I have been teaching for a long time,

and in doing so

have acquired a body of knowledge about kids and learning

In 1931, my grandmother --

graduated from the eighth grade.

She went to school to get the information

because that's where the information lived.

It was in the books; it was inside the teacher's head;

توی کتابها و مغز معلم ها،

and she needed to go there to get the information,

اونم مجبور بود بره مدرسه تا اطلاعات رو بدست بیاره،

because that's how you learned.

چون تنها راه یادگیری همین بود.

Fast-forward a generation:

سریع بریم جلو،یک نسل بعد

this is the one-room schoolhouse, Oak Grove,

این مدرسه تک اطاقی اوآک گرو است،

where my father went to a one-room schoolhouse.

جایی که پدرم به یه مدرسه تک اطاقی می رفت.

And he again had to travel to the school

اونم مجبور بود بره مدرسه

to get the information from the teacher,

تا اطلاعات رو از معلم بگیره و

stored it in the only portable memory he has, which is inside his own head,

اونو توی تنها حافظه متحرکی که توی سرش داره ذخیره کنه

and take it with him,

و با خودش داشته باشه.

because that is how information was being transported

چونکه این تنها روش جا به جا شدن اطلاعات بود.

from teacher to student and then used in the world.

از معلم به دانش آموز و بعد هم استفاده اون در دنیا.

When I was a kid,

وقتی بچه بودم،

we had a set of encyclopedias at my house.

یه مجموعه دانش نامه در خونمون داشتیم

It was purchased the year I was born,

که درست همون سالی که من متولد شدم خریداری شده بود،

and it was extraordinary,

و واقعا خارق العاده بود.

because I did not have to wait to go to the library to get to the information.

چون مجبور نبودم برای بدست آوردن اطلاعات صبر کنم تا به کتابخونه برم،

The information was inside my house

اطلاعات توی خونمون بودند

and it was awesome.

و این فوق العاده بود.

This was different

این کاملا

than either generation had experienced before,

and it changed the way I interacted with information

و روش ارتباط من با اطلاعات رو

even at just a small level.

But the information was closer to me.

I could get access to it.

In the time that passes

between when I was a kid in high school

and when I started teaching,

we really see the advent of the Internet.

قطعا شاهد ظهور اینترنت هستیم.

Right about the time that the Internet gets going

درست دراین لحظه که اینترنت داره به عنوان

as an educational tool,

I take off from Wisconsin

من ویسکانسین رو ترک میکنم و

and move to Kansas, small town Kansas,

به شهر کوچک کنزاس میرم ،

where I had an opportunity to teach

جایی که این فرصت رو داشتم تا توی

in a lovely, small-town,

یه شهر کوچیک و دوست داشتنی درس بدم.

rural Kansas school district,

مدرسه روستایی منطقه کنزاس،

where I was teaching my favorite subject,

جایی که موضوع مورد علاقم رو درس می دادم.

American government.

"دولت آمریکا".

My first year -- super gung-ho -- going to teach American government,

سال اول_ خیلی مشتاقانه رفتم که دولت آمریکا رو درس بدم،

loved the political system.

عاشق سیستم سیاسی بودم.

Kids in the 12th grade:

ولی بچه های کلاس دوازدهم

not exactly all that enthusiastic

دقیقا اونقدرها علاقه ای به

about the American government system.

سیستم دولت آمریکا نداشتن.

Year two: learned a few things -- had to change my tactic.

سال دوم : یه چیزایی یاد گرفتم و مجبور شدم روش تدریسم رو تغییر بدم.

And I put in front of them an authentic experience

تجربه نابی رو در اختیارشون قرار دادم

that allowed them to learn for themselves.

که به اونها اجازه میداد تا برای خودشون یاد بگیرن.

I didn't tell them what to do or how to do it.

به اونها نگفتم که چی کار کنند یا چه طوری انجامش بدن.

I posed a problem in front of them,

مشکلی رو پیش روشون گذاشتم

which was to put on an election forum for their own community.

که اون تهیه یک فرم انتخاباتی برای اجتماع خودشون بود.

They produced flyers. They called offices.

اونها آگهی تبلیغاتی درست کردن،به ادارات زنگ زدند،

They checked schedules. They were meeting with secretaries.

برنامه ها رو چک می کردن، با چهره های سیاسی ملاقات می کردن،

They produced an election forum booklet

یه کتابچه تبادل نظر انتخاباتی درست کردن

for the entire town to learn more about their candidates.

تا همه مردم شهر بیشتر درباره کاندیداهاشون بدونن.

They invited everyone into the school

بعد یه بعدظهرهمه رو

for an evening of conversation

به مدرسه دعوت کردن

about government and politics

تا درباره سیاست و دولت و

and whether or not the streets were done well,

. اینکه کلا خیابانها به خوبی اداره میشن یا نه گفتگو کنن.

and really had this robust experiential learning.

و به واقع این کار یه یادگیری تجربی بسیار قوی داشت.

The older teachers -- more experienced --

معلم های مسن تر با تجربه تر ها

looked at me and went,

به من نگاه می کردند و می گفتن،

"Oh, there she is. That's so cute. She's trying to get that done."

" اونجارو. اون خیلی بامزه است. خودشو گذاشته سرکار."

(Laughter)

"She doesn't know what she's in for."

" انگار نمی دونه برای چی اینجاست."

But I knew that the kids would show up,

ولی من می دونستم بچه ها خودشان رو نشون میدن.

and I believed it,

و به این ایمان داشتم.

and I told them every week what I expected out of them.

هر هفته بهشون می گفتم که چه انتظاری ازشون دارم.

And that night, all 90 kids --

و در اون شب، همه ی ۹۰ دانش آموز--

dressed appropriately, doing their job, owning it.

با پوشش مناسب، کارشون رو انجام دادند و برنامه رو به دست گرفتن.

I had to just sit and watch.

من فقط باید می نشستم و تماشا می کردم.

It was theirs. It was experiential. It was authentic.

اون برنامه اونها بود. یه کارتجربی و ناب

It meant something to them.

که برای اونها معنی خاصی داشت

And they will step up.

و در اون پیشرفت می کردن.

From Kansas, I moved on to lovely Arizona,

از کنزاس ، به ایالت دوست داشتنی آریزونا رفتم،

where I taught in Flagstaff for a number of years,

جایی که چند سالی در "فلاگ استاف" درس دادم،

this time with middle school students.

منتها اینبار به بچه های دوره راهنمایی.

Luckily, I didn't have to teach them American government.

خوشبحتانه مجبور نبودم که بهشون دولت آمریکا رو درس بدم.

Could teach them the more exciting topic of geography.

می تونستم بهشون موضوعات جذاب تری از جغرافی رو درس بدم.

Again, "thrilled" to learn.

But what was interesting

about this position I found myself in in Arizona,

was I had this really

extraordinarily eclectic group of kids to work with

in a truly public school,

and we got to have these moments where we would get these opportunities.

And one opportunity

was we got to go and meet Paul Rusesabagina,

which is the gentleman

that the movie "Hotel Rwanda" is based after.

فیلم "هتل رواندا" درباره اون ساخته شده.

And he was going to speak at the high school next door to us.

و قرار بود که اون توی دبیرستان بغلی ما سخنرانی داشته باشه.

We could walk there. We didn't even have to pay for the buses.

می تونستیم پیاده به اونجا بریم، حتی مجبور نبودیم پول بلیت اتوبوس بدیم.

There was no expense cost. Perfect field trip.

هیچ هزینه ای نداشت. یک گردش عالی .

The problem then becomes

مشکل اینبار این بود که چه جوری

how do you take seventh- and eighth-graders to a talk about genocide

بچه های کلاس هفتم و هشتم رو به سخنرانی که درباره نسل کشی است ببری

and deal with the subject in a way

و با این موضوع جوری برخورد کنی

that is responsible and respectful,

که هم مسئولیت پذیر باشه و هم قابل احترام،

and they know what to do with it.

و اونها بدونن که با این مسئله چی کار کنن.

And so we chose to look at Paul Rusesabagina

بنابراین تصمیم گرفتیم تا به پاول راسزاباگینا

as an example of a gentleman

به عنوان نمونه مرد محترمی نگاه کنیم

who singularly used his life to do something positive.

که شخصا از زندگی اش برای انجام کار مثبت بهره برده.

I then challenged the kids to identify

بعد بچه ها رو به این چالش کشیدم که

someone in their own life, or in their own story, or in their own world,

کسی رو در زندگی شون یا داستانشون یا دنیای خودشون پیدا کنن،

that they could identify that had done a similar thing.

که اونم یه همچین کاری کرده باشه.

I asked them to produce a little movie about it.

ازشون خواستم که یه فیلم کوتاه دربارش بسازن.

It's the first time we'd done this.

این اولین باری بود که یه همچین کاری می کردیم.

Nobody really knew how to make these little movies on the computer,

هیچکی به درستی نمی دونست چه جوری با کامپیوتر این فیلم های کوتاه رو درست کنه.

but they were into it. And I asked them to put their own voice over it.

اما اونها باید انجامش میدادن. ازشون خواستم تا صدای خودشون رو روی فیلم بذارن.

It was the most awesome moment of revelation

وقتی شما از بچه ها می خواهید از صدای خودشون استفاده کنن،

that when you ask kids to use their own voice

و برای خودشون صحبت کنن،لحظه آشکار شدن اینکه

and ask them to speak for themselves,

چه چیزی رو میخوان به اشتراک بذارن،

what they're willing to share.

فوق العاده ترین لحظه است.

The last question of the assignment is:

آخرین سوال تکلیف اینه که :

how do you plan to use your life

شما چه جوری برنامه ریزی میکنید تا اززندگی تون

to positively impact other people?

برای گذاشتن تاثیر مثبت روی دیگران بهره برید؟

The things that kids will say

وقتی از بچه ها سوال میکنید

when you ask them and take the time to listen

و وقت میذارید تا بهشون گوش کنید، چیزایی که میگن

is extraordinary.

خارق العاده است.

Fast-forward to Pennsylvania, where I find myself today.

سریع بریم جلو،به پنسیلوانیا جایی که درحال حاظر هستم.

I teach at the Science Leadership Academy,

اونجا درآکادمی علوم مدیریت درس میدم،

which is a partnership school between the Franklin Institute

که درواقع یه مدرسه مشارکتی بین موسسه فرانکلین و

and the school district of Philadelphia.

مدرسه منطقه فیلادلفیا است.

We are a nine through 12 public school,

ما نهمین مدرسه از مجموع دوازده مدرسه عمومی هستیم،

but we do school quite differently.

ولی ما کاملا متفاوت عمل می کنیم.

I moved there primarily

بیشتر به این دلیل به اونجا رفتم

to be part of a learning environment

تا بخشی از محیط یادگیری باشم که

that validated the way that I knew that kids learned,

تایید کننده روشی بود که می دونستم بچه ها یادگرفتند.

and that really wanted to investigate

واینکه واقعا میخواستم روی مواردی که ممکن به نظر می رسید

what was possible

when you are willing to let go

در زمانیکه می خواهید بعضی از

of some of the paradigms of the past,

of information scarcity when my grandmother was in school

and when my father was in school and even when I was in school,

and to a moment when we have information surplus.

و همینطور زمانی که ما بیش از حد اطلاعات داریم.

So what do you do when the information is all around you?

وقتی اطلاعات در اطرافتون هستن، شما چی کار می کنید؟

Why do you have kids come to school

چرا بچه ها رو مجبور می کنید به مدرسه برن،

if they no longer have to come there to get the information?

وقتی اونها مجبور نیستن برای داشتن اطلاعات به اونجا برن؟

In Philadelphia we have a one-to-one laptop program,

در فیلادلفیا ما یک برنامه لپ تاپ تک به تک داریم،

so the kids are bringing in laptops with them everyday,

اینجوری که بچه ها هرروز لپ تاپها رو با خودشون میارن،

taking them home, getting access to information.

به خونشون میبرن و به اطلاعات دسترسی دارند.

And here's the thing that you need to get comfortable with

و این چیزیه که شما باید باهاش کنار بیایید،

when you've given the tool

to acquire information to students,

is that you have to be comfortable with this idea

of allowing kids to fail

as part of the learning process.

We deal right now in the educational landscape

ما در حال حاظر در چشم انداز آموزش

with an infatuation

with the culture of one right answer

that can be properly bubbled on the average multiple choice test,

که مطمئنا در بیشتر سوالات چهار جوابی کارآمد است،

and I am here to share with you:

من اینجام تا با شما اینو به اشتراک بذارم که

it is not learning.

"این یادگیری نیست".

That is the absolute wrong thing to ask,

این یه اشتباه محضه که از بچه ها بخواهید

to tell kids to never be wrong.

و یا بهشون بگید که هرگز اشتباه نکنند.

To ask them to always have the right answer

اینکه ازشون بخواهید که همیشه جواب صحیح رو بدن

doesn't allow them to learn.

فرصت یادگیری رو ازشون میگیره.

So we did this project,

بنابراین ما این پروژه رو انجام دادیم،

and this is one of the artifacts of the project.

و این یکی از کارهای دستی این پروژه است.

I almost never show them off

و به خاطر موضوع ایده شکست

because of the issue of the idea of failure.

من تقریبا هرگز اونا رو مطرح نمی کنم.

My students produced these info-graphics

دانش آموزانم این اطلاعات گرافیکی رو

as a result of a unit that we decided to do at the end of the year

به عنوان واحدی که تصمیم گرفتیم در آخر سال انجام بدیم

responding to the oil spill.

در رابطه با مسئله نشت نفت تهیه کردن.

I asked them to take the examples that we were seeing

ازشون خواستم تا نمونه های اطلاعات گرافیکی

of the info-graphics that existed

که به طور گسترده در رسانه های عمومی

in a lot of mass media,

شاهدش هستیم رو بردارن ،

and take a look at what were the interesting components of it,

نگاهی به اجزای جالبشون بندازن

and produce one for themselves

of a different man-made disaster from American history.

And they had certain criteria to do it.

معیارهای خاصی هم برای انجام این کار داشتن.

They were a little uncomfortable with it,

یه کم با انجام این کار راحت نبودن،

because we'd never done this before, and they didn't know exactly how to do it.

چونکه دقیقا نمی دونستن چه جوری میشه انجامش داد.

They can talk -- they're very smooth,

اونها می تونن صحبت کنن--

and they can write very, very well,

و همینطور می تونن خیلی خیلی خوب بنویسن،

but asking them to communicate ideas in a different way

اما اینکه ازشون بخواهی ایده ها رو به یه روش متفاوت بیان کنن

was a little uncomfortable for them.

یه کم اذیتشون می کرد.

But I gave them the room to just do the thing.

ولی من بهشون فرصت دادم که فقط کار رو انجام بدن.

Go create. Go figure it out.

برو بسازش، ازش سر دربیار.

Let's see what we can do.

بذار ببینیم چی کار میتونیم بکنیم.

And the student that persistently

و دانش آموزی که با پشت کار

turns out the best visual product did not disappoint.

بهترین کار تصویری رو ارایه داد نا امید نشد.

This was done in like two or three days.

این پروژه حدودا دو سه روزه انجام شد.

And this is the work of the student that consistently did it.

و این کار دانش آموزی است که بی وقفه مشغول انجام دادنش بود.

And when I sat the students down, I said, "Who's got the best one?"

و وقتی من بچه ها رو نشوندم و ازشون پرسیدم" بهترین کار مال کیه؟"

And they immediately went, "There it is."

بی معطلی همه گفتند "این یکی".

Didn't read anything. "There it is."

اونها چیزی رو نخوندن. "این یکی".

And I said, "Well what makes it great?"

بعد ازشون پرسیدم "خب چی این کار رو عالی کرده؟"

And they're like, "Oh, the design's good, and he's using good color.

گفتن "خب..طراحی خوبش و اینکه از رنگای خوبی استفاده کرده.

And there's some ... " And they went through all that we processed out loud.

و اینکه یه کم..." همه با صدای بلند شروع کردیم به بررسی اون.

And I said, "Go read it."

و بعد گفتم "حالا برید و اینو بخونید."

And they're like, "Oh, that one wasn't so awesome."

اونها گفتن"خب این همچین محشر هم نیست."

And then we went to another one --

بعدش رفتیم سراغ یکی دیگه--

it didn't have great visuals, but it had great information --

از نظر گرافیکی خاص نبود ولی اطلاعات خوبی داشت--

and spent an hour talking about the learning process,

و یه ساعت درباره روند یادگیری صحبت کردیم ،

because it wasn't about whether or not it was perfect,

چون پروژه درباره این نبود که فلان اثر فوق العاده است یا نه

or whether or not it was what I could create.

یا اینکه اون همه اونچیزی بود که می تونستن بسازن یا نه،

It asked them to create for themselves,

ازشون خواسته شده بود برای خودشون درست کنن.

and it allowed them to fail,

و این بهشون اجازه داد تا شکست بخورن،

process, learn from.

ادامه بدن و ازش یاد بگیرن.

And when we do another round of this in my class this year,

و وقتی یه دور دیگه این کار رو امسال در کلاسم انجام بدیم

they will do better this time,

اونها اینبار بهتر از پسش بر میان.

because learning

چرا که یادگیری

has to include an amount of failure,

باید شامل یه مقدار شکست هم باشه،

because failure is instructional

چونکه شکست در روند یادگیری

in the process.

آموزنده است.

There are a million pictures

یک میلیون تصویر هست

that I could click through here,

که می تونستم اونها رو اینجا نشون بدم،

and had to choose carefully -- this is one of my favorites --

ولی مجبور بودم بادقت اونارو انتخاب کنم -- این یکی از عکسهای دلخواهمه --

of students learning,

از یادگیری دانش آموزان،

of what learning can look like

از اینکه یادگیری چه شکلی می تونه باشه

in a landscape where we let go of the idea

در منظره ای که ما این ایده رو مطرح می کنیم

that kids have to come to school to get the information,

که به جای اینکه بچه ها به مدرسه برن تا اطلاعات رو بدست بیارن،

but instead, ask them what they can do with it.

ازشون بخواهیم چه کاری می تونن با اون اطلاعات بکنن.

Ask them really interesting questions.

ازشون سوالات خیلی جذاب بپرسیم.

They will not disappoint.

اونا از درس خوندن زده نمی شن.

Ask them to go to places,

ازشون بخواهید به جاهایی برن

to see things for themselves,

تا چیزهایی رو برای خودشون ببینند،

to actually experience the learning,

تا واقعا یادگیری رو حس کنن،

to play, to inquire.

تا باهاش بازی کنن، یا روش تحقیق کنن.

This is one of my favorite photos,

because this was taken on Tuesday,

چرا که این عکس روز سه شنبه گرفته شد،

when I asked the students to go to the polls.

روزی که ازشون خواستم که برای رای گیری برن.

This is Robbie, and this was his first day of voting,

این رابیه، در اولین روز انتخابش،

and he wanted to share that with everybody and do that.

و دوست داشت اینو با همه به اشتراک بذاره و دیگران هم انجامش بدن.

But this is learning too,

اما اینم یادگیریه،

because we asked them to go out into real spaces.

چرا که ازشون خواستیم تا برن بیرون، به مکانهای واقعی.

The main point

نکته اصلی اینه که

is that, if we continue to look at education

اگه ما همچنان به آموزش جوری نگاه کنیم

as if it's about coming to school

که انگار فقط به مدرسه میریم

to get the information

تا اطلاعات رو بدست بیاریم

and not about experiential learning,

و نه به عنوان یادگیری تجربی،

empowering student voice and embracing failure,

یا تقویت صدای دانش موزان و استقبال از شکست،

we're missing the mark.

راه رو گم کردیم.

And everything that everybody is talking about today

و اگه ما همچنان پابند سیستم آموزشی باشیم

isn't possible if we keep having an educational system

که برای این ویژگی ها ارزشی قایل نباشه ،

that does not value these qualities,

همه اونچیزی که امروزه ازش صحبت میشه بی فایده است.

because we won't get there with a standardized test,

چونکه ما با یه امتحان استاندارد شده

and we won't get there with a culture of one right answer.

یا فرهنگ یه جواب صحیح هرگز به اون هدف دست پیدا نمی کنیم.

We know how to do this better,

ما می دونیم چه جوری میشه اینکارو بهتر انجام داد

and it's time to do better.

و الان وقته بهتر انجام دادنه.
