No one will ever pay you what you're worth.

ئەوان بە پێی بیرکردنەوەیان

clearly defining and communicating your value are essential

to being paid well for your excellence.

Anyone here want to be paid well?

OK, good,

then this talk is for everyone.

It's got universal applicability.

It's true if you're a business owner, if you're an employee,

ئێستا، باسی ئەمە دەکەین لە ڕوانگەی ژنە بازرگانێکەوە،

چونکە من چاودێری ئەوەم دەکرد کە ئافرەتان بێ بایەخترن لە چاو پیاوان.

if you're a job seeker.

It's true if you're a man or a woman.

Now, I approach this today through the lens of the woman business owner,

because in my work I've observed that women underprice more so than men.

بە پێی نوسینگەی ئاماری کار بێت،

The gender wage gap is a well-traveled narrative in this country.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,

a woman employee earns just 83 cents for every dollar a man earns.

What may surprise you

is that this trend continues even into the entrepreneurial sphere.

A woman business owner earns just 80 cents for every dollar a man earns.

In my work, I've often heard women express

that they're uncomfortable communicating their value,

"من نامەوێت باسی خۆم بکەم."

especially early on in business ownership.

"نامەوێت باسی دەستکەوتەکانم بکەم."

They say things like,

"I don't like to toot my own horn."

"I'd rather let the work speak for itself."

و پێموایە جیاوازی ٢٠ سەنت دروست دەکات بۆ ئافرەت لە هەر دۆلارێکدا.

"I don't like to sing my own praises."

I hear very different narratives in working with male business owners,

حەز دەکەم چیرۆکی کۆمپانیاییەکی ڕاوێژکاریتان پێ بڵێم

and I think this difference is costing women 20 cents on the dollar.

I'd like to tell you the story of a consulting firm

that helps their clients dramatically improve their profitability.

That company is my company.

After my first year in business, I saw the profit increases

that my clients were realizing in working with me,

and I realized that I needed to reevaluate my pricing.

I was really underpriced relative to the value I was delivering.

It's hard for me to admit to you, because I'm a pricing consultant.

It's what I do.

I help companies price for value.

and so I sat down to evaluate my pricing, evaluate my value,

and I did that by asking key value questions.

What are my clients' needs and how do I meet them?

What is my unique skill set that makes me better qualified to serve my clients?

What do I do that no one else does?

و ئەو بەهایەشم ناساند کە بەشداربووانم دەستیان دەکەوێت بە کاردکردن لەگەڵ من،

What problems do I solve for clients?

What value do I add?

بەرزبوونەوەیانم لە وەبەرهێناندا بینی،

و بۆیە بە پێویستم زانی نرخەکانم دووهێندە بکەم،

I answered these questions

and defined the value that my clients get from working with me,

دوو هێندە.

ئێستا، دان بەوەدا دەنێم، ئەوە منی ترساند.

calculated their return on investment,

and what I saw was that I needed to double my price,

با بڵێم من شارەزام لەم بوارە، بەڵام من چارەسەر نیم.

double it.

Now, I confess to you, this terrified me.

دەمزانی بەهاکە لەوێیە.

I'm supposed to be the expert in this, but I'm not cured.

I knew the value was there.

I was convinced the value was there,

تۆ پێکەنیناویت."

and I was still scared out of my wits.

بەڕاستی شایەنی ئەوە بووم؟

What if nobody would pay me that?

کارەکەم نا، سەیربکە، بەڵام من.

What if clients said, "That's ridiculous.

You're ridiculous."

شایەنی ئەوە بووم؟

Was I really worth that?

من دایکی دوو کچی جوانی بچکۆلانەم کە پشت بە من دەبەستن.

Not my work, mind you, but me.

من دایکێکی تەنهام.

چی ئەگەر کارەکەم شکست بێنێت؟

Was I worth that?

چی ئەگەر شکست بهێنم؟

I'm the mother of two beautiful little girls who depend upon me.

بەڵام دەزانم چۆن چارەسەری خۆم بکەم،

I'm a single mom.

ئەو چارەسەری کە من دەیدەم بە بە بەشداربووانم.

What if my business fails?

What if I fail?

من ئەرکەکەم تەواو کردووە.

دەمزانی کە لەوێ بەهایەک هەیە.

But I know how to take my own medicine,

کاتێک کە هەڵ هاتە پێش،

the medicine that I prescribe to my clients.

داواکارییەکانم ئامادەکرد بە نرخی بەرزترەوە

I had done the homework.

و بۆم ناردن

I knew the value was there.

و بەهاکانم پشاندان.

So when prospects came,

چیرۆکەکە چۆن کۆتایی دێت؟

I prepared the proposals with the new higher pricing

بەشداربووان بەردەوام بوون لە پەسندکردنم

and sent them out

دەگەڕانەوە بۆم و پێشنیاریان دەکردم، هێشتا لێرەم.

and communicated the value.

How's the story end?

و باسی ئەم چیرۆکە دەکەم

چونکە گومان و ترس سروشتی و ئاسایین.

Clients continued to hire me

and refer me and recommend me, and I'm still here.

بەڵام پێناسەی بەهاکانمان ناکەن،

و نابێت سنوور بۆ تواناکانمان دابنێن.

And I share this story

because doubts and fears are natural and normal.

حەز دەکەم چیرۆکێکی تر باس بکەم،

But they don't define our value,

دەربارەی ژنێک کە فێر بووە چۆن باسی بەهاکانی بکات

and they shouldn't limit our earning potential.

و حۆیی دۆزیەوە.

بەڕێوەبەری کۆمپانیاییەکی سەرکوتووی گەشەپێدانی وێبە

I'd like to share another story,

و چەندین کەس دادەمەزرێنێت.

about a woman who learned to communicate her value

کاتێک کە دەستی بە کارەکەی کرد و چەند ساڵێک دواتر،

and found her own voice.

She runs a successful web development company

گوتی، "کۆمپانیایەکی بچوکی نەخشاندنی وێبم هەیە"

and employs several people.

When she first started her firm and for several years thereafter,

"کۆمپانیاییەکی بچوکی نەخشاندنم هەیە."

she would say, "I have a little web design company."

بەهای کۆمپانیاکەی دابەزاند لە چاوی کڕیارە بەردەوامەکانی،

She'd actually use those words with clients.

"I have a little web design company."

و خۆشی کەم کردەوە.

In this and in many other small ways,

کاریگەری کردە سەر تواناکانی بۆ بە دەست هێنانی ئەوەی شایەنییەتی.

she was diminishing her company in the eyes of prospects and clients,

پێموایە شێوازی قسەکردنی و ڕەفتاری

and diminishing herself.

دەرخەری ئەوەیە کە باوەڕی نییە کە

It was really impacting her ability to earn what she was worth.

بەهایەکی زۆر پێشکەش دەکات.

I believe her language and her style

لە قسەکانی دا، کردارییانە وازی لە خزمەتگوزارییەکانی هێنا.

communicated that she didn't believe

و گەشتەکەی دەستپێکرد

she had much value to offer.

In her own words, she was practically giving her services away.

And so she began her journey

to take responsibility for communicating value to clients

One thing I shared with her

is that it's so important

یان دراوسێکەت کە نوکتەی خۆش دەکات ئەگەر ئەمە لە تۆدا ڕەنگ ناداتەوە.

to find your own voice,

a voice that's authentic and true to you.

Don't try to channel your sister-in-law just because she's a great salesperson

واز لەم بیرۆکەیە بێنە کە بەسەر شانوباڵی خۆتدا بڵێت.

لە بەشەکانی تردا وا بیر بکەوە.

or your neighbor who tells a great joke if that's not who you are.

جەخت بکە سەر خزمەتکردن و زیاد کردنی بەها، و ئەمەش وەکو بەخۆدا هەڵگوتن نییە.

Give up this notion that it's tooting your own horn.

چیت پێخۆشە لەوەی کە دەیکەیت؟

Make it about the other party.

چی سەرنجت ڕادەکێشێت لە کارەکەت؟

Focus on serving and adding value, and it won't feel like bragging.

ئەگەر پەیوەستی بکەیەت بەمەوە، باسکردنی بەهاکانت سروشتییانە پەیدا دەبن.

What do you love about what you do?

What excites you about the work that you do?

ئەو گەشە بە شێوازەکەی دەدات،

پەیامەکەی دۆزییەوە و گۆڕی.

If you connect with that, communicating your value will come naturally.

چیتر خۆی وەک کۆمپانیایەکی بچوکی نەخشاندن نەدەناساند.

So she embraced her natural style,

ئەو وزە و هێزێکی زۆری لە ناساندنی پەیامەکەی دەست دەخست.

found her voice and changed her message.

For one thing, she stopped calling herself a little web design company.

ئێستا سێ ئەوەندەی ئەو کات کار لەسەر نەخشاندن دەکات

She really found a lot of strength and power in communicating her message.

و بازرگانییەکەی پێشدەکەوێت.

باسی دوایین کۆبونەوە و

قسەی ڕەق و کڕیاڕی خراپی بۆ کردم

She's now charging three times as much for web design,

کە داوای چاوپێکەوتنی دەکرد سەبارەت بە دروستکردنی باشترین بزوێنەری گەڕان.

and her business is growing.

She told me about a recent meeting

لە کۆتا ڕۆژەکاندا گوتی،

with a gruff and sometimes difficult client

دەکرا بە ڕاستی چاوپێکەوتنێکی مەترسیدار بووبا بۆی،

who had called a meeting questioning progress on search engine optimization.

بەڵام بیرکردنەوەی جیاواز بوو.

گوتی، زانیارییەکانی ئامادە کردبوو، لەگەڵ کڕیارەکە دانیشت،

She said in the old days,

that would have been a really intimidating meeting for her,

گوتی ئەمە دەربارەی من نییە، ئەمە بابەتێکی کەسی نییە،

but her mindset was different.

ئەمە دەربارەی کڕیارەکەیە.

She said, she prepared the information, sat down with the client,

باسی داتاکانی بۆیان کرد ، باسی ژمارەکانی بۆیان کرد،

بە دەنگ و شێوازی خۆی ئاڕاستە و پڕۆسەکەی بۆیان خستە ڕوو ،

said this isn't about me, it's not personal,

it's about the client.

بەڵام زۆر بە ڕاشکاوانە گوتی، "ئێمە ئەوەمان بۆ کردوویت."

She took them through the data, through the numbers,

کڕیارەکە هەستا و تێبینییەکەی وەرگرت، گوتی، "باشە، تێگەیشتم."

laid out the trends and the progress in her own voice and in her own way,

لە باسکردنی ئەم کۆبونەوەیەدا، گوتی،

but very directly said, "Here's what we've done for you."

"هەستم بە ترس یان شڵەژان

The client sat up and took notice, and said, "OK, I got it."

یان بچوکی نەکرد،

And she said in describing that meeting,

کە پێشتر هەستم پێ دەکردن.

"I didn't feel scared or panicky

لە جیاتی ئەوە گوتم، "باشە، تێگەیشتم

or small,

دەزانم کە چی دەکەم. باوەڕم بە خۆم هەیە."

which is how I used to feel.

Instead I feel like, 'OK, I got this.

بوون بە خاوەن بەهایەکی گونجاو زۆر گرنگە.

دەتوانی لەم چیرۆکەوە فێریبیت.

I know what I'm doing. I'm confident.'"

کاریگەری ئەمە زیاترە لە چاو دەستکەوتی دارایی

لە ناو جیهانی ڕێزگرتنی خۆت و باوەڕ بەخۆبوون.

Being properly valued is so important.

You can hear in this story

that the implications range far beyond just finances

من ئەمڕۆ دوو چیرۆکم گێڕایەوە، دانەیەک لە بارەی ناسینی بەهاکانمان

into the realm of self-respect and self-confidence.

ئەوەی تریش لە بارەی پشاندانی بەهاکانمان

ئەمەش دوو شتن بۆ تێگەیشتن لە بەدەست هێنانی تەواوەتی.

Today I've told two stories, one about defining our value

ئەمەش هاوسەنگییە.

and the other about communicating our value,

ئەگەر تۆ ئەمڕۆ دانیشتووی

and these are the two elements to realizing our full earning potential.

و ئەو بەهایەت پێ نەدرابێت کە شایەنیت،

پێمخۆشە بانگهێشتت بکەم بۆ ئەم هاوسەنگییە.

That's the equation.

And if you're sitting in the audience today

تەنها خەیاڵی ئەوە بکە کە ژیان چۆن دەبوو،

دەمانتوانی چەند زیاتر بکەین،

and you're not being paid what you're worth,

دەمانتوانی چەند زیاتر بگەڕێنینەوە،

I'd like to welcome you into this equation.

دەمانتوانی چەند زیاتر پلان بۆ داهاتوو دابنێین،

Just imagine what life could be like,

ئێمە چەندە هەستمان بە ڕێز و پەسندی دەکرد

how much more we could do,

how much more we could give back,

ئەگەر توانیبامان هەموو کارەکانمان بەدەست بهێنین،

how much more we could plan for the future,

گشت بەهاکانمان بۆ دەربکەوێ.

how validated and respected we would feel

کەس وەکو ئەوەی شایەنی نرخت پێ نادات.

if we could earn our full potential,

ئەوان بە پێی بیرکردنەوەیان نرخ بۆ تۆ دادەنێن.

realize our full value.

کۆنتڕۆڵی بیرکردنەوەیان دەکەیت.

سوپاس بۆ ئێوە.

No one will ever pay you what you're worth.
