Where do you come from?

သင်ဘယ်က လာတာလဲ။

It's such a simple question,

ဒါက တော်တော် ရိုးတဲ့ မေးခွန်းပါ။

but these days, of course, simple questions

bring ever more complicated answers.

People are always asking me where I come from,

and they're expecting me to say India,

and they're absolutely right insofar as 100 percent

and I have been for 48 years now,

since I was a really small child.

Except, for many of those years,

then I'm Japanese,

because I've been living as much as I can

for the last 25 years in Japan.

And their whole life will be spent taking pieces

I think about my sweetheart or my closest friends

And I'd always felt this way,

but it really came home to me, as it were,

some years ago when I was climbing up the stairs

in my parents' house in California,

and I looked through the living room windows

Of course, if anybody asked me then,

I literally couldn't point to any physical construction.

My home would have to be whatever I carried around inside me.

And in so many ways, I think this is a terrific liberation.

I think the age of movement brings exhilarating new possibilities.

Certainly when I'm traveling,

And potentially, everything about the way

တိုးတိုးလာတဲ့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ အတိတ်ကာလထက်

or the present tense as much as in the past.

အနာဂတ် (သို့) ပစ္စုပ္ပန်ကာလမှာ အမြစ်တွယ်နေပါတယ်။

And home, we know, is not just the place

ကျွန်တော်တို့သိတဲ့ အိမ်ဆိုတာ ကိုယ်မွေးဖွားဖို့

where you happen to be born.

ကြုံခဲ့တဲ့ နေရာပဲ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

It's the place where you become yourself.

ဒါဟာ ကိုယ်ကိုယ်တိုင် ဖြစ်လာတဲ့ နေရာပါ။

And yet,

နောက်ပြီးတော့

there is one great problem with movement,

ရွေ့ရှားတာနဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပြီး ပြဿနာကြီး တစ်ရပ်ရှိပါတယ်၊

and that is that it's really hard to get your bearings

ဆိုလိုတာက လေထုအလယ်ထဲမှာ ရှိတဲ့အခါ ဘယ်ကို

when you're in midair.

ဦးတည်မလဲဆိုတာ တော်တော်ခက်တာပါ။

Some years ago, I noticed that I had accumulated

နှစ်အနည်းငယ်က ကျွန်တော်ဟာ United Airlines တစ်ခုတည်းမှာတင်

one million miles on United Airlines alone.

မိုင်တစ်သန်း စုပုံနေတာ သတိပြုမိတယ်။

You all know that crazy system,

အားလုံးသိကြတဲ့ ဒီလောက်ကြောင်တဲ့ စနစ်၊

six days in hell, you get the seventh day free.

ခြောက်ရက် ငရဲခံ၊ သတ္တမနေ့ လွတ်မြောက်နေ့ လွတ် ဆိုတာလေ။

(Laughter)

And I began to think that really,

ကျွန်တော် စတွေးမိတာက တကယ့်

movement was only as good as the sense of stillness

ရွေ့ရှားမှုဟာ ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်းရဲ့ အသိက

that you could bring to it to put it into perspective.

ရုပ်လုံးဖော်ဖို့ ယူဆောင် လာပေးသလိုပဲ ကောင်းတာကိုပါ။

And eight months after my house burned down,

အိမ်မီးလောင်ပြီး ခြောက်လကြာအပြီးမှာ

I ran into a friend who taught at a local high school,

ဒေသတွင်း အထက်တန်းကျောင်းမှာ စာသင်တဲ့ မိတ်ဆွေတစ်ဦးနဲ့

and he said, "I've got the perfect place for you."

ဆုံခဲ့ပြီး သူက "ခင်ဗျားအတွက် ပြီးပြည့်စုံတဲ့နေရာ ကျုပ်မှာရှိတယ်"

"Really?" I said. I'm always a bit skeptical

"တကယ်လား" လို့ မေးရတယ်။ ဒါမျိုးကို

when people say things like that.

နည်းနည်း ယုံလေ့ မရှိဘူးလေ။

"No, honestly," he went on,

"ဟာ တကယ်ပါဗျ"သူက ဆက်ပြောတယ်။

"it's only three hours away by car,

"ကားနဲ့ သုံးမိုင်ပဲဝေးတယ်၊

and it's not very expensive,

အရမ်းလည်း စျေးမကြီးပါဘူး၊

and it's probably not like anywhere you've stayed before."

ခင်ဗျားအရင် နေဖူးတဲ့ နေရာတွေလို မဟုတ်နိုင်လောက်ဘူး။

"Hmm." I was beginning to get slightly intrigued. "What is it?"

"ဟင်း"၊ ကျွန်တော် နည်းနည်း စိတ်ဝင်စားလာပြီး "ဒါက ဘာလဲ၊"

"Well —" Here my friend hemmed and hawed —

"အင်း" ဒီမှာကျွန်တော့မိတ်ဆွေက တွေးတွေးဆဆ ပြောလိုက်တာက

"Well, actually it's a Catholic hermitage."

တကယ်တော့ ဒါက ကက်သိုလစ် သခင်္မ်းကျောင်းပါ။

This was the wrong answer.

ဒီအဖြေမှားပါတယ်။

I had spent 15 years in Anglican schools,

ခရစ်ယာန်ကျောင်းတွေမှာ ၁၅ နှစ်နေခဲ့ဖူးတော့

so I had had enough hymnals and crosses to last me a lifetime.

အသက်တာရှင်သန်ဖို့ ဓမ္မတေးတွေ၊ ကားတိုင်တွေ အတော်ရှိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Several lifetimes, actually.

တကယ်တော့ အသက်တာများစွာပါ။

But my friend assured me that he wasn't Catholic,

ဒါပေမဲ့ မိတ်ဆွေက သူရော၊ သူ့ကျောင်းသားအများစုပါ

nor were most of his students,

ကာသိုလစ်မဟုတ်ဘူးလို့ပြောတယ်၊

but he took his classes there every spring.

ဒါပေမဲ့ နွေဦးတိုင်​း သူ့အတန်းတွေကို အဲဒီကိုခေါ်သွားတယ်။

And as he had it, even the most restless, distractible,

testosterone-addled 15-year-old Californian boy

ဟိုမုန်းကြောင်နေတဲ့ ၁၅ နှစ်သား Californian ကောင်လေးတောင်မှ

only had to spend three days in silence

သုံးရက်ပဲ တိတ်ဆိတ်စွာနေလိုက်ရသေးတယ်၊

and something in him cooled down and cleared out.

သူ့ကိုယ်တွင်းက တစ်ခုခုဟာ ငြိမ်ကျသွားပြီး ရှင်းလင်းသွားတယ်။

He found himself.

သူ့ကိုယ်သူ ပြန်တွေ့သွားပါတယ်။

And I thought, "Anything that works for a 15-year-old boy

ဒါနဲ့ တွေးမိတာက "၁၅ နှစ်သား ကောင်လေး အတွက် အလုပ်ဖြစ်တာဟာ

ought to work for me."

ငါ့အတွက်ဖြစ်သင့်တယ်" ပေါ့။

So I got in my car, and I drove three hours north

ဒါနဲ့ ကားပေါ်တက်ပြီး ပင်လယ် ကမ်းခြေ တစ်လျှောက် မြောက်ဘက်ကို

along the coast,

and the roads grew emptier and narrower,

and then I turned onto an even narrower path,

barely paved, that snaked for two miles

up to the top of a mountain.

နှစ်မိုင်လောက် ကွေ့ကောက်နေတာပါ။

And when I got out of my car,

ကားထဲကထွက်လိုက်တော့

the air was pulsing.

လေက တဝူးဝူး တိုက်နေတယ်။

The whole place was absolutely silent,

နေရာတစ်ခုလုံးဟာ ပကတိ တိတ်ဆိတ်လို့၊

but the silence wasn't an absence of noise.

ဒါပေမဲ့ တိတ်ဆိတ်မှုက အသံကင်းမဲ့ နေတာတော့မဟုတ်ဘူး။

It was really a presence of a kind of energy or quickening.

ဒါဟာ တကယ့်ကို စွမ်းအင် (သို့) အဟုန်မြင့်ခြင်းလိုမျိုး ရှိနေတာပါ။

And at my feet was the great, still blue plate

ကျွန်တော့ ခြေဖျားအောက်မှာက ပစိဖိတ် သမုဒ္ဒရာရဲ့

of the Pacific Ocean.

ငြိမ်သက် ပြာလွင်တဲ့ ပြင်ကြီးပါ။

All around me were 800 acres of wild dry brush.

ကျွန်တော့ဝန်းကျင်မှာ ဧက ၈၀၀ ရှိတဲ့ တောရိုင်း ချုံပုတ်ခြောက်တွေပေါ့။

And I went down to the room in which I was to be sleeping.

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော် အိပ်စက်မယ့် အခန်းဆီကို ဆင်းသွားလိုက်တယ်။

Small but eminently comfortable,

ငယ်ပေမဲ့ အင်မတန်ကို နေသာပါတယ်။

it had a bed and a rocking chair

အိပ်ရာတစ်ခုနဲ့ လှုပ်ကုလားထိုင် တစ်လုံး ပါပြီး

and a long desk and even longer picture windows

စားပွဲရှည်တစ်လုံးနဲ့ ပိုရှည်တဲ့ ရှုခင်း ပြတင်းပေါက်တွေ၊

looking out on a small, private, walled garden,

စည်းရိုးခတ်ထားတဲ့ ကိုယ်ပိုင် ဥယျာဉ်ကို မျှော်ကြည့်ရင်းပေါ့၊

and then 1,200 feet of golden pampas grass

နောက်ပြီး ပေ ၁၂၀၀ ရှိတဲ့ ပင်လယ်ဆီ ဆင်းသွားတဲ့

running down to the sea.

ရွှေရောင် မြက်ခင်းပြင်ပေါ့။

And I sat down, and I began to write,

ပြီးတော့ ထိုင်ချလိုက်ပြီး စာစရေးတယ်၊

and write, and write,

ရေးတယ်၊ ပြီးတော့ ရေးတယ်၊

even though I'd gone there really to get away from my desk.

တကယ် ကိုယ့်စာရေးစားပွဲကနေခွာပြီး၊ အဲဒီကို သွားပြီးတောင်ပေါ့။

And by the time I got up, four hours had passed.

နေရာက မထခင်မှာတင် လေးနာရီကုန်ခဲ့ပါပြီ။

Night had fallen,

မိုးချုပ်လာပါပြီ၊

and I went out under this great overturned saltshaker of stars,

ကြယ်စင်တွေရဲ့ ဒီကျယ်ပြောတဲ့ မှောက်နေတဲ့ ဆားပုလင်းအောက်ကို ထွက်ခဲ့ပြီး

and I could see the tail lights of cars

တောင်ဘက် ၁၂ မိုင် အငူတွေ တစ်ဝိုက်မှာ

disappearing around the headlands 12 miles to the south.

ပျောက်ကွယ်သွားနေကြတဲ့ ကားတွေရဲ့ နောက်မြီးအလင်းတွေကို တွေ့နိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

And it really seemed like my concerns of the previous day

အရင်နေ့က ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ ပူပန်မှုတွေဟာ ပျောက်ကွယ်သွားနေသလို

vanishing.

ထင်ရပါတယ်။

And the next day, when I woke up

တယ်လီဖုန်းတွေ၊ တီဗွီတွေ၊

in the absence of telephones and TVs and laptops,

လက်ပ်တော့တွေ ကင်းတဲ့နေရာမှာ နောက်နေ့အိပ်ရာကနိုးတော့

the days seemed to stretch for a thousand hours.

နေ့တွေဟာ နာရီတစ်ထောင်ကြာ ဆန့်ထွက်နေပုံပါ။

It was really all the freedom I know when I'm traveling,

ဒါဟာ ခရီးထွက်နေတုန်း ကိုယ်သိတဲ့ တကယ့်လုံးဝ လွတ်လပ်မှုတင်မက

but it also profoundly felt like coming home.

အိမ်ကိုရောက်လာသလိုမျိုး နက်နက်ရှိုင်းရှိုင်း ခံစားရပါတယ်။

And I'm not a religious person,

ကျွန်တော်က ဘာသာရေးသမား မဟုတ်တော့

so I didn't go to the services.

ဝတ်ပြုပွဲတွေ မသွားခဲ့ဘူး။

I didn't consult the monks for guidance.

ဘုန်းကြီးတွေဆီမှာ လမ်းညွှန်ချက်တွေ မယူခဲ့ဘူး။

I just took walks along the monastery road

ဘုန်ကြီးကျောင်းလမ်းမှာ လမ်းလျှောက်ထွက်ပြီး

and sent postcards to loved ones.

ကိုယ်ချစ်ခင်သူတွေဆီ ပို့စ်ကဒ်တွေ ပို့ခဲ့တာပါ။

I looked at the clouds,

တိမ်တွေကို ကြည့်ခဲ့တယ်၊

and I did what is hardest of all for me to do usually,

ကိုယ့်အတွက် လုပ်နေကျအရာကို လုပ်ဖို့အခက်ခဲဆုံးဖြစ်တာပါ။

which is nothing at all.

ဒါက ဘာမှ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

And I started to go back to this place,

ဒီနေရာကို ပြန်စသွားခဲ့တယ်၊

and I noticed that I was doing my most important work there

မမြင်ကွယ်ရာမှာ ထိုင်နေရင်းနဲ့ ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ အရေးကြီးဆုံး အလုပ်ကို

invisibly just by sitting still,

လုပ်နေတာလို့ သတိထားမိပြီး

and certainly coming to my most critical decisions

သေချာတာက နောက်ဆုံး အီးမေးလ်ကနေ နောက်ချိန်းဆိုမှုကို ပြေးနေတုန်းက

the way I never could when I was racing

ဘယ်လိုမှကို မတတ်နိုင်တဲ့

from the last email to the next appointment.

အရေးကြီးတဲ့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်တွေဆီ လာနေတာပါ။

And I began to think that something in me

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်တွင်းက တကယ်ပဲ ငြိမ်သက်မှုကို

had really been crying out for stillness,

ဟစ်အော်ခေါ်နေတာကို စတင်တွေးမိလာတယ်၊

but of course I couldn't hear it

ဒါပေမဲ့ တကယ်တမ်း ကိုယ်က အရမ်း

because I was running around so much.

ပတ်ချာ ပြေးနေတော့ မကြားနိုင်ခဲ့ဘူး။

I was like some crazy guy who puts on a blindfold

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ မျက်နှာကို စည်းထားပြီး ဘာတစ်ခုမှ

and then complains that he can't see a thing.

မမြင်ရဘူးလို့ ညည်းတွားနေတဲ့ အရူးတစ်ကောင်လို့ ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

And I thought back to that wonderful phrase

ကောင်လေးတစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့ Seneca ဆီက နာယူ ခဲ့ဖူးတဲ့

I had learned as a boy from Seneca,

အံ့ဖွယ်ရာ စကားစုတစ်ခုကို ပြန်တွေးမိခဲ့တယ်။

in which he says, "That man is poor

ဒီမှာ သူပြောတာက "ဆင်းရဲမှုဆိုတာက မရှိတဲ့သူ

not who has little but who hankers after more."

မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ ပိုပြီးတောင့်တနေသူသာပါ"တဲ့။

And, of course, I'm not suggesting

တကယ်တော့ လူတိုင်း ဘုန်းကြီးကျောင်း

that anybody here go into a monastery.

သွားဖို့ အဆိုပြုနေတာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး၊

That's not the point.

ဒါက အဓိကမကျပါဘူး။

But I do think it's only by stopping movement

ဒါပေမဲ့ တကယ်တွေးမိတာက ရွေ့ရှားမှုကို ရပ်လိုက်တာနဲ့တင်

that you can see where to go.

ဘယ်ကိုသွားရမယ်ဆိုတာ သိမြင်နိုင်တာကိုပါ။

And it's only by stepping out of your life and the world

ပြီးတော့ ကိုယ့်ဘဝ၊ ကိုယ့်ကမ္ဘာထဲ ကနေ လှမ်းထွက်လိုက်တာနဲ့တင်

that you can see what you most deeply care about

ကိုယ် အနက်ရှိုင်းဆုံး ကြောင့်ကြစိုက်တဲ့ အရာကိုမြင်နိုင်ပြီး

and find a home.

အိမ်တစ်လုံးကို တွေ့နိုင်တာပါ။

And I've noticed so many people now

အခု လူအတော်များများဟာ စိတ်တည်ငြိမ်ဖို့ပဲ

take conscious measures to sit quietly for 30 minutes

မနက်တိုင်း နာရီဝက် ဆိတ်ငြိမ်စွာ ထိုင်ဖို့ သတိရှိတဲ့

every morning just collecting themselves

အစီအမံတွေ လုပ်ကြတာ သတိပြုမိတယ်၊

in one corner of the room without their devices,

​သူတို့ ကိရိယာတွေကင်းတဲ့ အခန်းထောင့် တစ်ထောင့်မှာ၊

or go running every evening,

(သို့) ညနေတိုင်း ပြေးတာ

or leave their cell phones behind

(သို့) မိတ်ဆွေတစ်ယောက်နဲ့ အကြာကြီး

when they go to have a long conversation with a friend.

စကားပြောဖို့ သွားတဲ့အခါ ဆဲလ်ဖုန်း တွေ ချန်ထားခဲ့တာတွေပေါ့။

Movement is a fantastic privilege,

​ရွေ့ရှားမှုဟာ ကြီးကျယ်တဲ့ အခွင့်ထူး တစ်ရပ်ဖြစ်ပြီး

and it allows us to do so much that our grandparents

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဘိုးဘွားတွေ တစ်ခါမှ အိပ်မက် မမက်နိုင်လောက်တာ အများကြီး

could never have dreamed of doing.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို လုပ်ခွင့်ပေးပါတယ်။

But movement, ultimately,

ဒါပေမဲ့ နောက်ဆုံးတော့ ရွေ့ရှားမှုဟာ

only has a meaning if you have a home to go back to.

ပြန်စရာ အိမ်တစ်လုံးရှိမှပဲ အဓိပ္ပါယ်ရှိတာပါ။

And home, in the end, is of course

တကယ်တမ်း အိမ်ဆိုတာလည်း အဆုံးကျတော့

not just the place where you sleep.

ကိုယ်အိပ်စက်တဲ့ နေရာပဲ မဟုတ်ဘူးလေ။

It's the place where you stand.

ဒါက ကိုယ်ရပ်တည်တဲ့ နေရာပါ။
