Every summer, my family and I travel across the world,

နွေရာသီတိုင်း မိသားစုနဲ့ ကျွန်မဟာ ကမ္ဘာတစ်လွှာ ခရီးထွက်ပါတယ်။

to the culturally diverse country of India.

ယဉ်ကျေးမှုပိုင်းအရ စုံလင်လှတဲ့ အိန္ဒိယနိုင်ငံကိုပါ။

Now, India is a country infamous for its scorching heat and humidity.

အိန္ဒိယဟာ ခြစ်ခြစ်တောက်အပူနဲ့ စိုထိုင်း မှုအတွက် သတင်းဆိုးထွက်တဲ့ နိုင်ငံပါ။

For me, the only relief from this heat is to drink plenty of water.

ကျွန်မအတွက်တော့ အပူကနေ သက်သာဖို့ နည်းက ရေအများကြီး သောက်ဖို့ပါပဲ။

Now, while in India,

အိန္ဒိယမှာရှိတုန်း မိဘတွေက

my parents always remind me to only drink boiled or bottled water,

ကျိုထားတဲ့ရေ (သို့) ရေသန့်ဗူးကိုပဲ သောက်ဖို့ ကျွန်မကို အမြဲသတိပေးပါတယ်။

because unlike here in America,

အကြောင်းက ရေပိုက်ဖွင့်ပြီး သောက်နိုင်တဲ့

where I can just turn on a tap and easily get clean, potable water,

သန့်ရှင်းတဲ့ ရေကို အလွယ်တကူရတဲ့ ဒီအမေရိကနဲ့မတူပဲ

in India, the water is often contaminated.

အိန္ဒိယမှာက ရေက မကြာခဏတော့ မသန့်ဘူးလေ။

So my parents have to make sure

ဒီတော့ မိဘတွေဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ ဘေးကင်းကင်း

that the water we drink is safe.

သောက်လို့ရတဲ့ ရေရဖို့ သေချာအောင်လုပ်ရတယ်။

However, I soon realized

ဒါပေမဲ့ မကြာခင်မှာပဲ လူတိုင်းဟာ

that not everyone is fortunate enough

ကျွန်မတို့လို သန့်ရှင်းတဲ့ ရေရဖို့

to enjoy the clean water we did.

ကံမကောင်းဘူးဆိုတာ သဘောပေါက်လိုက်တယ်။

Outside my grandparents' house in the busy streets of India,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အဖိုးအဖွားတို့ အိမ်အပြင်ဘက် အိန္ဒိယရဲ့ လူရှုပ်တဲ့လမ်းတွေထဲမှာ

I saw people standing in long lines

လူတွေဟာ နေပူပူထဲမှာ တန်းအရှည်ကြီး ရပ်စောင့်နေပြီး

under the hot sun

ရေပုံးတွေကို ဘုံပိုင်ရေနဲ့

filling buckets with water from a tap.

ဖြည့်နေတာ မြင်လိုက်တယ်။

I even saw children,

ကျွန်မအသက်တူရွယ်တူ ကလေးတွေတောင်

who looked the same age as me,

လမ်းဘေး စမ်းချောင်းတွေထဲက

filling up these clear plastic bottles

ဒီပလပ်စတစ်အကြည် ပုလင်းတွေကို

with dirty water from streams on the roadside.

ညစ်ပတ်တဲ့ရေနဲ့ ဖြည့်နေတာ တွေ့လိုက်တယ်။

Watching these kids

ထိဖို့တောင် ညစ်ပတ်လွန်းတယ်လို့

forced to drink water

ခံစားမိတဲ့ ရေကို ဒီကလေးတွကို

that I felt was too dirty to touch

အတင်းသောက်ခိုင်းတာကို ကြည့်ရင်း

changed my perspective on the world.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ လောကအမြင် ပြောင်းလဲခဲ့ပါတယ်။

This unacceptable social injustice

ဒီလက်ခံနိုင်စရာမရှိတဲ့ လူမှုရေး မမျှတမှုက

compelled me to want to find a solution

ကမ္ဘာ့ သန့်ရှင်းတဲ့ ရေပြဿနာအတွက် အဖြေတစ်ခုရှာစေဖို့

to our world's clean water problem.

ကျွန်မကို ဖမ်းစားလိုက်တယ်။

I wanted to know why these kids lacked water,

ဘဝအတွက် မရှိမဖြစ် အရာတစ်ခုဖြစ်တဲ့ ရေကို

a substance that is essential for life.

ဒီကလေးတွေ ကင်းမဲနေတာ ဘာကြောင့်ဆိုတာ သိချင်ခဲ့တယ်။

And I learned that we are facing

a global water crisis.

Now, this may seem surprising,

ဒါက အံသြစရာဖြစ်ပုံရတာက

as 75 percent of our planet is covered in water,

ကျွန်မတို့ ဂြိုဟ်ဟာ ၇၅% ရေဖုံးထားပေမဲ့

but only 2.5 percent of that is freshwater,

and less than one percent of Earth's freshwater supply

With rising populations,

industrial development and economic growth,

စက်မှုဖွံ့ဖြိုးမှုနဲ့ စီးပွားရေး တိုးပွားမှုနဲ့အတူ

our demand for clean water is increasing,

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ရေလိုအပ်ချက်က တိုးလာနေပေမဲ့

yet our freshwater resources are rapidly depleting.

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ ရေချိုအရင်းအမြစ်တွေကတော့ အလျင်အမြန်ပဲ ယိုယွင်းနေပါတယ်။

According to the World Health Organization,

ကမ္ဘာ့ ကျန်းမာရေး အဖွဲ့အစည်း အဆိုအရ

660 million people in our world

ကမ္ဘာပေါ်က လူ သန်း ၆၀၀ ဟာ သန့်ရှင်းတဲ့ ရေအရင်းအမြစ်ရဖို့

lack access to a clean water source.

အလားအလာ မရှိကြပါ။

Lack of access to clean water is a leading cause of death

သန့်ရှင်းတဲ့ ရေ ရပိုင်ခွင့် ကင်းမဲ့တာဟာ ဖွံ့ဖြိုးဆဲနိုင်ငံတွေမှာ

in children under the age of five in developing countries,

အသက်ငါးနှစ်အောက် ကလေးတွေကို သေစေတဲ့ အကြောင်းဖြစ်စေပြီး

and UNICEF estimates that 3,000 children

UNICEF ရဲ့ ခန့်မှန်းချက်အရ ကလေးပေါင်း ၃၀၀၀ ဟာ

die every day from a water-related disease.

ရေနဲ့ ဆက်စပ်တဲ့ ရောဂါကြောင့် နေ့စဉ် သေဆုံးနေပါတယ်။

So after returning home one summer in eighth grade,

ဒါနဲ့ အိမ်ပြန်ပြီးနောက် ရှစ်တန်းတုန်းက နွေတစ်ရာသီမှာ

I decided that I wanted to combine my passion

ကမ္ဘာ့ရေ အကြပ်အတည်းကို ဖြေရှင်းဖို့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ထက်သန်မှုကို

for solving the global water crisis

ကျွန်မရဲ့ သိပ္ပံပညာ စိတ်ဝင်စားမှုနဲ့

with my interest in science.

So I decided that the best thing to do

would be to convert my garage into a laboratory.

Actually, at first I converted my kitchen into a laboratory,

but my parents didn't really approve and kicked me out.

I also read a lot of journal papers on water-related research,

ရေနဲ့ စပ်ဆိုင်တဲ့ ဂျာနယ်စာတမ်းတွေ အများကြီးကိုလည်း ဖတ်ခဲ့ပြီး

and I learned that currently in developing countries,

သိခဲ့ရတာက လောလောဆယ် ဖွံ့ဖြိုးဆဲနိုင်ငံတွေမှာ

something called solar disinfection,

နေရောင်ခြည်သုံး ပိုးသတ်ခြင်း (သို့ ) SODIS ခေါ်တဲ့

or SODIS, is used to purify water.

တစ်ခုခုကို ရေသန့်စင်ဖို့ သုံးတာကိုပါ။

In SODIS, clear plastic bottles are filled with contaminated water

SODIS မှာ ပလပ်စတစ် ပုလင်းအကြည်တွေမှာ ညစ်ပတ်တဲ့ ရေကိုဖြည့်ပြီး

and then exposed to sunlight for six to eight hours.

The UV radiation from the sun

နေရောင်ခြည်ထဲက UV ရောင်ခြည်က

destroys the DNA of these harmful pathogens

and decontaminates the water.

ရေကို သန့်စင်ပေးပါတယ်။

Now, while SODIS is really easy to use and energy-efficient,

SODIS က အင်မတန် လွယ်ကူပြီး စွမ်းအင် တွက်ခြေကိုက်ပေမဲ့

as it only uses solar energy,

it's really slow,

as it can take up to two days when it's cloudy.

So in order to make the SODIS process faster,

this new method called photocatalysis

photocatalysis လို့ခေါ်တဲ့ စနစ်ကို

has recently been used.

မကြာခင်က သုံးကြတယ်။

So what exactly is this photocatalysis?

ဒီတော့ photo catalysis ဆိုတာ အတိအကျက ဘာလဲ။

Let's break it down:

ဒါကို ပိုင်းကြည့်ရအောင်၊

"photo" means from the sun,

"photo" ဆိုတာ နေကလို့ ဖြစ်ပြီး

and a catalyst is something that speeds up a reaction.

catalyst က ဓါတ်ပြုမှု မြန်စေတဲ့အရာပါ။

So what photocatalysis is doing

ဒီတော့ photocatalysis လုပ်ပေးတာက

is it's just speeding up this solar disinfection process.

နေရေင်ခြည်သုံး သန့်စင်ခြင်းကို မြန်အောင်လုပ်ပေးခြင်းပါ။

When sunlight comes in and strikes a photocatalyst,

နေရောင် ဝင်လာပြီး TiO2 (သို့) titanium dioxide လို photocatalysis

like TiO2, or titanium dioxide,

တစ်ခုကို ထိတဲ့အခါ

it creates these really reactive oxygen species,

ဒါက တကယ့်ကို ဓာတ်ပြုတဲ့ superoxides, hydrogen peroxide နဲ့

like superoxides, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals.

These reactive oxygen species

ဒီဓာတ်ပြုတဲ့ အောက်စီဂျင် အမျိုးအစားတွေက

are able to remove bacteria and organics

ဘက်တီးရီးယာနဲ့ အော်ဂင်းနစ်တွေနဲ့

and a whole lot of contaminants from drinking water.

သောက်ရေက ညစ်ညမ်းမှုတစ်စုလုံးကို ဖယ်ရှားနိုင်စွမ်းရှိပါတယ်။

But unfortunately, there are several disadvantages

to the way photocatalytic SODIS is currently deployed.

See, what they do is they take the clear plastic bottles

and they coat the inside with this photocatalytic coating.

But photocatalysts like titanium dioxide

ဒါပေမဲ့ titanium dioxide လို photocatalysis တွေဟာ

are actually commonly used in sunscreens

တကယ်တော့ UV ရောင်ခြည်ကို ကာကွယ်ဖို့ အများအားဖြင့်

to block UV radiation.

နေပူခံလိမ်းဆေးတွေမှာ သုံးပါတယ်၊

So when they're coated on the inside of these bottles,

ဒီတော့ ပုလင်းတွေရဲ့ အတွင်ဘက်မှာ သုတ်တဲ့အခါ

they're actually blocking some of the UV radiation

and diminishing the efficiency of the process.

Also, these photocatalytic coatings

are not tightly bound to the plastic bottle,

which means they wash off, and people end up drinking the catalyst.

While TiO2 is safe and inert,

it's really inefficient if you keep drinking the catalyst,

because then you have to continue to replenish it,

even after a few uses.

So my goal was to overcome the disadvantages

of these current treatment methods

and create a safe, sustainable,

cost-effective and eco-friendly method of purifying water.

ဂေဟနစ်နဲ့ သဟဇာတဖြစ်တဲ့ ရေသန့်စင်တဲ့ နည်းကို ဖန်တီးဖို့ပါ။

What started off as an eighth grade science fair project

ရှစ်တန်းအနေနဲ့ စခဲ့တဲ့ သိပ္ပံပြပွဲ ပရောဂျက်ဟာ

is now my photocatalytic composite for water purification.

အခုတော့ ရေသန့်စင်ရေးအတွက် ကျွန်မရဲ့ photocatalytic ပေါင်းစပ်မှုပါ။

The composite combines titanium dioxide with cement.

ဒီပေါင်းစပ်မှုက titanium dioxide ကို ဘိလပ်မြေနဲ့ ပေါင်းစပ်တယ်။

The cement-like composite can be formed into several different shapes,

ဘိလပ်မြေလို ပေါင်းစပ်မှုတွေ အချို့ကို ပုံစံအမျိုးမျိုးနဲ့ တွေ့နိုင်ရာ

which results in an extremely versatile range of deployment methods.

For example, you could create a rod

or you could create a porous filter that can filter water for families.

You can even coat the inside of an existing water tank

to purify larger amounts of water

for communities over a longer period of time.

Now, over the course of this,

my journey hasn't really been easy.

You know, I didn't have access to a sophisticated laboratory.

I was 14 years old when I started,

in my interest in pursuing scientific research

and wanting to solve the global water crisis.

See, water isn't just the universal solvent.

Water is a universal human right.

ရေဟာ လူသားရဲ့ အထွေထွေ ရပိုင်ခွင့်ကြီးပါ။

And for that reason,

ဒီအကြောင်းကြောင့်

I'm continuing to work on this science fair project from 2012

ဒါကို လက်တွေ့ခန်းကနေ လက်တွေ့ကမ္ဘာထဲကို ယူဆောင်ဖို့

to bring it from the laboratory into the real world.

၂၀၁၂ ကစပြီး ဒီသိပ္ပံပြပွဲ ပရောဂျက်ကို ဆက်လုပ်ဆောင်နေတာပါ။

And this summer, I founded Catalyst for World Water,

ဒီနှစ်နွေရာသီမှာ World Water အတွက် Catalyst ကို ကျွန်မ ထူထောင်ခဲ့တယ်။

a social enterprise aimed at catalyzing solutions to the global water crisis.

ကမ္ဘာ့ ရေအကြပ်အတည်းအတွက် ဖြေရှင်းနည်းတွေ ဓာတ်ကူဖို့ ရည်ရွယ်တဲ့ လူမှုရေးလုပ်ငန်းပါ။

Alone, a single drop of water can't do much,

but when many drops come together,

they can sustain life on our planet.

Just as water drops come together to form oceans,

သမုဒ္ဒရာတွေဖြစ်ဖို့ ရေစက်တွေ စုပေါင်းလာသလိုပဲ

I believe that we all must come together

ဒီကမ္ဘာ့ ပြဿနာကို ဖြေရှင်းတဲ့အခါ ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံး

when tackling this global problem.
