Today I'm going to talk about work.

आज मैं काम के बारे में बात करने वाला हूँ|

And the question I want to ask and answer is this:

और जो प्रश्न में पूछना चाहता हूँ और उत्तर ये है:

"Why do we work?"

"हम क्यों काम करते हैं?"

Why do we drag ourselves out of bed every morning

क्यों हम अपने आपको बिस्तर से खींच कर बाहर ले आते हर सुबह बजाय

instead of living our lives

हमारे जीवन जीने की

just filled with bouncing from one TED-like adventure to another?

जो TED-जैसा एक साहस से दूसरा तक उछल से भरा हो?

You may be asking yourselves that very question.

आप अपने आप को ये हीं प्रश्न पूछ्ते होंगे|

Now, I know of course, we have to make a living,

अभी, मुझे मालूम है बेशक हमें जीना हैं, लेकिन,

but nobody in this room thinks that that's the answer to the question,

इस कमरे में जो भी उपस्थित है,कोई ये नहीं मानते कि ये हीं इस प्रश्न का उत्तर है,

"Why do we work?"

For folks in this room, the work we do is challenging,

उनलोगों के सामने जो इस कमरे में है, हम जो काम करते हैँ वो चुनौतीपूर्ण है,

it's engaging, it's stimulating, it's meaningful.

वो मनोहर है,वो उत्तेजक है, और वो सार्थक है|

And if we're lucky, it might even be important.

हम अगर भाग्यशाली होते तो ये काम आवश्यक भी हो सकता है|

So, we wouldn't work if we didn't get paid,

इसलिए, भुगतान न पाने से हम काम नहीं करते,

but that's not why we do what we do.

लेकिन, हम जो करते है उसका वजह ये नहीं हो सकता|

And in general,

और सामान्य रूप से,

I think we think that material rewards are a pretty bad reason

for doing the work that we do.

When we say of somebody that he's "in it for the money,"

we are not just being descriptive.

Now, I think this is totally obvious,

but the very obviousness of it raises what is for me

an incredibly profound question.

Why, if this is so obvious,

why is it that for the overwhelming majority of people on the planet,

the work they do has none of the characteristics

उसमे कोई भी ऐसे विशेषताओं नही हैँ

that get us up and out of bed and off to the office every morning?

जो उन को बिस्तर से उठाके हर सुबह आफीस भेज दे?

How is it that we allow the majority of people on the planet

ऐसा क्या है कि हम इस दुनिया के अधिक संख्या के लोगों को

to do work that is monotonous, meaningless and soul-deadening?

काम करने की जो नीरस,अर्थहीन,और आत्मा-शामक है,अनुमती देते हैँ?

Why is it that as capitalism developed,

ऐसा क्योँ है कि जैसे सम्पत्तिवाद विकसित की है,

it created a mode of production, of goods and services,

यह वस्तुओं और सेवाओं की, उत्पादन की एक विधा बनाया

in which all the nonmaterial satisfactions that might come from work were eliminated?

जिस मेँ अभौतिक संतुश्टीकरण जो काम से आ सकते थे हटा दिये गये?

Workers who do this kind of work,

श्रमिकों जो इस तरह के काम करते हैँ,

whether they do it in factories, in call centers,

यदि ओ काम करते होँ, कारखानोँ मे, या काल सेंटर्स मे,

or in fulfillment warehouses,

या फिर पूर्ति गोदामों मे,

do it for pay.

वेतन के लिये करते हैँ

There is certainly no other earthly reason to do what they do except for pay.

उन लोग जो काम कर रहे हैँ उसके लिये ऐसा कोई सांसारिक कारण नही है सिवाय वेतन के|

So the question is, "Why?"

तो सवाल ये है कि,"क्योँ?"

And here's the answer:

और जवाब इधर है:

the answer is technology.

जवाब है प्रौद्योगिकी

Now, I know, I know --

अब, मै जानता हू,

yeah, yeah, yeah, technology, automation screws people, blah blah --

मै जानता हूँ -- ,हाँ,हाँ,हाँ,प्रौद्योगिकि, स्वचालन,शिकंजा लोग,ब्ला,ब्ला--

that's not what I mean.

मेरा मतलब वो नहीं था|

I'm not talking about the kind of technology

मै उस तरह की प्रौद्योगिकि के बारे मे बात नही कर रहा हू जो

that has enveloped our lives, and that people come to TED to hear about.

हमारे जिंद्गियोँ पर छागयी,और जिस के बारे मे सुनने केलिये लोग TED के लिये आते

I'm not talking about the technology of things,

मै चीजोँ के प्रौद्योगिकि के बारे मे बात नही कर रहा हूँ

profound though that is.

वह हालाँकि गहरा है|

I'm talking about another technology.

मै अन्य तकनीक के बारे मे बात कर रहा हूँ|

I'm talking about the technology of ideas.

मै विचारों की तकनीक के बारे मे बात कररहा हूँ|

I call it, "idea technology" --

मै उसको "विचारोँ की तकनीक"बुलाऊंगा--

how clever of me.

मै कितना चतुर हूँ|

In addition to creating things, science creates ideas.

चीजोँ को बनाने के साथ, शास्त्र विचारोँ को भी बनाती है|

Science creates ways of understanding.

शास्त्र समझ्ने के रा स्ते बनाती है|

And in the social sciences,

और सामाजिक विज्ञान मे

the ways of understanding that get created are ways of understanding ourselves.

जो समझने के तरीके बना दिये गये हैँ वो खुद को समझने के तरीके हैं।

And they have an enormous influence on how we think, what we aspire to,

और उनका हम कैसे सोचते हैँ, हमारी ख्वाहिश,

and how we act.

और हम कैसे काम करते हैँ|

If you think your poverty is God's will, you pray.

अगर तुम सोचते हो किअपनी गरीबी भगवान के चाह तो तुम प्रार्थना करोगे|

If you think your poverty is the result of your own inadequacy,

अगर तुम सोचते हो कि गरिबि तुम्हारी खुद की असमर्थता है,

you shrink into despair.

तुम निराशा में हटोगे|

And if you think your poverty is the result of oppression and domination,

और अगर आप सोचते है कि उत्पीड़न और वर्चस्व गरीबी की एक परीणाम है,

then you rise up in revolt.

तो आप विद्रोह के लिये उठेंगे|

Whether your response to poverty is resignation or revolution,

चाहे आपका गरीबी केलिये प्रतिक्रिया इस्तीफे हो या क्रांति,

depends on how you understand the sources of your poverty.

तुम अपना गरीबी का सूत्रोँ को समझने पर निर्भर करता है|

This is the role that ideas play in shaping us as human beings,

ये भूमिका विचार निभाते हैँ लोगोँ को मनुष्य के रूप में हमें आकार देने मे,

and this is why idea technology may be the most profoundly important technology

और इसीलिये विचार तकनीकि सबसे गहराई से महत्वपूर्ण तकनीकि है

that science gives us.

जो विज्ञान ने हमे दिया है|

And there's something special about idea technology,

और विचार तकनीकि में कुछ खास है,

that makes it different from the technology of things.

जो उसको चीजोँ की तकनीकि से अलग बनाता है|

With things, if the technology sucks,

चीजोँ के साथ, अगर तकनीकि चूस लिया,

it just vanishes, right?

वो गायब हो जाता है,है ना?

Bad technology disappears.

प्रौद्योगिकी गायब हो जाता है।

With ideas --

योजनाओँ के साथ--

false ideas about human beings will not go away

लोगोँ के बारे मे जो गलत विचार है वो दूर नहीं जायेंगे

if people believe that they're true.

अगर लोग उसे सच मानने लगेंगे|

Because if people believe that they're true,

क्योँकि अगर लोग मानने लगेंगे कि ओ सच हैँ,

they create ways of living and institutions

वो रहन सहन के तरीके और सँस्थानोँ को ऐसे बनायेंगे

that are consistent with these very false ideas.

जो संगत करेंगे झूठी विचारोँ के साथ |

And that's how the industrial revolution created a factory system

और लगता है औद्योगिक क्रांति ऐसे कारखाना व्यवस्था शुरू किया

in which there was really nothing you could possibly get out of your day's work,

जिसमे आपको वास्तव मे आपके काम से संभवतः कुछ नही मिलनेवाला है,

except for the pay at the end of the day.

बजाय वेतन के जो दिन के अंत मे मिलेगा|

Because the father -- one of the fathers

क्योँकि पिता--पिता मेँ से एक

of the Industrial Revolution, Adam Smith --

औद्योगिक कि,आडम स्मित--

was convinced that human beings were by their very natures lazy,

यकीन करते थे कि मनुष्य अपने स्वभाव से आलसी हैँ,

and wouldn't do anything unless you made it worth their while,

और ऐसा कुछ नही करेंगे जब तक आप उनके समय को लायक नही बनाते,

and the way you made it worth their while

और आप उनके समय को लायक

was by incentivizing, by giving them rewards.

प्रोत्साहित,द्वारा उन्हे पुरस्कार देकर करेंगे|

That was the only reason anyone ever did anything.

वो एक ही कारण है कोई भी व्यक्ती काम करने की|

So we created a factory system consistent with that false view of human nature.

इसीलिये हमने एक कारखाना व्यवस्था जो गलत नजर के साथ संगत है|

But once that system of production was in place,

पर एक बार वो उत्पादन की व्यवस्था अपनी जगह में था ,

there was really no other way for people to operate,

कोई अन्य तरीका वास्तव में नहीं था लोगों को संचालित करने के लिए,

except in a way that was consistent with Adam Smith's vision.

बजाय इसके जो संगत है आडम स्मित के द्रुश्टि के साथ|

So the work example is merely an example

तो ये काम का उदाहरण तो सिर्फ एक उदाहरण है

of how false ideas can create a circumstance

कि कैसे झूठे विचार बना सकते हैँ एक परिस्थिति

that ends up making them true.

जो समाप्त होता है उन्हे सच बनाकर|

It is not true

ये सच नहीं है

that you "just can't get good help anymore."

कि आपको"बस अबअच्छी मदद नही मिल सकता|"

It is true

ये सच है

that you "can't get good help anymore"

कि आप को"अब और अच्छी मदद नही मिल सकता"

when you give people work to do that is demeaning and soulless.

जब आप लोगोँ को काम देते हो करने के लिये जो नीचा दिखा निष्प्राण हो|

And interestingly enough, Adam Smith --

और काफी दिलचस्प है, एडम स्मिथ -

the same guy who gave us this incredible invention

वो ही शक्स जो हमे दिया है ये अविश्वसनीय आविष्कार

of mass production, and division of labor

बड़े पैमाने पर उत्पादन, और श्रम विभाजन के

-- understood this.

--ने यह समझ लिया|

He said, of people who worked in assembly lines,

उन्होँने कहा,लोग जो काम करते हैँ समनुक्रम मेँ,

of men who worked in assembly lines, he says:

पुरुष जो काम करते है समनुक्रम मेँ,वो कहाँ:

"He generally becomes as stupid as it is possible for a human being to become."

"ओ आमतौर पर बेवकूफ बनजाता है जो सँभव है एक इनसान को बनने के लिये|"

Now, notice the word here is "become."

अब,ध्यान देनेवाले शब्द "बनना"|

"He generally becomes as stupid as it is possible for a human being to become."

"वो आमतौर पर बेवकूफ बनजाता है जो सँभव है एक इनसान को बनने के लिये"|

Whether he intended it or not, what Adam Smith was telling us there,

चाहे उनके इरादा है या नही, आडम स्मिथ क्या बता रहा था हमसे वहाँ,

is that the very shape of the institution within which people work

कि सँस्था का आकार जिसमेँ लोग काम करते हैँ

creates people who are fitted to the demands of that institution

लोगोँ को ऐसा बनाता है जो उस सँस्था की मांग मेँ लगे हैँ

and deprives people of the opportunity

और लोगोँ को मौकोँ से वंचित करता है

to derive the kinds of satisfactions from their work that we take for granted.

उनको काम से जो संतुष्टि मिलती है जो हम बिना प्रमाण मान लेते हैँ|

The thing about science -- natural science --

शास्त्र के बारे मे बात-- प्राक्रुतिक शास्त्र--

is that we can spin fantastic theories about the cosmos,

ये है कि हम ब्र्ह्मांडोँ के बारे मेँ अद्भुत सिद्धंतोँ के जाला बून सकते हैँ,

and have complete confidence

और पूरी आत्मविस्वास रख सकते हैँ

that the cosmos is completely indifferent to our theories.

कि ये ब्र्ह्मांड पूरी तरह से हमारे सिद्धंतोँ के प्रति उदासीन है|

It's going to work the same damn way

वो इसी तरह काम करते रहेगा

no matter what theories we have about the cosmos.

कोईबात नही क्या सिद्धांत ब्र्ह्मांड केबारे मेँ हमारे पास हैँ|

But we do have to worry about the theories we have of human nature,

लेकिन हमेँ चिंतित होने की जरूरत है जो सिद्धांत मानव स्व्भाव के बारे मे हैँ,

because human nature will be changed by the theories we have

क्योँकि मानव स्वभाव बदल जायेगा हमारे पास सिद्धांतोँ से

that are designed to explain and help us understand human beings.

जिसको मनुष्य को समझाने और समझाने मे मदद करने के लिये रूपांकित किया गया|

The distinguished anthropologist, Clifford Geertz, said, years ago,

प्रतिष्टित मानवविज्ञानी, क्लिफर्ड गीर्ट्ज़,ने कहाँ ,सालोँ पहले,

that human beings are the "unfinished animals."

कि मनुष्य "अधूरा जानवर हैँ|"

And what he meant by that was that it is only human nature

और उनका क्या मतलब है कि ये सिर्फ मानव स्वभाव है

to have a human nature

मानव स्वभाव होना

that is very much the product of the society in which people live.

जो उत्पाद है समाज की जिसमे लोग रहते हैँ|

That human nature, that is to say our human nature,

वह मानव स्वभाव ,कहने का मतलब हमारा मानव स्वभाव,

is much more created than it is discovered.

को ज्यादातर बनाया गया नाकी खोज किया गया|

We design human nature

हम सँस्थाओँ के रचना करने के द्वारा

by designing the institutions within which people live and work.

मानव स्वभाव की रचना करते हैँ जिसमेँ लोग जीते हैँ और काम करते हैँ|

And so you people --

और इसलिये तुम लोग--

pretty much the closest I ever get to being with masters of the universe --

बहुत ज्यादा निकटतम मैँ अभी तक जासका ब्रह्मांड के स्वामी साथ--

you people should be asking yourself a question,

तुम लोग अपने आपसे एक सवाल पूछना चाहिये,

as you go back home to run your organizations.

जैसे आप घर जाते हैँ आपके सँगठन चलाने केलिये|

Just what kind of human nature do you want to help design?

तो आप किस तरह का मानव स्वभाव रचना करने केलिये मदद करेंगे?
