ

Brazil.

Brazil ပါ။

We still have to work hard to abolish discrimination.

ခွဲခြားဆက်ဆံမှုကို ပယ်ဖျက်ဖို့ ပြင်းပြင်းထန်ထန် အားထုတ်ဖို့လိုပါသေးတယ်။

That remains a common practice worldwide,

ဒါဟာ ကမ္ဘာအနှံ့မှာ မြင်နေကျ အစဉ်အလာတစ်ခုအဖြစ် ကျန်နေပြီး

and that will not disappear by itself.
