I'm here today to talk about the two ideas that,

I saw this in the early days working with my cousins.

A lot of them were having trouble with math at first,

because they had all of these gaps accumulated in their learning.

I saw it in the early days

And at first, those comments were just simple thank-yous.

I thought that was a pretty big deal.

Most of the comments are not "Thank you."

They're a little edgier than that.

But then the comments got a little more intense,

student after student saying that they had grown up not liking math.

It was getting difficult as they got into more advanced math topics.

By the time they got to algebra,

They found resources like Khan Academy

and they were able to fill in those gaps and master those concepts,

and that reinforced their mindset that it wasn't fixed;

that they actually were capable of learning mathematics.

And in a lot of ways, this is how you would master a lot of things in life.

It's the way you would learn a martial art.

In a martial art, you would practice the white belt skills

as long as necessary,

and only when you've mastered it

you would move on to become a yellow belt.

It's the way you learn a musical instrument:

you practice the basic piece over and over again,

and only when you've mastered it,

you go on to the more advanced one.

But what we point out --

this is not the way a traditional academic model is structured,

the type of academic model that most of us grew up in.

In a traditional academic model,

we group students together, usually by age,

and around middle school,

And what typically happens,

then we'll go home, do some homework.

The next morning, we'll review the homework,

then another lecture, homework, lecture, homework.

That will continue for about two or three weeks,

and then we get a test.

On that test, maybe I get a 75 percent,

And even though the test identified gaps in our knowledge,

I didn't know 25 percent of the material.

Even the A student, what was the five percent they didn't know?

Even though we've identified the gaps,

the whole class will then move on to the next subject,

It might be logarithms or negative exponents.

And that process continues, and you immediately start to realize

how strange this is.

I didn't know 25 percent of the more foundational thing,

and now I'm being pushed to the more advanced thing.

And this will continue for months, years, all the way until at some point,

I might be in an algebra class or trigonometry class

and I hit a wall.

And it's not because algebra is fundamentally difficult

or because the student isn't bright.

It's because I'm seeing an equation and they're dealing with exponents

and that 30 percent that I didn't know is showing up.

And then I start to disengage.

To appreciate how absurd that is,

imagine if we did other things in our life that way.

Say, home-building.

ဥပမာ၊ အိမ်ဆောက်မှု ဆိုပါစို့။

So we bring in the contractor and say,

ကန်ထရိုက်သမားကို ခေါ်လာပြီး၊

"We were told we have two weeks to build a foundation.

“အုတ်မြစ် ဆောက်ဖို့ အချိန် နှစ်ပတ်ရှိတယ်လို့ ဆိုတယ်။

Do what you can."

So they do what they can.

Maybe it rains.

Maybe some of the supplies don't show up.

And two weeks later, the inspector comes, looks around,

Same thing.

အလားတူပါပဲ။

We have two weeks, do what you can, inspector shows up, it's a 75 percent.

Great, that's a D-plus.

Second floor, third floor,

and all of a sudden, while you're building the third floor,

the whole structure collapses.

And if your reaction is the reaction you typically have in education,

or that a lot of folks have,

you might say, maybe we had a bad contractor,

or maybe we needed better inspection or more frequent inspection.

But what was really broken was the process.

We were artificially constraining how long we had to something,

pretty much ensuring a variable outcome,

Instead of artificially constraining, fixing

What's variable is when and how long

a student actually has to work on something,

and what's fixed is that they actually master the material.

And it's important to realize

that not only will this make the student learn their exponents better,

It makes them realize that if you got 20 percent wrong on something,

it doesn't mean that you have a C branded in your DNA somehow.

It means that you should just keep working on it.

You should have grit; you should have perseverance;

you should take agency over your learning.

Now, a lot of skeptics might say, well, hey, this is all great,

philosophically, this whole idea of mastery-based learning

students taking agency over their learning.

It makes a lot of sense, but it seems impractical.

To actually do it, every student would be on their own track.

It would have to be personalized,

you'd have to have private tutors and worksheets for every student.

And these aren't new ideas --

there were experiments in Winnetka, Illinois, 100 years ago,

where they did mastery-based learning and saw great results,

but they said it wouldn't scale because it was logistically difficult.

The teacher had to give different worksheets to every student,

But now today, it's no longer impractical.

We have the tools to do it.

They need practice? They need feedback?

There's adaptive exercises readily available for students.

And when that happens, all sorts of neat things happen.

One, the students can actually master the concepts,

but they're also building their growth mindset,

သူတို့ရဲ့ သင်ယူမှုကို ဂရုစိုက်လာတယ်။

And all sorts of beautiful things can start to happen

အဲဒါနဲ့ ကြည်နူးစရာ အရာတွေ အတန်းထဲမှာ

in the actual classroom.

Instead of it being focused on the lecture,

ကျောင်းသားတွေရဲ့ အာရုံက ပို့ချမှု အစား

students can interact with each other.

အချင်းချင်း တုံ့ပြန်မှုကို အလေးပေးတယ်။

They can get deeper mastery over the material.

သူတို့ သင်ယူနေတာကို ပိုကျွမ်းလာနိုင်တယ်။

They can go into simulations, Socratic dialogue.

To appreciate what we're talking about

I'd like to give a little bit of a thought experiment.

If we were to go 400 years into the past to Western Europe,

which even then, was one of the more literate parts of the planet,

And I suspect that if you asked someone who did know how to read,

say a member of the clergy,

"What percentage of the population do you think is even capable of reading?"

They might say, "Well, with a great education system,

“ပညာရေးစနစ် ဒီလောက်ကြီး ကောင်းတယ်ဆိုတော့

maybe 20 or 30 percent."

၂၀ မှ ၃၀ ရာခိုင်နှုန်း ရှိမယ်” ဖြေကြားခဲ့မှာပါ။

But if you fast forward to today,

ဒါနဲ့ ဒီခေတ်ဆီကို ပြန်လာရင်၊

we know that that prediction would have been wildly pessimistic,

အဲဒီလို ခန့်မှန်းမှုဟာ အတော့ကို စိတ်ပျက်စရာ ကောင်းမှာပါ၊

that pretty close to 100 percent of the population is capable of reading.

ပြည်သူ ၁၀၀ ရာခိုင်နှုန်းနီးပါးဟာ ဖတ်နိုင်စွမ်း ရှိနေကြတယ်။

But if I were to ask you a similar question:

ဒါပေမဲ့ အလားတူ မေးခွန်းကိုပဲ၊

"What percentage of the population do you think is capable

“ပြည်သူတွေ ရာခိုင်နှုန်း ဘယ်လောက် တကယ့်ကို

of truly mastering calculus,

ကဲကုလကို ကျွမ်းကျင်စွာ ပိုင်နိုင်ကြလဲ၊

or understanding organic chemistry,

ဇီဝဓာတုဗေဒကို နားလည်ကြလဲ၊

or being able to contribute to cancer research?"

ကင်ဆာ သုတေသနကို လုပ်နိုင်စွမ်း ရှိကြလဲ” မေးကြည့်ပါ။

A lot of you might say, "Well, with a great education system,

တော်တော်များများက၊ “ဒီလောက် ကောင်းတဲ့ ပညာရေးစနစ်ကြီးနဲဆိုရင်၊

maybe 20, 30 percent."

၂၀ မှ ၃၀ ရာခိုင်နှုန်း ရှိမယ်” ဖြေမှာပါ။

But what if that estimate

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒီခန့်မှန်းမှုဟာ

is just based on your own experience in a non-mastery framework,

ကိုယ်ကိုယ်တိုင်ရဲ့ ပိုင်နိုင်မှုမရှိတဲ့ အခြေခံကြောင့်၊

your own experience with yourself or observing your peers,

ကိုယ်တိုင်ရဲ့ အတွေ့အကြုံ ဒါမှမဟုတ် ရွယ်တူတွေကို ကြည့်လျက်၊

where you're being pushed at this set pace through classes,

သတ်မှတ်ချိန်မှာ အတန်းတွေ တစ်ခုပြီးတစ်ခု တက်ခဲ့ကာ ဟာကွက်တွေ

accumulating all these gaps?

စုစည်းလာခဲ့မှုကြောင့်လား။

Even when you got that 95 percent,

ခင်ဗျား ၉၅ ရာခိုင်နှုန်း ရတောင်

what was that five percent you missed?

လွတ်သွားတဲ့ ၅ ရာခိုင်နှုန်းက ဘာများလဲ။

And it keeps accumulating -- you get to an advanced class,

အတန်းကို တဆင့်ထပ်တက်လိုက်တော အဲဒါတွေ စုစည်းလာတယ်၊

all of a sudden you hit a wall and say,

ရုတ်ခနဲ နံရံကြီးနဲ့ ကိုယ်ဝင်ဆောင့်မိရော

"I'm not meant to be a cancer researcher;

“ငါ ကင်ဆာ သုတေသီ ဘယ်ဖြစ်နိုင်မလဲ၊

not meant to be a physicist; not meant to be a mathematician."

ဆရာဝန် မဖြစ်နိုင်ဘူး၊ သင်္ချာဆရာ မဖြစ်နိုင်ဘူး။“

I suspect that that actually is the case,

လက်တွေ့မှာ အဲဒီလို ဖြစ်နေတယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်၊

but if you were allowed to be operating in a mastery framework,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ခင်ဗျားတို့ကို ကျွမ်းကျင်ဖို့ လုပ်ကိုင်ခွင့် ပေးခဲ့မယ်ဆိုရင်၊

if you were allowed to really take agency over your learning,

ခင်ဗျားတို့ကို ခင်ဗျားတို့ရဲ့ ပညာရေးကို စီမံဆုံးဖြတ်ခွင့် တကယ် ပေးခဲ့ရင်

and when you get something wrong,

ကိုယ် တစ်ခုခု မှားပြီး လုပ်မိရင်၊

embrace it -- view that failure as a moment of learning --

that number, the percent that could really master calculus

is actually a lot closer to 100 percent.

လက်တွေ့တွင် ၁၀၀ ရာခိုင်နှုန်းနား ကပ်လာမှာပါ။

And this isn't even just a "nice to have."

ပြီးတော့ ဒါက “အဲဒီလိုဖြစ်ခဲ့ရင် ကောင်းသား” လို့ ပြောစရာသာမက၊

I think it's a social imperative.

လူမှုရေး တောင်းဆိုချက်လို့ ကျွန်တော် ထင်တယ်။

We're exiting what you could call the industrial age

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ စက်မှုခေတ်ကြီးကို စိတ်လှုပ်ရှားနေကြရတယ်၊

and we're going into this information revolution.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ အချက်အလက်များရဲ့ တော်လှန်ရေးကို ဆင်နွှဲဖို့ ရှိနေတယ်။

And it's clear that some things are happening.

တကယ်လဲ အချို့အရာတွေ ဖြစ်ပျက်နေတာ အမှန်ပါပဲ။

In the industrial age, society was a pyramid.

စက်မှုခေတ်ကြီးထဲ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းက ပိရမစ်ပုံပါ။

At the base of the pyramid, you needed human labor.

ပိရမစ်ရဲ့ အခြေခံတွင် လူသားရဲ့ လုပ်အား လိုအပ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

In the middle of the pyramid, you had an information processing,

ပိရမစ် အလယ်မှာကျတော့ အချက်အလက်များကို စီမံလုပ်ကိုင်တဲ့

a bureaucracy class,

ဗြူရိုကရေစီ လူတန်းစား ရှိခဲ့တယ်၊

and at the top of the pyramid, you had your owners of capital

and your entrepreneurs

စွန့်ဦးတီထွင်ပညာရှင်တွေ၊

and your creative class.

But we know what's happening already,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဖြစ်ပျက်နေတာကို သိကြတယ်

as we go into this information revolution.

အချက်အလက်များရဲ့ တော်လှန်ရေးထဲ ဝင်နေကြတယ်။

The bottom of that pyramid, automation, is going to take over.

ခုနက ပိရမစ်ရဲ့ အုတ်မြစ်ကို အလိုအလျောက် စက်တွေ ဝင်နေရာယူကြမယ်။

Even that middle tier, information processing,

အလယ်ပိုင်း၊ အချက်အလက်များ စီမံ လုပ်ကိုင်ရေးကို

that's what computers are good at.

ကွန်ပျူတာတွေ တော်ကြတယ်။

So as a society, we have a question:

ဒီတော့ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းအနေနဲ့ မေးစရာက-

All this new productivity is happening because of this technology,

ဒီလို ဖြစ်ရပ်အသစ်တွေကို မြင်နေကြရတာက နည်းပညာတွေကြောင့်ပါ၊

but who participates in it?

အဲဒီထဲ ပါဝင်ကြတာက ဘယ်သူလဲ။

Is it just going to be that very top of the pyramid, in which case,

အဲဒီသူတွေဟာ ပိရမစ်ရဲ့ ထိပ်ပိုင်း ဖြစ်လာကြမယ်ဆိုတော့၊

what does everyone else do?

ကျန်သူတွေက ဘာကိုလုပ်ကြမလဲ။

How do they operate?

သူတို့ ဘယ်လို လုပ်ကြလဲ။

Or do we do something that's more aspirational?

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ ပိုပြီး အားကျစရာကို လုပ်နေကြလား။

Do we actually attempt to invert the pyramid,

ကြီးမားတဲ့ တီထွင်ရေး လူတန်းစား ရှိမယ့်၊

where you have a large creative class,

လူတိုင်းလိုလို စွန့်ဦးလုပ်ငန်းရှင်တွေအဖြစ်

where almost everyone can participate as an entrepreneur,

အနုပညာရှင်၊ သုတေသီအဖြစ်၊ ပါဝင်နိုင်ဖို့အတွက်

an artist, as a researcher?

ပိရမစ်ကို လှန်ပစ်ရင် ကောင်းမလား။

And I don't think that this is utopian.

ဘယ်လိုမှ မဖြစ်နိုင်တဲ့ စိတ်ကူးမဟုတ်ပါ။

I really think that this is all based on the idea

ဒါအားလုံးဟာ ပြည်သူတွေကို သူတို့ရဲ့ အစွမ်းအစတွေကို

that if we let people tap into their potential

ဖွင့်သုံးခွင့်ကို ဖန်တီးပေးလိုက်ကာ

by mastering concepts,

အသိပညာတွေကို ကျွမ်းကျင်အောင် လုပ်ပေးလျက်

by being able to exercise agency over their learning,

ကိုယ့်ပညာရေးကို ကိုယ်တိုင် ဂရုစိုက် လုပ်ပိုင်ခွင့်ကို ပေးလိုက်ရင်၊

that they can get there.

သူတို့ အဲဒီကို ရောက်ကြမယ်။

And when you think of it as just a citizen of the world,

အဲဒီနောက် သူတို့ဟာ ကမ္ဘာ့နိုင်ငံသား တစ်ဦးဖြစ်လာမှာမို့

it's pretty exciting.

စိတ်လှုပ်ရှားစရာကြီးပါ။

I mean, think about the type of equity we can we have,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဆီမှာ ရှိလာနိုင်မယ့် ကြွယ်ဝချမ်းသာမှုတွေ၊

and the rate at which civilization could even progress.

လူ့ယဉ်ကျေးမှု တိုးတက်နိုင်မယ့် နှုန်းကို စိတ်ကူးကြည့်ကြပါ။

And so, I'm pretty optimistic about it.

ကျွန်တော်ကတော့ အဲဒါကို သိပ်ကို အကောင်းမြင်တယ်။

I think it's going to be a pretty exciting time to be alive.
