It all started back in 1977.

Gifted education hadn't really taken hold too much.

I've learned to cede control of the classroom

There's a trust and an understanding

It's impossible. Their collective wisdom

and I admit it to them openly.

So I'll just share with you some stories very quickly

of some magical things that have happened.

In this game we had a little girl,

and she was the Defense Minister of the poorest nation.

And the Defense Minister -- she had the tank corps and Air Force and so forth.

And she was next door to a very wealthy, oil-rich neighbor.

و كانت بجوار دولة جد غنية، ذات ثروة بترولية كبيرة.

Without provocation,

و دون أي إثارة،

suddenly she attacked, against her Prime Minister's orders,

و توجهت فجأة، و عكس أمر وزيرها الأول،

the next-door neighbor's oil fields.

نحو أراضي الجيران.

She marched into the oil field reserves,

تقدمت نحو الأراضي البترولية،

surrounded it, without firing a shot,

و أحاطتها، دون أي طلقة سلاح،

and secured it and held it.

و بذلك إستحوذت عليها.

And that neighbor was unable to conduct any military operations

و لم تستطع الدولة المجاورة على القيام بأي حركة عسكرية

because their fuel supply was locked up.

لأن تزويدهم بالبترول قد توقف.

We were all upset with her, "Why are you doing this?

و كان الجميع غاضبا عليها، "لماذا تفعلين هذا؟

This is the World Peace Game. What is wrong with you?"

إن هذه لعبة السلام العالمي؟ ما هي مشكلتكِ؟

(Laughter)

This was a little girl and, at nine years old,

و كانت طفلة صغيرة، في سن التاسعة،

she held her pieces and said, "I know what I'm doing."

إستجمعت قوامها و قالت، "إني أعرف ماذا أفعل."

To her girlfriends she said that.

و قالت ذلك لصديقاتها

That's a breach there.

و كانت هذه ثغرة فارغة.

And we learned in this, you don't really ever want to cross

و تعلمنا أنه لا أحد يريد أن يخالف

a nine year-old girl with tanks.

رأي طفلة في سن التاسعة و تملك دبابات.

(Laughter)

They are the toughest opponents.

إنهم أقوى الخصوم.

And we were very upset.

و كنا جد مضطربين.

I thought I was failing as a teacher. Why would she do this?

إعتقدت أني قد فشلت كمدرس. لماذا فعلت هذا؟

But come to find out, a few game days later --

لكن فهمت، قليلا بعد أن تابعنا اللعبة --

and there are turns where we take negotiation from a team --

و هنالك مناوبة في تقديم المفاوضات --

actually there's a negotiation period with all teams,

في حقيقة الأمر هنالك فترة مفاوضة مع كل فرقة،

and each team takes a turn,

و تتناوب كل فرقة على ذالك،

then we go back in negotiation, around and around,

so each turn around is one game day.

So a few game days later it came to light

that we found out this major country

was planning a military offensive

to dominate the entire world.

Had they had their fuel supplies, they would have done it.

و إذا حصلوا على تزويدات البترول الكافية، لقاموا حتما بذالك.

She was able to see the vectors and trend lines and intentions

لقد تمكنت من إبصار كل الإنفعالات و النزعات و العزائم

long before any of us

قبل أي أحد منا

and understand what was going to happen

و لقد فهمت ما كان سيحدث من بعد

and made a philosophical decision

لتأخذ بذالك قرارا فلسفيا

to attack in a peace game.

يتجلى في الهجوم خلال لعبة سلام.

Now she used a small war to avert a larger war,

و بذالك قد إستعملت حربا صغيرة لتتجنب حربا أكبر،

so we stopped and had a very good philosophical discussion

فتوقفنا للقيام بمناقشة فلسفية مفيدة

about whether that was right,

حول صحة ما تم القيام به،

conditional good, or not right.

حسن أو لا.

That's the kind of thinking that we put them in, the situations.

و هذا هو نوع التفكير الذي نضعهم فيه، الموقف الحقيقي.

I could not have designed that in teaching it.

لن أكون قادرا على تصميم درس يعلم هذا.

It came about spontaneously through their collective wisdom.

Another example, a beautiful thing happened.

We have a letter in the game.

لدينا رسالة في اللعبة.

If you're a military commander and you wage troops --

إذا كنتم قائدا عسكريا يقود القوات --

the little plastic toys on the board -- and you lose them,

تلك اللعب البلاستيكية فوق الطاولة -- فإذا فقدتم قواتكم،

I put in a letter.

فأطالب برسالة.

You have to write a letter to their parents --

فيجب عليكم كتابة رسالة لوالديهم --

the fictional parents of your fictional troops --

الوالدين الخياليين لقواتكم الخيالية --

explaining what happened and offering your condolences.

حيث تفسرون لهم ما قد حدث و تقدمون تعازيكم فيها.

So you have a little bit more thought

و بذالك ستفكرون بعمق

before you commit to combat.

قبل أن تقرروا خوض القتال.

And so we had this situation come up --

فلقينا يوما ما هذا الموقف --

last summer actually,

خلال موسم الصيف الماضي في الحقيقة،

at Agnor-Hurt School in Albemarle County --

في مدرسة أكنور-هارت في مقاطعة ألبيمارل --

and one of our military commanders got up to read that letter

and one of the other kids said, "Mr. Hunter,

let's ask -- there's a parent over there."

There was a parent visiting that day, just sitting in the back of the room.

"Let's ask that mom to read the letter.

It'll be more realer if she reads it."

So we did, we asked her, and she gamely picked up the letter.

"Sure." She started reading. She read one sentence.

"بالطبع." و بدأت القراءة. قرأت جملة واحدة.

She read two sentences.

ثم جملتين.

By the third sentence, she was in tears.

و عند الجملة الثالثة بدأت المرأة بالبكاء.

I was in tears.

و بكيت انا أيضا.

Everybody understood

و بذالك فهم الجميع

that when we lose somebody, the winners are not gloating.

أنه عندما نفقد أحدا ما، فإنه لا شماتة للمنتصرين.

We all lose.

و إنا جميعا خاسرون.

And it was an amazing occurrence and an amazing understanding.

و قد كان

I'll show you what my friend David says about this.

و دعوني أريكم ما يقول صديقي ديفيد عن كل هذا.

He's been in many battles.

و لقد شارك في العديد من المعارك.

(Video) David: We've really had enough of people attacking.

I mean, we've been lucky [most of] the time.

But now I'm feeling really weird

because I'm living what Sun Tzu said one week.

One week he said,

"Those who go into battle and win

will want to go back,

And so I've been winning battles,

so I'm going into battles, more battles.

And I think it's sort of weird to be living

what Sun Tzu said.

JH: I get chills every time I see that.

That's the kind of engagement you want to have happen.

And I can't design that, I can't plan that,

and I can't even test that.

But it's self-evident assessment.

We know that's an authentic assessment of learning.

We have a lot of data, but I think sometimes we go beyond data

So I'll just share a third story.

This is about my friend Brennan.

We had played the game one session after school

for many weeks, about seven weeks,

and we had essentially solved all 50 of the interlocking crises.

The World Bank president was a third-grader one time.

But he was setting fiscal policy in that game

for high school players who were playing with him.

من أجل تلاميذ القسم الثانوي الذين كانوا يلعبون معه.

So the team that was the poorest

و بذالك أصبح الفريق الافقر

had gotten even poorer.

أكثر فقرا.

There was no way they could win.

و لم يكن هنالك أي طريقة لكي يربحوا.

And we were approaching four o'clock, our cut-off time --

و كنا نقترب من الساعة الرابعة، ساعة النهاية --

there was about a minute left --

و تبقى هنالك دقيقة واحدة --

and despair just settled over the room.

و حل اليأس على القسم.

I thought, I'm failing as a teacher.

و ظننت أني قد فشلت كمعلم.

I should have gotten it so they could have won.

كان يجب علي أن أتدخل من قبل لكي يربحوا.

They shouldn't be failing like this.

لا يجب أن يخسروا هكذا.

I've failed them.

لقد خذلتهم.

And I was just feeling so sad and dejected.

و لقد كنت أحس بالحزن و الإكتئاب.

And suddenly, Brennan walked over to my chair

و فجأة، مر برينن أمام كرسيي

and he grabbed the bell, the bell I ring

فأخذ الجرس، الجرس الذي أرن

to signal a change or a reconvening of cabinets,

ليعلن عن تغيير أو إعادة توزيع للخزائن،

and he ran back to his seat, rang the bell.

فعاد بسرعة إلى كرسيه، و رن الجرس.

Everybody ran to his chair: there was screaming;

أسرع الكل نحو كراسيهم، كان هنالك ضجيج،

there was yelling, waving of their dossiers.

كان هنالك صراخ، تلويح بالملفات.

They get these dossiers full of secret documents.

يمسكون بهذه الملفات المملوءة بوثائق سرية.

They were gesticulating; they were running around.

كانوا يلوحون، و يركضون في كل الإتجاهات.

I didn't know what they were doing. I'd lost control of my classroom.

لم أكن أعلم ماذا كانوا يفعلون. و قد فقدت السيطرة على القسم.

Principal walks in, I'm out of a job.

إذا مر المدير، فسأفقد عملي.

The parents were looking in the window.

كان الآباء يشاهدون الموقف عبر النافذة.

And Brennan runs back to his seat. Everybody runs back to their seat.

فرجع برينن مسرعا لكرسيه، و عاد الجميع إلى كراسيهم.

He rings the bell again. He says, "We have" --

فرن الجرس مرة أخرى. و قال، "لدينا" --

and there's 12 seconds left on the clock --

و لم يبقى إلا ١٢ ثانية إلى النهاية --

"we have, all nations, pooled all our funds together.

"لقد قامت كل الدول بجمع خزائنهم المالية.

And we've got 600 billion dollars.

و لقد حصلنا على ٦٠٠ مليار دولار.

We're going to offer it as a donation to this poor country.

و سنقوم بتقديم ذلك إلى الدولة الفقيرة.

And if they accept it, it'll raise their asset value and we can win the game.

و إذا قبلوا هذا، سأرفع قيمة أموالهم و سنتمكن من ربح اللعبة.

Will you accept it?"

هل تقبلون؟"

And there are three seconds left on the clock.

و ما يتبقى إلا ثلاث ثواني في الساعة.

Everybody looks at this prime minister of that country,

ينظر الجميع نحو الوزير الأول لهذه الدولة،

and he says, "Yes."

فيقول، "نعم."

And the game is won.

و تربح اللعبة بذلك.

Spontaneous compassion

إحساس شفقة تلقائية

that could not be planned for,

التي لم يكن من الممكن التخطيط لها من قبل،

that was unexpected and unpredictable.

كان هذا غير محتمل و غير متوقع.

Every game we play is different.

تختلف كل جولة نلعبها عن الأخرى.

Some games are more about social issues,

ترتكز بعض الألعاب على المسائل الإجتماعية،

some are more about economic issues.

و يرتكز بعضهم على المسائل الإقتصادية.

Some games are more about warfare.

و يدور البعض أكثر عن الحرب.

But I don't try to deny them that reality of being human.

I allow them to go there

و أسمح لهم بذالك الخوض في ذلك

and, through their own experience, learn, in a bloodless way,

how not to do what they consider to be the wrong thing.

And they find out what is right

their own way, their own selves.

And so in this game,

I've learned so much from it,

but I would say

that if only

they could pick up a critical thinking tool

or creative thinking tool

from this game

and leverage something good for the world,

they may save us all.
