I was one of the only kids in college who had a reason

من یەکێک بووم لەو تاکە خوێندکارانەی زانکۆ کە هۆکارم هەبوو

to go to the P.O. box at the end of the day,

and that was mainly because my mother has never believed

in email, in Facebook, in texting or cell phones in general.

And so while other kids were BBM-ing their parents,

I was literally waiting by the mailbox

to get a letter from home to see how the weekend had gone,

which was a little frustrating when Grandma was in the hospital,

but I was just looking for some sort of scribble,

some unkempt cursive from my mother.

And so when I moved to New York City after college

ئیتر دوای کۆلێژ لە نیویۆرک جێگیر بووم

and got completely sucker-punched in the face by depression,

دڵتەنگی بە تەواوی پەلاماری دام

I did the only thing I could think of at the time.

بۆیە ئەو تاکە شتەم کرد لەو کاتە دەمتوانی بیری لێبکەمەوە

I wrote those same kinds of letters that my mother had written me

هەمان ئەو جۆری نامانەم نوسی کە دایکم بۆی دەنووسیم

for strangers, and tucked them all throughout the city,

بۆ خەڵکی نەناسراو و بە ناو شاردا بڵاوم کردنەوە

dozens and dozens of them. I left them everywhere,

دەرزەن بە دەرزەن، لە هەموو شوێنێ

in cafes and in libraries, at the U.N., everywhere.

لە کافێ و کتێبخانەکان لە نەتەوە یەکگرتووەکان، لە هەموو شوێنێ

I blogged about those letters and the days

بلۆگم دەکرد دەربارەی نامەکان و رۆژەکانم

when they were necessary, and I posed

کاتیک پیویست بوایە پۆستم دەکرد

a kind of crazy promise to the Internet:

وە بەڵێنێکی شێتانەم ئاراستەی تۆرە کۆمەڵایەتییەکان کرد

that if you asked me for a hand-written letter,

کە ئەگەر داوای نامەیەکی دەستنووسم لێ بکەیت

I would write you one, no questions asked.

بۆت دەنووسم، بە بێ پرسیار کردن

Overnight, my inbox morphed into this harbor of heartbreak --

لە شەوێکدا، سندوقەکەم بوو بە پەناگەیەک بۆ دڵشکاوەکان

a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied

دایکێکی تەنیا لە ساکرامێنتۆ کچێک بوو سەرزەنشت ئەکرا

in rural Kansas, all asking me, a 22-year-old girl

Well, today I fuel a global organization

ئەمڕۆ من بوومەتە بزوێنەری ڕیکخراوێکی جیهانی

that is fueled by those trips to the mailbox,

کە هۆکاری سەرەکی بزواندنی ئەو ڕۆشتنانەی بوو بۆ پۆستخانە

fueled by the ways in which we can harness social media

ئەو شێوازانەی سوودوەرگرتن لە تۆڕی کۆمەڵایەتی کە پێشتر

like never before to write and mail strangers letters

کە پێشتر نەبوو ئێمە نامە بۆ کەسانی نەناسراو بنوسین و بۆپان پۆست بکەین

when they need them most, but most of all,

لە کاتێکدا کە زۆر پێویستیانە، بەڵام لە هەمووی گرنگتر

fueled by crates of mail like this one, my trusty mail crate,

filled with the scriptings of ordinary people,

strangers writing letters to other strangers not because

they're ever going to meet and laugh over a cup of coffee,

رۆژێک دێت و یەکتر دەبینن و بەدەم کوپێک قاوەوە پێدەکەنن

but because they have found one another by way of letter-writing.

بەڵکو لەبەر ئەوەی یەکتریان لە ڕێگای نامە نوسینەوە دۆزیوەتەوە

But, you know, the thing that always gets me

بەڵام ئەوەی بەردەوام پێی سەرسامم

about these letters is that most of them have been written

by people that have never known themselves loved on a piece of paper.

They could not tell you about the ink of their own love letters.

They're the ones from my generation,

the ones of us that have grown up into a world

ئەوانەی گەشەیان کردۆتە ناو دونیایەک

where everything is paperless, and where some

of our best conversations have happened upon a screen.

گفتوگۆیە هەرە خۆشەکانمان لەسەر شاشەیەک روویداوە

We have learned to diary our pain onto Facebook,

فێربووین ئازارەکانمان لەسەر فەیسبووک بنوسینەوە

and we speak swiftly in 140 characters or less.

وە بە ١٤٠ پیت یاخود کەمتر دەدوێین

But what if it's not about efficiency this time?

بەڵام ئەی ئەگەر ئەمجارە بابەتەکە لێهاتووی نەبێت

I was on the subway yesterday with this mail crate,

دوێنێ لە شەمەندەفەرێکی ژێرزەمینیدا بووم بە سندوقی نامەکانەوە

which is a conversation starter, let me tell you.

کە گفتوگۆ بزوێنەرە با پێتان بڵێم

If you ever need one, just carry one of these. (Laughter)

هەر کاتێ ویستت گفتوگۆ بکەیت یەکێ لەمانە هەڵبگرە

And a man just stared at me, and he was like,

پیاوێک هەر سەیری دەکردم وە ووتی

"Well, why don't you use the Internet?"

"باشە، بۆ هێڵی ئینتەرنێت بەکار ناهێنیت"

And I thought, "Well, sir, I am not a strategist,

منیش گووتم "بەڕێز، من نە لە ستراتیجدا لێهاتووم،"

nor am I specialist. I am merely a storyteller."

نە پسپۆڕم، تەنها چیرۆکبێژم"

And so I could tell you about a woman

بۆیە من دەتوانم باسی ژنێکتان بۆ بکەم کە

whose husband has just come home from Afghanistan,

خێزانەکەی تازە لە ئەفغانستان هاتۆتەوە

and she is having a hard time unearthing this thing called conversation,

وە کێشەی هەیە چۆن گفتوگۆیەک بخاتە ڕوو

and so she tucks love letters throughout the house

بۆیە نامەی خۆشەویستی بەناو مالەکەدا بڵاودەکاتەوە

as a way to say, "Come back to me.

وەک بڵێی "بگەڕێوە بۆ لام"

Find me when you can."

بمدۆزەوە ئەگەر توانیت"

Or a girl who decides that she is going to leave love letters

یاخود کچێک کە بڕیار دەدات نامەیەکی خۆشەویستی بەجێ بهێڵێت

around her campus in Dubuque, Iowa, only to find

لە کەمپی زانکۆکەیان لە دیبوک، ئەیوا، کە رۆژی دواتر سەیر دەکات

her efforts ripple-effected the next day when she walks out

هەوڵەکانی وەک شەپۆل رەنگی داوەتەوە کاتێک پێ دەنێتە

onto the quad and finds love letters hanging

ناو گۆرەپانەکەو دەبینێت نامەی خۆشەویستی

from the trees, tucked in the bushes and the benches.

بە دارەکانەوەن، لە ناو دار و درەخت و کورسییەکان شاردراونەتەوە

Or the man who decides that he is going to take his life,

یاخود ئەو پیاوەی بڕیار دەدات کۆتایی بە ژیانی خۆی بهێنێت

uses Facebook as a way to say goodbye

فەیسبووک بەکار دەهێنێت وەک ڕێگایەکی ماڵئاوایی

to friends and family.

لە خێزان و هاوڕێکانی

Well, tonight he sleeps safely with a stack of letters

بەمشەو بە سەلامەتی دەنوێ بە کۆمەڵە نامەیەک

just like this one tucked beneath his pillow,

وەک ئەمە لەژێر سەرینەکەیدا

scripted by strangers who were there for him when.

کە لە لایەن کەسانی نەناسراو نوسراون کە لێرەن لەبەر ئەو

These are the kinds of stories that convinced me

ئەم جۆرە چیرۆکانە کە دڵنیایان کردمەوە

that letter-writing will never again need to flip back her hair

کە نامە نوسین پێویست ناکات بە خۆیەوە بنازێت

and talk about efficiency, because she is an art form now,

باسی لێهاتووی بکات، چونکە ئەو ئیستا هونەرە

all the parts of her, the signing, the scripting, the mailing,

is pinging and we've got six conversations rolling in at once,

that is an art form

that does not fall down to the Goliath of "get faster,"

no matter how many social networks we might join.

We still clutch close these letters to our chest,

هەمیشە ئەو نامانە لە نزیک سنگمان دەگرین

to the words that speak louder than loud,

بۆ ئەو وشانەی کە لە بڵند بڵندتر دەدوێن

when we turn pages into palettes to say the things

کاتێ پەڕەکان دەکەین بە تەختەی نیگارکێشان بۆ ووتنی

that we have needed to say,

ئەو شتانەی پێویستە بیڵێین

the words that we have needed to write, to sisters

ئەو وشانەی کە دەمێکە ویستومانە بۆ خوشک و برا و

and brothers and even to strangers, for far too long.

تەنانەت کەسانی بێگانەی بنووسین
