Every summer, my family and I travel across the world,

Now, India is a country infamous for its scorching heat and humidity.

For me, the only relief from this heat is to drink plenty of water.

이 더위에서 탈출하는 유일한 방법은 물을 많이 마시는 것 뿐입니다.

Now, while in India,

my parents always remind me to only drink boiled or bottled water,

제 부모님은 늘 저에게 끓인 물이나 생수를 마시라고 합니다.

because unlike here in America,

where I can just turn on a tap and easily get clean, potable water,

in India, the water is often contaminated.

인도는 대부분의 물이 오염되어 있습니다.

So my parents have to make sure

그래서 저희 부모님은 마시는 물이

that the water we drink is safe.

항상 안전한지 확인하죠.

However, I soon realized

하지만 전 모든 사람이

that not everyone is fortunate enough

우리처럼 깨끗한 물을 마시지는 못한다는 것을 알았습니다.

to enjoy the clean water we did.

Outside my grandparents' house in the busy streets of India,

저의 할아버지집 밖의 번잡한 길에서

I saw people standing in long lines

긴줄을 서 있는 사람들을 봤습니다.

under the hot sun

뜨거운 햇볕아래

filling buckets with water from a tap.

수도꼭지에서 물통의 물을 채우면서 말이죠.

I even saw children,

심지어 아이들도 있었습니다.

who looked the same age as me,

제 나이와 비슷한 나이로 보였지만

filling up these clear plastic bottles

투명 플라스틱 통을

with dirty water from streams on the roadside.

길가옆 개울의 더러운 물로 채우고 있었습니다.

Watching these kids

만지기에도 더러워 보이는 물을 마실 수밖에 없는

forced to drink water

that I felt was too dirty to touch

이 아이들을 목격한 것은

changed my perspective on the world.

저의 세상에 대한 관점을 바꿔놨습니다.

This unacceptable social injustice

이런 사회적 부당함은

compelled me to want to find a solution

저로 하여금 세계의 물문제에

to our world's clean water problem.

해결책을 찾도록 만들었습니다.

I wanted to know why these kids lacked water,

저는 이 아이가 도대체 왜 물이 부족한지 궁금했습니다.

a substance that is essential for life.

물은 생명에 필수적인 것이죠.

And I learned that we are facing

그리고 우리가 세계적인 물문제에 봉착했다는 걸 깨달았습니다.

a global water crisis.

Now, this may seem surprising,

놀라운 것은

as 75 percent of our planet is covered in water,

지구의 75%가 물로 되어 있지만

but only 2.5 percent of that is freshwater,

오직 2.5%만이 담수이고

and less than one percent of Earth's freshwater supply

이 담수중 1%이하 만이

is available for human consumption.

우리가 마실 수 있는 식수라는 겁니다.

With rising populations,

인구증가나 산업화와 경제성장과 함께

industrial development and economic growth,

our demand for clean water is increasing,

깨끗한 물에 대한 수요는 계속 증가해왔습니다.

yet our freshwater resources are rapidly depleting.

하지만 담수원은 빠르게 고갈되고 있습니다.

According to the World Health Organization,

세계보건기구(WHO)에 따르면

660 million people in our world

전세계에서 6억 6천만 명이

lack access to a clean water source.

깨끗한 물을 마실 수 없다고 합니다.

Lack of access to clean water is a leading cause of death

깨끗한 물을 마실 수 없다는 것은

in children under the age of five in developing countries,

개발도상국가의 5세 이하 어린이들의 주요 사망원인입니다.

and UNICEF estimates that 3,000 children

또한 유니세프는 매일 3,000명의 어린이들이

die every day from a water-related disease.

So after returning home one summer in eighth grade,

I decided that I wanted to combine my passion

for solving the global water crisis

with my interest in science.

So I decided that the best thing to do

would be to convert my garage into a laboratory.

저희집 창고를 연구실로 바꾸자고 말이죠.

Actually, at first I converted my kitchen into a laboratory,

사실, 처음엔 주방을 연구실로 썼어요.

but my parents didn't really approve and kicked me out.

하지만 부모님이 허락을 하지 않았고 부엌에서 쫓겨난거죠.

I also read a lot of journal papers on water-related research,

저는 물과 관련된 많은 책을 읽었습니다.

and I learned that currently in developing countries,

그리고 많은 개발도상국에서 현재

something called solar disinfection,

태양광살균(Solar disinfection) 또는 SODIS라고 하는 것이

or SODIS, is used to purify water.

물정화에 쓰인다는 걸 알았습니다.

In SODIS, clear plastic bottles are filled with contaminated water

SODIS에서는 깨끗한 플라스틱 병에 오염된 물을 채워서

and then exposed to sunlight for six to eight hours.

6,8시간 태양에 노출을 시킵니다.

The UV radiation from the sun

태양의 자외선이 해로운 병원체의 DNA를 파괴해서

destroys the DNA of these harmful pathogens

and decontaminates the water.

물을 정화시키는 겁니다.

Now, while SODIS is really easy to use and energy-efficient,

SODIS는 태양만을 이용하므로 매우 쉽고 에너지 효율이 좋지만

as it only uses solar energy,

it's really slow,

매우 느립니다.

as it can take up to two days when it's cloudy.

날이 흐릴 때는 이틀까지 걸릴 수도 있습니다.

So in order to make the SODIS process faster,

따라서 SODIS 과정을 빠르게 하기 위해

this new method called photocatalysis

광촉매제라는 방법이 최근 사용되었습니다.

has recently been used.

So what exactly is this photocatalysis?

그럼 광촉매라는게 뭘까요?

Let's break it down:

"photo" means from the sun,

"광"이란 태양이 원천이란 뜻이죠.

and a catalyst is something that speeds up a reaction.

촉매라는 것은 무언가를 촉진시킨다는 겁니다.

So what photocatalysis is doing

따라서 광촉매라는 것은

is it's just speeding up this solar disinfection process.

태양광살균의 속도를 높이는 겁니다.

When sunlight comes in and strikes a photocatalyst,

태양광이 들어와 이산화티타늄(TiO2)같은

like TiO2, or titanium dioxide,

광촉매제를 충돌시키면

it creates these really reactive oxygen species,

반응하여 활성산소가 생성되는데

like superoxides, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals.

초산화물, 과산화수소와 하이드록실기 같은 것들입니다.

These reactive oxygen species

이 활성산소는

are able to remove bacteria and organics

물에서 박테리아와 유기물

and a whole lot of contaminants from drinking water.

그리고 많은 오염물질을 제거할 수 있습니다.

But unfortunately, there are several disadvantages

하지만, 안타깝게도 광촉매 소독이 쓰이는 방식에 있어

to the way photocatalytic SODIS is currently deployed.

현재 이 광촉매는 몇가지 약점이 있습니다.

See, what they do is they take the clear plastic bottles

여기 광촉매는 깨끗한 페트병을 가져와서

and they coat the inside with this photocatalytic coating.

그 안쪽에 광촉매를 바릅니다.

But photocatalysts like titanium dioxide

하지만 이산화티타늄같은 광촉매제는

are actually commonly used in sunscreens

주로 자외선 차단을 위한 선크림에 주로 사용됩니다.

to block UV radiation.

So when they're coated on the inside of these bottles,

따라서 이 물질을 내부에 바르게 되면

they're actually blocking some of the UV radiation

일정량의 자외선을 차단하게 되고

and diminishing the efficiency of the process.

태양광 소독의 효과를 떨어뜨리게 되는 겁니다.

Also, these photocatalytic coatings

are not tightly bound to the plastic bottle,

플리스틱 병에 단단히 붙어 있지 않습니다.

which means they wash off, and people end up drinking the catalyst.

이 말은 코팅이 씻겨나가고 사람들이 이 촉매제를 마시게 된다는 뜻입니다.

While TiO2 is safe and inert,

TiO2(이산화티타늄)은 안전하지만

it's really inefficient if you keep drinking the catalyst,

사람들이 이 촉매제를 마시게 된다면 매우 비효율적이겠죠.

because then you have to continue to replenish it,

왜냐하면 몇번만 사용해도 계속 촉매제를 채워줘야 하니까요.

even after a few uses.

So my goal was to overcome the disadvantages

저의 목표는 현재 사용되는 방식의 약점을 보완해서

of these current treatment methods

and create a safe, sustainable,

안전하고, 지속적이며, 비용대비 효과가 좋으며

cost-effective and eco-friendly method of purifying water.

환경친화적인 물정화 방식을 개발하는 것이었습니다.

What started off as an eighth grade science fair project

중학교 2학년의 과학실험으로 시작한 것이

is now my photocatalytic composite for water purification.

지금은 물정화를 위한 광촉매 화합물이 되었습니다.

The composite combines titanium dioxide with cement.

이 화합물은 이산화티타늄과 시멘트를 섞은 것입니다.

The cement-like composite can be formed into several different shapes,

시멘트 같은 물질은 다양한 형태로 변형될 수 있습니다.

which results in an extremely versatile range of deployment methods.

이말은 굉장히 다양하게 사용될 수 있다는 말이기도 합니다.

For example, you could create a rod

예를 들어, 여러분은 막대기를 만들어서

that can easily be placed inside water bottles for individual use

손쉽게 물병 안에 두거나

or you could create a porous filter that can filter water for families.

가족들을 위해 다공필터를 만들어 물을 통과시킬 수도 있습니다.

You can even coat the inside of an existing water tank

그리고 기존에 있는 물탱크 안쪽에 발라

대용량의 물을 마을을 위해 정화하는 것도 가능합니다.

to purify larger amounts of water

for communities over a longer period of time.

Now, over the course of this,

그 과정에서 저의 여정은 결코 쉽지 않았습니다.

my journey hasn't really been easy.

You know, I didn't have access to a sophisticated laboratory.

첨단 연구실을 가지지도 않았고

I was 14 years old when I started,

이 일을 시작했을 때는 14살에 불과했습니다.

but I didn't let my age deter me

하지만 과학연구와

in my interest in pursuing scientific research

세계의 물위기를 해결하겠다는

and wanting to solve the global water crisis.

저의 열정에 나이는 문제가 되지 않았습니다.

See, water isn't just the universal solvent.

물은 단순한 보편용매가 아닙니다.

Water is a universal human right.

물은 보편 인권입니다.

And for that reason,

I'm continuing to work on this science fair project from 2012

저는 2012년 부터 과학연구를 계속해오고 있습니다.

to bring it from the laboratory into the real world.

이 문제를 연구실에서 현실로 가져오기 위해서 말이죠.

And this summer, I founded Catalyst for World Water,

그리고 저는 "세계물을 위한 촉매" 재단을 올여름 설립했습니다.

a social enterprise aimed at catalyzing solutions to the global water crisis.

이 재단은 세계 물위기 극복을 위한 사회단체입니다.

Alone, a single drop of water can't do much,

물 한방울은 미약하지만

but when many drops come together,

많은 물방울이 모여

they can sustain life on our planet.

우리 지구의 수많은 생명을 유지시킵니다.

Just as water drops come together to form oceans,

물방울이 모여 대양을 만드는 것처럼

I believe that we all must come together

이 세계적인 문제를 극복하기 위해선

when tackling this global problem.

우리 모두가 함께 나서야 한다고 믿습니다.
