I have been teaching for a long time,

and in doing so

have acquired a body of knowledge about kids and learning

that I really wish more people would understand

about the potential of students.

In 1931, my grandmother --

graduated from the eighth grade.

She went to school to get the information

بۆ وەرگرتنى زانیارى بۆ قوتابخانە دەچوو

because that's where the information lived.

It was in the books; it was inside the teacher's head;

لەناو پەرتووکەکان و .لەناو مێشکى مامۆستاکان

and she needed to go there to get the information,

بۆ بەدەستھێنانی زانیاری ،وا پێویست بوو بچێتە ئەوێ

because that's how you learned.

.چونکە بەم جۆرە فێر دەبوویت

Fast-forward a generation:

:بێینە سەر نەوەی دواتر

this is the one-room schoolhouse, Oak Grove,

،ئەمە قوتابخانەیەکی یەک پۆلییە، ئۆک گرۆڤ

where my father went to a one-room schoolhouse.

.باوکم بۆ ئەم قوتابخانە یەک پۆلییە دەچووە

And he again had to travel to the school

ڕێگەیەکی دووری بۆ گەیشتنە قوتابخانەکە دەبڕی

to get the information from the teacher,

،بۆ ئەوەى زانیاری لە مامۆستا وەربگرێت

stored it in the only portable memory he has, which is inside his own head,

ھەڵیگرتووە لە مێشکیدا کە تەنھا ،ئامرازی ھەلگرتنی زانیاری بووە

and take it with him,

،و لەگەڵ خۆیدا بردویەتى

because that is how information was being transported

چوونکە ئەوە تەنھا ڕێگە بووە بۆ گواستنەوەی زانیاری

from teacher to student and then used in the world.

لە مامۆستاوە بۆ خوێنکار دواتر لە جیھان بەکارهاتووە

When I was a kid,

،کاتێک منداڵ بووم

we had a set of encyclopedias at my house.

.لەماڵەوە کۆمەلێک ئینسایکلۆپیدیامان ھەبوو

It was purchased the year I was born,

،لەو ساڵە کڕدرابوو کە من لە دایک بووم

and it was extraordinary,

،و ئەمەش شتێکى نائاسایى بوو

because I did not have to wait to go to the library to get to the information.

پێویستی نەدەکرد چاوەڕوانبم تا .دەچم بۆ پەرتوکخانە و زانیاری وەربگرم

The information was inside my house

.زانیاری لەناو خانووەکەی من بوو

and it was awesome.

.زۆر خۆشبوو

This was different

ئەمە جیاواز بوو

than either generation had experienced before,

نەوەکانەکانی پێشتر ،ئەم ئەزمونەیان نەبووە

and it changed the way I interacted with information

even at just a small level.

But the information was closer to me.

I could get access to it.

In the time that passes

between when I was a kid in high school

we really see the advent of the Internet.

Right about the time that the Internet gets going

as an educational tool,

I take off from Wisconsin

and move to Kansas, small town Kansas,

where I had an opportunity to teach

ئەو ھەلەم بۆ ڕەخسا وانە بڵێمەوە

in a lovely, small-town,

،لە شرۆچکەیەکی جوانى بچووک

rural Kansas school district,

،بەڕێوەبەرایەتی خوێندنگەی لادێیەکان

where I was teaching my favorite subject,

،من وانەی دڵخوازی خۆم فێردەکردن

American government.

My first year -- super gung-ho -- going to teach American government,

یەکەم ساڵ مامۆستایەتیم و ،ئەو وانەیە فێردەکەم کە حەزم لێیەتی

loved the political system.

Kids in the 12th grade:

:فێرخوازانی پۆلی ١٢

not exactly all that enthusiastic

about the American government system.

.سیستەمی سیاسی ئەمریکی نەبوون

Year two: learned a few things -- had to change my tactic.

،لە ساڵی دووەم ھەندێک شت فێربووم .من دەبێ تاکتیکی خۆم بگۆڕم

And I put in front of them an authentic experience

تاقیکردنەوەیەکی سەرنج ڕاکێشم بۆ ڕێکخستن

that allowed them to learn for themselves.

.بۆ ئەوەی خۆیان فێرببن

I didn't tell them what to do or how to do it.

پێم نەوتن چۆن و .بە چ شێوەک بیکەن

I posed a problem in front of them,

،کێشەکەم خستە بەردەستیان

which was to put on an election forum for their own community.

.دەبوایە هەڵبژاردن بۆ کۆمەڵگاکەیان ڕێکبخەن

They produced flyers. They called offices.

پۆستەر پرێنت کرا .پەیوەندیان بە خەڵکەوە کرد

They checked schedules. They were meeting with secretaries.

.خشتەی کار و کۆمەڵێک چاوپێکەوتنیان ڕێکخست

They produced an election forum booklet

پەڕتوکێکی بچوکیان چاپکرد

for the entire town to learn more about their candidates.

.تا کاندیدەکان بە خەڵک بناسێنن

They invited everyone into the school

،خەڵکەکەیان بۆ قوتابخانە بانگهێشت کرد

for an evening of conversation

بۆ ئێوارەیەک بۆ تاوتوکردنی

about government and politics

دەربارەی سیاسەت و حکومەت

and whether or not the streets were done well,

،و ئایا کار بۆ چاککردنی شەقامەکان کراوە

and really had this robust experiential learning.

.ئەمە دەرفەتێکی فێربوونی راستەقینە بوو

The older teachers -- more experienced --

مامۆستا بە تەمەنەکان ئەزموونیان زیاتر بوو

looked at me and went,

سەیری منیان دەکرد و

"Oh, there she is. That's so cute. She's trying to get that done."

".سەیربکەن چەند بە دڵ پاکی ئەم کارە دەکات"

(Laughter)

"She doesn't know what she's in for."

"نازانێ خۆی تووشی چی کردووە"

But I knew that the kids would show up,

،بەڵام من دەمزانی مناڵەکان ئەو کارە دەکەن

and I believed it,

،باوەڕم پێیان بوو

and I told them every week what I expected out of them.

.و گشت ھەفتەیەک پێم دەوتن: باوەڕم پێتانە

And that night, all 90 kids --

ئەم شەوە گشت ٩٠ قوتابیەکە ھاتن

dressed appropriately, doing their job, owning it.

بەجلی زۆر رێکەوە .بە کارەکانی خۆیان و خۆیان سەلماند

I had to just sit and watch.

.من تەنھا دانیشتم و سەیرم دەکردن

It was theirs. It was experiential. It was authentic.

.خاوەنی کارەکە بوون. ئەزموونێکی جوان بوو

It meant something to them.

.تایبەت بوو بە خۆیان

And they will step up.

.خۆیان بۆ ئەم کارە ئامادە دەکەن

From Kansas, I moved on to lovely Arizona,

،لە کانساسەوە چوومە ئەریزۆنای ئازیز

where I taught in Flagstaff for a number of years,

.لەوێ بۆ چەند ساڵێک وانەی ئاڵام فێردەکردن

this time with middle school students.

.ئەم جارە فێرخوازی ناوەندیم فێردەکرد

Luckily, I didn't have to teach them American government.

.خۆشبەختانە، وانەی حکومەتم فێرنەدەکردن

Could teach them the more exciting topic of geography.

Again, "thrilled" to learn.

But what was interesting

about this position I found myself in in Arizona,

was I had this really

extraordinarily eclectic group of kids to work with

in a truly public school,

and we got to have these moments where we would get these opportunities.

that the movie "Hotel Rwanda" is based after.

And he was going to speak at the high school next door to us.

We could walk there. We didn't even have to pay for the buses.

دەمانتوانی بە پیاسە بچین و .پارەی پاس نەدەین

There was no expense cost. Perfect field trip.

.ھیچ تێچوی نەبوو شوێنێکی تەواو گونجاو بوو

The problem then becomes

کێشەکە لێرەوە دەست پێدەکات

how do you take seventh- and eighth-graders to a talk about genocide

چۆن وا منداڵی پۆلی ٧ و ٨ .سەبارەت بە جینۆساید قسەبکەن

and deal with the subject in a way

بە شێوازێک قسە بکەن

that is responsible and respectful,

،کە بەرپرسیار و ڕێزدار بێت

and they know what to do with it.

.و دەزانن لەسەر ئەوە چی قسە بکەن

And so we chose to look at Paul Rusesabagina

ئێمە بریارماندا سەیری پاول رەسێسابگینە بکەین

as an example of a gentleman

وەک نمونەی پیاوێکی قارەمان

who singularly used his life to do something positive.

بەتەنھا ژیانی خۆی بۆ شتێکی ئەرێنەیی تەرخان کرد

I then challenged the kids to identify

دواتر هانمدان بۆ دۆزینەوە

someone in their own life, or in their own story, or in their own world,

کەس لەژیانیاندا، لە چیرۆکەکانیان ،یان لە جیھانی خۆیان

that they could identify that had done a similar thing.

.کە وەک پاوڵ هەمان کاریان کردووە

I asked them to produce a little movie about it.

ووتم فیلمێکی بچووک بۆ ئەم بابەتە دروست بکەن

It's the first time we'd done this.

.ئەوە یەکەم جار بوو ئەوە بکەین

Nobody really knew how to make these little movies on the computer,

،کەسیان نەیاندەزانی کورتە فلیمێک دروست بکەن

but they were into it. And I asked them to put their own voice over it.

بەڵام ویستیان هەبوو داوام لێکردن کە خۆییان لە ڤیدیۆکە قسە بکەن

It was the most awesome moment of revelation

چرکە ساتێکی شۆڕشی گرنگ بوو

کاتێک داوا لە منداڵان کرا قسە بکەن

that when you ask kids to use their own voice

and ask them to speak for themselves,

.داوایان لێ دەکەی سەبارەت بە خۆییان قسە بکەن

what they're willing to share.

.دەیانەوێت چی بڵێن

The last question of the assignment is:

:دوا پرسیاری تاقیکردنەوەکە

how do you plan to use your life

چۆن پیلانەکانت لە ژیانت بەکاردێنی

to positively impact other people?

کاریگەری ئەرێنی لەسەر خەڵکانی تر ھەیە؟

The things that kids will say

ئەو شتانەی کە منداڵان دەیلێن

when you ask them and take the time to listen

کاتێک پرسیاریان لێ دەکەیت .کات بۆ گوێگرتن تەرخان دەکەیت

is extraordinary.

Fast-forward to Pennsylvania, where I find myself today.

بۆ پەنسلیڤیا ئەو .شوێنەی ئەمرۆ خۆم تێدا دۆزیوەتەوە

I teach at the Science Leadership Academy,

،لە ئەکادیمیایی زانستی سەرکردایەتی مامۆستام

which is a partnership school between the Franklin Institute

کە ھاوبەشە لەگەل پەیمانگای فرانکلین

and the school district of Philadelphia.

.ھەروەھا قوتابخانەکەمان لە فیلەفیایە

We are a nine through 12 public school,

نۆیەم قوتابخانەین لە کۆی ١٢ ،قوتابخانەی گشتی

but we do school quite differently.

I moved there primarily

to be part of a learning environment

that validated the way that I knew that kids learned,

and that really wanted to investigate

what was possible

when you are willing to let go

of some of the paradigms of the past,

of information scarcity when my grandmother was in school

and when my father was in school and even when I was in school,

and to a moment when we have information surplus.

So what do you do when the information is all around you?

کەواتە تۆ چیدەکەیت کە لەو کاتە زانیاریەکان لە دەوروبەرتن؟

Why do you have kids come to school

چ پێویست دەکات مناڵەکان بچنە خوێندنگە

if they no longer have to come there to get the information?

گەر چیتر پێویستیان بە وەرگرتنی زانیاری نەبێت؟

In Philadelphia we have a one-to-one laptop program,

لە فیلادیلفیا فێرخواز .لە هێنانە ژوورەوەی لاپتۆپەکەی ئازادە

so the kids are bringing in laptops with them everyday,

کەواتە منداڵەکان لاپتۆپی خۆیان .ڕۆژانە بۆ خوێندنگە دەهێنن

taking them home, getting access to information.

لەگەڵ خۆیان دەیبەنەوەم ماڵەوە .دەتوانن زانیاری دەست بخەن

And here's the thing that you need to get comfortable with

لێرە چەند شتێک ھەیە کە تۆ پێویستە لەگەڵی ئاسودەبیت

when you've given the tool

کاتێک کەلوپەلەکانیان دراوەتێ

to acquire information to students,

،بۆ دەستەبەرکردنی زانیاری بۆ خوێندکاران

is that you have to be comfortable with this idea

ئەوەیە دەبێت ئاسودەبیت لەگەل ئەم بیرۆکانە

of allowing kids to fail

لە رێگە پێدانی منداڵ کە دەرنەچێت

as part of the learning process.

.وەک بەشێک لە پرۆسەی خوێندن

We deal right now in the educational landscape

ئێستا ئێمە باسی پرۆسەی فێربوون دەکەین

with an infatuation

بە سەرسامیەوە

with the culture of one right answer

"لە کەلتوری "وەڵامی ڕاست

that can be properly bubbled on the average multiple choice test,

لە تاقیکردنەوەکان دەکرێت ،پرسیاری هەڵبژاردن بەکاربهێنین

and I am here to share with you:

:من لێرەم تا پێتان رڕابگەیەنم

it is not learning.

.ئەوە فێربوون نییە

That is the absolute wrong thing to ask,

،ئەم ئیشە بەتەواوی ھەڵەیە

to tell kids to never be wrong.

.نابێت بە منداڵەکان بلێی ھەرگیز ھەڵە نەکەن

To ask them to always have the right answer

ھەمیشە داوای وەڵامی ڕاستیان لێبکەی

doesn't allow them to learn.

.ئەمە دەبێت ڕێگر لە بەردەم فێربوونیان

So we did this project,

،ئەو پرۆژەمان کرد

and this is one of the artifacts of the project.

ئەمە یەکێکە لە بەرھەمە .دەستکردەکانی نێو پرۆژەکە

I almost never show them off

هەرگیز پێشانم نەدراون

because of the issue of the idea of failure.

.بەهۆی بیرۆکەی شکست هێنان

My students produced these info-graphics

قوتابیەکانم ئەم ھێلکاریە پڕ .زانیاریەیان پێشکەشکرد

as a result of a unit that we decided to do at the end of the year

لە ئەنجامدا ئەو بەشەی بۆ کۆتایی ساڵمان جێھێشتبوو

responding to the oil spill.

.کاردانەوەکان دژی ڕژانی نەوت

I asked them to take the examples that we were seeing

داوام لێکردن کە نموونەم بدەنێ لەسەر ئەوەی بینیویانە

of the info-graphics that existed

ئەو ئینفۆگرافیکانە کە بەردەست بوون

in a lot of mass media,

،لەنێو میدیایی دیجیتەڵیدا

and take a look at what were the interesting components of it,

سەیرێکی بکە و بزانە ،چ شتێک لەم نێوانەدا زۆر سەرنجراکێشە

and produce one for themselves

of a different man-made disaster from American history.

And they had certain criteria to do it.

They were a little uncomfortable with it,

،کەمێک نارەحەت بوو

because we'd never done this before, and they didn't know exactly how to do it.

ھەرگیز ئەوەمان نەکردبوو ،نەیاندەزانی چی بکەن

They can talk -- they're very smooth,

دەتوانن قسەبکەن، زۆر نەرمنن وھێمنن

and they can write very, very well,

دەتوانن زۆر بەباشی بنوسن

but asking them to communicate ideas in a different way

بەڵام داوایان لێبکەیت بەڕێگەییەکی جیاواز ئایدیاکانیان دەرببرن

was a little uncomfortable for them.

.کەمێکیش نارەحەت بوو

But I gave them the room to just do the thing.

.ژورێکم بۆ ئەنجامدانی ئەم کارە پێیان دا

Go create. Go figure it out.

.بڕۆ و بیر بکەوە. بڕۆ و بزانە چۆنە

Let's see what we can do.

.با بزانین چ دەکەین

And the student that persistently

فێرخوازەکان بە بەردەوامی

turns out the best visual product did not disappoint.

بۆم بەدەر کەوت کە .بەهەمەکەیان شکستخواردوو نەبوو

This was done in like two or three days.

لەماوەی تەنها ٢یا ٣ .رۆژدا ئەمەیان ئەنجامدا

And this is the work of the student that consistently did it.

.ئەمەی پشتم یەکێک لە کارەکانە

And when I sat the students down, I said, "Who's got the best one?"

کاتێک فێرخوازەکان دادەنیشن، لێیان دەپرسم کامتان باشترینن؟

And they immediately went, "There it is."

ڕاستەوخۆ پەنجە درێژ دەکەن و دەڵێن "ئەمە"

Didn't read anything. "There it is."

هیچیان نەخوێندۆتەوە. تەنها دەڵێن "ئەمە"

And I said, "Well what makes it great?"

منیش گوتم ،ئایا چ شتێکی ئەمە نایابە؟

And they're like, "Oh, the design's good, and he's using good color.

دەڵێن: "دیزاینەکە جوانە و ".ڕەنگەکانی سەرنج ڕاکێشن

And there's some ... " And they went through all that we processed out loud.

ئەوە و ئەوەش. سەیری گشت .کارە بەرچاوەکانی ئێمەیان کرد

And I said, "Go read it."

".منیش پێم گوتن "فەرموو بیخوێننەوە

And they're like, "Oh, that one wasn't so awesome."

".ئەوانش گوتیان "ئۆھ ،ئەمەیان زۆر سەرنجراکێش نەبوو

And then we went to another one --

...و ئێمە چوینە شوێنێکی تر

it didn't have great visuals, but it had great information --

دیمەنێکی جوانی نەبوو بەڵام زانیاریەکی هەبوو

and spent an hour talking about the learning process,

کاتژمێرێکمان دەربارەی .قۆناغە جیاوازەکانی فێربوون بەسەربرد

because it wasn't about whether or not it was perfect,

،چونکە سەبارەت بە باش و خراپی نەبوو

or whether or not it was what I could create.

.یان ئایا من دەتوانم چی دروست بکەم

It asked them to create for themselves,

داوایان لێ کردن ،کە بۆخۆیان شت بۆ خۆیان دروست بکەن

and it allowed them to fail,

،ھەروەھا رێگەیان پێدرا کە شکست بهێنن

process, learn from.

ئێمە لە شکست شت فێردەبین

And when we do another round of this in my class this year,

ساڵێکیتر ئەم کارە لە پۆلەکەمان دووبارە دەکەینەوە

they will do better this time,

،ئەم جارە باشتر دەبن

because learning

چونکە لە پرۆسەی خوێندن

has to include an amount of failure,

دەبێت ڕێگە بە فێرخواز بدرێت ،کە جار جار شکست بهێنێت

because failure is instructional

شکست ئامرازێکی بنیاتنەرە

in the process.

There are a million pictures

that I could click through here,

and had to choose carefully -- this is one of my favorites --

of what learning can look like

in a landscape where we let go of the idea

that kids have to come to school to get the information,

but instead, ask them what they can do with it.

بەڵام دەبێت لێیان بپرسین .چی لەم زانیاریانە دەکەن

Ask them really interesting questions.

.پرسیاری سەرنجراکێش لە منداڵەکان بکەن

They will not disappoint.

.بێ ئومێد نابن

Ask them to go to places,

،وایان لێبکەن بچنە شوێنان

to see things for themselves,

،بۆ بینینی شتەکان بە چاوی خۆیان

to actually experience the learning,

،بۆ ئەوەی ئەزموون لەم فێربوونە وەربگرن

to play, to inquire.

.تا یاری بکەن، پرسیار بکەن

This is one of my favorite photos,

because this was taken on Tuesday,

لەبەر ئەوەی لە رۆژی سێشەمە گیراوە

when I asked the students to go to the polls.

This is Robbie, and this was his first day of voting,

.ئەمە ڕۆبیە ئەمە یەکەم رۆژی دەنگ دانە

and he wanted to share that with everybody and do that.

.ویستی لەگەل ھەمووان بەژداری پێبکات

But this is learning too,

،بەلام ئەمەش فێربوونە

because we asked them to go out into real spaces.

چونکە داوامان لێکردن .بچنە دەرەوە بۆ شوێنە خۆشەکان

The main point

خاڵی سەرەکی

is that, if we continue to look at education

ئەوەیە ئەگەر ئێمە بەردەوام پێمان وا بێت فێربوون بریتیە لە

as if it's about coming to school

:بەردەوام هاتن بۆ فێرگە بێت

to get the information

بۆ وەرگرتنی زانیاری

and not about experiential learning,

،نەک وەرگتنی ئەزموون لە فێربوون

empowering student voice and embracing failure,

ھاندانی خوێنکاران و قایلبوون ،بە شکستەکانیان

ئێمە لە ئامانجی سەرەکی فێربوون دوور دەکەوینەوە و

we're missing the mark.

And everything that everybody is talking about today

.گشت ئەم بابەتانەی ئەمرۆ باسیان دەکەین

isn't possible if we keep having an educational system

ئایا گونجاو نییە ئەگەر سیستەمێکی پەروەردەیی

that does not value these qualities,

،کەوا هەڵسەنگاند لەسەر ئەم بنەمایانە ناکات

چونکە بە تاقیکردنەوەکان ،ئامانجی فێربوون ناپێکین

because we won't get there with a standardized test,

and we won't get there with a culture of one right answer.

یەک وەڵامی ڕاست .ئامانجی فێربوون ناپێکێت

We know how to do this better,

،ئێمە دەزانین چۆن کارەکە باشتر بکەین

and it's time to do better.
