Every day, I listen to harrowing stories of people fleeing for their lives,

A Syrian refugee, 19 years old,

Once an aspiring student thinking only of her future,

It was August that year, and already 2,000 people had died

They were weak and weary.

Soon they saw a boat approach -- a smaller boat, 10 men on board,

So people continue to flee into neighboring countries,

Hundreds of thousands of people live in camps like these,

And the communities,

There are simply not enough schools, water systems, sanitation.

Even rich European countries could never handle such an influx

The Syria war has driven almost four million people over the borders,

A refugee's stay is supposed to be temporary.

Back to Doaa and Bassem in the water.

It was their second day, and Bassem was getting very weak.

So Doaa, the 19-year-old refugee who was terrified of the water,

A woman came on the fourth day and approached her

and asked her to take another child --

When Doaa took the little boy and the mother drowned,

There were some media reports about mass murder at sea,

"डोआ, तुम्हे पता है कि मेरे भाई के साथ क्या हुआ?

My sister? My parents? My friends? Do you know if they survived?"

मेरी बहन? मेरे माता-पिता? मेरे मित्र? तुम्हे पता है बच पाये या नहीं?

One of those messages said,

उनमें से एक सन्देश में लिखा था,

"I believe you saved my little niece, Masa."

"मुझे लगता है की तुमने मेरी नन्ही भतीजी, मासा को बचाया है।"

And it had this photo.

और उसमें यह तस्वीर थी।

This was from Masa's uncle,

यह मासा के चाचा का सन्देश था,

a Syrian refugee who had made it to Sweden with his family

एक सीरियाई शरणार्थी जो अपने परिवार और मासा की बड़ी बहन

and also Masa's older sister.

के साथ स्वीडन पहुँच गया था।

Soon, we hope, Masa will be reunited with him in Sweden,

हम आशा करते हैं की जल्द ही मासा उनके साथ फिर से मिल जाएगी स्वीडन में,

and until then, she's being cared for in a beautiful orphanage in Athens.

And Doaa? Well, word went around about her survival, too.

And the media wrote about this slight woman,

The Academy of Athens, one of Greece's most prestigious institutions,

and she deserves all that praise,

But she wants to still go to Sweden.

She wants to reunite with her family there.

She wants to bring her mother and her father and her younger siblings

away from Egypt there as well,

and I believe she will succeed.

She wants to become a lawyer or a politician

or something that can help fight injustice.

She is an extraordinary survivor.

But I have to ask:

what if she didn't have to take that risk?

Why did she have to go through all that?

Why wasn't there a legal way for her to study in Europe?

उसके लिए यूरोप में पढ़ने का कोई कानूनी तरीका क्यों नहीं था ?

Why couldn't Masa have taken an airplane to Sweden?

क्यों मासा एक हवाई जहाज़ में बैठ कर स्वीडन नहीं जा सकती थी?

Why couldn't Bassem have found work?

क्यों बासेम को कोई काम नहीं मिल सकता था?

Why is there no massive resettlement program for Syrian refugees,

क्यों हमारे समय के सबसे बुरे युद्ध के पीड़ित सीरियाई

the victims of the worst war of our times?

शरणार्थियों के लिए कोई विशाल पुनर्वास कार्यक्रम नहीं है?

The world did this for the Vietnamese in the 1970s. Why not now?

संसार में १९७० में विएतनामियों के लिए ऐसा किया गया था। अब क्यों नहीं ?

Why is there so little investment in the neighboring countries

क्यों इतना कम निवेश है उन पड़ोसी देशों में जो इतने सारे

hosting so many refugees?

शरणार्थियों को शरण दे रहे हैं?

And why, the root question,

और मूल प्रश्न क्यों,

is so little being done to stop the wars, the persecution

इतना कम किया जा रहा है इन युद्धों को रोकने के लिए, इस अत्याचार

and the poverty that is driving so many people

और इस गरीबी को रोकने के लिए, जो इतने सारे लोगों को धकेल रहा है

to the shores of Europe?

Until these issues are resolved,

people will continue to take to the seas

And what happens next?

Well, that is largely Europe's choice.

And I understand the public fears.

मैं आम जनता के डर को समझ सकती हूँ।

People are worried about their security, their economies, the changes of culture.

लोग अपनी सुरक्षा, अर्थव्यवस्था, संस्कृति के परिवर्तनों के बारे में चिंतित हैं।

But is that more important than saving human lives?

किन्तु क्या वह मानव जीवन बचाने से ज़्यादा आवश्यक है?

Because there is something fundamental here

क्यूंकि यहाँ पर कुछ मौलिक बात है

that I think overrides the rest,

जो बाकि सब से बहुत अधिक महत्वपूर्ण है,

and it is about our common humanity.

और वह है हमारी सामान्य मानवता।

No person fleeing war or persecution

युद्ध अथवा अत्याचार से भागते किसी भी

should have to die crossing a sea to reach safety.

व्यक्ति को सुरक्षा की खोज में समुद्र लांघते हुए मरने की नौबत नहीं आनी चाहिए।

One thing is for sure,

एक बात निश्चित है,

that no refugee would be on those dangerous boats

उन खतरे से भरी किश्तियों पर कोई शरणार्थी नहीं होता, यदि वह

if they could thrive where they are.

वहाँ फल फूल सकते, जहाँ वह रहते हैं।

And no migrant would take that dangerous journey

और कोई प्रवासी वह खतरनाक सफर नहीं करता

if they had enough food for themselves and their children.

यदि उसके पास अपने और अपने बच्चों के खाने के लिए पर्याप्त भोजन होता।

And no one would put their life savings

और कोई अपनी उम्र भर की बचत

in the hands of those notorious smugglers
