Every day, I listen to harrowing stories of people fleeing for their lives,

ڕۆژانه‌، گوێ له‌ چیڕۆكی ترسناكی ئه‌و كه‌سانه‌ ده‌گرم كه‌ له‌پێناو ژیانیان

across dangerous borders and unfriendly seas.

ڕاده‌كه‌ن، به‌نێو سنووره‌ مه‌ترسیدار و ده‌ریا خراپه‌كان،

But there's one story that keeps me awake at night,

به‌ڵام چیڕۆكێك هه‌یه‌ كه‌ شه‌وانه‌ به‌ ئاگایی ده‌مهێڵێته‌وه‌،

and it's about Doaa.

ئەویش له‌باره‌ی دوعایه‌.

A Syrian refugee, 19 years old,

په‌نابه‌رێكی سووری، ته‌مه‌ن ١٩ ساڵ،

she was living a grinding existence in Egypt working day wages.

لە ژیانێكی زۆردارانه‌ له‌ میسڕ ده‌ژیا به‌ كرێی ڕۆژانه‌.

Her dad was constantly thinking of his thriving business back in Syria

باوكی به‌رده‌وام بیری له‌ كاره‌كه‌ی له‌ سوریا خۆی ده‌كرده‌وه‌

that had been blown to pieces by a bomb.

كه‌ به‌هۆی بۆمبه‌وه‌ تێكشكێنرابوو.

And the war that drove them there was still raging in its fourth year.

ئه‌و جه‌نگه‌ی پەڵكێشی كردبوون بۆ ئه‌وێ له‌ ساڵی چواره‌می هێشتا کۆتایی پێ نەهاتبوو.

And the community that once welcomed them there

و ئه‌و كۆمه‌ڵگه‌یه‌ش كه‌ جارێك پێشوازی لێكردبوون

had become weary of them.

لێیان وه‌ڕس ببوو.

And one day, men on motorcycles tried to kidnap her.

ڕۆژێكیان، چه‌ند پیاوێك له‌سه‌ر ماتۆڕسكیل هه‌وڵیاندا بیڕفێنن.

Once an aspiring student thinking only of her future,

ئه‌و قوتابیه‌ به‌رزخوازه‌ی ڕۆژێك له‌ ڕۆژان ته‌نیا بیری له‌ داهاتووی ده‌كرده‌وه‌،

now she was scared all the time.

ئێستا هه‌موو كاتێك ترساو بوو.

But she was also full of hope,

به‌ڵام پڕ هیواش بوو،

because she was in love with a fellow Syrian refugee named Bassem.

چونكه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ په‌نابه‌رێكی هاوه‌ڵی سووری به‌ناوی باسم كه‌وتبووه‌ داوی خۆشه‌ویستی.

Bassem was also struggling in Egypt, and he said to Doaa,

باسمیش له‌ میسڕ هه‌وڵی ده‌دا، و به‌ دوعای گوت،

"Let's go to Europe; seek asylum, safety.

" با بچینه‌ ئه‌وروپا، به‌دوای په‌ناگه‌، پارێزاروی بگه‌ڕێین.

I will work, you can study -- the promise of a new life."

من كارده‌كه‌م، تۆ ده‌توانیت بخوێنیت-- به‌ڵێنی ژیانێكی نوێ."

And he asked her father for her hand in marriage.

و خوازبێنی له‌ باوكی كرد.

But they knew to get to Europe they had to risk their lives,

به‌ڵام ئه‌وان ده‌یانزانی بۆ گه‌یشتن به‌ ئه‌وروپا ده‌بوو ژیانیان بخه‌نه‌ مه‌ترسی،

traveling across the Mediterranean Sea,

گه‌شتكردن به‌ناو ده‌ریای ناوه‌ڕاست،

putting their hands in smugglers', notorious for their cruelty.

خۆخستنه‌ ژێر ده‌ستی ئه‌و قاچاخچیانه‌ی به‌ دڕنده‌یی به‌ناوبانگن.

And Doaa was terrified of the water.

و دوعا له‌ ئاو ده‌ترسا.

She always had been. She never learned to swim.

هه‌میشه‌ وا بووه‌. هه‌رگیز فێری مه‌له‌وانی نه‌ببوو.

It was August that year, and already 2,000 people had died

مانگی ئابی ئه‌و ساڵه‌ بوو، پێشتر ٢٠٠٠ كه‌س مردبوون

trying to cross the Mediterranean,

له‌ هه‌وڵی په‌ڕینه‌وه‌ له‌ ده‌ریای ناوه‌ڕاست،

but Doaa knew of a friend who had made it all the way to Northern Europe,

به‌ڵام دوعا له‌ هاوڕێیه‌كی خۆی زانیبوو كه‌ توانیبووی بگاته‌ باكووری ئه‌وروپا،

and she thought, "Maybe we can, too."

وای بیركرده‌وه‌، "له‌وانه‌یه‌ ئێمه‌ش بتوانین."

So she asked her parents if they could go,

بۆیه‌ داوای له‌ خێزانه‌كه‌ی كرد گه‌ر ڕێیان بده‌ن بڕۆن،

and after a painful discussion, they consented,

دوای مشتومڕێكی به‌ئازار، ڕازیبوون.

and Bassem paid his entire life savings -- 2,500 dollars each --

و باسم هه‌موو سەرمایه‌كه‌ی-- ٢٥٠٠ دۆلار بۆ هه‌ر نه‌فه‌رێك بوو--

to the smugglers.

دایه‌ ده‌ستی قاچاخچییه‌كان.

It was a Saturday morning when the call came,

به‌یانییه‌كی ڕۆژی شه‌ممه‌ بوو كاتێك په‌یوه‌ندیی هات،

and they were taken by bus to a beach, hundreds of people on the beach.

به‌ پاس بردران بۆ كه‌نارێك، سه‌دان كه‌س له‌سه‌ر كه‌ناره‌كه‌ن.

They were taken then by small boats onto an old fishing boat,

دواتر به‌ به‌له‌می بچووك بۆ سه‌ر به‌له‌مێكی ماسی گرتن هێنران،

500 of them crammed onto that boat,

٥٠٠یان به‌ پاله‌په‌ستۆ خرانه‌ ناو ئه‌و به‌له‌مه‌،

300 below, [200] above.

٣٠٠ له‌ ژێره‌وه‌، ٢٠٠ له‌سه‌ره‌وه‌.

There were Syrians, Palestinians, Africans, Muslims and Christians,

سووریی، فه‌ڵه‌ستینی، ئه‌فریقی، موسڵمان و مه‌سیحی تیدابوو،

100 children, including Sandra -- little Sandra, six years old --

١٠٠ منداڵ، له‌نێویاندا ساندرا-- ساندرای بچووك، شه‌ش ساڵان--

and Masa, 18 months.

و ماسا، ١٨ مانگ،

There were families on that boat, crammed together shoulder to shoulder,

له‌سه‌ر ئه‌و به‌له‌مه‌ خیزان هه‌بوون، شانیان له‌ شان په‌ستێورابوو،

feet to feet.

پێ به‌ پێ.

Doaa was sitting with her legs crammed up to her chest,

دوعا وا دانیشتبوو كه‌ پێیه‌كانی بۆ سینگی په‌ستێنرابوو،

Bassem holding her hand.

باسم ده‌ستی گرتبوو.

Day two on the water, they were sick with worry

ڕۆژی دووه‌م له‌ ناو ئاو، نه‌خۆش و نیگه‌ران بوون

and sick to their stomachs from the rough sea.

دڵیان تێكهه‌ڵده‌هات له‌به‌ر شه‌پۆڵه‌ ترسناكه‌كانی ده‌ریا.

Day three, Doaa had a premonition.

ڕۆژی سێ، دوعا دڵی خه‌به‌ری دابوو.

And she said to Bassem, "I fear we're not going to make it.

به‌ باسمی گوت، "ده‌ترسم نه‌گه‌ین.

I fear the boat is going to sink."

ده‌ترسم به‌له‌مه‌كه‌ نقووم ببێت."

And Bassem said to her, "Please be patient.

و باسم پێی گوت، "تكایه‌ ئارام به‌.

We will make it to Sweden, we will get married

ده‌گه‌ینه‌ سوید، هاوسه‌رگیریی ده‌كه‌ین

and we will have a future."

و داهاتووێكمان ده‌بێت."

Day four, the passengers were getting agitated.

ڕۆژی چوار، سه‌رنشینه‌كان بێزار ده‌بوون.

They asked the captain, "When will we get there?"

پرسیاریان له‌ كاپتنه‌كه‌ كرد، "كه‌ی ده‌گه‌ینه‌ ئه‌وێ؟"

He told them to shut up, and he insulted them.

ئه‌و پێی گوتن کە ده‌میان داخه‌ن، و ڕیسوای كردن.

He said, "In 16 hours we will reach the shores of Italy."

گوتی، "له‌ ١٦ كاتژمێردا ده‌گه‌ینه‌ كه‌ناراوه‌كانی ئیتاڵیا."

They were weak and weary.

بێهێز و نیگه‌ران بوون.

Soon they saw a boat approach -- a smaller boat, 10 men on board,

هه‌رزوو بینیان به‌له‌مێك نزیك ده‌بێته‌وه‌- به‌له‌مێكی بچووكتر، ١٠ پیاوی له‌سه‌ر بوو،

who started shouting at them, hurling insults,

كه‌ هاواریان به‌سه‌ردا ده‌كردن، جنێویان پێده‌دان،

throwing sticks, asking them to all disembark

داریان ڕاده‌وه‌شاند، داوایانكرد هه‌موویان دابه‌زن

and get on this smaller, more unseaworthy boat.

و بێنه‌ ناو ئه‌م به‌له‌مه‌ كه‌ به‌كه‌ڵكی گه‌شت نه‌ده‌هات.

The parents were terrified for their children,

خێزانه‌كان له‌به‌ر منداڵه‌كانیان ده‌ترسان،

and they collectively refused to disembark.

هه‌موویان به‌یه‌كه‌وه‌ ڕه‌تیان كرده‌وه‌ دابه‌زن.

So the boat sped away in anger,

بۆیه‌ به‌له‌مه‌كه‌ به‌ تووڕه‌یی به‌ خێرایی ڕۆیشت،

and a half an hour later, came back

نیو كاتژمێر دواتر، گه‌ڕایه‌وه‌

and started deliberately ramming a hole in the side of Doaa's boat,

به‌ ئه‌نقه‌ست كونی له لای كه‌شتییه‌كه‌ی دوعا ده‌كرد،

just below where she and Bassem were sitting.

له‌و شوێنه‌ی ئه‌و و باسم دانیشبوون.

And she heard how they yelled,

گوێی لێبوو چۆن هاواریان ده‌كرد،

"Let the fish eat your flesh!"

"با ماسییه‌كان گۆشتتان بخۆن!"

And they started laughing as the boat capsized and sank.

ده‌ستیان كرد به‌ پێكه‌نین هه‌ركه‌ به‌له‌مه‌كه‌ وه‌رگه‌ڕا و نقووم بوو.

The 300 people below deck were doomed.

ئه‌و ٣٠٠ كه‌سه‌ی له‌ خوار ڕووی كه‌شتییه‌كه‌ مه‌حكووم كران.

Doaa was holding on to the side of the boat as it sank,

دوعا خۆی به‌و لایه‌ی به‌له‌مه‌كه‌ گرتبوو كه‌ نقووم ده‌بوو،

and watched in horror as a small child was cut to pieces by the propeller.

به‌ تۆقاوییه‌وه‌سه‌یری ده‌كرد منداڵێكی بچووك به‌ په‌روانه‌كه‌ پارچه‌ پارچه‌ بوو.

Bassem said to her, "Please let go,

باسم پێی گوت، "تكایه‌ بڕۆ،

or you'll be swept in and the propeller will kill you, too."

ئه‌گه‌رنا ڕاده‌ماڵرێی و په‌روانه‌كه‌ تۆش ده‌كوژێت."

And remember -- she can't swim.

بیرتان بێت -- ناتوانێت مه‌له‌وانی بكات.

But she let go and she started moving her arms and her legs,

به‌ڵام ڕۆیشت و ده‌ستیكرد به‌ جووڵاندنی قۆڵ و لاقه‌كانی،

thinking, "This is swimming."

وایده‌زانی، "ئه‌مه‌ مه‌له‌كردنه‌."

And miraculously, Bassem found a life ring.

به‌شێوه‌یه‌كی موعجیزه‌ئاسا، باسم ئه‌ڵقه‌یه‌كی دۆزییه‌وه‌.

It was one of those child's rings

یه‌كێك له‌و ئه‌ڵقانه‌ی منداڵ بوو

that they use to play in swimming pools and on calm seas.

كه‌ به‌كاری ده‌هێنن له‌ حه‌وزی مه‌له‌وانی و ده‌ریای ئارامدا.

And Doaa climbed onto the ring,

و دوعا سه‌ركه‌وته‌ سه‌ر ئه‌ڵقه‌كه‌،

her arms and her legs dangling by the side.

قۆڵ و قاچه‌كانی له‌ ته‌نیشته‌وه‌ گیریان خواردبوو.

Bassem was a good swimmer,

باسم مه‌له‌وانێكی باش بوو،

so he held her hand and tread water.

ده‌ستی گرت و به‌ ئاوه‌كه‌دا رۆیشت.

Around them there were corpses.

له‌ ده‌وریان ته‌رم هه‌بوو.

Around 100 people survived initially,

سه‌ره‌تا نزیكه‌ی ١٠٠ كه‌س ده‌ربازیان بوو،

and they started coming together in groups, praying for rescue.

به‌ كۆمه‌ڵ كۆمه‌ڵ كۆبوونه‌وه‌، بۆ ڕزگاربوون ده‌پاڕانه‌وه‌.

But when a day went by and no one came,

به‌ڵام كه‌ ڕۆژێك تێپه‌ڕی و كه‌س نه‌هات،

some people gave up hope,

هه‌ندێكیان بێ هیوا بوون،

and Doaa and Bassem watched

دوعا و باسم سه‌یریان ده‌كرد

as men in the distance took their life vests off and sank into the water.

كه‌ هه‌ندێك پیاو چاكه‌تی ڕزگاركردنیان فڕێدا و نقووم بوونه‌ ناو ئاوه‌كه‌.

One man approached them with a small baby perched on his shoulder,

پیاوێك لێیان نزیك بووه‌وه‌ به‌ خۆی و منداڵێكی بچووك به‌ شانییه‌وه‌،

nine months old -- Malek.

مالیكی نۆ مانگی.

He was holding onto a gas canister to stay afloat, and he said to them,

به‌ قوتوویه‌كی گازی خۆی گرتبوو تا له‌سه‌ر ئاو بمێنێته‌وه‌، و پێیانی گوت،

"I fear I am not going to survive.

"ده‌ترسم ڕزگارم نه‌بێت.

I'm too weak. I don't have the courage anymore."

زۆر بێهێزم، چیتر ئازایه‌تیم نییه‌."

And he handed little Malek over to Bassem and to Doaa,

مالیكی بچكۆلانه‌ی دایه‌ ده‌ستی باسم و دوعا،

and they perched her onto the life ring.

و ئه‌ویان خسته‌ سه‌ر ئه‌ڵقه‌ی ژیانه‌كه‌.

So now they were three, Doaa, Bassem and little Malek.

ئێستا ئه‌وان سێ كه‌س بوون، دوعا، باسم و مالیكی بچكۆڵانه‌.

And let me take a pause in this story right here

با لێره‌ له‌و چیڕۆكه‌ پشوویه‌ك وه‌رگرم

and ask the question:

ئه‌و پرسیاره‌ بكه‌م:

why do refugees like Doaa take these kinds of risks?

بۆچی په‌نابه‌ری وه‌كو دوعا خۆیان ده‌خه‌نه‌ ئه‌م جۆره‌ مه‌ترسیانه‌؟

Millions of refugees are living in exile, in limbo.

ملیۆنان په‌نابه‌ر له‌ تاراوگه‌ ده‌ژین، له‌ جیهانی بیرچوونه‌وه‌.

They're living in countries [fleeing] from a war that has been raging

له‌ وڵاتانێك ده‌ژین [هه‌ڵدێن] له‌و جه‌نگه‌ی هه‌ڵگیرساوه‌

for four years.

بۆ ماوه‌ی چوار ساڵه‌.

Even if they wanted to return, they can't.

ته‌نانه‌ت گه‌ر بیانه‌وێت بگه‌ڕێنه‌وه‌، ناتوانن.

Their homes, their businesses,

ماڵه‌كانیان، كاره‌كانیان،

their towns and their cities have been completely destroyed.

شارۆچكه‌ و شاره‌كانیان به‌ ته‌واوی خاپووركراوه‌.

This is a UNESCO World Heritage City,

ئه‌مه‌ شاری كه‌له‌پووری جیهانی یونیسكۆیه‌،

Homs, in Syria.

حومس، له‌ سوریا.

So people continue to flee into neighboring countries,

بۆیه‌ خه‌ڵك به‌رده‌وامن بۆ وڵاتانی دراوسێ هەڵدەهاتن،

and we build refugee camps for them in the desert.

كه‌مپی په‌نابه‌رانیان له‌ بیابان بۆ دروست ده‌كه‌ین.

Hundreds of thousands of people live in camps like these,

سه‌دان هه‌زار كه‌س له‌ كه‌مپی له‌و جۆره‌ ده‌ژین،

and thousands and thousands more, millions, live in towns and cities.

هه‌زاران هه‌زاری زیاتریش، ملیۆنانیان له‌ شارۆچكه‌ و شاره‌كان ده‌ژین.

And the communities,

ئه‌و كۆمه‌ڵگه‌یانه‌ی،

the neighboring countries that once welcomed them

وڵاتانی دراوسێ كه‌ له‌ ڕابردوو پێشوازییان لێكردبوون

with open arms and hearts

به‌ دڵ و ده‌ستێكی كراوه‌

are overwhelmed.

ته‌واو لێیان ڕژاوه‌.

There are simply not enough schools, water systems, sanitation.

لەوێ قوتابخانه‌ی ئاسایی، سیسته‌می ئاو، مه‌رجی ته‌ندروستی پێویست نییه‌.

Even rich European countries could never handle such an influx

ته‌نانه‌ت وڵاته‌ ئه‌وروپیه‌كانیش ناتوانن له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌و لێشاوه‌ مامه‌ڵه‌ بكه‌ن

without massive investment.

به‌بێ وه‌به‌رهێنانی گه‌وره‌.

The Syria war has driven almost four million people over the borders,

شه‌ڕی سووریا نزیكه‌ی چوار ملیۆن كه‌سی ئاواره‌ی سنووره‌كان كرد،

but over seven million people are on the run inside the country.

به‌ڵام زیاتر له‌ حه‌وت ملیۆن كه‌س له‌ ناوه‌وه‌ی وڵات هه‌ڵدێن.

That means that over half the Syrian population

ئه‌مه‌ش ئه‌وه‌ ده‌گه‌یه‌نێت كه‌ زیاتر له‌ نیوه‌ی دانیشتوانی سووریا

has been forced to flee.

زۆریان لێكراوه‌ هه‌ڵبێن.

Back to those neighboring countries hosting so many.

به‌ گه‌ڕانه‌وه‌ بۆ ئه‌و وڵاتانه‌ی دراوسێ كه‌ پێشوازیان له‌ ژماره‌یه‌كی زۆر كردووه‌.

They feel that the richer world has done too little to support them.

وا هه‌ست ده‌كه‌ن كه‌ جیهانی ده‌وڵه‌مه‌ند بۆ هاریكاریكردنیان هیچی وای نه‌كردووه‌ .

And days have turned into months, months into years.

ڕۆژه‌كان بوون به‌ مانگ، مانگه‌كانیش بوون به‌ ساڵ.

A refugee's stay is supposed to be temporary.

ده‌بێت مانه‌وه‌ی په‌نابه‌ر كاتی بێت.

Back to Doaa and Bassem in the water.

دەگەرێمەوە بۆ لای دوعا و باسم له‌ناو ئاو.

It was their second day, and Bassem was getting very weak.

ڕۆژی دووه‌میان بوو، باسم زۆر بێهێز ببوو.

And now it was Doaa's turn to say to Bassem,

ئێستا نۆره‌ی دوعا بوو تا به‌ باسم بڵێت،

"My love, please hold on to hope, to our future. We will make it."

"خوشه‌ویسته‌كه‌م، تكایه‌ بی هیوا مه‌به‌، بۆ داهاتوومان، ده‌توانین ئه‌نجامی بده‌ین."

And he said to her,

ئه‌و پێی گوت،

"I'm sorry, my love, that I put you in this situation.

"ببووره‌، خۆشه‌ویسته‌كه‌م، كه‌ تۆم خسته‌ ئه‌م بارودۆخه‌.

I have never loved anyone as much as I love you."

هیچ كه‌سێكم هێنده‌ی تۆ خۆشنه‌ویستووه‌."

And he released himself into the water,

و خۆی خسته‌ ناو ئاوه‌كه‌،

and Doaa watched as the love of her life drowned before her eyes.

دوعا سه‌یری ده‌كرد خۆشه‌ویستی ژیانی له‌پێش چاوی خۆی ژێرئاو كه‌وت.

Later that day,

كاتێكی تری هه‌مان رۆژ،

a mother came up to Doaa with her small 18-month-old daughter, Masa.

دایكێك هاته‌ لای دوعا به‌ خۆی و كچه‌ ١٨ مانگییه‌كه‌ی، ماسا.

This was the little girl I showed you in the picture earlier,

ئه‌مه‌ ئه‌و كچه‌یه‌ پێشتر وێنه‌كه‌یم پێشان دان،

with the life vests.

به‌ به‌روانكه‌ی ڕزگاركردن.

Her older sister Sandra had just drowned,

ساندرای خوشكه‌ گەورەکەی تازه‌ نقووم ببوو،

and her mother knew she had to do everything in her power

و دایكی ده‌یزانی ده‌بوایه‌ هه‌رچی له‌ توانایدا ده‌بێت بیكات

to save her daughter.

بۆ ڕزگاركردنی كچه‌كه‌ی.

And she said to Doaa, "Please take this child.

و به‌ دوعای گوت، "تكایه‌ ئه‌م منداڵه‌ بگره‌.

Let her be part of you. I will not survive."

با ببێت به‌ به‌شێك له‌ تۆ. من ڕزگارم نابێت."

And then she went away and drowned.

دواتر ڕۆیشت و ژێر ئاو كه‌وت.

So Doaa, the 19-year-old refugee who was terrified of the water,

دوعا، ئه‌و په‌نابه‌ره‌ ١٩ ساڵه‌ی كه‌ له‌ ئاو ده‌ترسا،

who couldn't swim,

كه‌ نه‌یده‌توانی مه‌له‌ بكات،

found herself in charge of two little baby kids.

وه‌كو به‌رپرسی دوو منداڵی بچووك خۆی بینیه‌وه‌.

And they were thirsty and they were hungry and they were agitated,

و برسی و تینوو په‌شۆكاو بوون.

and she tried her best to amuse them,

هه‌موو هه‌وڵی خۆی دا بۆ دڵخۆشكردنیان،

to sing to them, to say words to them from the Quran.

گۆرانییان بۆ بڵێت، چه‌ند وشه‌یه‌كیان له‌ قورئان بۆ بڵێت.

Around them, the bodies were bloating and turning black.

له‌ ده‌وریان لاشه‌كان هه‌ڵده‌ئاوسان و ڕه‌ش هه‌ڵده‌گه‌ڕان.

The sun was blazing during the day.

له‌كاتی ڕۆژدا خۆر زۆر گه‌رم بوو.

At night, there was a cold moon and fog.

له‌ شه‌وانیشدا، ته‌م و مانگێكی سارد.

It was very frightening.

زۆر ترسێنه‌ر بوو.

On the fourth day in the water, this is how Doaa probably looked

له‌ ڕۆژی چواره‌م له‌ناو ئاودا، دوعا به‌و شێوه‌یه‌ بوو

on the ring with her two children.

له‌سه‌ر ئه‌ڵقه‌كه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ هه‌ردوو منداڵه‌كه‌ی.

A woman came on the fourth day and approached her

ڕۆژی چواره‌م ژنێك لێی نزیك بۆوه‌

and asked her to take another child --

و داوای لێكرد منداڵێكی تر بگرێت--

a little boy, just four years old.

كوڕێكی بچووك، ته‌مه‌نی ته‌نیا چوار ساڵ بوو.

When Doaa took the little boy and the mother drowned,

كاتێك دوعا وه‌ریگرت و دایكه‌كه‌ ژێرئاو كه‌وت،

she said to the sobbing child,

بە ئه‌و منداڵه‌ی هه‌نسكی ده‌دا گوتی،

"She just went away to find you water and food."

"دایكت چووه‌ ئاو و خواردنت بۆ بێنێت."

But his heart soon stopped,

به‌ڵام هه‌ر زوو دڵی له‌ لێدان كه‌وت،

and Doaa had to release the little boy into the water.

ده‌بوو دوعا كوڕه‌ بچووكه‌كه‌ به‌ڕه‌ڵا بكاته‌ ناو ئاوه‌كه‌.

Later that day,

كاتێكی دواتری ئه‌و ڕۆژه‌،

she looked up into the sky with hope,

به‌ هیواوه‌ سه‌یرێكی ئاسمانی كرد،

because she saw two planes crossing in the sky.

چونكه‌ دوو فڕۆكه‌ی بینی به‌ ئاسمان ده‌په‌ڕینه‌وه‌.

And she waved her arms, hoping they would see her,

و ده‌سته‌كانی جوڵاند، به‌و هیوایه‌ی بیبینن،

but the planes were soon gone.

به‌ڵام فڕۆكه‌كان هه‌رزوو ڕۆیشتن.

But that afternoon, as the sun was going down,

به‌ڵام ئه‌و دوا نیوه‌ڕۆیه‌، له‌و كاته‌ی ڕۆژ ئاوا ده‌بوو،

she saw a boat, a merchant vessel.

به‌له‌مێكی بینی، به‌له‌مێكی بازرگانی.

And she said, "Please, God, let them rescue me."

گوتی، "تكایه‌، خودایه‌، با بێن ڕزگارم بكه‌ن."

She waved her arms and she felt like she shouted for about two hours.

ده‌سته‌كانی جوولاند و وا هه‌ستیكرد بۆ دوو كاتژمێر هاواری ده‌كرد.

And it had become dark, but finally the searchlights found her

و دونیا تاریك بوو، به‌ڵام له‌ كۆتاییدا ڕووناكی پشكنه‌ره‌كان دۆزییانه‌وه‌

and they extended a rope,

و په‌تێكیان هاوێشت،

astonished to see a woman clutching onto two babies.

سه‌ریان سوڕمابوو ژنێك ببینن كه‌ به‌ توندی دوو منداڵی گرتبوو.

They pulled them onto the boat, they got oxygen and blankets,

ڕایانكێشانه‌ سه‌ر به‌له‌مه‌كه‌، ئۆكسجین و به‌تانییان پێدان،

and a Greek helicopter came to pick them up

هه‌لیكۆپته‌رێكی یۆنانی هات و هه‌ڵیگرتن

and take them to the island of Crete.

بردنیه‌ كه‌نداوی كریت.

But Doaa looked down and asked, "What of Malek?"

به‌ڵام دوعا سه‌یری خواره‌وه‌ی كرد و پرسی، "ئه‌ی كوا مالیك؟"

And they told her the little baby did not survive --

پێیان گوت منداڵه‌ بچووكه‌كه‌ ڕزگاری نه‌بوو--

she drew her last breath in the boat's clinic.

له‌ نۆرینگه‌ی به‌له‌مه‌كه‌ كۆتا هه‌ناسه‌ی دا.

But Doaa was sure that as they had been pulled up onto the rescue boat,

به‌ڵام دوعا دڵنیا بوو له‌وه‌ی له‌و كاته‌ی بۆ سه‌ر به‌له‌می ڕزگاركردن ڕاكێشران،

that little baby girl had been smiling.

كچه‌ بچووكه‌كه‌ زه‌رده‌خه‌نه‌ی ده‌كرد.

Only 11 people survived that wreck, of the 500.

له‌ كۆی ٥٠٠ كه‌س، ته‌نیا ١١ یان له‌و به‌له‌مه‌ تێكشكاوه‌ ڕزگاریان بوو.

There was never an international investigation into what happened.

هیچ لێكۆڵینه‌وه‌یه‌كی نێوده‌وڵه‌تی له‌وه‌ی كه‌ ڕوویدا ئه‌نجامنه‌درا.

There were some media reports about mass murder at sea,

هه‌ندێك راپۆرتی میدیایی له‌باره‌ی كۆمه‌ڵكوژییه‌كه‌ له‌ ده‌ریا كرا،

a terrible tragedy,

تراژیدیایه‌كی ترسناك،

but that was only for one day.

به‌ڵام ئه‌مه‌ ته‌نیا بۆ یه‌ك ڕۆژ بوو.

And then the news cycle moved on.

دواتر بازنه‌ی هه‌واڵه‌كان به‌رده‌وام بوو.

Meanwhile, in a pediatric hospital on Crete,

له‌ هه‌مان كاتدا، له‌ نه‌خۆشخانه‌یه‌كی منداڵان له‌ كریت،

little Masa was on the edge of death.

ماسای بچووك له‌ لێواری مه‌رگ بوو.

She was really dehydrated. Her kidneys were failing.

ته‌واو وشك ببوو. گورچیله‌كانی زۆری نه‌مابوو له‌كار بكه‌ون.

Her glucose levels were dangerously low.

ڕێژه‌ی گلوكۆزی به‌ شێوه‌یه‌كی ترسناك نزم بوو.

The doctors did everything in their medical power to save them,

پزیشكه‌كان هه‌موو شتێك له‌ توانایاندا بوو بۆ ڕزگاركردنی ئه‌نجامیاندا،

and the Greek nurses never left her side,

په‌رستاره‌ یۆنانییه‌كان جێیان نه‌هێشت،

holding her, hugging her, singing her words.

ده‌یانگرت، له‌ باوه‌شیان ده‌كرد، گۆرانییان بۆ ده‌گوت به‌ زمانی خۆی.

My colleagues also visited and said pretty words to her in Arabic.

هاوكاره‌كانی منیش سه‌ردانیان كرد و وشه‌ی جوانیان به‌ عه‌ره‌بی بۆ گوت.

Amazingly, little Masa survived.

به‌ شێوه‌یه‌كی سه‌رسوڕهێنه‌ر، ماسای بچووك ڕزگاری بوو.

And soon the Greek press started reporting about the miracle baby,

هه‌ر زوو ڕۆژنامه‌ یۆنانییه‌كان له‌باره‌ی منداڵه‌ موعجیزه‌كه‌ هه‌واڵیان بلاوكرده‌وه‌

who had survived four days in the water without food or anything to drink,

كه‌ چوار ڕۆژ له‌ ناو ئاو مایه‌وه‌ به‌بێ خواردن یان هه‌ر شتێك كه‌ بیخواته‌وه‌

and offers to adopt her came from all over the country.

و داواكاری بۆ به‌خێوكردنی له‌ هه‌موو لایه‌كی وڵات هات.

And meanwhile, Doaa was in another hospital on Crete,

له‌ هه‌مان كاتدا، دوعا له‌ نه‌خۆشخانه‌یه‌كی تر له‌ كریت بوو،

thin, dehydrated.

لاواز، جه‌سته‌ی وشك ببۆوه‌.

An Egyptian family took her into their home as soon as she was released.

هه‌ركه‌ به‌ربوو، خێزانێكی میسڕی بردیانه‌ ماڵی خۆیان.

And soon word went around about Doaa's survival,

زوو هه‌واڵی زیندوو مانه‌وه‌ی دوعا بڵاوبۆوه‌،

and a phone number was published on Facebook.

و ژماره‌ مۆبایلێك له‌ فه‌یسبووك بڵاوكرایه‌وه‌.

Messages started coming in.

نامه‌ ده‌هات.

"Doaa, do you know what happened to my brother?

"دوعا ده‌زانی براكه‌م چی به‌سه‌ر هات؟

My sister? My parents? My friends? Do you know if they survived?"

خوشكم؟ خێزانه‌كه‌م؟ هاوڕێكانم؟ ده‌زانی گه‌ر هێشتا له‌ ژیاندا بن؟"

One of those messages said,

یه‌ك له‌و نامانه‌ گوتی،

"I believe you saved my little niece, Masa."

" بڕوام وایه‌ تۆ خوشكه‌زا بچووكه‌كه‌مت ڕزگاركرد، ماسا."

And it had this photo.

ئه‌م وێنه‌یه‌ی تێدابوو.

This was from Masa's uncle,

ئه‌مه‌ له‌ خاڵی ماساوه‌ بوو،

a Syrian refugee who had made it to Sweden with his family

په‌نابه‌رێكی سووریی كه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ خێزانه‌كه‌ی هاتبووه‌ سوید

and also Masa's older sister.

له‌گه‌ڵ خوشكه‌ گه‌وره‌كه‌ی ماساش.

Soon, we hope, Masa will be reunited with him in Sweden,

به‌م زووانه‌، هیوادارین، ماسا له‌ سوید پێی شاد بێته‌وه‌،

and until then, she's being cared for in a beautiful orphanage in Athens.

تا ئه‌و كاته‌، له‌ هه‌تیوگویه‌كی جوان له‌ ئه‌سینا گرنگی پێ ده‌درێت.

And Doaa? Well, word went around about her survival, too.

و دوعا؟ زۆرباشه‌، هه‌واڵه‌كان له‌باره‌ی زیندوو مانه‌وه‌ی ئه‌ویش بلاوبوونه‌وه‌.

And the media wrote about this slight woman,

ڕاگه‌یاندن له‌باره‌ی ئه‌م ژنه‌ لاوازه‌ نووسی،

and couldn't imagine how she could survive all this time

و باوه‌ڕیان نه‌ده‌كرد چۆن توانیویه‌تی ئه‌م هه‌موو كاته‌ بمێنێته‌وه‌

under such conditions in that sea,

له‌ ژێر ئه‌و جۆره‌ بارودۆخه‌دا له‌و ده‌ریایه‌دا،

and still save another life.

و هێشتاش كه‌سانی تریش ڕزگار بكات.

The Academy of Athens, one of Greece's most prestigious institutions,

ئه‌كادیمیای ئه‌سینا، یه‌ك له‌ پایه‌دارترین ده‌مه‌زاوه‌كانی یۆنان

gave her an award of bravery,

خه‌ڵاتی ئازایه‌تی پێ به‌خشی،

and she deserves all that praise,

و ئه‌و شایه‌نی ئه‌و هه‌موو پیاهه‌ڵدانه‌یه‌،

and she deserves a second chance.

و شایه‌نی ده‌رفه‌تی دووه‌مه‌.

But she wants to still go to Sweden.

به‌ڵام هێشتاش ده‌یه‌وێت بچێته‌ سوید.

She wants to reunite with her family there.

ده‌یه‌وێت له‌وێ له‌گه‌ڵ خێزانه‌كه‌ی شادبێته‌وه‌.

She wants to bring her mother and her father and her younger siblings

ده‌یه‌وێت دایك و باوك و خوشك و برا بچووكه‌كانی

away from Egypt there as well,

له‌ میسڕه‌وه‌ بێنێت،

and I believe she will succeed.

باوه‌ڕم وایه‌ ئه‌و سه‌رده‌كه‌وێت.

She wants to become a lawyer or a politician

ده‌یه‌وێت ببێته‌ پارێزه‌ر یاخود سیاسه‌تمه‌دار

or something that can help fight injustice.

یان شتێك كه‌ یارمه‌تی بدات شه‌ڕی نادادپه‌روه‌ری بكات.

She is an extraordinary survivor.

ئه‌و رزگاربووێكی سه‌یره‌.

But I have to ask:

به‌ڵام ده‌بێت پرسیار بكه‌م:

what if she didn't have to take that risk?

ئه‌ی ئه‌گه‌ر خۆی نه‌خستبا ئه‌و مه‌ترسییه‌؟

Why did she have to go through all that?

بۆچی ده‌بووایه‌ به‌ هه‌موو ئه‌مانه‌ تێپه‌ڕێت؟

Why wasn't there a legal way for her to study in Europe?

بۆچی ڕێگه‌یه‌كی یاسایی‌ بۆ خوێندن له‌ ئه‌وروپا نییە؟

Why couldn't Masa have taken an airplane to Sweden?

بۆچی ماسا نه‌یتوانی به‌ فڕۆكه‌ بچێتە سوید؟

Why couldn't Bassem have found work?

بۆچی باسم كارێكی ده‌ست نه‌كه‌وتبوو؟

Why is there no massive resettlement program for Syrian refugees,

بۆچی هیچ به‌رنامه‌یه‌كی گه‌وره‌ی جێگیر- بوونه‌وه‌ بۆ په‌نابه‌ره‌ سووریه‌كان نییه‌،

the victims of the worst war of our times?

قوربانیانی خراپترین شه‌ڕ له‌ سه‌رده‌می ئێستاماندا؟

The world did this for the Vietnamese in the 1970s. Why not now?

جیهان ئه‌مه‌ی بۆ ڤێتنامییه‌كان له‌ ١٩٧٠كان کرد، بۆچی ئێستا نایكات؟

Why is there so little investment in the neighboring countries

بۆچی سه‌رمایه‌گوزارییه‌كی زۆر كه‌م له‌ وڵاته‌ دراوسێیه‌كان هه‌یه‌

hosting so many refugees?

كه‌ ژماره‌یه‌كی زۆر په‌نابه‌ر له‌خۆده‌گرن؟

And why, the root question,

پرسیاره‌ ببنچینه‌ییه‌كه‌، بۆچی،

is so little being done to stop the wars, the persecution

زۆر كه‌م كراوه‌ بۆ وه‌ستاندنی شه‌ڕ، زۆرداری و

and the poverty that is driving so many people

هه‌ژاریی كه‌ هانی خه‌ڵكێكی زۆر ده‌دات

to the shores of Europe?

بۆ كه‌ناراوه‌كانی ئه‌وروپا؟

Until these issues are resolved,

تاكو چاره‌سه‌ری ئه‌م پرسانه‌ ده‌كرێت،

people will continue to take to the seas

خه‌ڵكی به‌رده‌وام ده‌بن بۆ گرتنه‌به‌ری ده‌ریا و

and to seek safety and asylum.

گه‌ڕان به‌ دوای پارێزراویی و په‌ناگه‌.

And what happens next?

ئه‌ی دواتر چی ڕووده‌دات؟

Well, that is largely Europe's choice.

زۆرباشه‌، تا ڕاده‌یه‌كی زۆر ئه‌مه‌ هه‌ڵبژارده‌ی ئه‌وروپایه‌.

And I understand the public fears.

و له‌ ترسه‌ گشتییه‌كان تێده‌گه‌م.

People are worried about their security, their economies, the changes of culture.

خه‌ڵك له‌باره‌ی ئاسایشی خۆیان، ئابوورییان، گۆڕانی كلتوور نیگه‌رانن.

But is that more important than saving human lives?

به‌ڵام ئایا ئه‌مه‌ له‌ ڕزگاركردنی ژیانی مرۆڤه‌كان گرنگتره‌؟

Because there is something fundamental here

چونكه‌ لێره‌دا شتێكی بنچینه‌یی هه‌یه‌

that I think overrides the rest,

كه‌ وای بۆ ده‌چم به‌سه‌ر هه‌مووی زاڵده‌بێت،

and it is about our common humanity.

له‌باره‌ی مرۆڤایه‌تی هاوبه‌شه‌.

No person fleeing war or persecution

نابێت هیچ كه‌سێك كه‌ له‌ شه‌ڕ یان زۆرداریی هه‌ڵدێت

should have to die crossing a sea to reach safety.

بۆ گه‌یشتن به‌ پارێزراویی له‌ په‌ڕینه‌وه‌ له‌ ده‌ریا بمرێت.

One thing is for sure,

تاکە شت کە دڵنیاکەرەوەیە،

that no refugee would be on those dangerous boats

هیچ په‌نابه‌رێك له‌سه‌ر ئه‌م به‌له‌مه‌ ترسناكانه‌ نابێت

if they could thrive where they are.

گه‌ر بتوانن سه‌ربكه‌ون له‌و شوێنه‌ی كه‌ تیایدان.

And no migrant would take that dangerous journey

و هیچ كۆچبه‌رێك ئه‌م گه‌شته‌ مه‌ترسیداره‌ ئه‌نجامنادات

if they had enough food for themselves and their children.

گه‌ر خۆراكی پێویستیان بۆ خۆیان و منداڵه‌كانیان هه‌بێت.

And no one would put their life savings

و هیچ كه‌سێك سه‌رمایه‌كه‌ی ناخاته‌

in the hands of those notorious smugglers

ده‌ستی ئه‌م قاچاخچییه‌ به‌دناوانه‌

if there was a legal way to migrate.

گه‌ر ڕێگه‌یه‌كی یاسایی بۆ كۆچكردن هەبێت.

So on behalf of little Masa

بۆیه‌ به‌ناوی ماسای بچوکەوە

and on behalf of Doaa

و به‌ناوی دوعا

and of Bassem

و باسم

and of those 500 people who drowned with them,

و ئه‌و ٥٠٠ كه‌سه‌ی كه‌ له‌گه‌ڵیان خنكان،

can we make sure that they did not die in vain?

ده‌توانین دڵنیایی بده‌ین له‌وه‌ی كه‌ ئه‌وان به‌بێ سوود نه‌مردن؟

Could we be inspired by what happened,

ئایا ده‌كرێت ئه‌وه‌ی ڕوویدا كاریگه‌ریی له‌سه‌رمان هه‌بووبێت،

and take a stand for a world in which every life matters?

هه‌ڵوێست وه‌ربگرین بۆ جیهانێك كه‌ ژیانی هه‌موو كه‌سێك گرنگ بێت؟
