Every day, I listen to harrowing stories of people fleeing for their lives,

And one day, men on motorcycles tried to kidnap her.

Millions of refugees are living in exile, in limbo.

They're living in countries [fleeing] from a war that has been raging

Even if they wanted to return, they can't.

So people continue to flee into neighboring countries,

Hundreds of thousands of people live in camps like these,

the neighboring countries that once welcomed them

There are simply not enough schools, water systems, sanitation.

Even rich European countries could never handle such an influx

The Syria war has driven almost four million people over the borders,

That means that over half the Syrian population

It was their second day, and Bassem was getting very weak.

the victims of the worst war of our times?

קורבנות המלחמה הנוראית ביותר של ימינו?

The world did this for the Vietnamese in the 1970s. Why not now?

העולם עשה את זה עבור הוייטנאמים בשנות ה70, מדוע לא עכשיו?

Why is there so little investment in the neighboring countries

מדוע משקיעים כל כך מעט במדינות השכנות

hosting so many refugees?

שמספקות מקלט לכל כך הרבה פליטים?

And why, the root question,

ולמה, שאלת המפתח,

is so little being done to stop the wars, the persecution

נעשה כל כך מעט כדי לעצור את המלחמות, את הרדיפות

and the poverty that is driving so many people

ואת העוני שגורם לכל כך הרבה אנשים

to the shores of Europe?

לצאת אל חופי אירופה?

Until these issues are resolved,

עד שיימצא פתרון לבעיות האלה,

people will continue to take to the seas

אנשים ימשיכו לצאת אל החופים

and to seek safety and asylum.

ולחפש בטחון ומקלט.

And what happens next?

ומה יקרה בעתיד?

Well, that is largely Europe's choice.

ובכן, זו בעיקר הבחירה של אירופה.

And I understand the public fears.

ואני מבינה את החשש בציבור.

People are worried about their security, their economies, the changes of culture.

אנשים חוששים לבטחונם, לכלכלות שלהם, משינויי התרבות בארצם,

But is that more important than saving human lives?

אבל האם זה חשוב יותר מאשר להציל חיי אדם?

Because there is something fundamental here

כי יש כאן משהו בסיסי,

that I think overrides the rest,

שלדעתי גובר על כל השאר,

and it is about our common humanity.

וזו האנושיות המשותפת לכולנו.

No person fleeing war or persecution

אף אדם שבורח ממלחמה או מרדיפות

should have to die crossing a sea to reach safety.

לא צריך היה למות בחציית ים כדי להגיע למקלט.

One thing is for sure,

דבר אחד בטוח,

that no refugee would be on those dangerous boats

אף פליט לא היה עולה על הסירות המסוכנות ההן

if they could thrive where they are.

אילו יכול היה לשגשג במקום מוצאו.

And no migrant would take that dangerous journey

ואף מהגר לא היה יוצא למסע המסוכן הזה

if they had enough food for themselves and their children.

אילו היה מספיק אוכל לו ולילדיו.

And no one would put their life savings

ואף אחד לא היה משקיע את כל חסכונותיו

in the hands of those notorious smugglers

בידיהם של אותם מבריחים ידועים לשמצה

if there was a legal way to migrate.

אילו הייתה דרך חוקית להגר.

So on behalf of little Masa

אז בשם מסא הקטנה

and on behalf of Doaa

ובשם דואא

and of Bassem

ובשם באסם

and of those 500 people who drowned with them,

ובשם אותם 500 אנשים שטבעו למוות איתם

can we make sure that they did not die in vain?

האם נוכל להבטיח שמותם לא היה לשוא?

Could we be inspired by what happened,

האם נוכל לקבל השראה מהמקרה הזה,

and take a stand for a world in which every life matters?

ולנקוט עמדה למען עולם שבו חיי כל אדם חשובים?
