Well, the subject of difficult negotiation

reminds me of one of my favorite stories from the Middle East,

मुझे मेरी एक पसंदीदा कहानी की याद दिलाता है,

of a man who left to his three sons, 17 camels.

एक ऐसे आदमी की जो अपने तीन बेटों के लिये १७ ऊँटों की विरासत छोड गया था।

पहले बेटे के लिये उसने आधे ऊँट मुकर्रर किये थे;

To the first son, he left half the camels;

to the second son, he left a third of the camels;

दूसरे के लिये, एक तिहाई;

and to the youngest son, he left a ninth of the camels.

और सबसे छोटे बेटे के लिये, ऊँटों का नवाँ हिस्सा।

तीनों बेटे ऊँटों का फ़ैसला करने बैठे।

The three sons got into a negotiation -- 17 doesn't divide by two.

१७ न तो दो से भाग खाता है।

न ही उसे तीन भागों में बाँटा जा सकता है।

It doesn't divide by three.

It doesn't divide by nine.

और ९ से भी उसे भाग नहीं दिया जा सकता।

Brotherly tempers started to get strained.

अब भाइयों में अन-बन शुरु हो गयी।

Finally, in desperation,

और अंत में, मरता क्या न करता,

they went and they consulted a wise old woman.

वो एक बुद्धिमान बुढिया के पास सलाह के लिये पहुँचे।

The wise old woman thought about their problem for a long time,

बुद्धिमान बुढिया ने उनकी समस्या पर देर तक विचार किया,

और फ़िर उसने वापस आ कर कहा,

and finally she came back and said, "Well, I don't know if I can help you,

"देखो, मुझे नहीं पता कि मैं तुम्हारी मदद कर सकती हूँ या नहीं,

लेकिन अगर तुम्हें चाहिये, तो तुम मेरा ऊँट ले जा सकते हो।"

but at least, if you want, you can have my camel."

तो अब उनके पास १८ ऊँट हो गये।

So then, they had 18 camels.

पहले बेटे ने अपना आधा हिस्सा ले लिया - १८ का आधा ९ होता है।

The first son took his half -- half of 18 is nine.

मंझले बेटे ने एक-तिहाई ले लिया - १८ का तिहाई ६ होता है।

The second son took his third -- a third of 18 is six.

The youngest son took his ninth -- a ninth of 18 is two.

और सबसे छोटे बेटे ने नवाँ हिस्सा लिया --

१८ का नवाँ हिस्सा दो होता है।

You get 17.

९, ६, और २ मिला कर कुल १७ होते हैं।

They had one camel left over.

तो उनके पास एक ऊँट बच गया।

They gave it back to the wise old woman.

और उसे उन्होंने उस बुढिया को वापस कर दिया।

Now, if you think about that story for a moment,

अब अगर आप इस कहानी पर गौर करें,

I think it resembles a lot of the difficult negotiations

तो ये काफ़ी करीब है

we get involved in.

They start off like 17 camels, no way to resolve it.

वो इसी १७ ऊँटों वाली स्थिति से शुरु होती है - जिनका निपटान असंभव लगता है।

Somehow, what we need to do

is step back from those situations, like that wise old woman,

look at the situation through fresh eyes

and come up with an 18th camel.

Finding that 18th camel in the world's conflicts

दुनिया के कठिन मसलों में इस अट्ठारहवें ऊँट की खोज़ ही

has been my life passion.

मेरे जीवन की साधना रही है।

I basically see humanity a bit like those three brothers.

मुझे मानव-जाति इन तीन भाइयों जैसी ही लगती है;

We're all one family.

हम सब एक परिवार हैं।

We know that scientifically,

और ये तो वैज्ञानिक तौर पर भी साबित हो चुका है,

thanks to the communications revolution,

और सूचना क्रान्ति के चलते,

all the tribes on the planet -- all 15,000 tribes --

इस ग्रह के सारे कबीले, लगभग १५,००० कबीले,

are in touch with each other.

एक दूसरे से संपर्क में आ गये हैं।

And it's a big family reunion.

और ये बहुत बडा पारिवारिक सम्मेलन है।

And yet, like many family reunions,

it's not all peace and light.

There's a lot of conflict,

बहुत विवाद भी उत्पन्न होते हैं।

and the question is: How do we deal with our differences?

और असली प्रश्न तो ये है, कि

हम इन विवादों से कैसे निपतें?

How do we deal with our deepest differences,

हम अपने गहरे पैठे हुए मतभेदों से कैसे निपटें,

given the human propensity for conflict

जब कि हम लोग हरदम लडने को तैयार रहते हैं

और मानव महान ज्ञाता हो गया है

and the human genius at devising weapons of enormous destruction?

हाहाकार मचा सकने वाले हथियारों का।

That's the question.

प्रश्न असल में ये है।

As I've spent the last better part of three decades, almost four,

traveling the world,

some of the most difficult conflicts on the face of the planet --

I've been asking myself that question.

और मै स्वयं से हमेशा यही प्रश्न पूछता आया हूँ।

And I think I've found, in some ways, what is the secret to peace.

कि शान्ति का राज़ क्या है।

It's actually surprisingly simple.

It's not easy, but it's simple.

It's not even new.

It may be one of our most ancient human heritages.

The secret to peace is us.

It's us who act as a surrounding community around any conflict,

ये हम सब ही हैं

who can play a constructive role.

एक सकारात्मक भागीदारी निभा सकते हैं।

Let me give you just a story, an example.

मैं उदाहरण के रूप में एक किस्सा सुनाता हूँ।

About 20 years ago,

करीब २० साल पहले, मैं दक्षिणी अफ़्रीका में था,

I was in South Africa, working with the parties in that conflict,

वहाँ के विवाद में शामिल गुटों के साथ काम करते हुए,

and I had an extra month,

और मेरे पास एक महीन का अतिरिक्त समय था,

so I spent some time living with several groups of San Bushmen.

तो मैने वो समय

I was curious about them, about the way in which they resolve conflict.

Because, after all, within living memory, they were hunters and gatherers,

So how do they deal with their differences?

Well, what I learned is, whenever tempers rise in those communities,

someone goes and hides the poison arrows out in the bush,

and then everyone sits around in a circle like this,

and they sit and they talk and they talk.

और फ़िर वो बातचीत करते जाते है, करते जाते हैं, करते जाते हैं।

It may take two days, three days, four days,

इसमें उन्हें दो दिन, तीन, या फ़िर चार दिन भी लग सकते हैं,

but they don't rest until they find a resolution

मगर वो तब तक नहीं रुकते

जब तक कि उन्हें कोई हल न मिल जाये,

or better yet -- a reconciliation.

या फ़िर, विवाद करने वाले सुलह न कर लें।

And if tempers are still too high,

और यदि तब भी गुस्सा शांत न हो,

then they send someone off to visit some relatives,

तो वो किसी को अपने रिश्तेदारों से मिलने भेज देते हैं

as a cooling-off period.

शांत होने के लिये।

Well, that system is, I think, probably the system

और मेरे ख्याल से इसी व्यवस्था

के चलते, हम सब आज तक जीवित बचे है,

that kept us alive to this point,

given our human tendencies.

हमारी लडाकू पॄवत्तियों के मद्देनज़र।

इस व्यवस्था को मैं तीसरा-पक्ष कहता हूँ।

That system, I call "the third side."

क्योंकि यदि आप ध्यान दें,

Because if you think about it, normally when we think of conflict,

अक्सर जब भी हम विवाद के बारे में सोचते हैं, या बताते हैं,

when we describe it,

there's always two sides --

तो उस में हमेशा दो पक्ष निहित होते हैं।

it's Arabs versus Israelis, labor versus management,

अरब बनाम इस्राइली, मज़दूर बनाम प्रबंधन,

husband versus wife, Republicans versus Democrats.

पति बनाम पत्नी, रिपब्लिकन बनाम डेमोक्रेट,

But what we don't often see

मगर अक्सर जो हम नज़रअंदाज़ कर देते हैं,

is that there's always a third side,

वो ये है कि हमेशा एक तीसरा पक्ष होता है।

और वो तीसरा पक्ष है आप और मैं,

and the third side of the conflict is us, it's the surrounding community,

आसपास का समाज,

it's the friends, the allies,

दोस्त, और सहयोगी,

the family members, the neighbors.

परिवार के सदस्य, पडोसी।

And we can play an incredibly constructive role.

और हम सब उसमें अभूतपूर्व सकारात्मक भूमिका निभा सकते हैं।

Perhaps the most fundamental way in which the third side can help

शायद सबसे मौलिक तरीका

is to remind the parties of what's really at stake.

For the sake of the kids, for the sake of the family,

समाज के लिये, और भविष्य के लिये,

for the sake of the community, for the sake of the future,

let's stop fighting for a moment and start talking.

हमें लडना छोड कर, बातचीत शुरु करनी होगी।

क्योंकि, मुद्दा ये है,

Because, the thing is,

when we're involved in conflict,

कि जब हम लडाई का हिस्सा होते हैं,

it's very easy to lose perspective.

तो अपना आपा खोना बहुत आसान होता है।

It's very easy to react.

तुरंत भडक उठना भी बहुत आसान होता है।

Human beings -- we're reaction machines.

और मानव-जाति तो जैसे प्रतिक्रिया की मशीन है।

And as the saying goes,

when angry, you will make the best speech

you will ever regret.

(Laughter)

And so the third side reminds us of that.

और इसलिये तीसरा पक्ष हमेशा हमें ये याद दिलाता रह सकता है।

The third side helps us go to the balcony,

ये तीसरा पक्ष हमें बालकनी में जाने में मदद करता है,

which is a metaphor for a place of perspective,

where we can keep our eyes on the prize.

Let me tell you a little story from my own negotiating experience.

मैं आपको अपने खुद के मध्यस्तता के अनुभव से एक किस्सा सुनाता हूँ।

Some years ago, I was involved as a facilitator in some very tough talks

कुछ साल पहले, मैं एक मध्यस्त के रूप में

between the leaders of Russia and the leaders of Chechnya.

There was a war going on, as you know.

And the talks got off to a rather rocky start

and said, "You should stay right here in your seats,

"आपको यहीं बैठे रहना चाहिये,

because you're going to be on trial for war crimes."

क्योंकि हो सकता है आप पर भी युद्ध-अपराधों का मुकदमा चले।"

और फ़िर वो मेरी ओर मुखातिब हो कर बोले,

And then he turned to me and said,

"You're an American.

"तुम तो अमरीकी हो।

Look at what you Americans are doing in Puerto Rico."

देखो तुम अमरीकियों ने प्यूर्टो रिको में क्या किया है।"

And my mind started racing, "Puerto Rico? What do I know about Puerto Rico?"

और मेरे दिमाग ने तुरंत सोचना शुरु किया, "प्यूर्टो रिको? इसकी बात का मैं क्या जवाब दूँ?"

मैने प्रतिक्रिया करनी शुरु कर दी थी,

I started reacting.

(Laughter)

मगर तभी मुझे बालकनी मे जाने वाली बात याद आ गयी।

But then, I tried to remember to go to the balcony.

और जब उन्होंने बोलना बंद किया,

And then when he paused

and everyone looked at me for a response,

और सभी ने मेरी ओर जवाबी प्रतिक्रिया के लिये देखा,

from a balcony perspective, I was able to thank him for his remarks

बालकनी वाली सोच के चलते, मैं उनक उल्टा धन्यवाद देने में सक्षम हो सका,

and say, "I appreciate your criticism of my country

और मैने कहा, "मैं अपने देश के प्रति आपकी आलोचना का सम्मान करता हूँ,

and I take it as a sign that we're among friends

और इसे मित्रवत व्यवहार का लक्षण मानता हूँ कि

कम से कम हम खुल कर मन की बात बोल तो रहे हैं।

and can speak candidly to one another."

(Laughter)

और आज हम यहाँ प्यूर्टो रिको या किसी और बात के लिये नहीं मिल रहे हैं।

"And what we're here to do is not to talk about Puerto Rico or the past.

हम यहाँ इसलिये हैं कि हम एक हल ढूँढ सकें जिस से कि

We're here to see if we can figure out a way

to stop the suffering and the bloodshed in Chechnya."

चेचेन्या में हो रह दुख और खून-खराबा बंद हो सके।"

बातचीत फ़िर से राह पर आ गयी।

The conversation got back on track.

That's the role of the third side,

तीसरे पक्ष का यही काम होता है,

to help the parties go to the balcony.

कि वो विवाद में फ़ंसे पक्षों को बालकनी तक जाने में मदद करें।

चलिये मैं आपको ले चलता हूँ

Now let me take you, for a moment,

to what's widely regarded as the world's most difficult conflict,

विश्व के सबसे कठिन माने जाने वाली बहस के,

या शायद वास्तव में सबसे कठिन बहस के, ठीक बीच

or the most impossible conflict, the Middle East.

मध्य-पूर्व में।

Question is: where's the third side there?

प्रश्न है: यहाँ तीसरा पक्ष कहाँ है?

How could we possibly go to the balcony?

यहाँ हम बालकनी में जाने की बात कैसे सोच सकेंगे?

Now, I don't pretend to have an answer to the Middle East conflict,

अब मैं ये नाटक नहीं करूँगा कि

मेरे पास मध्य-पूर्व समस्या का समाधान है,

but I think I've got a first step -- literally, a first step --

पर मेरे ख्याल से मेरे पास समाधान की ओर जाने का पहला कदम है,

something that any one of us could do as third-siders.

Let me just ask you one question first.

How many of you in the last years

have ever found yourself worrying about the Middle East

and wondering what anyone could do?

Just out of curiosity, how many of you?

OK, so the great majority of us.

And here, it's so far away.

Why do we pay so much attention to this conflict?

Is it the number of deaths?

There are a hundred times more people who die in a conflict in Africa

इस के कई सौ गुना लोग मरते हैं

than in the Middle East.

No, it's because of the story,

नहीं, ये इस से जुडी कहानी की वजह से है,

because we feel personally involved in that story.

कि हम सब व्यक्तिगत तौर पर जुडे महसूस करते हैं

इस कहानी से।

Whether we're Christians, Muslims or Jews, religious or non-religious,

चाहे हम ईसाई हों, मुसलमान हों, या फ़िर यहूदी,

और आस्तिक हों या नास्तिक,

we feel we have a personal stake in it.

हमें लगता है कि हमारा कुछ हिस्सा इसमें शामिल है।

Stories matter;

as an anthropologist, I know that.

Stories are what we use to transmit knowledge.

They give meaning to our lives.

That's what we tell here at TED, we tell stories.

इसलिये ही हम सब यहाँ टेड में हैं, कहानियाँ सुनाने।

कहानियाँ सबसे महत्वपूर्ण हैं।

Stories are the key.

And so my question is --

और मेरा प्रश्न है,

yes, let's try and resolve the politics there in the Middle East,

हाँ, चलिये कोशिश करके सुलझाते हैं राजनीतिक उलझन

जो मध्य-पूर्व में है,

but let's also take a look at the story.

Let's try to get at the root of what it's all about.

Let's see if we can apply the third side to it.

What would that mean? What is the story there?

Now, as anthropologists, we know that every culture has an origin story.

हर संस्कृति के उद्गम की एक कहानी होती है।

What's the origin story of the Middle East?

मध्य-पूर्व के उद्गम की कहानी क्या है?

In a phrase, it's:

सीधे सीधे, कहानी ये है:

Four thousand years ago,

४००० साल पहले, एक आदमी और उसके परिवार

a man and his family walked across the Middle East,

ने मध्य-पूर्व के आरपार पद-यात्रा की

and the world has never been the same since.

और दुनिया हमेशा हमेशा के बदल गयी।

और वो आदमी, जैसा कि सर्वविदित है,

That man, of course, was Abraham.

अब्राहम था।

And what he stood for was unity, the unity of the family;

और वो एकता का पुजारी थी,

उसके परिवार की एकता।

he's the father of us all.

वो हम सब का पिता था।

But it's not just what he stood for, it's what his message was.

मगर मसला सिर्फ़ ये नहीं कि वो क्या पूजता था, बल्कि ये कि उसका संदेश क्या था।

His basic message was unity too,

the interconnectedness of it all, the unity of it all.

And his basic value was respect,

was kindness toward strangers.

और अन्जान लोगों के प्रति दया का भाव।

That's what he's known for, his hospitality.

वो इसिलिये जाना जाता है, अपनी सत्कार भावना के लिये।

तो इस लिहाज से,

So in that sense,

he's the symbolic third side of the Middle East.

वो तीसरे पक्ष का प्रतीक है

मध्य-पूर्व के लिये।

He's the one who reminds us that we're all part of a greater whole.

वो हमें ये याद दिलाता है कि

हम सब एक बडी परिकल्पना के हिस्से मात्र हैं।

Now, think about that for a moment.

तो आप कैसे --

थोडा रुक कर सोचिये।

Today, we face the scourge of terrorism.

आज हम आतंकवाद का बोझा ढो रहे हैं।

What is terrorism?

आतंकवाद आखिर है क्या?

Terrorism is basically taking an innocent stranger

आतंकवाद है कि एक मासूम अजनबी को पकडिये,

and treating them as an enemy whom you kill in order to create fear.

और उसे उस दुश्मन के माफ़िक मानिये जिसे आप मार देंगे

डर पैदा करने के लिये।

What's the opposite of terrorism?

और आतंकवाद का विपरीत क्या है?

ये कि आप एक मासूम अजनबी से मिले,

It's taking an innocent stranger

and treating them as a friend whom you welcome into your home,

और उससे उस दोस्त के माफ़िक बर्ताव किया,

जिसे आप अपने घर बुलायेंगे

in order to sow and create understanding

उस के साथ दख-सुख बाँटेंगे, और समझ बढायेंगे,

सम्मान देंगे, प्यार देंगे।

or respect, or love.

So what if, then, you took the story of Abraham,

तो अगर ऐसा हो कि

आप अब्राहम की कहानी उठायें,

which is a third-side story,

जो कि तीसरे पक्ष की कहानी है,

what if that could be --

और अगर उसे ऐसा कर दें --

because Abraham stands for hospitality --

क्योंकि अब्राहम सत्कार भावना का प्रतीक है --

what if that could be an antidote to terrorism?

क्या हो अगर ये आतंकवाद के खिलाफ़ एक दवाई हो जाये?

What if that could be a vaccine against religious intolerance?

क्या हो अगर ये कहानी टीका बन जाये

मजहबी असहिष्णुता के खिलाफ़?

How would you bring that story to life?

आप उस कहानी में जीवन कैसे फ़ूँक सकेंगे?

Now, it's not enough just to tell a story.

देखिये सिर्फ़ कहानी सुना भर देना काफ़ी नहीं है --

वो काफ़ी शक्तिशाली है --

That's powerful, but people need to experience the story.

मगर लोगों को कहानी को अनुभव कर पाना ज़रूरी है।

They need to be able to live the story.

उन्हें उस कहानी को जी पाना ज़रूरी है। वो आप कैसे करेंगे?

How would you do that?

And that was my thinking of how would you do that.

और ये मेरी सोच थी कि ऐसा कैसे होगा।

And that's what comes to the first step here.

और यहीं से पहले कदम की शुरुवात है।

Because the simple way to do that is:

क्योंकि एक साधारण तरीका ये कर पाने का है कि

आप पद-यात्रा के लिये निकल पडें।

you go for a walk.

You go for a walk in the footsteps of Abraham.

आप अब्राहम के पदचापों का अनुसरण करते हुये पदयात्रा पर निकलें

You retrace the footsteps of Abraham.

आप अब्राहम के रास्ते चलें।

Because walking has a real power.

क्योंकि पदयात्रा में बडी ताकत होती है।

You know, as an anthropologist, walking is what made us human.

मैं, एक मानव-विज्ञानी होने के नाते, जानता हूँ कि पद-यात्राओं ने ही हमें मनुष्य बनाया है।

It's funny -- when you walk, you walk side-by-side,

ये गजब है कि जब आप चलते हैं,

तो आप अगल-बगल चलते हैं

in the same common direction.

एक ही दिशा में।

Now if I were to come to you face-to-face

और अगर मै आपके सामने से आऊँ

and come this close to you,

और इतना करीब आ जाऊँ,

you would feel threatened.

तो आपको भय महसूस होगा।

But if I walk shoulder-to-shoulder,

लेकिन अगर मैं आपके कंधे से कंधा मिला कर चलूँ,

चाहे आपको बिल्कुल छूते हुये भी,

even touching shoulders,

it's no problem.

तो कोई समस्या नहीं है।

Who fights while they walk?

अगल बगल चलते समय आखिर कौन लडता है?

That's why in negotiations, often, when things get tough,

इसिलिये, जब मसले हल करते समय, स्थिति कठिन हो जाती है,

people go for walks in the woods.

लोग जंगलों में पद-यात्रा के लिये निकल जाते हैं।

So the idea came to me of, what about inspiring a path,

तो मुझे ये विचार आया कि

क्यों न मैं प्रेरित करूँ

ऐसा रास्ता --

a route -- think the Silk Route, think the Appalachian Trail --

सिल्क रूट जैसा, या अप्लेशियन रास्ते के जैसा --

that followed in the footsteps of Abraham?

जो कि ठीक वो ही हो

जो अब्राहम ने लिया था।

लोगों ने कहा, "ये पागलपन है। नहीं हो सकता।

People said, "That's crazy. You can't.

You can't retrace the footsteps of Abraham -- it's too insecure,

तुम अब्राहम के रास्ते पर नहीं चल सकते। ये बहुत खतरनाक है।

you've got to cross all these borders,

आपको तमाम सारी सीमाओं को पार करना होगा।

it goes across 10 different countries in the Middle East,

ये मध्य-पूर्व के करीब दस अलग अलग देशों से गुज़रता है,

क्योंकि ये उन सब को जोडता है।"

because it unites them all."

तो हमने हार्वार्ड में इस विचार पर अध्ययन किया।

And so we studied the idea at Harvard.

बारीकी से इसे समझा।

We did our due diligence.

And then a few years ago,

और फ़िर कुछ साल पहले, हम ने एक दल बना कर,

a group of us, about 25 of us from 10 different countries,

करीब १० देशों के २५ लोगों का,

decided to see if we could retrace the footsteps of Abraham,

ये देखने का फ़ैसला किया कि क्या हम अब्राहम के रास्ते पर चल पायेंगे,

उनके जन्मस्थान उर्फ़ा शहर से शुरु कर,

going from his initial birthplace in the city of Urfa

जो दक्षिणी तुर्की, उत्तरी मेसोपोटामिया में है।

in Southern Turkey, Northern Mesopotamia.

And we then took a bus and took some walks

तो हमने एक बस ली और थोडी पैदल यात्रा के उपरांत

and went to Harran, where, in the Bible, he sets off on his journey.

हम हर्रान पहुँचे,

जहाँ से, बाइबिल के अनुसार, उन्होंने अपनी यात्रा शुरु की थी।

Then we crossed the border into Syria, went to Aleppo,

फ़िर हमने सीमा पार की और सीरिया गये, फ़िर अलेप्पो,

which, turns out, is named after Abraham.

जिसका नाम अब्राहम पर ही पडा है।

We went to Damascus,

हम दमसकस गये,

which has a long history associated with Abraham.

जिसका इतिहास अब्राहम से जुडा है।

फ़िर हम उत्तरी जोर्डन गये,

We then came to Northern Jordan,

to Jerusalem -- which is all about Abraham -- to Bethlehem,

येरुसलम गये,

जो कि पूरी तरह से अब्राहम से बारे में है, फ़िर बेतलेहम,

and finally, to the place where he's buried, in Hebron.

और फ़िर आखिर में वहाँ जहाँ वो दफ़न हैं,

हब्रोन में।

So effectively, we went from womb to tomb.

तो हम लगभग गर्भाशय से कब्र तक गये।

We showed it could be done.

हमने ये दिखाया कि ऐसा हो सकता है। ये बहुत ही गजब की यात्रा थी।

It was an amazing journey.

Let me ask you a question.

आपसे एक प्रश्न पूछता हूँ।

How many of you have had the experience of being in a strange neighborhood

आप में से कितनों को ऐसा अनुभव हुआ है

कि किसी अजनबी जगह में,

or strange land,

या अजनबी देश में,

and a total stranger, perfect stranger,

पूरी तरह से, सौ प्रतिशत अनजान व्यक्ति,

आप तक आये और आपसे प्यार की दो बात करे,

comes up to you and shows you some kindness --

maybe invites you into their home, gives you a drink,

आपको अपने घर बुलाये, कुछ खातिरदारी करे,

कॉफ़ी पिलाये, या फ़िर खाने का निमंत्रण दे?

gives you a coffee, gives you a meal?

आप में से कितनों के साथ ऐसा हुआ है?

How many of you have ever had that experience?

देखिये यही है मुद्दे की बात,

That's the essence of the Abraham Path.

जो अब्राहम-पथ में निहित है।

That's what you discover as you go into these villages in the Middle East

क्योंकि आप यही होता पाते है, जब आप मध्य-पूर्व के इन गाँवों मे जाते हैं

जहाँ आप बुरे बर्ताव की आशा रखते हैं,

where you expect hostility,

और आपको आश्चर्यजनक स्वागत मिलता है,

and you get the most amazing hospitality,

और सब अब्राहम से जुडे होने से।

all associated with Abraham:

अब्राहम के नाम पर,

"In the name of Father Ibrahim, let me offer you some food."

"आइये मैं आपको कुछ खाने को देता हूँ।"

So what we discovered

तो हमें ये पता लगा कि

is that Abraham is not just a figure out of a book for those people;

अब्राहम महज एक किताबी किरदार नहीं है इन लोगों के लिये,

he's alive, he's a living presence.

वो जीवित है, उनके बीच रोज़ाना।

And to make a long story short,

और संक्षेप में कहूँ,

in the last couple of years now,

तो पिछले कुछ सालों में,

thousands of people have begun to walk parts of the path of Abraham

हज़ारों लोगों ने

अब्राहम-पथ के कुछ भागों पर

मध्य-पूर्व में चलना शुरु कर दिया है,

in the Middle East,

enjoying the hospitality of the people there.

वहाँ के लोगों का स्वागत-सत्कार स्वीकार करते हुए।

They've begun to walk in Israel and Palestine,

उन्होने चलना शुरु किया है

इज़रायल और फ़िलिस्तीन में,

in Jordan, in Turkey, in Syria.

जोर्डन में, तुर्की में, सीरिया में।

ये बेहद अलग अनुभव है।

It's an amazing experience.

Men, women, young people, old people --

आदमी, औरत, युवा, वृद्ध --

more women than men, actually, interestingly.

आदमियों से ज्यादा औरतें, सच में।

For those who can't walk,

और जो चल नहीं सकते,

who are unable to get there right now,

जो वहाँ अभी तक नहीं जा सकते,

people started to organize walks in cities, in their own communities.

उन लोगों ने पद-यात्राएँ आयोजित करना शुरु कर दिया है

अपने शहरों, और अपने ही देशों मे।

In Cincinnati, for instance, they organized a walk

सिनसिनाती में, उदाहरण के लिये, एक पद-यात्रा आयोजित होती है

एक चर्च से एक मस्जिद से होते हुए, एक यहूदी मंदिर तक

from a church to a mosque to a synagogue and all had an Abrahamic meal together.

और फ़िर सब साथ में अब्राहम-भोज करते है।

It was Abraham Path Day.

उसे अब्राहम पथ दिवस कहा जाता है।

In São Paulo, Brazil, it's become an annual event

साओ पालो, ब्राज़ील में तो ये वार्षिक उत्सव बन चुका है,

for thousands of people to run in a virtual Abraham Path Run,

हज़ारों लोगों के दौडने के लिये,

एक कल्पित अब्राहम पथ पर,

uniting the different communities.

अलग अलग समुदायों को जोडने के लिये।

The media love it; they really adore it.

मीडिया भी इस पर खूब लिखती है, उन्हें ये बेहद पसंद है।

They lavish attention on it because it's visual

वो अपना ध्यान इस पर लुटाते है

क्योंकि ये देखने में बेहतरीन है,

and it spreads the idea,

और इस विचार को आगे बढाता है,

this idea of Abrahamic hospitality, of kindness towards strangers.

कि अब्राहम की तरह ही स्वागत

और दया की भावना अजनबियों के प्रति रखी जाये।

And just a couple weeks ago, there was an NPR story on it.

और अभी कुछ हफ़्ते पहले ही,

एन.पी.आर ने इस पर कहानी लिखी थी।

Last month,

पिछले महीने,

there was a piece in the Manchester Guardian about it,

इस पर गार्डियन अखबार ने लिखा था,

मैनचेस्टर से निकलने वाले गार्डियन ने --

two whole pages.

पूरे दो पन्नों की रपट।

And they quoted a villager

और उन्होंने एक ग्रामीण का संदेश भी शामिल किया था

who said, "This walk connects us to the world."

जिसने कहा, "ये पद-यात्रा हमें दुनिया से जोडती है।"

He said, "It was like a light that went on in our lives --

उसने कहा कि ये एक रोशनी की तरह है जो हमारे जीवन में उजाला करती है

it brought us hope."

हमें आशा दे कर।

And so that's what it's about.

और देखिये इसी सब पर ये आधारित है।

But it's not just about psychology;

मगर ये सिर्फ़ मनोवैज्ञानिक नहीं है,

it's about economics.

ये आर्थिक भी है,

Because as people walk, they spend money.

क्योंकि जब लोग चलते है, तो वो पैसे भी खर्च करते हैं।

And this woman right here, Um Ahmad,

और उम अहमद नाम की इस महिला,

is a woman who lives on the path in Northern Jordan.

जो कि उत्तरी जोर्डन में इस रास्ते पर ही रहती है।

She's desperately poor.

ये बेहद गरीब है।

She's partially blind, her husband can't work,

काफ़ी हद तक दृष्टि-विहीन है, उसका पति काम नहीं कर सकता है,

she's got seven kids.

और उस के सात बच्चे हैं।

But what she can do is cook.

मगर वो एक काम कर सकती है - खाना पकाना।

And so she's begun to cook for some groups of walkers

तो उसने पद-यात्रियों के दलों के लिये खाना पकाना शुरु कर दिया है,

who come through the village and have a meal in her home.

जो उसके गाँव से निकलते है, और उसके घर में खाना खाते हैं।

वो ज़मीन पर बैठते है।

They sit on the floor -- she doesn't even have a tablecloth.

उस के पास मेज़ ढकने का कपडा तक नहीं है।

She makes the most delicious food,

और वो बहुत ही स्वादिष्ट खाना पकाती है

that's fresh from the herbs in the surrounding countryside.

जो कि आसपास के खेतों में उगने वाले मसालों से बना होता है।

And so more and more walkers have come,

और इस वजह से और भी पद-यात्री वहाँ आते हैं।

and lately she's begun to earn an income to support her family.

और अब तो उसने पैसे कमाने भी शुरु कर दिये है,

अपने परिवार के सहारे के लिये।

And so she told our team there, she said,

और उसने वहाँ हमारी टीम को बताया,

"You have made me visible

"आपने मुझे उस गाँव में इज़्ज़्त दिलायी है

in a village where people were once ashamed to look at me."

जहाँ एक समय पर लोग

मेरी तरफ़ देखने में भी झिझकते थे।"

ये है अब्राहम-पथ की शक्ति।

That's the potential of the Abraham Path.

There are literally hundreds of those kinds of communities

और ऐसे कई सौ समुदाय है

पूरे मध्य-पूर्व में , इस रास्ते के आसपास।

across the Middle East, across the path.

The potential is basically to change the game.

देखिये इसमें संभावना है पूरा मुद्दा बदल देने की

And to change the game, you have to change the frame, the way we see things --

और मुद्दा बदलने के लिये आपको माहौल बदलना होगा,

जिस तरह हम देखते हैं--

to change the frame from hostility to hospitality,

माहौल बदलना होगा

दुश्मनी से दोस्ती में

from terrorism to tourism.

आतंकवाद से पर्यटन में।

And in that sense, the Abraham Path

और उस हिसाब से, अब्राहम पथ

मुद्दा बदलने की संभावना से ओत-प्रोत है।

is a game-changer.

चलिये मैं आपको कुछ दिखाता हूँ।

Let me just show you one thing.

I have a little acorn here

मेरे पास एक छोटा सा बाँजफ़ल है

that I picked up while I was walking on the path earlier this year.

जो मैनें ऐसे ही रास्ते पर चलते हुए उठा लिया था

इस साल की शुरुवात में।

Now, the acorn is associated with the oak tree, of course --

अब ये फ़ल बलूत के पेड से जुडा है, बिलकुल --

क्योंके ये उस पर उगता है,

grows into an oak tree, which is associated with Abraham.

जो कि अब्राहम से जुडा है।

The path right now is like an acorn;

ये पथ आज इस फ़ल की तरह है;

it's still in its early phase.

अपने शुरुवाती दौर में।

What would the oak tree look like?

और बलूत का पूरा पेड कैसा दिखेगा?

When I think back to my childhood,

जब मैं अपने बचपन के बारे में सोचता हूँ,

a good part of which I spent, after being born here in Chicago,

जिसका काफ़ी बडा हिस्सा मैने, शिकागो में पैदा होने के बावजूद,

यूरोप में गुज़ारा।

I spent in Europe.

अगर आप

If you had been in the ruins of, say, London in 1945, or Berlin,

मान लीजिये, कि लंदन के खंडहरों

में १९४५ मे, या फ़िर बर्लिन मे, गये होते,

and you had said,

तो आपने कहा होता,

"Sixty years from now,

आज से साठ साल बाद,

this is going to be the most peaceful, prosperous part of the planet,"

ये धरती का सबसे शांत, सबसे धनी इलाका होगा,"

तो लोग सोचते कि

people would have thought you were certifiably insane.

आप निश्चय ही पागल हैं।

But they did it, thanks to a common identity, Europe,

मगर ऐसा हुआ - यूरोप की एक साझी पहचान के चलते,

and a common economy.

और एक साझी अर्थव्यवस्था के चलते।

So my question is, if it can be done in Europe,

तो मेरा प्रश्न है, कि यदि ये यूरोप में किया जा सकता है,

why not in the Middle East?

तो मध्य-पूर्व में क्यों नहीं?

Why not, thanks to a common identity, which is the story of Abraham,

क्यों नहीं, जबकि वहाँ भी एक साझी पहचान है --

जो कि अब्राहम की कहानी से आती है --

and thanks to a common economy that would be based, in good part, on tourism?

और ऐसी साझी अर्थव्यवस्था से

जो कि पर्यटन पर टिकी हो?

So let me conclude, then,

मैं अंत में यही कहूँगा कि

by saying that in the last 35 years,

पिछले ३५ सालों में,

मैने काम किया है

as I've worked in some of the most dangerous,

कुछ बहुत ही खतरनाक, कठिन और उलझे हुए विवादों

difficult and intractable conflicts around the planet,

- पूरे विश्व में,

I have yet to see one conflict that I felt could not be transformed.

और आज तक मैं ऐसे विवाद को नहीं देख सका

जिसे देख कर मुझे लगा हो कि ये हल नहीं हो पायेगा।

It's not easy, of course.

बिलकुल, ये आसान नहीं है,

But it's possible.

लेकिन ये संभव है।

It was done in South Africa.

ऐसा दक्षिणी अफ़्रीका में किया गया है।

It was done in Northern Ireland.

उत्तरी आयरलैण्ड में भी किया गया है।

It could be done anywhere.

और ऐसा कहीं भी किया जा सकता है।

It simply depends on us.

सब कुछ हम पर ही निर्भर करता है।

It depends on us taking the third side.

हमारा ही कर्तव्य है कि हम तीसरा पक्ष बनें।

तो मैं आप को आमंत्रित करता हूँ कि

So let me invite you to consider taking the third side,

तीसरे पक्ष की भूमिका निभाने को

even as a very small step.

एक छोटी शुरुवात के रूप में देखें।

We're about to take a break in a moment.

थोडी ही देर में हम एक छोटा सा मध्यांतर लेंगे।

Just go up to someone

उस में किसी ऐसे से मिलिये

who's from a different culture, a different country,

जो दूसरी संस्कृति, दूसरे देश से हो,

a different ethnicity -- some difference --

अलग जाति से हो, कुछ अलग हो,

and engage them in a conversation.

और उनके साथ बातचीत कीजिये; उन्हें ध्यान से सुनिये।

Listen to them.

That's a third-side act.

यही तीसरे पक्ष का कार्य है।

That's walking Abraham's Path.

यही अब्राहम के नक्श-ए-कदम पर चलना है।

After a TED Talk,

So let me just leave you with three things.

तीन संदेश दे कर जाऊँगा।

एक, ये कि शांति का राज़ है

One is, the secret to peace is the third side.

तीसरा पक्ष।

The third side is us.

और तीसरा पक्ष मै आप,

हम में हर एक है,

Each of us, with a single step,

और एक छोटे से कदम से ही,

can take the world, can bring the world

हम दुनिया को बदल सकते है, उसे

a step closer to peace.

शांति के और करीब ला सकते हैं।

There's an old African proverb that goes:

एक पुरानी अफ़्रीकन कहावत है:

"When spiderwebs unite,

"अगर मकडियों के जाले एकजुट हो जायें,

they can halt even the lion."

तो वो शेर को भी रोक सकते हैं।"

If we're able to unite our third-side webs of peace,

अगर हम सब एकत्र कर सकें,

अपने तीसरे पक्ष के जाले,

तो हम युद्ध के शेर को भी रोक सकते हैं।

we can even halt the lion of war.
