I have been teaching for a long time,

and in doing so

have acquired a body of knowledge about kids and learning

that I really wish more people would understand

In 1931, my grandmother --

graduated from the eighth grade.

She went to school to get the information

because that's where the information lived.

It was in the books; it was inside the teacher's head;

ज्ञान किताबों मे होता था, जानकारी शिक्षक के दिमाग में बसेरा करती थी।

and she needed to go there to get the information,

और उन्हें उसे ग्रहण करने के लिये वहाँ जाना ही होता था,

because that's how you learned.

क्योंकि तब ऐसे ही सीखते थे।

Fast-forward a generation:

सीधे एक पीढी बाद:

this is the one-room schoolhouse, Oak Grove,

ये एक कमरे का विद्यालय है, ओक ग्रूव,

where my father went to a one-room schoolhouse.

जहाँ मेरे पिता ने शिक्षा ग्रहण की।

And he again had to travel to the school

और उन्हें भी स्कूल जाना होता था

to get the information from the teacher,

stored it in the only portable memory he has, which is inside his own head,

and take it with him,

because that is how information was being transported

When I was a kid,

we had a set of encyclopedias at my house.

It was purchased the year I was born,

and it was extraordinary,

और वो असाधारण था,

because I did not have to wait to go to the library to get to the information.

क्योंकि मुझे फ़िर जानकारी के लिये पुस्तकालय जाने का इंतज़ार नहीं करना होता था;

The information was inside my house

जानकारी मेरे घर पर ही उपलब्द्ध थी

and it was awesome.

और ये ज़बरदस्त था।

This was different

ये बिलकुल ही अलग था

than either generation had experienced before,

पिछली दो पीढियों के अनुभव से,

and it changed the way I interacted with information

और उसने मेरे जानकारी इस्तेमाल करने के तरीकों को बदल डाला

even at just a small level.

But the information was closer to me.

I could get access to it.

In the time that passes

between when I was a kid in high school

I take off from Wisconsin

and move to Kansas, small town Kansas,

where I had an opportunity to teach

in a lovely, small-town,

rural Kansas school district,

ग्रामीण कान्सास के विद्यालय में,

where I was teaching my favorite subject,

American government.

अमरीकी सरकारतंत्र।

My first year -- super gung-ho -- going to teach American government,

मेरा पहला साल -- मस्तमौला मज़ेदार - अमरीकी सरकारतंत्र पढा़ने जाना,

loved the political system.

और मेरा राजनीतिक उपक्रम से बेहद लगाव।

Kids in the 12th grade:

बारहवीं के बच्चे:

not exactly all that enthusiastic

उतना कुछ खास उत्साहित नहीं थे

about the American government system.

अमरीकी सरकार को समझने में।

Year two: learned a few things -- had to change my tactic.

दूसरा साल: कुछ चीज़ें सीखी -- अपने तरीके बदलने पड़े।

And I put in front of them an authentic experience

और मैनें उनके सामने एक असल अनुभव रखा

that allowed them to learn for themselves.

जो कि उन्हें खुद सीखने का मौका देता था।

I didn't tell them what to do or how to do it.

मैने उन्हें नहीं बताया कि क्या और कैसे करें।

I posed a problem in front of them,

which was to put on an election forum for their own community.

They produced flyers. They called offices.

They checked schedules. They were meeting with secretaries.

They produced an election forum booklet

for the entire town to learn more about their candidates.

They invited everyone into the school

उन्होंने सबको विद्यालय में बुलाया

for an evening of conversation

एक शाम भर बातचीत करने के लिये

about government and politics

सरकार और राजनीति पर

and whether or not the streets were done well,

और गलियाँ ठीक से बनीं थीं जैसी बातों पर भी,

and really had this robust experiential learning.

और इस दौरान इन बच्चों ने सच में सुदृढ अनुभव-आधारित शिक्षा पायी।

The older teachers -- more experienced --

पुराने शिक्षक -- जो कि ज्यादा अनुभवी थी --

looked at me and went,

मुझे देखते थे और कहते थे,

"Oh, there she is. That's so cute. She's trying to get that done."

"देखो इसे। कितना प्यारी है। और ये वो ये सबकुछ करवाने की कोशिश कर रही है।"

(Laughter)

"She doesn't know what she's in for."

"इसे अंदाज़ा ही नहीं है कि इसके साथ क्या होने वाला है।"

But I knew that the kids would show up,

मगर मुझे पता था कि बच्चे ज़रूर आयेंगे।

and I believed it,

और इसमें मेरा दृढ विश्वास था।

and I told them every week what I expected out of them.

और मैं उन्हें हर हफ़्ते बताती कि मेरी क्या अपेक्षा है।

And that night, all 90 kids --

और उस रात, सारे के सारे ९० बच्चे --

dressed appropriately, doing their job, owning it.

ढँग के कपडे पहने, अपना काम कर रहे थे, उसे अपना काम समझ कर।

I had to just sit and watch.

मुझे सिर्फ़ बैठ कर देखना था।

It was theirs. It was experiential. It was authentic.

वो उनका खुद का काम था। वो अनुभव-आधारित था। वो सोलह आने खरा था।

It meant something to them.

और वो उनके लिए मायने रखता था।

And they will step up.

और वो आगे बढेंगे।

From Kansas, I moved on to lovely Arizona,

कान्सास से, मैं ख़ूबसूरत एरिज़ोना चली गयी.

where I taught in Flagstaff for a number of years,

जहाँ मैंने फ़्लैगस्टाफ़ में कई साल तक पढाया,

this time with middle school students.

और इस बार माध्यमिक विद्यालय के विद्यार्थियों को।

Luckily, I didn't have to teach them American government.

Could teach them the more exciting topic of geography.

Again, "thrilled" to learn.

But what was interesting

about this position I found myself in in Arizona,

was I had this really

extraordinarily eclectic group of kids to work with

in a truly public school,

and we got to have these moments where we would get these opportunities.

And one opportunity

was we got to go and meet Paul Rusesabagina,

which is the gentleman

that the movie "Hotel Rwanda" is based after.

And he was going to speak at the high school next door to us.

We could walk there. We didn't even have to pay for the buses.

हम तो बस पैदल ही वहाँ चले गये; बस का किराया भी नहीं लगा।

There was no expense cost. Perfect field trip.

बिल्कुल मुफ़्त। बिलकुल सटीक अध्ययन-यात्रा।

The problem then becomes

असली समस्या ये थी

how do you take seventh- and eighth-graders to a talk about genocide

कि सातवीं और आठवीं के बच्चों से नरसंहार पर कैसे बात करें

and deal with the subject in a way

और कैसे इस विषय से निपटें,

that is responsible and respectful,

जिम्मेदारी और सम्मान के साथ,

and they know what to do with it.

जिससे कि बच्चों को भी समझ में आये।

And so we chose to look at Paul Rusesabagina

और इसलिये हमने पौल रुसेसबगिना को

as an example of a gentleman

ऐसे व्यक्ति के उदाहरण के रूप में लिया

who singularly used his life to do something positive.

जिन्होंने लीक से हटकर भी अपने जीवन का सकारात्मक इस्तेमाल किया।

I then challenged the kids to identify

फ़िर मैनें बच्चों से कहा कि

someone in their own life, or in their own story, or in their own world,

that they could identify that had done a similar thing.

I asked them to produce a little movie about it.

It's the first time we'd done this.

Nobody really knew how to make these little movies on the computer,

but they were into it. And I asked them to put their own voice over it.

It was the most awesome moment of revelation

ये ऐसा क्षण था जिसने मेरी आँखें खोल दीं

that when you ask kids to use their own voice

कि जब आप बच्चों से खुद की आवाज़ इस्तेमाल करने को कहते हो

and ask them to speak for themselves,

और उन्हें अपने मन की बात बोलने को कहते हो,

what they're willing to share.

वो बहुत ही गजब की बातें बाँटते हैं।

The last question of the assignment is:

how do you plan to use your life

to positively impact other people?

The things that kids will say

वो बातें जो बच्चे बोलते हैं

when you ask them and take the time to listen

यदि आप उनसे पूछें और समय निकाल कर सुनें,

is extraordinary.

असाधारण होती हैं।

Fast-forward to Pennsylvania, where I find myself today.

और फ़िर सीधे पेन्सिलवेनिया, जहाँ मैं आजकल हूँ।

I teach at the Science Leadership Academy,

मैं विज्ञान नेतृत्व अकादमी (साइंस लीडरशिप अकादमी) में पढाती हूँ,

which is a partnership school between the Franklin Institute

and the school district of Philadelphia.

We are a nine through 12 public school,

but we do school quite differently.

I moved there primarily

to be part of a learning environment

that validated the way that I knew that kids learned,

and that really wanted to investigate

what was possible

when you are willing to let go

of some of the paradigms of the past,

of information scarcity when my grandmother was in school

and when my father was in school and even when I was in school,

and to a moment when we have information surplus.

So what do you do when the information is all around you?

तो हमें क्या करना चाहिये जब आसपास जानकारी और ज्ञान पटा पडा हो?

Why do you have kids come to school

क्यों आप बच्चों को विद्यालय बुलायेंगे

if they no longer have to come there to get the information?

जब कि उन्हें जानकारी के लिये आने की ज़रूरत ही नहीं है?

In Philadelphia we have a one-to-one laptop program,

फ़िलेडेल्फ़िया में हम वन-टू-वन लैपटॉप कार्यक्रम चलाते हैं,

so the kids are bringing in laptops with them everyday,

इसलिये बच्चे अपने साथ हर रोज़ लैपटॉप लाते हैं,

taking them home, getting access to information.

घर ले जाते हैं, जानकारी प्राप्त करते हैं।

And here's the thing that you need to get comfortable with

और आप को इस बात के साथ साम्य अनुभव करना होगा कि

when you've given the tool

जब आपने

to acquire information to students,

बच्चों को ज्ञान पाने का ज़रिया दे दिया है,

is that you have to be comfortable with this idea

तो आपको इस बात से समझौता करना होगा कि

of allowing kids to fail

बच्चे का असफ़ल होना,

as part of the learning process.

सीखने की प्रक्रिया का हिस्सा है।

We deal right now in the educational landscape

हम आजकल ऐसे शिक्षण वातावरण से जूझ रहे हैं

with an infatuation

जो कि ग्रसित है

with the culture of one right answer

'एक ही सही उत्तर है' की संस्कृति से,

that can be properly bubbled on the average multiple choice test,

जिससे की किसी उत्तर-पुस्तिका के खानों में चिन्ह लगाया जा सके,

and I am here to share with you:

और मैं आपको ये बताना चाहती हूँ,

it is not learning.

कि ये सीखने की प्रक्रिया नहीं है।

That is the absolute wrong thing to ask,

ये गलत से भी गलत है कि

to tell kids to never be wrong.

हम बच्चों से कभी भी गलती न करने को कहें।

To ask them to always have the right answer

उन्हें हमेशा केवल सही उत्तर देने के लिये प्रोत्साहित करने

doesn't allow them to learn.

से उन्हें सीखने का मौका नहीं मिलता है।

So we did this project,

तो हमने एक योजना कार्यान्वित की,

and this is one of the artifacts of the project.

और ये इस कार्यक्रम में बनी एक कृति है।

I almost never show them off

मैं शायद ही कभी इसे दिखाती हूँ

because of the issue of the idea of failure.

My students produced these info-graphics

as a result of a unit that we decided to do at the end of the year

responding to the oil spill.

I asked them to take the examples that we were seeing

in a lot of mass media,

and take a look at what were the interesting components of it,

and produce one for themselves

of a different man-made disaster from American history.

And they had certain criteria to do it.

They were a little uncomfortable with it,

because we'd never done this before, and they didn't know exactly how to do it.

They can talk -- they're very smooth,

and they can write very, very well,

but asking them to communicate ideas in a different way

was a little uncomfortable for them.

But I gave them the room to just do the thing.

Go create. Go figure it out.

Let's see what we can do.

And the student that persistently

और जो विद्यार्थी हमेशा

turns out the best visual product did not disappoint.

सबसे अच्छा चित्र बनाता था, उसने निराश नहीं किया।

This was done in like two or three days.

ये करीब दो या तीन दिन में किया गया काम है।

And this is the work of the student that consistently did it.

और ये उस विद्यार्थी का काम है जो हमेशा अच्छा चित्रण करता था।

And when I sat the students down, I said, "Who's got the best one?"

और जब मैनें अपने विद्यार्थियों से पूछा, "किसका सबसे अच्छा है?"

And they immediately went, "There it is."

तो एक्दम सबने कहा, "ये वाला।"

Didn't read anything. "There it is."

किसी ने कुछ पढा नही। सीधे कहा "ये वाला।"

And I said, "Well what makes it great?"

और मैने कहा, "ये वाला सबसे अच्छा क्यों है?"

And they're like, "Oh, the design's good, and he's using good color.

तो उन्होंने कहा, "इसका डिजाइन बढिया है, इसमें बढिया रँग हैं।

And there's some ... " And they went through all that we processed out loud.

और इसमें ये है, वो है..." और उन्होंने वो सब कहा जो सामने से दिख रहा था।

And I said, "Go read it."

और मैने कहा, "अब जाओ, उसे पढो।"

And they're like, "Oh, that one wasn't so awesome."

तब उन्होंने कहा, "ह्म्म, ये शायद उतना अच्छा नहीं है।"

And then we went to another one --

और फ़िर हम दूसरे वाले पर गये --

it didn't have great visuals, but it had great information --

उसमें चित्रण उतना अच्छा नहीं था, मगर वो बहुत ज्ञानप्रद था --

and spent an hour talking about the learning process,

और करीब एक घंटा तक हमने सीखने की प्रक्रिया पर बात की,

because it wasn't about whether or not it was perfect,

क्योंकि बात ये नहीं थी कि कौन सा बेहतर है,

or whether or not it was what I could create.

या मैं क्या बना पाया;

It asked them to create for themselves,

इस में उन्होंने स्वयं के लिये रचना की।

and it allowed them to fail,

और इसने उन्हें असफ़ल होने दिया,

process, learn from.

And when we do another round of this in my class this year,

they will do better this time,

because learning

शिक्षण-प्रक्रिया में

has to include an amount of failure,

असफ़लता का पुट होना अत्यावश्यक है,

because failure is instructional

क्योंकि असफ़लता से ही सही निर्देश

in the process.

There are a million pictures

that I could click through here,

and had to choose carefully -- this is one of my favorites --

of students learning,

of what learning can look like

in a landscape where we let go of the idea

that kids have to come to school to get the information,

बच्चों को सीखने के लिये विद्यालय आने की ज़रूरत है,

but instead, ask them what they can do with it.

और इसके बजाय, उनसे ही पूछें कि उन्हें क्या करना है।

Ask them really interesting questions.

उनसे रोचक प्रश्न पूछें।

They will not disappoint.

वो आपको निराश नहीं करेंगे।

Ask them to go to places,

उनसे अलग अलग जगहों पर जाने के लिये कहिये,

to see things for themselves,

चीज़ों को खुद समझने के लिये कहिये,

to actually experience the learning,

खुद अनुभव करने के लिये कहिये,

to play, to inquire.

खेलने के लिये, जिज्ञासु होने के लिये कहिये।

This is one of my favorite photos,

because this was taken on Tuesday,

when I asked the students to go to the polls.

जब मैने बच्चों से वोट डालने के लिये कहा।

This is Robbie, and this was his first day of voting,

ये है रोबी, और ये इसका वोट डालने का पहला मौका है,

and he wanted to share that with everybody and do that.

और ये सबको बताना चाहता था और वोट करना चाहता था।

But this is learning too,

मगर ये भी तो सीखना ही है,

because we asked them to go out into real spaces.

क्योंकि हम उन्हें असल जगहों पर जाने के लिये कह रहे हैं।

The main point

असल मुद्दा

is that, if we continue to look at education

ये है कि, यदि हम शिक्षा का मतलब सिर्फ़

as if it's about coming to school

विद्यालय आना और

to get the information

जानकारी प्राप्त करना समझते रहे,

and not about experiential learning,

बजाय अनुभवशील शिक्षा के,

empowering student voice and embracing failure,

बजाय विद्यार्थियों को सुनने के, और बजाय असफ़लता को स्वीकार करने के,

we're missing the mark.

हम बहुत पीछे छूट जायेंगे।

And everything that everybody is talking about today

और वो सब जिसके बारे में आज सबलोग बात कर रहे हैं

isn't possible if we keep having an educational system

बिल्कुल संभव नहीं होगा यदि हम ऎसी शिक्षा-प्रणाली को पालते रहेंगे

that does not value these qualities,

जो इन गुणों का मूल्य ही नहीं आँक पाती है,

because we won't get there with a standardized test,

क्योंकि एक धुरी और मानक पर चलने वाले प्रश्नोत्तरीय तरीके से कुछ नहीं होगा,

and we won't get there with a culture of one right answer.

और न ही 'सही उत्तर पर चिन्ह लगाओ' की संस्कृति हमें कुछ देगी।

We know how to do this better,

हम जानते है कि इस से बेहतर कैसे हो सकता है,

and it's time to do better.

और अब समय आ गया है बेहतर बनने का।
