ناوم نانفووە.

My name is Nanfu.

In Chinese, "nan" means "man."

لە چینی، "نان" واتا "پیاو".

And "fu" means "pillar."

"فو"ش واتا "کۆڵەکە".

My family had hoped for a boy,

خێزانەکەم خوازیاری منداڵێکی کوڕ بوون،

who would grow up to be the pillar of the family.

کە گەورە بێت و ببێتە کۆڵەکەی خێزانەکە.

And when I turned out to be a girl,

کە دەرکەوت کچم،

they named me Nanfu anyway.

هەر ناویان نام "نانفوو".

I was born in 1985,

لە ساڵی 1985 لە دایک بووم،

six years before China announced its one-child policy.

شەش ساڵ پێش ڕاگەیاندی یاسای هەبوونی یەک منداڵی لە چین.

Right after I was born,

ڕێک دوای ئەوای لە دایکبووم،

the local officials came and ordered my mom to be sterilized.

کارگێڕی ناوخۆ داوایان لە دایکم کرد کە ببێتە خەسێنراو.

My grandpa stood up to the officials,

باپیرم دژی کارگێرەکان وەستایەوە،

چونکە نەوەیەکی کوڕی دەویست بۆ ئەوەی ناوی خێزانەکە هەڵبگرێت.

because he wanted a grandson to carry on the family name.

Eventually, my parents were allowed to have a second child,

لەناکاو، خێزانەکەم ڕیگەیان پێدرا منداڵی دووەمیان ببێت.

but they had to wait for five years

بەڵام دەبوو پێنج ساڵ چاوەڕێ بکەن.

and pay a substantial fine.

و باجێکی زۆر بە حوکمەت بدەن.

Growing up, my brother and I

من و براکەم گەورە بووین،

were surrounded by children from one-child families.

دەوروبەرمان پڕبوون لەو خێزانانەی کەیەک منداڵیان هەبوو.

I remember feeling a sense of shame

لە بیرمە هەستم بە شەرم دەکرد.

because I had a younger brother.

چونکە برایەکی بچوکم هەبوو.

I felt like our family did something wrong for having two children.

هەستم دەکرد خێزانەکەم هەڵەیەکی گەورەیان کردووە بە هەبوونی دوو منداڵ.

At the time, I didn't question

لەو کاتە پرسیارێکم کرد

where this sense of shame and guilt came from.

ئەو هەستی تاوان و شەرمە لە کوێووە سەریهەڵداوە.

A year and a half ago, I had my own first child.

ساڵ و نیوێک پێش ئێستا، منداڵی یەکەمم لە دایک بوو

It was the best thing that ever happened in my life.

باشترین ڕووداوی ژیانم بوو.

Becoming a mother

بوون بە دایک

gave me a totally new perspective on my own childhood,

تێروانینێکی نوێی بە منداڵیم بەخشی،

and it brought back my memories of early life in China.

ئەمە یادەوەری منداڵیمی بیرخستمەوە لە چین.

For the past three decades,

لە سی ساڵی ڕابردوو،

everyone in my family had to apply for a permission from the government

هەموو ئەندامانی خێزانەکەم دەبوو ڕێگەپێدان لە حوکمەت وەرگرن

to have a child.

بۆ هەبوونی منداڵ.

And I wondered

خوازیاربووم بزانم

what it was like for people who lived under the one-child policy.

ژیانی ئەو کەسانە چۆنە کە لەژێر یاسای هەبوونی یەک منداڵی ژیاون.

So I decided to make a documentary about it.

بۆیە بڕیامدا چەند دیکۆمێنتاریەک لەسەر ئەو بابەتە ئامادە بکەم،

One of the people I interviewed

یەکێک لەو کەسانەی کە دواندم

was the midwife who delivered all of the babies born in my village,

مامان بوو، مامانی بۆ هەموو منداڵانی لە دایکبووی گوندەکەمان کردبوو،

including myself.

تەنانەت بۆ منیش.

She was 84 years old when I interviewed her.

تەمەنی ٨٤ ساڵ بوو کە دواندم.

I asked her,

پرسیارم لێکرد،

"Do you remember how many babies you delivered throughout your career?"

" لە بیرتە بە درێژای ماوەی پیشەکەت مامانیت بۆ چەند منداڵ کردووە؟'

She didn't have a number for deliveries.

ژمارەی لە دایکبووانی نەدەزانی.

She said she had performed

بەڵام گوتی کە

60,000 forced abortions and sterilizations.

٦٠،٠٠٠ منداڵی بە زۆر لێکردن لەبار بردووە و خەساندنی کردووە.

Sometimes, she said,

هەروەها گوتیشی،

a late-term fetus would survive an abortion,

کۆرپە درەنگ لە دایکبووەکان لە لەبارچوون ڕزگاریان دەبوو.

and she would kill the baby after delivering it.

و لەدوای مامانی کردنەکە منداڵەکانی دەکوشت.

She remembered how her hands would tremble

بەبیری دەهاتەوە کە چۆن دەستەکانی دەلەرزین

as she did the work.

کاتێک کە کارەکەی کردووە.

Her story shocked me.

چیرۆکەکەی دایخورپاندم.

When I set out to make the film,

کاتێک بڕیارمدا فیلمەکە دروست بکەم،

پێشبینیم دەکرد چیرۆکێکی سادەبێت لە سەر تاوانکاری و قوربانی،

I expected it would be a simple story of perpetrators and victims.

People who carried out the policy

ئەو کەسانەی کە ئەو یاسایەیان جێبەجێکرد

and people who are living with the consequences.

و ئەو خەڵکانەی لەگەڵ ئاکامەکەی دەژیەن.

But that wasn't what I saw.

بەڵام ئەوە نەبوو بینیم.

As I was finishing my interview with the midwife,

کاتێک چاوپێکەوتنەکەم لەگەڵ مامانەکە تەواو کرد،

I noticed an area in her house

تێبینی گۆشەیەکی ماڵەکەیم کرد

that was decorated with elaborate homemade flags.

بە چەند ئاڵایەکی دەستکرد ڕازێندرابووەوە.

And each flag has a picture of a baby on it.

هەر ئاڵایەک وێنەی منداڵێکی لە سەر بوو.

These were flags that were sent by families

ئەو ئاڵایانە لەلایەن ئەو خێزانانە نێردرابوون

whom she helped treat their infertility problems.

کە یارمەتیدابوون لە چارەسەرەری کێشەی نەزۆکی.

She explained that she had had enough

ڕوونیکردەوە کە ماندوو بووە

of performing abortions and sterilizations --

لە کاری لەباربردن و خەساندن.

that the only work she did now was to help families have babies.

تاکە کاری ئەو لە ئێستادا مامانی کردنە بۆ لەدایک بوونی منداڵان.

She said she was full of guilt

گوتی هەستی بە تاوانکردووە

for carrying out the one-child policy,

لە جێبەجێکردنی یاسای هەبوونی یەک منداڵ

and she hoped that by helping families have babies,

هیوادار بوو بە مامانیکردن بۆ منداڵە تازە لە دایک بووەکان،

she could counteract what she did in the past.

بۆ قەرەبووکردنەوەی ئەو کارانەی لە ڕابردوو ئەنجامیداوە.

It became clear to me she, too, was a victim of the policy.

بۆم ڕوون بۆیەوە، کە ئەویش قوربانیەکی یاسایەکەیە،

Every voice was telling her

هەمووان پێیان دەگوت

that what she did was right and necessary for China's survival.

ئەو کارەی ئەو ڕاست و پێویستە بۆ ڕزگاربوونی چین.

And she did what she thought was right for her country.

و ئەویش ئەو کارەی کردووە کە بۆ وڵاتەکەی باش بووە.

I know how strong that message was.

دەزانم ئەم پەیامە چەند بەهێزە.

It was everywhere around myself when I grew up.

لە تەواوی دەوروبەرم بوو لە کاتی گەورە بوونم،

It was printed on matches,

لە سەر پاکەتی شقارتە چاپکرابوو

playing cards,

یاری کارت،

textbooks, posters.

کتێب، پۆستەر.

The propaganda praising the one-child policy

پڕوپاگاندەکان پشتگیری یاساکە دەکەن

was everywhere around us.

لە تەواوی دەوروبەرمان بوون،

[Anyone who refuses to sterilize will be arrested.]

[هەرکەسێک ڕەتی کردبایەوە بخەسێنرێت ئەوا دەستگیردەکرا[

And so were the threats against disobeying it.

تۆقاندن دژ بە بەرهەڵستکارەکان بەکاردەهات.

The message seeped into our minds

پەیامەکە لە مێشکمان چەسپابوو

so much so that I grew up feeling embarrassed

هەربۆیە بە شەرمەزارییەوە گەورە بووم

for having a younger brother.

چونکە برایەکی بچووکم هەبوو.

With each person I filmed,

هەر کەسێک لەوانەی کە دواندم،

I saw how their minds and hearts can be influenced by the propaganda,

بینیم چۆن دڵ و مێشکیان کەوتبووە ژێر کاریگەری پروپاگەندەکە،

and how their willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good

و ئامادەبونیان تا قوربانی بدەن بۆ چاکەی گشتی

can be twisted into something very dark and tragic.

کە دەکردێت زۆر خەمناک و تراژیدی بیت.

China is not the only place where this happens.

چین تاکە وڵات نییە کە ئەمەی بە سەر هاتبێت.

There is no country on earth where propaganda isn't present.

هیچ وڵاتێک نییە پروپاگاندەی نەبێت.

And in societies that are supposed to be more open and free than China,

هەروەها لەو کۆمەڵگەیەیەی کە زۆر لە چین کراوەترن،

it can be even harder to recognize what propaganda looks like.

زۆر قورس دەبێت کە پڕوپاگاندە بناسییەوە.

It hides in plain sight as news reports,

وەک هەواڵی و ڕاپۆرتی میدیایی خۆی مەڵاس دەدات،

TV commercials, political campaigning

بازرگانەکانی TV، کەمپینی سیاسی

and in our social media feeds.

و بڵاوکراوەکانی تۆڕی کۆمەڵاییەتی.

It works to change our minds without our knowledge.

کاردەکات بۆ گۆڕینی مێشکمان نەوەک زانیاریەکانمان.

Every society is vulnerable to accepting propaganda as truth,

هەموو کۆمەڵگەیەک لاوازە کە پڕوپاگاندە وەک ڕاستی پەسەندبکات،

and no society where propaganda replaces the truth

وهیچ کۆمەڵگەیەک نییە کە پڕوپاگەندە جێگەی ڕاستی بگرێتەوە

can be truly free.
