So today, I want us to reflect

Other than that, there's not much of a problem.

So what's the data?

So the data on dropping out is amazing.

Boys are 30 percent more likely than girls

In Canada, five boys drop out for every three girls.

Girls outperform boys now at every level,

There's a 10 percent differential

What's the evidence of wiping out?

First, it's a new fear of intimacy.

Intimacy means physical, emotional connection

with somebody else --

and especially with somebody of the opposite sex

who gives off ambiguous, contradictory,

phosphorescent signals.

And every year there's research done

매년 대학생을 상대로

on self-reported shyness among college students.

내향성 자가진단 조사를 실시합니다.

And we're seeing a steady increase among males.

여기서 남학생들의 꾸준한 증가세를 보게 됩니다.

And this is two kinds.

여기엔 2가지 종류가 있습니다.

It's a social awkwardness.

하나는 사회적 부적응입니다.

The old shyness was a fear of rejection.

과거 수줍음은 거절에 대한 두려움이었습니다.

It's a social awkwardness like you're a stranger in a foreign land.

외국 땅에서 낯선이가 된 것 같은 사회적 어색함이죠.

They don't know what to say, they don't know what to do,

뭐라고 말해야할지, 뭘 해야할지 모릅니다.

especially one-on-one [with the] opposite sex.

특히 이성간에 일대일에서 말입니다.

They don't know the language of face contact,

그들은 대면 접촉시의 언어,

the non-verbal and verbal set of rules

that enable you to comfortably talk to somebody else,

listen to somebody else.

There's something I'm developing here called social intensity syndrome,

which tries to account for why guys really prefer

male bonding over female mating.

남자끼리 모이는 것을 선호하는지 밝히는 겁니다.

It turns out, from earliest childhood,

boys, and then men,

소년기를 거쳐 남성들은

prefer the company of guys --

남성집단을 선호한다는 것이 밝혀졌습니다 –

physical company.

신체적 집단이죠.

And there's actually a cortical arousal we're looking at,

because guys have been with guys

in teams, in clubs, in gangs, in fraternities,

especially in the military, and then in pubs.

And this peaks at Super Bowl Sunday

when guys would rather be in a bar with strangers,

watching a totally overdressed Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers,

rather than Jennifer Lopez totally naked in the bedroom.

제니퍼 로페즈가 침실에서 벌거벗은 것을 보는 것보다 좋아하죠.

The problem is they now prefer

[the] asynchronistic Internet world

to the spontaneous interaction

in social relationships.

What are the causes? Well, it's an unintended consequence.

I think it's excessive Internet use in general, excessive video gaming,

excessive new access to pornography.

The problem is these are arousal addictions.

문제는 이것이 자극 중독이라는 겁니다.

Drug addiction, you simply want more.

약물 중독의 경우, 더 많은 양을 원하는데요.

Arousal addiction, you want different.

자극 중독은 뭔가 새로운 것을 원하죠.

Drugs, you want more of the same -- different.

약물은, 같은 것을 더 많이 원하는 거구요. – 다릅니다.

So you need the novelty in order for the arousal to be sustained.

자극이 지속되려면 참신한 것이 필요합니다.

And the problem is the industry is supplying it.

문제는 산업이 그걸 공급한다는 겁니다.

Jane McGonigal told us last year

작년 TED에서 제인 맥고니걸이 말하길

that by the time a boy is 21,

소년이 21살이 될 때까지

he's played 10,000 hours of video games,

비디오게임을 1만시간동안

most of that in isolation.

거의 혼자 있는 상황에서 한다고 했죠.

As you remember, Cindy Gallop said

men don't know the difference

between making love and doing porn.

The average boy now watches 50 porn video clips a week.

And there's some guy watching a hundred, obviously.

And the porn industry is the fastest growing industry in America --

So the effect, very quickly,

is it's a new kind of arousal.

Boys' brains are being digitally rewired in a totally new way

for change, novelty, excitement and constant arousal.

That means they're totally out of sync in traditional classes,

which are analog, static, interactively passive.

They're also totally out of sync

So what's the solution? It's not my job.

and women who would like a real man

and contribute to the evolutionary pressures

to keep our species above banana slugs.
