for good reasons.

And it's this importance

why I decided to look into the issues

that this technology has,

ဆုံးဖြတ်ရတာပါ။

because it's so fundamental to our lives.

ဒီကိစ္စဟာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ နေ့စဉ်ဘဝမှာ အခြေခံကျလွန်းလို့ပါပဲ။

And one of the issues is capacity.

ပထမဆုံး ပြဿနာကတော့ အချက်အလက်တွေ သယ်နိုင်တဲ့ ပမာဏပါ။

The way we transmit wireless data is by using electromagnetic waves --

ကြိုးမဲ့နည်းပညာနဲ့ သတင်းအချက်အလက် ပို့တဲ့နေရာမှာ လျှပ်စစ်သံလ်ိုက်လှိုင်းတွေကို သုံးပါတယ်

in particular, radio waves.

အထူးသဖြင့်တော့ ရေဒီယိုလှိုင်းတွေပါ။

And radio waves are limited.

ဒီ ရေဒီယိုလှိုင်းတွေမှာ ကန့်သတ်ချက်တွေရှိပါတယ်။

They are scarce; they are expensive;

သူတို့ဟာ ရှားပါးပြီး ကုန်ကျစရိတ်ကြီးမားပါတယ်။

and we only have a certain range of it.

And it's this limitation

that doesn't cope

with the demand of wireless data transmissions

and the number of bytes and data which are transmitted every month.

နိုင်နိုင်နင်းနင်း ကိုင်တွယ် မဖြေရှင်းနိုင်ပါဘူး။

And we are simply running out of spectrum.

သုံးစွဲနိုင်တဲ့ လှိုင်းပမာဏ တဖြည်းဖြည်းနဲ့ကုန်လာပါပြီ။

There's another problem.

နောက်ထပ် ပြဿနာ တစ်ခုလဲ ရှိပါသေးတယ်။

That is efficiency.

အဲဒါကတော့ ထိရောက်ကောင်းမွန်မှုပါ။

These 1.4 million cellular radio masts, or base stations,

ဒီ ၁.၄ သန်း ရှိတဲ့ ရေဒီယို စခန်းတွေဟာ

consume a lot of energy.

လျှပ်စစ် ပမာဏ အမြောက်အများကိုလည်း သုံးစွဲပါတယ်။

And mind you, most of the energy

ခင်ဗျားတို့ သိဖို့က ဒီလျှပ်စစ်စွမ်းအားအများစုကို

is not used to transmit the radio waves,

ရေဒီယိုလှိုင်းတွေ ထုတ်လွှင့်ဖို့သုံးတာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး

it is used to cool the base stations.

ဒီအခြေစိုက်စခန်း နဲ့ဆက်စပ် ပစ္စည်းတွေကို အအေးခံဖို့ သုံးရတာပါ။

Then the efficiency of such a base station

is only at about five percent.

And that creates a big problem.

Then there's another issue that you're all aware of.

You have to switch off your mobile phone

In hospitals, they are security issues.

And security is another issue.

These radio waves penetrate through walls.

They can be intercepted,

and somebody can make use of your network

if he has bad intentions.

So these are the main four issues.

But on the other hand,

we have 14 billion of these:

light bulbs, light.

And light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

အလင်းကလည်း လျှပ်စစ်သံလိုက် ရောင်စဉ်ရဲ့ အစိတ်အပိုင်း ပါ။

So let's look at this in the context

ဒါကို လျှပ်စစ်သံလိုက် ရောင်စဉ် တစ်ခုလုံးနဲ့ အခြေခံထားပြီး ကြည့်ရမယ်ဆိုရင်

of the entire electromagnetic spectrum, where we have gamma rays.

Gamma ရောင်ခြည်တွေ ရှိမယ်။

You don't want to get close to gamma rays, it could be dangerous.

X-rays, useful when you go to hospitals.

Then there's ultraviolet light.

it's good for a nice suntan,

but otherwise dangerous for the human body.

Infrared --

ဒါပြီး အနီအောက်ရောင်ခြည်လာမယ်။

due to eye safety regulations,

မျက်စိ အန္တရာယ်မဖြစ်ရေး စည်းကမ်းသတ်မှတ်ချက်တွေကြောင့်

can be only used with low power.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ စွမ်းအားနိမ့်ဟာပဲ သုံးလို့ရတယ်။

And then we have the radio waves, they have the issues I've just mentioned.

And in the middle there, we have this visible light spectrum.

It's light,

အဲဒါကတော့ အလင်း ပါပဲ။

and light has been around for many millions of years.

And in fact, it has created us,

အမှန်တော့ အလင်းက ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို ဖန်တီးတယ်။

has created life,

has created all the stuff of life.

So it's inherently safe to use.

And wouldn't it be great to use that for wireless communications?

Not only that, I compared [it to] the entire spectrum.

ဒါတင်မကပါဘူး အလင်းကို ကျွန်တော် ရောင်စဉ်အုပ်စုကြီး တစ်ခုလုံးနဲ့ နှိုင်းယှဉ်တယ်။

I compared the radio waves spectrum --

the size of it --

သူရဲ့ လှိုင်းပမာဏနဲ့

with the size of the visible light spectrum.

မြင်နိုင်တဲ့ အလင်းရဲ့ လှိုင်းပမာဏ

And guess what?

ဘယ်လို ဖြစ်မယ်ထင်လဲ။

We have 10,000 times more of that spectrum,

အလင်းမှာ ရေဒီယိုလှိုင်းထက် ရောင်စဉ်ပေါင်း အဆ ၁ သောင်းကျော် ပိုများပါတယ်။

which is there for us to use.

အဲဒါကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ အသုံးချလို့ရပါတယ်။

So not only do we have this huge amount of spectrum,

ဒါ့အပြင် ကျွန်တော်တို့မှာ ဒီများပြားလှတဲ့ ရောင်စဉ် ပမာဏတွေ ရှိရုံတင် မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

let's compare that with a number I've just mentioned.

We have 1.4 million

expensively deployed,

inefficient radio cellular base stations.

And multiply that by 10,000,

then you end up at 14 billion.

14 billion is the number of light bulbs installed already.

So we have the infrastructure there.

Look at the ceiling, you see all these light bulbs.

မျက်နှာကြက်ကို ကြည့်လိုက်ရင် ဒီလျှပ်စစ်မီးလုံးတွေကို တွေ့ရမှာပါ။

Go to the main floor, you see these light bulbs.

ခန်းမဆောင် သွားရင်လည်း ဒီမီးလုံးတွေကို တွေ့မှာပါ။

Can we use them for communications?

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဒါတွေကို ဆက်သွယ်ရေးမှာ သုံးလို့ရမလား။

Yes.

သုံးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

What do we need to do?

ဒါဆို ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘာလုပ်ဖို့လ်ိုမလဲ။

The one thing we need to do

ကျွန်တော်တို့လုပ်ဖို့ လိုအပ်တာ တစ်ခုကတော့

is we have to replace these inefficient incandescent light bulbs,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဒီ စွမ်းရည်မလုံလောက်တဲ့ အလင်းဖြာနေတဲ့ မီးလုံးတွေနဲ့

florescent lights,

ဖလော်ရတ်ဆန့်မီးတွေကို

with this new technology of LED,

LED light bulbs.

LED မီးလုံးတွေနဲ့ အစားထိုးလိုက်ဖို့ပါပဲ။

An LED is a semiconductor. It's an electronic device.

LED က တပိုင်းလျှပ်ကူးပစ္စည်းပါ။ လျှပ်စစ်ပစ္စည်းတစ်ခုပါ။

And it has a very nice acute property.

သူ့မှာ တိကျတဲ့ စွဲမက်ဖွယ် ဂုဏ်သတ္တိရှိပါတယ်။

Its intensity can be modulated

at very high speeds,

and it can be switched off at very high speeds.

And this is a fundamental basic property

You all know remote controls have an infrared LED --

basically you switch on the LED, and if it's off, you switch it off.

And it creates a simple, low-speed data stream

What we have done

replace the remote control of our light bulb.

We transmit with our technology,

not only a single data stream,

we transmit thousands of data streams

But not only that.

What we've done

is we have also developed a demonstrator.

There's a receiver.

The receiver will convert these little, subtle changes in the amplitude

In the future we hope

So what happens

ကျွန်တော် အဲဒီအလင်းကို ဖွင့်လိုက်ရင် ဘာဖြစ်လာမလဲ။

As you would expect,

ခင်ဗျားတို့ မျှော်မှန်းထားသလို

it's a light, a desk lamp.

ဒါက အလင်းပါ။ စာကြည့်မီးလုံးပါ။

Put your book beneath it and you can read.

စာအုပ်ကို ဒီအောက်မှာထားပြီး ခင်ဗျား စာဖတ်လို့ရတယ်။

It's illuminating the space.

But at the same time, you see this video coming up here.

It's serving the purpose of illumination,

but at the same time, we are able to transmit this data.

And you see,

You also have a critical question now, and

But, you can dim down the light

And you are still able to transmit data -- that's possible.

So I've mentioned to you the four challenges.

Look around. Everywhere. Look at your smart phone.

It has a flashlight, an LED flashlight.

These are potential sources for high-speed data transmission.

And then there's security.

You would agree with me

that light doesn't penetrate through walls.

And there's only data where there is light.

So if I don't want that receiver to receive the data,

then what I could do,

turn it away.

So the data goes in that direction, not there anymore.

Now we can in fact see where the data is going to.

So for me,

Intrinsically safe environments

but you can use light -- you see plenty of light there.

In hospitals,

Cars have LED-based headlights, LED-based back lights,

and cars can communicate with each other

in the way that they exchange information.

Traffic lights can communicate to the car and so on.

And then you have these millions of street lamps

deployed around the world.

And every street lamp could be a free access point.

We call it, in fact, a Li-Fi,

could be a potential transmitter of wireless data.

So you could enjoy your most favorite TED video

Online life. So that is a vision, I think, that is possible.
