Over the next five minutes,

my intention is to transform your relationship with sound.

Let me start with the observation

that most of the sound around us is accidental;

والذي يحيط بنا دوماً . ( هدير سيارات )

much of it is unpleasant. (Traffic noise)

We stand on street corners, shouting over noise like this,

مُدعين أن هذا الضجيج غير موجود

pretending it doesn't exist.

This habit of suppressing sound has meant

حسناً , إن هذه العادة بقمع الصوت قد غدت ..

that our relationship with sound has become largely unconscious.

علاقتنا في التعامل مع الصوت وهي إلى حد كبير لا واعية

There are four major ways sound is affecting you all the time,

إن هنالك أربع طُرق يؤثر بنا فيها الصوت طيلة الوقت

and I'd like to raise them in your consciousness today.

وأرغب في أن أعرضها على عقولكم اليوم

The first is physiological.

الأولى هي الفيسولوجية ( صوت رنين ساعة مرتفع )

(Alarm clocks ring)

Sorry about that.

أعتذر عن هذا .. فقد أعطيتكم جرعة من الكزرتزول , هرمون الإقتِتَال

I just gave you a shot of cortisol, your fight-flight hormone.

إن الاصوات تؤثر على إفرازات الهرمونات خاصتنا طيلة الوقت

Sounds are affecting your hormone secretions all the time,

but also your breathing, heart rate -- which I just also did --

بل وحتى تنفسنا , دقات قلبنا - كما فعلت الأن -

وأيضاً موجات دماغنا

and your brainwaves.

It's not just unpleasant sounds like that that do it.

وليس فقط هذا الصوت المزعج الذي يفعل هذا .

هذا صوت إبحار ( صوت أمواج بحر )

This is surf. (Ocean waves)

It has the frequency of roughly 12 cycles per minute.

إن ترددها مايقارب 12 دورة في الدقيقة

ومعظم الناس يجده مريحٌ جداً

Most people find that very soothing,

and, interestingly, 12 cycles per minute is roughly the frequency

وبصورة مدهشة , 12 دورة في الدقيقة

of the breathing of a sleeping human,

so there is a deep resonance with being at rest.

وهنالك نوع من الرنين العميق الذي يحدث اثناء الراحة

We also associate it with being stress-free and on holiday.

The second way in which sound affects you is psychological.

والطريقة الثانية التي يؤثر فيها الصوت هي نفسياً

Music is the most powerful form of sound that we know

فالموسيقى هي أقوى نوع من الصوت نعرفه

that affects our emotional state. (Albinoni's Adagio)

حيث تؤثر على حالتنا العاطفية ( مقطوعة " البينوني " )

This is guaranteed to make most of you feel pretty sad if I leave it on.

فهذا الصوت يضمن لمعظمكم الشعور بحزن شديد

إذا بقيت تُعزف .

Music is not the only kind of sound, however, which affects your emotions.

ولكن الموسيقى ليست النوع الوحيد من الصوت الذي يؤثر على مشاعرك

Natural sound can do that, too.

فالأصوات الطبيعية تقوم بنفس الأمر

Birdsong, for example, is a sound which most people find reassuring.

مثل زقزقة الطيور على سبيل المثال فهو الصوت الذي يجده معظم الناس

باعثاً على الاطمئنان ( صوت طيور تشدو )

There's a reason: over hundreds of thousands of years

وهنالك لسبب لذلك .. فعلى مئات الآلاف من السنوات ..

we've learned that when the birds are singing, things are safe.

أدركنا انه حين تغني الطيور .. فالأمور على ما يرام ...

It's when they stop you need to be worried.

وعندما يتوقف هذ الصوت فيجب علينا القلق .

The third way in which sound affects you is cognitively.

الطريقة الثالثة التي يؤثر بها الصوت علينا هي " إدراكيا "

You can't understand two people talking at once (Voice-over)

فلايمكنك أن تستوعب شخصين يتحدثان في نفس الوقت ( صوت : إذا كنت تستمع لهذا الاصدار )

( فأنا وأنت على المضمار الخاطىء ) او كما في هذه الحالة فهنالك شخصٌ يتكلم مرتين

or in this case, one person talking twice.

حاولوا الاستماع للصوت الآخر ( عليك أن تقرر إلى أي الصوتين سوف تستمع )

You have to choose which me you're going to listen to.

We have a very small amount of bandwidth for processing auditory input,

فنحن نملك حزمة صغيرة لمعالجة المدخلات الصوتية ..

والتي بسببها ضجة كهذه ( ضجة مكاتب عمل )

which is why noise like this ...

(Office noise)

تؤثر بصورة مدمرة على إنتاجيتك

is extremely damaging for productivity.

If you have to work in an open-plan office like this,

فإذا كنت تعمل في مكتب " مفتوح " كهذا ..

your productivity is greatly reduced.

فإن إنتاجيتك ستقل بصورة كبيرة

And whatever number you're thinking of, it probably isn't as bad as this.

ومهما كانت النسبة التي تُفكر بها فلن تكون سيئة كما هذا ..

You are one-third as productive in open-plan offices as in quiet rooms.

فإن انتاجيتك في ذلك النوع من المكاتب هي ثُلث انتاجيتك في الغُرف الهادئة ..

I have a tip for you:

ولدي نصيحة لكم .. اذا كنتم تعملون في بيئة كهذه ..

if you work in spaces like that, carry headphones with you,

واستخدمتم سمعات الأٌذن للاستماع لصوت مريح كصوت العصافير

with a soothing sound like birdsong.

Put them on, and your productivity goes back up to triple what it would be.

فإن انتاجيتكم ستتضاعف لثلاث مرات أكثر مما لو لم تفعلوا ذلك

والطريقة الرابعة التي يؤثر بها الصوت علينا هي " سلوكياً "

The fourth way in which sound affects us is behaviorally.

With all that other stuff going on,

فمع كل هذه الامور التي ذكرنا .. سيكون من الغريب ..

it would be amazing if our behavior didn't change.

أن لا يتأثر سلوكنا

(Techno music)

( صوت موسيقى " تكنو " داخل سيارة ) لذا أسئل نفسك : اذا كان السائق يقود السيارة ..

So ask yourself: Is this person ever going to drive

فهل سيقود بسرعة 28 ميل\ساعة ؟ لا أظن ذلك !

at a steady 28 miles per hour?

I don't think so.

At the simplest, you move away from unpleasant sound

ببساطة . أنت تبتعد عن الصوت المزعج

and towards pleasant sounds.

وتتجه نحو الصوت المريح

So if I were to play this ...

لذا إن عرضنا هذا الصوت ( صوت حفر )

(Jackhammer)

for more than a few seconds, you'd feel uncomfortable;

لاكثر من عدة ثوان سوف تشعر بعدم الارتياح

for more than a few minutes, you'd be leaving the room in droves.

وان قمنا بذلك لاكثر من دقائق , فسوف تخرجون من هذه القاعة أسراباً

For people who can't get away from noise like that,

وبالنسبة للأشخاص اللذين لايستطيعون التهرب من هكذا نوعية أصوات ..

فإنها تؤثر بصورة مدمرة على صحتهم

it's extremely damaging for their health.

وليس هذا فقط التأثير السلبي للأصوات

And that's not the only thing that bad sound damages.

Most retail sound is inappropriate and accidental, even hostile,

فمعظم محلات التجزئة تعرض أصواتاً غير ملائمة , عرضية وحتى عدائية ..

and it has a dramatic effect on sales.

ولهذا تأثير كبير على المبيعات

For you retailers, you may want to look away before I show this slide.

[Inappropriate retail soundscapes sales down 28%]

They're losing up to 30 percent of their business

إن هؤلاء الباعة يفقدون 30% من أعمالهم

لان المشترين يغادرون المخازن أسرع ويتجهون نحو الابواب ..

with people leaving shops faster, or just turning around at the door.

فجميعنا فعل ذلك وترك المخزن ...

We've all done it, left the area,

بسبب الصوت المروع الذي يكون هناك

because the sound in there is so dreadful.

I want to spend just a moment talking about the model we've developed,

وأريد أن أتحدث قليلاً عن

النظام الذي طورناه والذي يخولنا البدء من الأعلى ..

which allows us to start at the top and look at the drivers of sound,

على محفزات الصوت وتحليل أنماط الصوت ..

analyze the soundscape

and then predict the four outcomes I just talked about.

Or start at the bottom and say what outcomes we want,

and then design a soundscape to have a desired effect.

وأخيراً فنحن نملك اليوم معلومات كافية يمكن تطبيقها

At last we've got some science we can apply.

ونحن في عصر تسويق تصميم الأصوات

And we're in the business of designing soundscapes.

Just a word on music.

فقط كلمة مع موسيقى .. فالموسيقى هي من أقوى الاصوت

Music is the most powerful sound there is, often inappropriately deployed.

التي تُشغّل أحيانا بصورة غير ملائمة

It's powerful for two reasons:

وهي قوية لسبَبَين ..فأنت تميزها بسرعة

you recognize it fast, and you associate it very powerfully.

كما أنك تربطها بحدثٍ بكفاءة عالية

I'll give you two examples.

ويمكن أن أعطيكم مثالين ( النغمة الأولى من أغنية البيتلز " ليلة يوم صعب " )

(First chord of "A Hard Day's Night")

Most of you recognize that immediately.

معظمك ميز هذا الصوت مباشرة ..

The younger, maybe not.

ربما لم يستطع الشباب ذلك ( ضحك )

( أول نغمتين من فلم " الفك " ) ومعظمكم يمكنه ربط هذا الصوت بشيء !

Most of you associate that with something!

Now, those are one-second samples of music.

كانت هذه أمثلة على أصوات مدتها ثانية واحدة

Music is very powerful,

الموسيقى قوية جداً ..

and unfortunately, it's veneering commercial spaces, often inappropriately.

إنها الغلاف المحيط بالعملية التسويقية , وغالباً ما تكون غير ملائمة

I hope that's going to change over the next few years.

Let me talk about brands for a moment, since some of you run brands.

Every brand is out there making sound right now.

There are eight expressions of a brand in sound; they're all important.

And every brand needs to have guidelines at the center.

وأنا سعيد لأقول أن هذا يحدث اليوم ..

I'm glad to say that is starting to happen now.

You all recognize that one.

جميعكم ميز ذلك ( نغمة نوكيا ) إن هذه النغمة

(Nokia ringtone)

This is the most-played tune in the world today --

هي الاكثر تشغيلا حول العالم اليوم

1.8 مليون مرة يومياً وهذه النغمة التي تُشغل

1.8 billion times a day, that tune is played.

(Laughter)

And it cost Nokia absolutely nothing.

لا تكلف " نوكيا " أي شيء

I'll leave you with four golden rules, for those of you who run businesses,

وسوف أترككم مع القواعد الذهبية الأربعة للذين يديرون أعمالاً

في التسويق الصوتي

for commercial sound.

First, make it congruent,

أولاً , إجعله متناغم

pointing in the same direction as your visual communication.

ويشير الى نفس الجهة التي يُشير إليها تسويقُك المرئي

فهذا يرفع تأثيره أكثر من 1100%

That increases impact by over 1,100 percent.

أما إن كان غير متناغم ويشير الى جهة معاكسة

If your sound is pointing the opposite direction, incongruent,

you reduce impact by 86 percent.

فهذا يُخفف التأثير ب 86%

That's an order of magnitude, up or down.

والأمر كما المغناطيس , إما جذب أو نفر

This is important.

وهذا أمرٌ مهم .

Secondly, make it appropriate to the situation.

ثانياً , إجعله ملائم للموقف

Thirdly, make it valuable.

ثالثاً , إجعله ذا قيمة فأعط المشترين شيئاً مع الصوت

Give people something with the sound, don't just bombard them with stuff.

ولا تخدعهم به

وأخيراً , أعد إختباره مرة تلو المرة

Finally, test and test it again.

Sound is complex; there are many countervailing influences.

إن الصوت شيء مُعقد ..فله تأثيرات تراكمية .

فيكمن أن نصفه كأنه صحن من معكرونة الاسبغتي ..

It can be a bit like a bowl of spaghetti:

أحياناً يجب أن تأكله بأكمله لترى ما الذي سيحدث

sometimes you just have to eat it and see what happens.

So I hope this talk has raised sound in your consciousness.

أتمنى أن أكون قد رفعت من مقدار وعيكم بالصوت

If you're listening consciously,

you can take control of the sound around you.

It's good for your health and for your productivity.

If we all do that, we move to a state

that I like to think will be sound living in the world.

I recommend at least five minutes a day, but there's no maximum dose.
