where the color of our skin not only gives a first impression,

but a lasting one that remains.

I was born in a family full of colors.

私は様々な肌の色を持つ人間が 集まる家庭に生まれました

My father is the son of a maid

私の父はメイドを母に持ち

from whom he inherited an intense dark chocolate tone.

濃いダークチョコレート色の 肌を受け継ぎました

He was adopted by those who I know as my grandparents.

父は 私の祖父母に 養子として引き取られました

The matriarch, my grandma,

has a porcelain skin and cotton-like hair.

陶磁器のような白い肌で 髪は白綿のようです

My grandpa was somewhere between a vanilla and strawberry yogurt tone,

祖父は バニラと ストロベリーのヨーグルトの中間の色で

like my uncle and my cousin.

叔父やいとこもそうです

My mother is a cinnamon-skin daughter of a native Brazilian,

母はシナモン色の肌をしていて ブラジル生まれの

with a pinch of hazel and honey,

and a man [who is] a mix of coffee with milk,

コーヒーの色合いが濃い ミルクコーヒー色の肌の

but with a lot of coffee.

She has two sisters.

One in a toasted-peanut skin

and the other,

also adopted,

more on the beige side,

like a pancake.

Growing up in this family,

このような家族に囲まれて育ったので

color was never important for me.

Outside home, however, things were different soon.

でも 世間ではどうやら 様子が違うことがわかってきました

Color had many other meanings.

肌の色は様々な意味を 持つものだったのです

I remember my first drawing lessons in school

学校で初めての絵画の時間に

as a bunch of contradictory feelings.

多くの複雑な感情を抱いたのを 覚えています

It was exciting and creative

わくわくするような創造的な時間でしたが

but I never understood the unique flesh-colored pencil.

でも「はだいろ」の色鉛筆が １色しかないのを理解できませんでした

I was made of flesh but I wasn't pink.

私にも肌があるけれど その色はピンクではありません

My skin was brown, and people said I was black.

私の肌は茶色で 他の人には「黒人」だと言われました

I was seven years old with a mess of colors in my head.

７歳の私は 肌の色について とても混乱しました

Later,

後になって

when I took my cousin to school,

いとこを学校に連れて行くと

I was usually taken for the nanny.

大抵 私は「子守」と間違われました

By helping in the kitchen at a friend's party,

友人のパーティーで キッチンの手伝いをしていると

「メイド」なのだと思われました

people thought I was the maid.

I was even treated like a prostitute

ヨーロッパ人の友人たちと ビーチを歩いていただけで

just because I was walking alone on the beach with European friends.

And many times,

visiting my grandma or friends in upper class buildings,

上流階級の住む建物に 祖母や友人を訪ねていくと

I was invited not to use the main elevator.

メインのエレベーターを使わないように 言われたこともあります

Because in the end,

with this color and this hair,

この肌の色と この髪の毛では

I cannot belong to some places.

In some way,

ある意味では

I get to used to it and accept part of it.

それに慣れっこになってしまい 受け入れもしました

However, something inside of me keeps revolving and struggling.

しかし どこか心のなかでは 逡巡し もがいていました

Years later I married a Spaniard.

何年も経ってから 私はスペイン人と結婚しました

But not any Spaniard.

単なるスペイン人ではなく

I chose one with the skin color of a lobster when sunburnt.

選んだのは日焼けすると ロブスターのような色になる人でした

(Laughter)

Since then, a new question started to chase me.

それ以来 新たな質問に つきまとわれるようになりました

What will be the color of your children?

あなたたちの子どもは どんな肌の色になるの？

As you can understand, this is my last concern.

お分かりのように 私にはどうでも良いことです

But thinking about it,

でも 考えているうちに

それまでの経験とあいまって

with my previous background,

my story led me to make my personal exercise as a photographer.

写真家として 個人的なプロジェクトを 始めるに至りました

And that is how Humanae was born.

こうして「Humanae （人間たち）」 が生まれました

Humanae is a pursuit to highlight our true colors,

Humanae は 私たち本来の肌の色を 追求するものです

rather than the untrue

人種と結び付けられているような

white, red, black or yellow associated with race.

白、赤、黒、黄色などの 偽りの色ではありません

It's a kind of game to question our codes.

私たちの暗号を疑問に付す ゲームのようなものです

It's a work in progress from a personal story to a global history.

個人の物語から世界の歴史へと 発展しつつある作品です

I portray the subjects in a white background.

私は被写体を 白い背景の前で撮ります

Then I choose an 11-pixel square from the nose,

それから鼻から11ピクセル四方の 四角形を抽出し

paint the background,

背景をその色で塗り

and look for the corresponding color in the industrial palette, Pantone.

パントンの色見本で 一致する色を探します

I started with my family and friends,

家族や友人から始めて

then more and more people joined the adventure,

ソーシャルメディアを通じての 呼びかけのおかげで

thanks to public calls coming through the social media.

さらに多くの人々が この冒険に参加してくれました

I thought that the main space to show my work was the Internet

because I want an open concept that invites everybody

to push the share button in both the computer and their brain.

The snowball started to roll.

The project had a great welcome --

様々な場所で歓迎され ―

invitations, exhibitions,

招待を受けて 展示をしたり

physical formats,

実際に印刷されたものが

ギャラリーや美術館などに 飾られました

galleries and museums ...

just happened.

自然な成り行きでした

And among them, my favorite:

その中でも 私のお気に入りは

when Humanae occupies public spaces

Humanae が公共の空間を占めて

and appears in the street,

街中に姿を表し

it fosters a popular debate

格好の話題となって

and creates a feeling of community.

コミュニティ意識を 生み出すような場合です

I have portrayed more than 3,000 people

私は３千人以上もの人々を

in 13 different countries,

世界の13の国々の

19 different cities around the world.

19の都市で撮影してきました

Just to mention some of them --

その中には ―

from someone included in the Forbes list,

『フォーブス』誌のリストに 名を連ねるような人から

to refugees who crossed the Mediterranean by boat.

地中海を小舟で渡った 難民まで様々です

In Paris, from the UNESCO Headquarters to a shelter.

パリでは ユネスコ本部や 避難所で撮影を行いました

And students both in Switzerland and favelas in Rio de Janeiro.

スイスの学生もいれば リオ・デ・ジャネイロの貧民街の学生もいます

All kinds of beliefs,

様々な信条や

gender identities

様々なジェンダー・アイデンティティ

or physical impairments,

様々な身体障害を持つ人がいます

a newborn or terminally ill.

新生児もいれば 末期患者もいます

We all together build Humanae.

私たち皆で Humanae を 作り上げているのです

Those portraits make us rethink how we see each other.

これらの写真によって 互いをどう見ているのか再考できます

When modern science is questioning the race concept,

現代の科学が人種という概念に 疑問を呈する中で 私たちにとって

黒人、白人、黄色人種、赤色人種であることは どんな意味を持つのでしょう？

what does it mean for us to be black, white, yellow, red?

Is it the eye, the nose, the mouth, the hair?

それは 眼、鼻、口 それとも髪のことでしょうか？

Or does it have to do with our origin,

それとも 出身地や国籍 ―

nationality

銀行口座と

or bank account?

何か関係があるのでしょうか？

This personal exercise turned out to be a discovery.

この個人プロジェクトは 発見へとつながりました

Suddenly I realized that Humanae was useful for many people.

突然 私はHumanae が 多くの人の役に立つと気づいたのです

It represents a sort of mirror

これはどんな分類にも

for those who cannot find themselves reflected in any label.

当てはまらないような人々を 映す鏡となるのです

It was amazing

素晴らしいことに

that people started to share their thoughts about the work with me.

皆が作品についての意見を 私と共有し始めました

I have hundreds of that,

何百もの意見を受け取りましたので

I will share with you, too.

A mother of 11 years --

11歳の子の母親 ―

A mother of an 11-year-old girl wrote me,

11歳の女の子の母親が こう書いてくれました

"Very good for me as a tool to work on her confidence,

「娘に自信をつけさせるために とても役に立っています

as this past weekend

というのも 先週末に

one of her girlfriends argued with her that she does not belong

娘は女友達からこう言われたそうです 『あなたはノルウェー人ではないし

and should not be allowed to live in Norway.

So your work has a very special place in my heart

だからあなたの作品は 私の心の特別な場所にある

and it's very important for me."

とても大切なものなのです」

A woman shared her portrait on Facebook and wrote,

ある女性はFacebookで 自画像をシェアして こう書きました

"All my life,

「これまで生きてきた中で

people from across the globe had difficulties to place me in a group,

世界中の誰も 私を何らかの集団や

ステレオタイプや枠組みには

a stereotype,

a box.

当てはめられませんでした

Perhaps we should stop.

もう やめるべきです

型にはめるのではなく 本人に聞くのです

Instead of framing, ask the individual,

'How would you label yourself?'

『あなたは自分をどう分類するの？』と

Then I would say,

そうすれば 私はこう答えます

'Hi. I'm Massiel.

『こんにちは 私はマシエル

I'm a Dominican-Dutch,

ドミニカ系オランダ人で

I grew up in a mixed family

様々な文化的背景を持つ 家族の中で育った

and I'm a bisexual woman.' "

Besides these unexpected and touching reactions,

Humanae finds a new life in a different variety of fields.

Just to show you some examples,

One of the most important impacts of the project

one of the most relevant political publications.

And talking about foreign affairs,

I found the perfect ambassadors for my project ...

teachers.

They are the ones that use Humanae as a tool for educational purposes.

先生たちがHumanae を 教材に使っているのです

Their passion encourages me to go back to drawing classes,

先生方の情熱によって 私も絵画のクラスに戻ることができました

but this time as a teacher myself.

今度は先生としてです

My students,

私の生徒たちは

both adults and kids,

大人も子供も

paint their self-portraits,

自画像を描き

trying to discover their own unique color.

自分自身の色を 見つけようと努力しています

As a photographer,

写真家として

I realize that I can be a channel for others to communicate.

私は他の人々のコミュニケーションの 道筋となれることに気づきました

As an individual,

個人として

as Angélica,

アンジェリカとしては

every time I take a picture,

写真を撮る度に

I feel that I am sitting in front of a therapist.

セラピストの前に 座っているような気分になります

All the frustration, fear and loneliness

かつて感じていたような あらゆる葛藤や

that I once felt ...

恐れや孤独は ―

becomes love.

愛へと変わるのです

The last country --

最後の国 ―

the last country in the world who abolished slavery

奴隷制度を世界で 最後に廃止したのは

is the country where I was born,

私が生まれた国

Brazil.

ブラジルです

We still have to work hard to abolish discrimination.

差別を撤廃するには まだまだ努力が必要です

That remains a common practice worldwide,

世界の他の場所でも これは同じことであり

and that will not disappear by itself.

差別は自然になくなるものではありません
