This is my first trip,

And while this is not my first visit to the U.K.,

I have to say that I am glad that this is my first official visit.

The special relationship between the United States and the U.K.

미국과 영국 간의 특별한 관계는

is based not only on the relationship between governments,

국가 정부간의 교류뿐만 아니라

but the common language and the values that we share,

공통의 언어, 그리고 우리가 공유하고 있는 가치관에 근간을 두고 있습니다

and I'm reminded of that by watching you all today.

오늘 이곳에 와서 여러분들을 보니 그 사실을 더욱 체감하게 되네요.

During my visit I've been especially honored

방문 일정중 저는 정말 영광스럽게도

to meet some of Britain's most extraordinary women --

women who are paving the way for all of you.

And I'm honored to meet you,

the future leaders of Great Britain and this world.

And although the circumstances of our lives may seem very distant,

with me standing here as the First Lady of the United States of America,

and you, just getting through school,

I want you to know that we have very much in common.

For nothing in my life's path

would have predicted that I'd be standing here

as the first African-American First Lady

of the United States of America.

예측할 만한 것들은 없었습니다.

There is nothing in my story that would land me here.

I wasn't raised with wealth or resources

나는 부유한 가정 환경에서 자라지도 않았고

or any social standing to speak of.

자랑할 만한 사회적 배경을 가지고 있지도 않았습니다.

I was raised on the South Side of Chicago.

저는 유년기를 시카고 남쪽 지역에서 보냈는데요

That's the real part of Chicago.

그 지역은 1차산업 노동계층이 집중되어 있는 시카고의 본모습을 보여주는 곳이라 할 수 있죠.

And I was the product of a working-class community.

저는 평범한 임금노동자 가정에서 태어났습니다

My father was a city worker all of his life,

아버지는 평생 도시노동자로 일하셨고

and my mother was a stay-at-home mom.

어머니는 육아와 가정일을 도맡아 하셨던

And she stayed at home to take care of me and my older brother.

전업주부였습니다

Neither of them attended university.

두 분은 모두 대학교육을 받으신 적이 없습니다.

My dad was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis

아버지는 한창시절 여러번이나

in the prime of his life.

동맥경화 판정을 받으셨는데요.

But even as it got harder for him to walk

걷는 것이 어려워지고

and get dressed in the morning --

매일아침 옷을 입는 것이 큰 고역일 만큼

I saw him struggle more and more --

상태가 악화되는데도 불구하고

my father never complained about his struggle.

저는 아버지가 단 한번도 투병생활에 대하여 불평하시는걸 들어본 적이 없습니다.

He was grateful for what he had.

아버지는 열악한 상황에서도 항상 현재 가진 것에 감사하는 마음으로

He just woke up a little earlier and worked a little harder.

이전보다 조금 더 일찍일어나고 조금 더 힘을 내셔서 일하셨습니다.

And my brother and I were raised with all that you really need:

그런 아버지 밑에서 저희 남매는 성장하기 위해 진실로 필요한 모든 것을 배울 수 있었습니다.

love, strong values

그것은 바로 사랑과 굳건한 가치관이었고

and a belief that with a good education

좋은 교육의 필요성에 대한 믿음이었으며

and a whole lot of hard work,

전심을 다한 노력이면

that there was nothing that we could not do.

이루지 못할 것이 없다는 믿음이이었습니다.

I am an example of what's possible

저는 여학생들이 어린시절에 가까이에 있는 사람들로부터

when girls from the very beginning of their lives

사랑으로 보살핌 받았을 때

are loved and nurtured by the people around them.

무한한 가능성을 가질 수 있다는 사례의 산 증인입니다.

I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life:

저는 성장기에 훌륭한 여성들을 보고 자라왔습니다.

grandmothers, teachers, aunts, cousins, neighbors,

저의 할머니,선생님,이모님,조카와 이웃들은

who taught me about quiet strength and dignity.

저에게 조용한 믿음의 힘과 존엄을 가르쳐주었습니다

And my mother, the most important role model in my life,

그 중에서도 가장 소중한 롤모델이신 저의 어머니는

who lives with us at the White House

지금 저희가족과함께 백악관에서 지내시며

and helps to care for our two little daughters,

제 두 딸 Malia와 Sasha를

Malia and Sasha.

돌봐주고 계십니다.

She's an active presence in their lives, as well as mine,

어머니는 나의 삶뿐만 아니라 제 두 딸의 삶에 있어서도

and is instilling in them

영향력있는 존재로서

the same values that she taught me and my brother:

저희 남매에게 가르쳐 주신 것과 똑같이

things like compassion, and integrity,

타인에 대한 연민,성실,자신감 그리고

and confidence, and perseverance --

인내와 같은 가치들을 천천히 체득할 수 있도록 교육해주고 계십니다.

all of that wrapped up in an unconditional love

귀중한 가르침이 오직 할머니만이 베풀 수 있는 무조건적인 사랑과 함께

that only a grandmother can give.

손녀들에게 전달되고 있는 것이죠.

I was also fortunate enough to be cherished and encouraged

저는 운이 좋게도 용기를 북돋아 주시는 몇몇의 훌륭한 남자 롤모델들도

by some strong male role models as well,

가질 수 있었습니다.

including my father, my brother, uncles and grandfathers.

아버지를 비롯하여 오빠,삼촌,할아버지가 바로 저의 롤모델이셨죠.

The men in my life taught me some important things, as well.

그분들 또한 삶에 있어 무척 중요한 점들을 몇가지 가르쳐 주셨습니다.

They taught me about what a respectful relationship

이를테면 사랑하는 사람들 간에 있어

should look like between men and women.

바람직한 관계는 어떤 것인지,

They taught me about what a strong marriage feels like:

강한 유대관계를 가진 결혼생활은 어떤 모습을 띄는지 등에 대해 말이죠.

that it's built on faith and commitment

서로에 대한 신뢰와 책임감 그리고 상대방의 장점을 인정함으로서

and an admiration for each other's unique gifts.

이상적인 유대관계가 형성될 수 있다는 것을 배울 수 있었습니다.

They taught me about what it means

아버지가 된다는 것

to be a father

또한 가장으로서 가정을 이끌어 간다는 것이

and to raise a family.

어떤 의미를 지니는지 가르쳐 주셨어요.

And not only to invest in your own home

그분들은 비단 자신의 가정 뿐만이 아니라

but to reach out and help raise kids

같은 공동체에 속해 있는 어린이들이 올바르게 성장할 수 있도록

in the broader community.

도움을 베풀며 살았습니다

And these were the same qualities

저는 이같은 자질들을

that I looked for in my own husband,

제 남편으로부터도 찾을 수 있었습니다.

Barack Obama.

And when we first met,

저희 부부가 연애 초기에

one of the things that I remember is that he took me out on a date.

데이트 하면서 겪었던 일들이 기억에 남는데요.

And his date was to go with him to a community meeting.

한 예를 들자면 Barack은 우리의 첫 데이트로 저를 지역공동체 소모임에 데리고 갔답니다.

I know, how romantic.

네,참 로맨틱한 사람이죠?

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But when we met, Barack was a community organizer.

제 남편 Barack은 지역공동체 운영위원이었거든요.

He worked, helping people to find jobs

그는 사람들이 직업을 찾도록 도움을 주었고

and to try to bring resources into struggling neighborhoods.

어려움을 겪는 이웃들에게 힘이 되고자 노력했습니다.

As he talked to the residents in that community center,

그는 시민회관에서의 연설에서 주민들에게

he talked about two concepts.

두가지 컨셉을 제시하였습니다.

He talked about "the world as it is" and "the world as it should be."

"지금 세상의 모습"과 "마땅히 보여야 할 세상의 모습"이 그 두가지 컨셉이었습니다.

And I talked about this throughout the entire campaign.

이 컨셉은 제가 대선 캠페인에서 항상 언급하던 것이기도 한데요.

What he said, that all too often,

그는 이 이야기를 기회만 되면 이야기 했습니다.

is that we accept the distance between those two ideas.

우리가 이 두 개념의 차이를 인지하고

And sometimes we settle for the world as it is,

우리는 종종 세계의 현 모습에 안주해 버립니다

even when it doesn't reflect our values and aspirations.

세상이 우리의 가치와 염원을 반영하지 않을 때 말입니다

But Barack reminded us on that day,

all of us in that room, that we all know

what our world should look like.

We know what fairness and justice and opportunity look like.

We all know.

And he urged the people in that meeting,

in that community,

to devote themselves to closing the gap

between those two ideas,

to work together to try to make the world as it is

and the world as it should be, one and the same.

And I think about that today because I am

reminded and convinced that all of you in this school

are very important parts of closing that gap.

You are the women who will build the world as it should be.

여러분은 세상을 "마땅히 그러해야할 모습"으로 건설할 여성들 입니다.

You're going to write the next chapter in history.

바로 여러분이 역사의 새 장을 쓰게 될 장본인들 입니다.

Not just for yourselves, but for your generation

여러분 자신뿐만이 아니라 여러분 세대 전체와

and generations to come.

다음 세대를 위해서요.

And that's why getting a good education

이것이 좋은 교육이 중요성을 가지는

is so important.

정말 중요한 이유입니다

That's why all of this that you're going through --

좋은 선생님을 만날때도, 마음에 들지 않는 선생님을 만날 때도 있죠.

the ups and the downs, the teachers that you love and the teachers that you don't --

하지만 여러분이 삶의 굴곡을 겪는 이유는 그만큼 중요한 존재이기 때문입니다.

why it's so important.

그것이 이 어려움이 중요한 이유입니다.

Because communities and countries and ultimately the world

공동체, 한 국가, 나아가 세계의 힘은

are only as strong as the health of their women.

그 구성원이 되는 여성들의 건강에 비례합니다.

And that's important to keep in mind.

여러분들이 이 사실을 꼭 가슴속에 기억하고 있기 바랍니다.

Part of that health includes an outstanding education.

훌륭한 교육은 개인의 건강을 형성하는 핵심요소 입니다.

The difference between a struggling family and a healthy one

건강한 가정과 그렇지 못한 가정의 차이는

is often the presence of an empowered woman

여성의 자율적 주도성이 주어져 있는지의 여부나

or women at the center of that family.

여성이 가정의 중심에 있는가의 여부에 따라 판단할 수 있습니다.

The difference between a broken community and a thriving one

번성하는 공동체와 붕괴된 공동체의 차이는

is often the healthy respect between men and women

남성과 여성이 서로 각자가 기여하는 바에 대하여 감사하는 마음과 존경이

who appreciate the contributions each other makes to society.

잘 형성되어 있는지에서 찾을 수 있죠.

The difference between a languishing nation

국가차원에선 어떨까요.

and one that will flourish

융성하는 나라와 쇠락하는 나라의 차이는

is the recognition that we need equal access to education

남녀를 불문하고 어린이들에게 동일한 교육의 기회를 주어야 한다는

for both boys and girls.

인식이 형성되어 있는가에서 찾을 수 있습니다.

And this school, named after the U.K.'s first female doctor,

영국의 첫 여성의학박사의 이름에서 학교 이름을 짓고

and the surrounding buildings named for Mexican artist Frida Kahlo,

멕시코 여성 예술가인 Frida Kahlo,

Mary Seacole,

플로렌스의 흑인 나이팅게일로 알려진 자메이카 출신 간호사인 Mary Seacole

the Jamaican nurse known as the "black Florence Nightingale,"

and the English author, Emily Bronte,

이 학교는

honor women who fought sexism, racism and ignorance,

자신의 영혼을 채우기 위해 열정을 좇아

to pursue their passions to feed their own souls.

성차별, 인종차별과 무지를 위해 싸웠던 여성들을 기리고 있습니다.

They allowed for no obstacles.

그분들은 눈 앞의 어려움에 굴하지 않았습니다.

As the sign said back there, "without limitations."

They knew no other way to live

자신의 이상을 추구하며 사는 것이

than to follow their dreams.

And having done so, these women

moved many obstacles.

And they opened many new doors

for millions of female doctors and nurses

and artists and authors,

all of whom have followed them.

And by getting a good education,

바로 이들처럼,여러분 또한 좋은 교육을 받음으로써

you too can control your own destiny.

If you want to know the reason why I'm standing here,

저는 교육에 대해 이야기 하고자

it's because of education.

이 자리에 서 있습니다.

I never cut class. Sorry, I don't know if anybody is cutting class.

전 한번도 수업에 빠진 적이 없어요. 사실 누가 수업에 빠진다해도 저는 모릅니다

I never did it.

제 자신이 그래본 일이 없으니까요.

I loved getting As.

전 A학점 받는 것을 아주 좋아하는 학생이었습니다.

I liked being smart.

똑똑한 학생으로 평가받는게 좋았어요.

I liked being on time. I liked getting my work done.

기한을 맞추고, 일을 완성하는 일을 좋아했고요.

I thought being smart was cooler than anything in the world.

우수한 학생이 되는 것은 어떤 것보다 멋진 일이라 생각했죠.

And you too, with these same values,

그리고 여러분들도, 이 같은 가치관을 가지고

can control your own destiny.

여러분 자신의 운명을 이끌어 나갈 수 있습니다.

You too can pave the way.

여러분도 삶을 개척할 수 있어요.

You too can realize your dreams,

여러분, 여러분도 꿈을 실현할 수 있습니다.

and then your job is to reach back

꿈을 실현한 후에는 지금의 기억을 돌이켜보고 직업을 통해서

and to help someone just like you do the same thing.

여러분과 같은 상황에 있는 사람들을 도와줄 수 있도록 하세요.

History proves that it doesn't matter

역사가 증명하듯,

whether you come from a council estate

여러분이 공동주택단지에서 생활했건 국가보조시설 출신이건 이런 사실은

or a country estate.

전혀 중요하지 않습니다.

Your success will be determined

여러분들의 성공은 여러분 자신의 강건한 자세와

by your own fortitude,

자신감, 그리고 개개인의 노력의 결과로 따라오게 될 것입니다.

your own confidence, your own individual hard work.

That is true. That is the reality of the world that we live in.

My husband works in this big office.

제 남편은 백악관 내의 아주 큰 사무실에서 일합니다

They call it the Oval Office.

사람들은 그 사무실을 Oval Office라고 부르죠

In the White House, there's the desk that he sits at --

그 Office에는 제 남편이 항상 앉아서 업무를 보는 책상이 있는데요.

it's called the Resolute desk.

Resolute Desk라고 불리는 책상이죠.

It was built by the timber of Her Majesty's Ship Resolute

사실 Resolute Desk는 영국군함 Resolute의 목재로 제작되어

and given by Queen Victoria.

빅토리아 여왕께서 선물로 주신 책상입니다.

It's an enduring symbol of the friendship between our two nations.

이 책상은 미국과 영국, 두 나라 사이의 영속적인 우정의 상징이라 할 수 있습니다.

And its name, Resolute,

그리고 Resolute(주-불굴의, 단호한의 뜻)라는 그 이름은

is a reminder of the strength of character that's required

한 사람이 가져야 할 강인한 기질을 일깨워줍니다

not only to lead a country,

비단 나라를 지도하기 위함 뿐만이 아니라

but to live a life of purpose, as well.

목적이 이끄는 삶을 살기 위해서 말입니다

And I hope in pursuing your dreams, you all remain resolute,

that you go forward without limits,

and that you use your talents -- because there are many; we've seen them;

Because the world is big.

And it's full of challenges.

And we need strong, smart, confident young women

to stand up and take the reins.
