What it was like to grow up under China's one-child policy | Nanfu Wang

My name is Nanfu.

मेरा नाम नानफ़ू है.

In Chinese, "nan" means "man."

चीनी भाषा में, " नान " का अर्थ है " आदमी "

And "fu" means "pillar."

और " फ़ू " का अर्थ है " स्तंभ "

My family had hoped for a boy,

मेरे परिवार को लड़के की उम्मीद थी,

who would grow up to be the pillar of the family.

जो बड़ा होकर परिवार का सहारा बनेगा

And when I turned out to be a girl,

और जब मैं लड़की निकली,

they named me Nanfu anyway.

तो फिर भी उन्होंने मेरा नाम नानफ़ू रखा

I was born in 1985,

मैं 1985 में पैदा हुई थी,

six years before China announced its one-child policy.

चीन की एक-बच्चे की नीति घोषित होने से 6 साल पहले

Right after I was born,

मेरे पैदा होने के ठीक बाद,

the local officials came and ordered my mom to be sterilized.

स्थानीय अधिकारी आए और मेरी माँ का बंध्यकरण करवाने के हुक्म दे गए

My grandpa stood up to the officials,

मेरे दादाजी ने अधिकारियों से मुखालफत की,

because he wanted a grandson to carry on the family name.

क्योंकि वह एक पोता चाहते थे, खानदान का नाम आगे ले जाने के लिए

Eventually, my parents were allowed to have a second child,

but they had to wait for five years

and pay a substantial fine.

Growing up, my brother and I

were surrounded by children from one-child families.

I remember feeling a sense of shame

because I had a younger brother.

I felt like our family did something wrong for having two children.

At the time, I didn't question

where this sense of shame and guilt came from.

A year and a half ago, I had my own first child.

It was the best thing that ever happened in my life.

Becoming a mother

माँ बनने के बाद

gave me a totally new perspective on my own childhood,

मुझे अपने बचपन को देखने का बिल्कुल नया नज़रिया मिला,

and it brought back my memories of early life in China.

और मुझे चीन में गुज़रे अपने बचपन की याद आई

For the past three decades,

पिछले तीन दशकों के लिए,

everyone in my family had to apply for a permission from the government

मेरे सभी घरवालों को अर्ज़ी भरकर सरकार से इजाज़त माँगनी पड़ी है

to have a child.

And I wondered

what it was like for people who lived under the one-child policy.

So I decided to make a documentary about it.

One of the people I interviewed

was the midwife who delivered all of the babies born in my village,

including myself.

She was 84 years old when I interviewed her.

I asked her,

"Do you remember how many babies you delivered throughout your career?"

She didn't have a number for deliveries.

She said she had performed

60,000 forced abortions and sterilizations.

Sometimes, she said,

कभी-कभी, उन्होंने कहा,

a late-term fetus would survive an abortion,

देर से गर्भपात कराने पर भ्रूण बच जाता,

and she would kill the baby after delivering it.

और फिर वह उस बच्चे का जन्म होने पर उसे मार डालती

She remembered how her hands would tremble

as she did the work.

Her story shocked me.

When I set out to make the film,

I expected it would be a simple story of perpetrators and victims.

People who carried out the policy

and people who are living with the consequences.

But that wasn't what I saw.

As I was finishing my interview with the midwife,

I noticed an area in her house

that was decorated with elaborate homemade flags.

And each flag has a picture of a baby on it.

These were flags that were sent by families

ये झंडे उन परिवारों ने भेजे थे

whom she helped treat their infertility problems.

She explained that she had had enough

उन्होंने समझाया कि गर्भपात व बंध्यकरण कराना

of performing abortions and sterilizations --

उनके लिए बहुत हो चुका था --

that the only work she did now was to help families have babies.

कि अब वह केवल परिवारों को बच्चे पैदा करने में मदद करने काम करती थी

She said she was full of guilt

उन्होंने कहा कि वह एक-बच्चे की नीति को

for carrying out the one-child policy,

अमल करने के कारण अपराधबोध से भरी थी,

and she hoped that by helping families have babies,

और उन्हें उम्मीद थी कि बच्चे होने में परिवारों की मदद करके

she could counteract what she did in the past.

वह अपने अतीत के दुष्कर्मों को रद्द कर सकती

It became clear to me she, too, was a victim of the policy.

Every voice was telling her

that what she did was right and necessary for China's survival.

And she did what she thought was right for her country.

I know how strong that message was.

It was everywhere around myself when I grew up.

जब मैं बड़ी हो रही थी तब वह मेरे हर तरफ़ था

It was printed on matches,

माचिस पर,

playing cards,

ताश के पत्तों पर,

textbooks, posters.

पाठ्यपुस्तकों पर और इश्तेहारों पर वह छपा था

The propaganda praising the one-child policy

एक बच्चे की नीति को बढ़ावा देने वाला प्रचार

was everywhere around us.

हमारे आसपास हर जगह था.

[Anyone who refuses to sterilize will be arrested.]

( बंध्यकरण न कराने वालों को गिरफ्तार किया जाएगा )

And so were the threats against disobeying it.

इसकी नाफ़र्मानी के खतरों का प्रचार भी हर तरफ़ था.

The message seeped into our minds

यह पैग़ाम हमारे ज़ेहन में इस कदर बस गया

so much so that I grew up feeling embarrassed

कि मैं अपने छोटे भाई के होने पर शर्मिंदगी

for having a younger brother.

महसूस करते हुए बड़ी हुई हूँ.

With each person I filmed,

हर इंसान का इंटरव्यू लेने पर

I saw how their minds and hearts can be influenced by the propaganda,

मैंने देखा कि इस प्रचार से उनके दिल और दिमाग कैसे प्रभावित हो सकते हैं,

and how their willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good

और कैसे उनकी बेहतरी के लिए कुर्बानी देने की रज़ामंदी को

can be twisted into something very dark and tragic.

एक संजीदा और दर्दनाक चीज़ में मरोड़ा जा सकता है.

China is not the only place where this happens.

चीन वह इकलौती जगह नहीं है जहाँ यह होता

There is no country on earth where propaganda isn't present.

पृथ्वी पर ऐसा कोई देश नहीं है जहाँ प्रचार प्रसार मौजूद नहीं है

And in societies that are supposed to be more open and free than China,

और उन समाजों में, जो चीन से ज़्यादा खुले और आज़ाद माने जाते हैं,

it can be even harder to recognize what propaganda looks like.

It hides in plain sight as news reports,

TV commercials, political campaigning

and in our social media feeds.

It works to change our minds without our knowledge.

Every society is vulnerable to accepting propaganda as truth,

हर समाज की यह कमज़ोरी है कि वह प्रचार को सच्चाई मान सकता है,

and no society where propaganda replaces the truth

और ऐसा समाज, जहाँ प्रचार सच्चाई का स्थान लेता है,

can be truly free.

सही मायने में स्वतंत्र नही हो सकता
