John Hunter: Teaching with the World Peace Game

I'm a public school teacher,

and I just want to share a story of my superintendent.

저희 교육감에 대한 일화를 들려드릴까 합니다.

Her name is Pam Moran

그분 이름은 팜 모란이구요.

in Albemarle County, Virginia,

버지니아주의 알베말 카운티에 계십니다.

the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

블루릿지 산맥의 끝자락에 있는 곳이죠.

And she's a very high-tech superintendent.

She uses smart boards, she blogs,

she Tweets, she does Facebook,

she does all this sort of high-tech stuff.

She's a technology leader and instructional leader.

But in her office,

there's this old wooden, weather-worn table, kitchen table --

peeling green paint, it's kind of rickety.

And I said, "Pam, you're such a modern, cutting-edge person.

Why is this old table in your office?"

And she told me, she said,

"You know, I grew up in Southwestern Virginia,

in the coal mines and the farmlands of rural Virginia,

and this table was in my grandfather's kitchen.

And we'd come in from playing, he'd come in from plowing and working,

And as I grew up, I heard so much knowledge

I began to call it the wisdom table.

And when he passed on, I took this table with me and brought it to my office,

The project I'm going to tell you about

is called the World Peace Game,

and essentially it is also an empty space.

And I'd like to think of it

전 이걸 21세기의

as a 21st century wisdom table, really.

지혜의 테이블이라고 생각합니다.

It all started back in 1977.

1977년으로 거슬러 올라가 보죠.

I was a young man,

and I had been dropping in and out of college.

And my parents were very patient,

but I had been doing intermittent sojourns to India

on a mystical quest.

And I remember the last time I came back from India --

I said, "What is that, dad?" "A job."

And so they pleaded with me to get a degree in something.

So I got a degree

and it turned out to be education.

It was an experimental education program.

It could have been dentistry, but the word "experimental" was in it,

and so that's what I had to go for.

And I went in for a job interview

in the Richmond Public Schools in Virginia, the capital city,

bought a three-piece suit -- my concession to convention --

kept my long beard and my afro

and I walked in, and I sat down and had an interview.

And I guess they were hard up for teachers

because the supervisor, her name was Anna Aro,

said I had the job teaching gifted children.

And I was so shocked, so stunned,

I got up and said, "Well, thank you, but what do I do?"

Gifted education hadn't really taken hold too much.

There weren't really many materials or things to use.

And I said, "What do I do?"

And her answer shocked me. It stunned me.

Her answer set the template

for the entire career I was to have after that.

She said, "What do you want to do?"

And that question cleared the space.

There was no program directive, no manual to follow,

And she cleared such a space

that I endeavored from then on

to clear a space for my students, an empty space,

whereby they could create and make meaning

out of their own understanding.

의미를 부여하면 되는 것이었죠.

So this happened in 1978,

and I was teaching many years later,

and a friend of mine introduced me to a young filmmaker.

This film is called "World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements."

He proposed the film to me -- it's a great title.

He proposed the film to me,

and I said, "Yeah, maybe it'll be on local TV,

and we can say hi to our friends."

But the film has really gone places.

Now it's still in debt, but Chris has managed, through his own sacrifice,

to get this film out.

So we made a film

and it turns out to be more than a story about me,

It's a story that's a testament to teaching and teachers.

And it's a beautiful thing.

And the strange thing is, when I watch the film --

그리고 이상한 건, 이 영화를 볼 때마다

I have the eerie sensation of seeing it --

으스스한 느낌이 들 때가 있습니다.

I saw myself literally disappear.

제 자신은 완전히 사라져 버리고,

What I saw

제 눈에 비치는 건

was my teachers coming through me.

제가 만났던 저의 선생님들의 모습이었습니다.

I saw my geometry teacher in high school, Mr. Rucell's

고등학교때 기하학을 가르쳐 주셨던 러셀 선생님의

wry smile under his handlebar mustache.

팔자수염 아래로 쓴웃음을 짓던 모습이 떠올랐죠.

That's the smile I use -- that's his smile.

저도 그런 미소를 짓곤 합니다. 이런 미소죠.

I saw Jan Polo's flashing eyes.

잔 폴로 선생님의 번뜩이던 눈길도 비춰집니다.

And they weren't flashing in anger,

화가 나서 눈이 번뜩였던 것은 아니구요.

they were flashing in love, intense love for her students.

사랑으로 빛나는, 학생들에 대한 깊은 애정으로 빛나는 눈빛이었죠.

And I have that kind of flash sometimes.

저도 가끔 그런 눈빛을 보내곤 합니다.

And I saw Miss Ethel J. Banks

그리고 에델 뱅크스 선생님의 모습도 보게 됩니다.

who wore pearls and high-heels to elementary school every day.

초등학교에 매일 진주 장신구를 하고 하이힐을 신고 나타나셨죠.

And you know, she had that old-school teacher stare.

그 분은 마치 옛날 선생님처럼 빤히 쳐다보곤 했어요.

You know the one.

이런 시선말이죠.

"And I'm not even talking about you behind me,

because I've got eyes in the back of my head."

You know that teacher?

I didn't use that stare very often,

but I do have it in my repertoire.

And Miss Banks was there as a great mentor for me.

And then I saw

my own parents, my first teachers.

My father, very inventive, spatial thinker.

And really, I feel as though,

I am one of her teaching gestures.

And the beautiful thing was,

I got to teach my daughter in elementary school, Madeline.

초등학생인 제 딸 마들린도 그 동작을 배운다는 거에요.

And so that gesture of my mother's

결국, 제 어머니 특유의 동작이

continues through many generations.

여러 세대를 통해 이어지고 있는거죠.

It's an amazing feeling

그렇게 혈통을 이어간다는게

to have that lineage.

놀랍기만 합니다.

And so I'm here standing on the shoulders of many people.

I'm not here alone.

There are many people on this stage right now.

And so this World Peace Game I'd like to tell you about.

그럼 세계평화게임에 대한 얘기를 들려드리죠.

It started out like this:

이 게임의 시작은

it's just a four-foot by five-foot plywood board

단순한 가로세로 4피트의 합판에서 시작되었습니다.

in an inner-city urban school, 1978.

1978년 한 도심지 학교에서였죠.

I was creating a lesson for students on Africa.

전 아프리카에 관한 수업교재를 만들고 있었습니다.

We put all the problems of the world there,

and I thought, let's let them solve it.

학생들에게 그걸 해결해 보도록 하려고 했죠.

I didn't want to lecture or have just book reading.

I wanted to have them be immersed

아이들이 수업내용에 몰두하면서

and learn the feeling of learning through their bodies.

자신들 몸으로 느끼고 배우도록 하고 싶었습니다.

So I thought, well they like to play games.

그러다가, 아이들은 게임을 좋아한다는 사실이 떠올랐습니다.

I'll make something -- I didn't say interactive;

그래서 뭔가 만들기로 했죠. -- '대화형(상호작용)' 이라는 말은 쓰지 않았는데요.

we didn't have that term in 1978 --

1978년 당시에는 그런 용어가 없었기 때문입니다.

but something interactive.

하지만 대화형 게임같은 것이었어요.

And so we made the game,

그래서 저희는 이 게임을 만들었고,

and it has since evolved

그 후 계속 발전시켜서

to a four-foot by four-foot by four-foot

가로-세로-높이가 각각 4피트인

Plexiglass structure.

아크릴 구조로 진화되었습니다.

And it has four Plexiglass layers.

There's an outer space layer

with black holes and satellites

and research satellites and asteroid mining.

There's an air and space level

with clouds that are big puffs of cotton we push around

and territorial air spaces and air forces,

a ground and sea level with thousands of game pieces on it --

even an undersea level

해저면 층까지 있어서

with submarines and undersea mining.

잠수함이나 해저광산도 존재합니다.

There are four countries around the board.

게임판 주위에는 4개의 국가가 있구요.

The kids make up the names of the countries -- some are rich; some are poor.

아이들이 국가명을 정하고, 부자 나라와 가난한 나라를 결정합니다.

They have different assets, commercial and military.

각 나라별로 자산도 다르고, 경제력이나 군사력도 다르죠.

And each country has a cabinet.

각 나라마다 내각도 있습니다.

There's a Prime Minister, Secretary of State, Minister of Defense

국무총리, 국무장관, 국방장관,

and a CFO, or Comptroller.

재무담당 책임자와 감사원장도 있죠.

I choose the Prime Minister based on my relationship with them.

저는 각 관료들과의 관계를 고려해서 국무총리를 선출합니다.

I offer them the job, they can turn it down,

아이들에게 직책을 제안하면, 아이들은 그걸 거부할 수도 있고,

and then they choose their own cabinet.

아이들은 자기들의 내각을 구성하기도 합니다.

There's a World Bank, arms dealers and a United Nations.

세계 은행도 있고, 무기상이나 UN도 있죠.

There's also a weather goddess

날씨를 관장하는 여신도 있는데요.

who controls a random stock market and random weather.

날씨의 여신이 무작위로 주식시장과 날씨를 조절하죠.

(Laughter)

That's not all.

그게 다가 아니구요.

And then there's a 13-page crisis document

그 뿐 아니라, 13쪽에 달하는 위기상황 문서에는

with 50 interlocking problems.

50가지의 연계 문제들이 담겨 있습니다.

So that, if one thing changes, everything else changes.

그래서 하나의 상황이 바뀌면, 그 외의 모든 것도 변화하게 되죠.

I throw them into this complex matrix,

전 아이들을 이 복잡한 구성 안에 몰아넣습니다.

and they trust me because we have a deep, rich relationship together.

아이들이 저를 따르는 이유는 아이들과 저 사이의 돈독한 관계 덕분이죠.

And so with all these crises,

we have -- let's see -- ethnic and minority tensions;

we have chemical and nuclear spills,

nuclear proliferation.

There's oil spills, environmental disasters,

water rights disputes, breakaway republics,

famine, endangered species and global warming.

If Al Gore is here,

I'm going to send my fourth-graders from Agnor-Hurt and Venable schools to you

애그너 허트와 비너블 초등학교의 4학년 학생들을 당신에게 보내고 싶네요.

because they solved global warming in a week.

그 아이들은 지구온난화를 일주일만에 해결했거든요.

(Laughter)

And they've done it several times too.

So I also have in the game a saboteur --

게임에는 방해공작원도 있습니다.

some child -- it's basically a troublemaker --

and I have my troublemaker put to use

because they, on the surface,

are trying to save the world and their position in the game.

But they're also trying to undermine everything in the game.

And they do it secretly through misinformation

The saboteur is there,

and we also read from Sun Tzu's "The Art of War."

Fourth-graders understand it -- nine years old --

9살인 4학년 학생들도 그 내용을 이해합니다.

and they handle that and use that

아이들은 그 내용을 다루고 활용하면서

to understand how to, not follow --

처음에는 책의 내용대로 따라하지만

at first they do --

권력, 파괴의 과정과

the paths to power and destruction,

the path to war.

이해합니다.

They learn to overlook short-sighted reactions

근시안적인 반응과 충동적인 생각은

and impulsive thinking,

to think in a long-term, more consequential way.

I'm just a clock watcher.

I'm just a clarifier. I'm just a facilitator.

The students run the game.

I have no chance to make any policy whatsoever

once they start playing.

So I'll just share with you ...

because he says his time has messed up a lot,

선생님 세대에는 온통 뒤죽박죽이어서

and he's trying to tell us

how to fix that problem.

알려주기 위한 거라고 하셨어요.

John Hunter: I offered them a --

Actually, I can't tell them anything because I don't know the answer.

사실, 전 아이들에게 무엇도 알려줄 수 없습니다. 저도 해답을 알 수 없으니까요.

And I admit the truth to them right up front: I don't know.

And because I don't know, they've got to dig up the answer.

It's a sincere apology,

and they take it very seriously.

Now you may be wondering what all this complexity looks like.

Well when we have the game start, here's what you see.

JH: My question to you is, who's in charge of that classroom?

JH : 여러분께 묻겠습니다. 누가 이 수업을 담당하죠?

It's a serious question: who is really in charge?

중요한 질문이에요 : 진짜로 누가 담당하고 있을까요?

I've learned to cede control of the classroom

시간이 지나면서 저는 수업의 관리 권한을

over to the students over time.

학생들에게 넘겨줘야 한다는 걸 배웠습니다.

There's a trust and an understanding

처음 교편을 잡았을 때는

and a dedication to an ideal

수업중의 모든 대화와 학생들의 반응을

that I simply don't have to do

통제해야 한다고 생각했지만,

what I thought I had to do as a beginning teacher:

결코 그래서는 안된다는 생각에 대한 믿음과 이해를 얻게 되었고

control every conversation and response in the classroom.

그 생각에 전념하게 되었습니다.

It's impossible. Their collective wisdom

통제는 불가능합니다. 아이들의 공동의 지혜는

is much greater than mine,

저 보다도 훨씬 더 훌륭해요.

and I admit it to them openly.

전 아이들에게 그 점을 솔직히 인정합니다.

So I'll just share with you some stories very quickly

그럼, 여러분께 수업중에 일어났던

of some magical things that have happened.

몇 가지 놀라운 일들을 잠깐 소개해 드리죠.

In this game we had a little girl,

이 게임을 하던 중에 한 작은 소녀가

and she was the Defense Minister of the poorest nation.

가장 가난한 나라의 국방장관을 맡고 있었습니다.

And the Defense Minister -- she had the tank corps and Air Force and so forth.

국방장관인 그 아이는 탱크부대와 공군 같은 것들을 갖고 있었죠.

And she was next door to a very wealthy, oil-rich neighbor.

그리고, 그 나라에는 돈도 많고 기름도 풍부한 나라가 인접해 있었습니다.

Without provocation,

어떠한 도발도 없었는데,

suddenly she attacked, against her Prime Minister's orders,

그 아이는 수상의 명령도 어기고, 갑자기 그 이웃국가의

the next-door neighbor's oil fields.

유전지역을 공격했습니다.

She marched into the oil field reserves,

그 아이는 유전지역의 저장고로 진격해 들어가,

surrounded it, without firing a shot,

그곳을 포위하고, 총 한발 쏘지 않고

and secured it and held it.

그 지역을 확보해서 가져 버렸죠.

And that neighbor was unable to conduct any military operations

그 인접국은 어떠한 군사행동을 취할 수도 없었습니다.

because their fuel supply was locked up.

연료 공급이 차단되었기 때문이었죠.

We were all upset with her, "Why are you doing this?

다들 그 아이에게 화가 나서 물었습니다. "너 왜 그러는거야?

This is the World Peace Game. What is wrong with you?"

이건 세계평화게임이라고. 너 뭐 잘못 먹었냐?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

This was a little girl and, at nine years old,

겨우 아홉 살의 그 여자아이는

she held her pieces and said, "I know what I'm doing."

자기 게임말을 집으며 말했습니다. "내가 뭘 했는지 알아."

To her girlfriends she said that.

그 아이는 친구들에게 그렇게 말했어요.

That's a breach there.

그건 규칙위반이었죠.

And we learned in this, you don't really ever want to cross

이 일을 통해 배운게 하나 있는데요. 탱크를 가진 9살 소녀와는

a nine year-old girl with tanks.

절대 맞닥뜨리면 안 된다는 사실입니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

They are the toughest opponents.

그런 아이가 가장 강력한 적이에요.

And we were very upset.

어쨌든 우리는 무척 화가 났었습니다.

I thought I was failing as a teacher. Why would she do this?

제가 선생님 자질이 없나도 생각했죠. 그 아이는 왜 그런 일을 벌였을까요?

But come to find out, a few game days later --

그런데, 게임상에서 며칠이 지난 뒤에, 그 이유를 알게 되었습니다.

and there are turns where we take negotiation from a team --

게임에서는 순서를 정해서 팀별로 협상 절차를 거치게 되어 있는데요.

actually there's a negotiation period with all teams,

실제로 모든 팀에게는 각각 협상기간이 정해져 있고,

and each team takes a turn,

각 팀이 자기 차례가 되면

then we go back in negotiation, around and around,

협상에 들어가고, 그게 순서대로 돌아갑니다.

so each turn around is one game day.

그래서 한 바퀴 다 돌면, 게임 상의 하루가 지나는 거죠.

So a few game days later it came to light

결국, 게임상의 며칠이 지난 뒤에 밝혀진 사실은,

that we found out this major country

그 강한 국가가

was planning a military offensive

전 세계를 점령하기 위해서

to dominate the entire world.

무력도발을 계획했다는 것이었습니다.

Had they had their fuel supplies, they would have done it.

연료공급망을 갖고 있다면, 누구든지 그렇게 했겠죠.

She was able to see the vectors and trend lines and intentions

그 여자아이는 그렇게 되리라는 진행 방향과 추세, 의도를 누구보다도

long before any of us

훨씬 먼저 간파할 수 있었던 거죠.

and understand what was going to happen

그리고 무슨 일이 일어날지를 파악한 뒤에

and made a philosophical decision

평화게임안에서 공격을 감행하는

to attack in a peace game.

냉철한 판단을 내렸던 것이었습니다.

Now she used a small war to avert a larger war,

그 아이는 대규모 전쟁을 피하기 위해 소규모 전쟁을 이용한 거였습니다.

so we stopped and had a very good philosophical discussion

그래서 우리는 게임을 멈추고, 그 아이의 판단이 옳았는지,

about whether that was right,

조건에 따라 옳고 그름을 따져보는

conditional good, or not right.

냉철한 토론의 시간을 가질 수 있었습니다.

That's the kind of thinking that we put them in, the situations.

그런 상황들이 제가 게임에 포함시키고자 했던 것입니다.

I could not have designed that in teaching it.

그걸 가르치기 위해 미리 계획할 수 없었지만,

It came about spontaneously through their collective wisdom.

아이들의 공동의 지혜를 통해서 자연스럽게 드러나게 된 것이죠.

Another example, a beautiful thing happened.

다른 사례도 있습니다. 정말 놀라운 일이 있었죠.

We have a letter in the game.

게임안에서 편지를 쓰기도 하는데요.

If you're a military commander and you wage troops --

만약 여러분이 군 사령관이고, 군대를 전쟁에 내보냈을 때 --

the little plastic toys on the board -- and you lose them,

군대는 게임판의 작은 플라스틱 장난감이구요 -- 그 병사들이 전사하면,

I put in a letter.

편지를 쓰게 합니다.

You have to write a letter to their parents --

여러분은 그 병사의 부모에게 편지를 써야 해요.

the fictional parents of your fictional troops --

가상의 병사들의 가상의 부모님들께 말이죠.

explaining what happened and offering your condolences.

전장에서 일어난 일들을 설명하고 애도의 뜻을 전하도록 하죠.

So you have a little bit more thought

그 때문에 여러분은 전투를 벌이기 전에

before you commit to combat.

한번 더 잠시 생각해 보게 되죠.

And so we had this situation come up --

그래서 이런 일이 벌어졌습니다.

last summer actually,

지난 여름이었는데요,

at Agnor-Hurt School in Albemarle County --

앨버말 카운티의 애그너 허트 초등학교에서 있었던 일입니다.

and one of our military commanders got up to read that letter

군사령관 중의 한 명이 일어나서 그 편지를 읽었고,

and one of the other kids said, "Mr. Hunter,

한 아이가 이렇게 말했습니다.

let's ask -- there's a parent over there."

"헌터 선생님. 저기 부모님이 계신데요. 그분께 -- "

There was a parent visiting that day, just sitting in the back of the room.

그 날 마침 한 부모님이 방문해서, 교실 뒤에 앉아 계셨거든요.

"Let's ask that mom to read the letter.

"저기 계신 엄마에게 편지를 읽어달라고 하죠.

It'll be more realer if she reads it."

그러면 더 실감날 거 같아요."

So we did, we asked her, and she gamely picked up the letter.

그래서 우리는 그 분께 부탁했고, 그녀는 편지를 집어들었습니다.

"Sure." She started reading. She read one sentence.

"그러죠." 그녀는 편지를 읽기 시작했습니다. 한 줄을 읽고,

She read two sentences.

두 번째 줄을 읽고,

By the third sentence, she was in tears.

세 번째 줄을 읽으면서 그녀는 울고 있었습니다.

I was in tears.

저도 울었죠.

Everybody understood

전투에서 병사들을 잃었다면,

that when we lose somebody, the winners are not gloating.

전쟁에서 승리해도 기쁘지 않다는 사실을 모두가 알게 되었습니다.

We all lose.

우리 모두 전쟁에서 진 셈이죠.

And it was an amazing occurrence and an amazing understanding.

이 것은 놀라운 사건이었고, 대단한 교훈이었습니다.

I'll show you what my friend David says about this.

데이빗이라는 친구가 한 말을 보여드리죠.

He's been in many battles.

그는 많은 전투에 참전했었습니다.

(Video) David: We've really had enough of people attacking.

(비디오) 데이빗 : 우리는 지금까지 많은 사람들을 공격했어요.

I mean, we've been lucky [most of] the time.

말하자면, 우리는 그 동안 운이 좋았죠.

But now I'm feeling really weird

그런데 지금 정말 이상한 느낌이 들어요.

because I'm living what Sun Tzu said one week.

왜냐하면 손자가 한 말대로 살았거든요. 1주일동안,

One week he said,

일주일 동안, 그의 말이

"Those who go into battle and win

전쟁에서 이긴 자는

will want to go back,

집으로 돌아 가길 원할 것이고,

and those who lose in battle

전쟁에서 패배한 자는

will want to go back and win."

전장으로 돌아가 승리하길 원할 것이다."

And so I've been winning battles,

저는 그 동안 많은 전투에서 이겼고,

so I'm going into battles, more battles.

그 때문에 더 많은 전투에서 싸워야 되겠죠.

And I think it's sort of weird to be living

손자의 말대로 사는 건 참 이상하다는

what Sun Tzu said.

생각이 들어요.

JH: I get chills every time I see that.

JH : 이 장면을 볼 때마다 오싹함을 느낍니다.

That's the kind of engagement you want to have happen.

이런 것이 여러분이 원하는 일종의 참여수업이죠.

And I can't design that, I can't plan that,

이런 내용을 미리 설계하거나 계획할 수도 없고,

and I can't even test that.

미리 테스트도 해 볼 수 없습니다.

But it's self-evident assessment.

하지만 그 학습결과를 스스로 증명하고 있습니다.

We know that's an authentic assessment of learning.

이런 것이 진정한 학습의 결과입니다.

We have a lot of data, but I think sometimes we go beyond data

많은 정보를 가졌더라도, 가끔은 사건의 진상이 그 정보와는

with the real truth of what's going on.

일치하지 않을 때도 있다는 생각이 듭니다.

So I'll just share a third story.

그럼 세번째 이야기를 소개하죠.

This is about my friend Brennan.

브래넌 이라는 친구의 이야기입니다.

We had played the game one session after school

우리는 방과후에 이 게임을 몇 주 동안,

for many weeks, about seven weeks,

한 7주 동안 게임을 했습니다.

and we had essentially solved all 50 of the interlocking crises.

그러면서 50개의 연계위기 상황을 해결했죠.

The way the game is won is all 50 problems have to be solved

게임에서 이기려면 50개의 문제를 해결하고,

and every country's asset value

모든 나라의 자산가치를

has to be increased above its starting point.

처음 시작할 때보다 증가시켜야 합니다.

Some are poor, some are wealthy. There are billions.

어떤 나라는 가난하고, 어떤나라는 부자죠. 수십억의 자산을 가집니다.

The World Bank president was a third-grader one time.

한번은 3학년 학생이 세계은행 총장을 맡게 되었습니다.

He says, "How many zeros in a trillion? I've got to calculate that right away."

그 아이가 이렇게 말했죠. "1조면 0이 몇개죠? 지금 계산해봐야 겠어요"

But he was setting fiscal policy in that game

그리고는 함께 게임하던 고등학생들을 위해

for high school players who were playing with him.

재정 정책을 세우기 시작했습니다.

So the team that was the poorest

그 때문에, 가장 가난했던 한 팀은

had gotten even poorer.

더욱 가난해졌죠.

There was no way they could win.

게임에서 이길 방법은 없었습니다.

And we were approaching four o'clock, our cut-off time --

시간도 마칠 시간인 4시에 가까워져 있었구요 --

there was about a minute left --

한 1분 정도 남았었죠 --

and despair just settled over the room.

교실에는 체념의 기운이 감돌았습니다.

I thought, I'm failing as a teacher.

제가 지도를 잘 못했다고 생각했습니다.

I should have gotten it so they could have won.

그 상황을 막았더라면 게임을 이겼을 수도 있고,

They shouldn't be failing like this.

이 정도까지 실패하지 않았을 거라고 생각했죠.

I've failed them.

제가 아이들을 망친거였죠.

And I was just feeling so sad and dejected.

전 속상하고 낙심해 있었습니다.

And suddenly, Brennan walked over to my chair

그런데 갑자기, 브레넌이 제 자리로 걸어오더니

and he grabbed the bell, the bell I ring

종을 집어 들었습니다. 제가 내각을 교체하거나

to signal a change or a reconvening of cabinets,

각료회의를 소집할 때 울리는 종이 있는데요.

and he ran back to his seat, rang the bell.

그 아이가 그 종을 울리고는 자기 자리로 돌아가더군요.

Everybody ran to his chair: there was screaming;

모두가 그 아이에게 달려들었습니다. 비명지르는 아이도 있었고,

there was yelling, waving of their dossiers.

소리치거나 서류를 흔드는 아이들도 있었습니다.

They get these dossiers full of secret documents.

비밀문서가 담겨진 서류뭉치를 가지고 있었거든요.

They were gesticulating; they were running around.

삿대질하는 아이도 있고, 주변을 뛰어다니기도 했습니다.

I didn't know what they were doing. I'd lost control of my classroom.

전 아이들의 행동을 이해할 수 없었어요. 수업을 통제할 수 없었죠.

Principal walks in, I'm out of a job.

교장선생님이 왔더라면, 전 해고 당했을 거에요.

The parents were looking in the window.

부모님들도 창 넘어 보고 계셨어요.

And Brennan runs back to his seat. Everybody runs back to their seat.

그리고는 브레넌이 자기 자리로 돌아갔고, 모두 제 자리에 앉았습니다.

He rings the bell again. He says, "We have" --

그 아이는 벨을 한번 더 울리며, 이렇게 말했습니다.

and there's 12 seconds left on the clock --

그 때가 시간이 12초 정도 남았을 때였죠.

"we have, all nations, pooled all our funds together.

"세계은행이 모든 자금을 끌어모았고, 모든 나라가 가난해졌습니다.

And we've got 600 billion dollars.

세계은행에는 6000억불이 있습니다.

We're going to offer it as a donation to this poor country.

이 돈을 이 가난한 나라에 기부하려고 합니다.

And if they accept it, it'll raise their asset value and we can win the game.

만약 그 나라에서 이걸 수용하면, 국가 자산가치를 올리게 되고, 그럼 우리는 게임을 이기게 되죠"

Will you accept it?"

받아 들이시겠습니까?"

And there are three seconds left on the clock.

시간이 3초 정도 남았을 때였습니다.

Everybody looks at this prime minister of that country,

모두가 그 나라의 국무총리만 바라보고 있었죠.

and he says, "Yes."

그리고 그가 말했습니다. "네. "

And the game is won.

그리고 게임은 이긴 것으로 끝났습니다.

Spontaneous compassion

그것은 전혀 계획되지 않은

that could not be planned for,

자발적인 동정심이었습니다.

that was unexpected and unpredictable.

뜻 밖이었고, 예측할 수도 없는 상황이었죠.

Every game we play is different.

게임을 할 때마다 상황은 다릅니다.

Some games are more about social issues,

어떤 게임에서는 사회문제가 중요할 때가 있고,

some are more about economic issues.

어떤 때는 경제문제가 중요할 때도 있죠.

Some games are more about warfare.

어떤 게임에서는 전쟁문제가 대두되기도 합니다.

But I don't try to deny them that reality of being human.

하지만 그런 상황을 피하려고 하지는 않아요. 그게 사람사는 곳의 현실이니까요.

I allow them to go there

저는 아이들로 하여금 그 일에 부딪히도록 하고

and, through their own experience, learn, in a bloodless way,

아이들 자신의 경험을 통해서, 피해를 보지 않는 방법으로

how not to do what they consider to be the wrong thing.

나쁘다고 생각하는 일들을 하지 않는 방법을 배우도록 합니다.

And they find out what is right

그러면 아이들은 무엇이 옳은 길인지를

their own way, their own selves.

자기들만의 방법으로 스스로 찾아내죠.

And so in this game,

그리고 이 게임을 통해서

I've learned so much from it,

저도 많은 것을 배웠습니다.

but I would say

제가 드리고 싶은 말씀은

that if only

만약

they could pick up a critical thinking tool

이 아이들이 이 게임을 통해서

or creative thinking tool

옳고 그름의 판단력이 생기고

from this game

창조적인 사고 방식을 갖게 되고

and leverage something good for the world,

세상을 이롭게 할 영향력을 얻게 된다면

they may save us all.

그들이 우리 모두를 구원할 지도 모릅니다.

If only.

게임을 통해 배울 수만 있다면 말이죠.
