So on my way here,

لەسەر ڕێگام بۆ ئێرە،

the passenger next to me and I had a very interesting conversation

زۆر ئارەزووم لە گفتوگۆبوو لەگەڵ گەشتیارێکی تەنیشتم

during my flight.

لە ماوەی گەشتەکەم.

He told me, "It seems like the United States has run out of jobs,

پێی وتم، پێدەچێت لە ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان ئیش نەما بێت،

because they're just making some up:

لە بەرئەوەی تەنها هەندێک شت هەڵدەبەستن:

cat psychologist, dog whisperer, tornado chaser."

پشیلەی دەرووناسی، چرپەی سەگ، گێژەلوولکەی تۆڕنادۆ."

A couple of seconds later, he asked me,

دوو خولەکی دواتر لێی پرسیم،

"So what do you do?"

"تۆ پیشەت چیە؟"

And I was like, "Peacebuilder?"

و من وەکو "بانگەوازخوازی ئاشتی" بووم؟

Every day, I work to amplify the voices of women

هەموو ڕۆژێک، بۆ پاڵپشتیکردنی دەنگی ئافرەت کار دەکەم،

and to highlight their experiences

بۆ گرینگی دان بە تواناکانیان،

and their participation in peace processes and conflict resolution,

بەژداریکردنیان لە کرداری ئاشتی و بڕیاری دژیەک،

and because of my work,

بەهۆی کارەکەمەوە،

I recognize that the only way to ensure the full participation of women globally

دەزانم تاکە ڕێگە بۆ بەژداری پێ کردنی گشت ئافرەتانی جیهان

is by reclaiming religion.

گێڕانەوەی ئاینە.

Now, this matter is vitally important to me.

ئێستا، ئەو ماددەیە بنچینەیەکی گرینگە بۆم

As a young Muslim woman, I am very proud of my faith.

وەک ئافرەتێکی گەنجی موسڵمان، زۆر شانازی بە دینەکەم دەکەم.

It gives me the strength and conviction to do my work every day.

هەموو ڕۆژێک باوەڕ و هێزم بۆ ئەنجامدانی کارەکەم پێدەبەخشێت.

It's the reason I can be here in front of you.

ئەوە هۆکاری ئامادەبوونمە لە بەرانبەر ئێوە.

But I can't overlook the damage that has been done in the name of religion,

بەڵام ناتوانم سەیری ئەو تێکشکانە بکەم کە بەناوی ئاینەکەم هەڵبەستراوە،

not just my own, but all of the world's major faiths.

نەک تەنها ئاینەکەی من، بەڵکو هەموو جۆرە ئاینەکانی دونیا.

The misrepresentation and misuse and manipulation of religious scripture

بەیاننامەیەکی درۆ و خراپ بەکارهێنانی و کارتێکردنە سەر کتێبە پیرۆزەکانی ئاینەکان

has influenced our social and cultural norms,

کاریگەری لەسەر کۆمەڵایەتی و بنچینەی کلتورەکانمان و،

our laws, our daily lives,

یاساکانمان و ژیانی ڕۆژانەمان هەیە،

to a point where we sometimes don't recognize it.

وەکو خالێک کە ئێمە هەندێک کات نایناسینەوە.

My parents moved from Libya, North Africa, to Canada

دایبابم لە لیبیاوە باکوری ئەفریقا، بۆ کەنەدا ڕۆشتن

in the early 1980s,

لە سەرەتاکانی ١٩٨٠،

and I am the middle child of 11 children.

لە ۱۱ منداڵەکە منداڵی ناوەندم.

Yes, 11.

بەڵێ، ۱۱.

But growing up, I saw my parents,

لە پڕۆسەی گەشەسەندنم، باوانم بینی

both religiously devout and spiritual people,

بڕوادار و ڕووحانی بوون

pray and praise God for their blessings,

نزا و سوپاس گوزاری خودایی گەورە دەبن بۆ بەخشندەیەکانی،

namely me of course, but among others. (Laughter)

هەر خۆی من بێگومان، بەڵام لەنێوان ئەوانیترە. (پێکەنین)

They were kind and funny and patient,

ئەوان میهرەبان و گاڵتەچی و لەسەر خۆ بوون،

limitlessly patient, the kind of patience that having 11 kids forces you to have.

ئارامبوونێکی بێ سنوور، هەبووی ۱۱ منداڵ ئەو ئارامبوونە لەسەر دەچەسپێنێت.

And they were fair.

هەروەها دادپەروەر بوون.

I was never subjected to religion through a cultural lens.

بە هۆی تێڕوانینی کلتووری، بە هیچ جۆرێک ل دین ڕۆنەچووبووم.

I was treated the same,

بە هەمان شێوە مامەڵەم لەگەڵ کرا،

the same was expected of me.

هەمان شتیشم لێ چاوەڕوان دەکرا.

I was never taught that God judged differently based on gender.

هەرگیز بیرم نەدەکردەوە خودا حوکمێکی جیاواز لە نێوان ڕەگەزەکان بدات.

And my parents' understanding of God as a merciful and beneficial friend

و تێگەیشتنی دایک و باوکم بۆ خودا وەکو هاوڕێیەکی میهرەبان و بەسوودە

and provider shaped the way I looked at the world.

و ئەو شێوەیە دەبەخشێت من سەیری جیهانم پێی کردووە.

Now, of course, my upbringing had additional benefits.

ئێستا، بێگومان، سەرباری ئەوە چاودێریکردنم بەسوودبووە.

Being one of 11 children is Diplomacy 101. (Laughter)

یەکێک بیت لەنێوان ئەو ١١ منداڵانە سەرەتای چوونە ناو دیپلۆماسیە۱۰۱. (پێکەنین)

To this day, I am asked where I went to school,

لە ڕۆژێکی وەک ئەمڕۆماندا، دەپرسن لە چ فێرگەیەک بووم،

like, "Did you go to Kennedy School of Government?"

بۆنموونە، "ئایا لە کۆلیژی کیندی هارڤارد خوێندووتە"؟

and I look at them and I'm like, "No,

و سەیری ئەوان دەکەم و دەڵێم "نەخێر"

I went to the Murabit School of International Affairs."

لە قوتابخانەی{مورابیت }بۆ کاروباری نێودەوڵەتی" خوێندوومە.

It's extremely exclusive. You would have to talk to my mom to get in.

ئەوە زۆر تایبەتە. تۆ پێویستە قسە لەگەڵ دایکم بکەیت بۆ وەرگرتنی ئەوە.

Lucky for you, she's here.

بەهیوای بەختێکی باش بۆ تۆ، ئەو لێرەیە.

But being one of 11 children and having 10 siblings

بەڵام یەکێک بیت لە نێوان ١١ منداڵەکان و ١٠ خوشک و برات هەبێت

teaches you a lot about power structures and alliances.

زۆر شتت فێردەکەن دەربارەی هێزی پێكهاتن و گونجاندن.

و سەرنج دان، پێویستە خێرا یا هێواش بێیتە گۆ.

It teaches you focus; you have to talk fast or say less,

because you will always get cut off.

لەبەرئەوەی هەمیشە قسەت پێدەبڕن.

It teaches you the importance of messaging.

گرینگی پەیامت فێردەکات.

You have to ask questions in the right way to get the answers you know you want,

پێویستە پرسیارەکان بەشێوەیەکی ڕاست بکەیت بۆ ئەوەی ئەو وەڵامانەی دەتەوێت وەریبگریت،

and you have to say no in the right way to keep the peace.

و تۆ پێویستە بڵێیت نا لە کاتێکی ڕاست بۆ پاراستنی ئاشتی.

But the most important lesson I learned growing up

بەڵام گرینگترین وانە فێری بووم و گەشەم کرد

was the importance of being at the table.

گرینگی بەژدارکردن بوو.

When my mom's favorite lamp broke, I had to be there when she was trying

کاتێک چرا خۆشەویستەکی دایکم شکا، من پێویست بوو لەوێبم کاتێک ئەو هەوڵیدەدا

to find out how and by who, because I had to defend myself,

بۆ دۆزینەوەی چۆن و ئەنجامدەرەکەی بۆ بەرگریکردن لەخۆم،

because if you're not, then the finger is pointed at you,

لەبەرئەوەی ئەگەر نەتوانی، دواتر ئەوە ئاماژەیە بۆ تۆ،

and before you know it, you will be grounded.

و پێش ئەوەی ئەوە بزانیت، سزا دەدرێیت.

I am not speaking from experience, of course.

من لە بارەی ئەزموونەکانمەوە قسە ناکەم، بێگومان.

When I was 15 in 2005, I completed high school and I moved

کاتێک من ١٥ ساڵ بووم لە ٢٠٠٥، خوێندنی ئامادەیم تەواوکرد و چووم

from Canada -- Saskatoon --

بۆ کەنەدا--ساسکاتۆن--

to Zawiya, my parents' hometown in Libya,

بۆ هاوسەرگیری، ماڵی دایک و باوکم لە لەیبیایە،

a very traditional city.

شارێکی زۆر لاسایانەیە.

Mind you, I had only ever been to Libya before on vacation,

بە بیرت بێت، من تەنها چووبێتم بۆ لیبیا پێشتر لە پشووبووە،

and as a seven-year-old girl, it was magic.

و وەکو کچێکی حەوت ساڵی، ئەوە سحراویە.

It was ice cream and trips to the beach and really excited relatives.

ئایس کرێمێک، گەشتەکان قەراغی دەریا و بەلەمەکان پڕ چێژن بوون.

Turns out it's not the same as a 15-year-old young lady.

بە شێوەیەکی دی، ئەوە بۆ خانمێکی ۱٥ ساڵی جیاوازە.

I very quickly became introduced to the cultural aspect of religion.

من زۆر بەخێرای کلتوری لایەنەکانی ئاینەکەم باس کرد.

The words "haram" -- meaning religiously prohibited --

ووشەی "حەرام" بە مانەی قەدەغەکردنی ئاینیە--

and "aib" -- meaning culturally inappropriate --

و "عەیب"بە مانای کردنی شتێکی کلتوری نەشیاو بێت

were exchanged carelessly,

کە بەبێ گوێ پێدان تێکەڵ بە یەک کراون،

as if they meant the same thing and had the same consequences.

وەک ئەوەی مانای هەمان شت بدەن و هەمان ئەنجامیان هەبێت.

And I found myself in conversation after conversation with classmates

و خۆم لە گفتوگۆی بەردەوام لەگەڵ هاوپۆلەکانم دۆزییەوە.

and colleagues, professors, friends, even relatives,

و هاوپۆلەکانم، مامۆستاکانم، هاوڕێکانم، تەنانەت خزمەکانیشم،

beginning to question my own role and my own aspirations.

دەستیان بەپرسیارکردن دەربارەی ڕۆڵم و ئاواتەکانم کرد.

And even with the foundation my parents had provided for me,

و هەرچەندە بناغەی دایک و باوکم ئەوەی پێ بەخشیم،

I found myself questioning the role of women in my faith.

من ڕۆڵی خۆم وەکو ئافرەت لە ئاینەکەم دۆزیەوە.

So at the Murabit School of International Affairs,

دواتر لە قوتابخانەی مورابیتی بۆ کاروباری نێودەوڵەتی،

we go very heavy on the debate,

زۆر گفتوگۆ قووڵ بووینەوە،

and rule number one is do your research, so that's what I did,

و یاسای ژمارە یەک توێژینەوەکەت بکەیت، هەر ئەمەشم کردووە،

and it surprised me how easy it was

و ئەوە توشی شۆکی کردم کە چەند ئاسان بووە

to find women in my faith who were leaders,

بۆ دۆزینەوەی ئافرەتان لە ئاینەکەم کە سەرکردە بوون،

who were innovative, who were strong --

داهێنەربوون، بەهێزبوون

politically, economically, even militarily.

سیاسەتمەدار، ئابووری، تەنانەت لە ڕووی سەربازیشەوە.

Khadija financed the Islamic movement

خەدیجە خودا لێ ڕازیبێت، جووڵەی دارای ئیسلام بوو

in its infancy.

لە سەرەتاکانی ژیانی.

We wouldn't be here if it weren't for her.

ئێمە لێرە نەدەبووین ئەگەر بۆ ئەو نەبوایە.

So why weren't we learning about her?

کەواتە بۆ ئێمە لە ئەوەوە فێر نەبووین؟

Why weren't we learning about these women?

بۆ دەربارەی ئەو ئافرەتانە فێر نەبووین؟

Why were women being relegated to positions which predated

بۆ ئافرەتان گرینگیەکی کەمیان پێدەدرێت کە لە پێش

the teachings of our faith?

فێربوونەکانی ئاینەکەمانە؟

And why, if we are equal in the eyes of God,

و بۆچی؟ ئەگەر هەمووان لای خودای یەکسان بین،

are we not equal in the eyes of men?

ئایا لە لایەن پیاوەکانەوە یەکسان نین؟

To me, it all came back to the lessons I had learned as a child.

بۆ من، دەگەڕێتەوە بۆ ئەو وانانەی کە بە منداڵی فێریان بووم.

The decision maker, the person who gets to control the message,

بڕیاردەر، کەسێکە کە کۆنتڕۆڵی ئامانجەکە دەکات،

is sitting at the table,

لەسەر مێزەکە دانیشتووە،

and unfortunately, in every single world faith,

و بەداخەوە، لە هەر ئاینێک لەم جیهانە،

they are not women.

ئەوانە ئافرەت نین،

Religious institutions are dominated by men

دامەزراوە ئاینیەکان لە لایەن پیاوەکان کۆنتڕۆڵ کراوە

and driven by male leadership,

و لە لایەن سەرکردەی نێرەوە بەڕێوە بردراوە،

and they create policies in their likeness,

و ئەوان سیاسەتێکی هاوشێوەی خۆیان دروست دەکەن،

and until we can change the system entirely,

و تاوەکو ئێمە دەتوانین سیستەمەکە بە تەواوی بگۆڕین،

then we can't realistically expect to have full economic

لە ڕاستییدا پێشبینی بەژداری کردن ناکەین

and political participation of women.

و سیاسەتی بەژداری کردنی ئافرەتان.

Our foundation is broken.

بنچینەکەمان لە کار کەوتووە.

My mom actually says, you can't build a straight house on a crooked foundation.

لە ڕاستیدا دایکم دەڵێت، ناتوانی خانووێکی باش لەسەر زەوییەکی پوچەڵ درووست بکەیت.

In 2011, the Libyan revolution broke out, and my family was on the front lines.

لە ٢٠١١، شۆڕشی لیبیا هەڵگیرسا،و خێزانەکەم لە هێڵێ ڕووبەڕوو بوونەوە بوون.

And there's this amazing thing that happens in war,

و شتێکی سەرنج ڕاکێش لە جەنگەکە ڕوویدا،

a cultural shift almost, very temporary.

بە نزیکی گۆڕینی کلتورە، زۆر کاتی

And it was the first time that I felt it was not only acceptable

و یەکەم جار بوو کە من هەستم کرد ئەوە جێگای قبوڵ کردن نییە

for me to be involved, but it was encouraged.

بۆ بەژداری کردن، بەڵام هاندەربوو.

It was demanded.

ئەوە داواکراو بوو.

Myself and other women had a seat at the table.

خۆم و ژنەکانی دی لە سەر مێزەکە دانشتبووین.

We weren't holding hands or a medium.

تەنها لە پشتەوە یا هاندەر نەبووین.

We were part of decision making.

ئێمە بەشێکی بڕیاردەر بووین.

We were information sharing. We were crucial.

زانیارییەکانمان ئاڵوگۆڕ دەکرد و پێگەیەکی گرینگمان هەبوو.

And I wanted and needed for that change to be permanent.

دەمویست و پێوستم بوو ئەو گۆڕینە هەمیشەی بێت.

Turns out, that's not that easy.

گۆڕینی ئەوە زۆر ئاسان نیە.

It only took a few weeks before the women that I had previously worked with

تەنها پێویستی بە چەند هەفتەیەک بوو پێش گەڕانەوەی ئەو ئافرەتەکان

were returning back to their previous roles,

بە ڕۆڵی پێشووتر کارم لەگەڵ کرد بوون.

and most of them were driven by words of encouragement

و زۆرینەی دەرکرا بوون بە هۆی

from religious and political leaders,

پێشەوا ئاینی و سیاسیەکانیان،

most of whom cited religious scripture as their defense.

زۆرینەی تێکستە ئاینەکانیان وەکو بەڵگەیەکە.

It's how they gained popular support for their opinions.

ئەوەی ئەوان پشتگیری لێ دەکەن بۆ ئامانجەکەنیان.

So initially, I focused on the economic and political empowerment of women.

کەواتە سەرەتا، من سەرنج دەخەمە سەر ئابووری و سیاسی دەسەڵاتی ئافرەتان.

I thought that would lead to cultural and social change.

پێم وابوو دەتوانن کلتور و جڤاک بگۆڕن.

It turns out, it does a little, but not a lot.

ئەوە دەگۆڕێت، ئەوە کەمێکە، گشتگیر نییە.

I decided to use their defense as my offense,

بڕیارم دا بۆ بەکارهێنانی داکۆکیکردنم لێیان وەکو بێڕیزیەک،

and I began to cite and highlight Islamic scripture as well.

و دەستم کرد بەسەرچاوە و خاڵە بنچینەیەکانی قورئانی پیرۆز.

In 2012 and 2013, my organization led the single largest

لە ٢٠١٢ و ٢٠١٣، ڕێكخراوەکەم ڕابەری گەورەترین

and most widespread campaign in Libya.

و گەورەترین چالاکی لە لیبیا کرد.

We entered homes and schools and universities, even mosques.

چووینە نێو ماڵەکان، فێرگەکان، زانکۆکان و تەنانەت مزگەوتەکانیش.

We spoke to 50,000 people directly,

ڕاستەوخۆ قسەمان بۆ ٥٠،٠٠٠ خەڵک کرد،

and hundreds of thousands more through billboards and television commercials,

و سەدان هەزار و زیاتر لە تابلۆ، ناساندنە تەلەڤزیۆنیەکان

radio commercials and posters.

ڕادیۆ و پۆستەرەکان بینیان.

And you're probably wondering how a women's rights organization

و ڕەنگە زانخوازی چۆن ڕێكخراوێکی مافی ئافرەتان

was able to do this in communities which had previously opposed

دەتوانێت ئەوە بکات لە ناو ئەو کۆمەڵگایە کە لەوەو پێش دژی

our sheer existence.

ئێمە بووە

I used scripture.

کتێبە پیرۆزەکانم بەکارهێنا

I used verses from the Quran and sayings of the Prophet,

ئایەتێکیم لە قورئان و فەرموودەیەکی پێغەمبەرە(د.خ) بەکارهێنا،

Hadiths, his sayings which are, for example,

حەدیسەکان، فەرموودەیەکی وەک ئەوە،

"The best of you is the best to their family."

"باشترینتان ئەوەیە کە بۆ خێزانەکەی باشە".

"Do not let your brother oppress another."

" رێگە مەدە براکەت ئازاری خەڵکی دی بدات".

For the first time, Friday sermons led by local community imams

بۆ یەکەم جار، ڕابەرانی وتاری هەینی لە لایەن پێشنوێژی خوێنێ ناوچەیی

promoted the rights of women.

مافی ئافرەتانیان بەرز نرخاند.

They discussed taboo issues, like domestic violence.

گفتوگۆیان دەربارەی کاری ناڕەوا، وەکو توندوتیژی کۆمەڵایەتی کرد.

Policies were changed.

سیاسی گۆڕدرا.

In certain communities, we actually had to go as far

لە کۆمەڵگەیەکی دیاریکراو، پێویست بوو تا ئەوپەڕی بڕۆین

as saying the International Human Rights Declaration,

وەکو لێدوانێکی رێکخراوی مافی مڕۆڤ جیهانی،

which you opposed because it wasn't written by religious scholars,

دەکرێت دژی بیت، چونکەلە لایەن زانایانی ئاینەوە نەنوسراوە.

well, those same principles are in our book.

باشە، ئەوانە هەمان ڕێسای نێو کتێبەکانمانن.

So really, the United Nations just copied us.

کەواتە، نەتەوە یەکگرتووەکان تەنها لاسایی ئێمەی کرووەتەوە.

By changing the message, we were able to provide

بە گۆڕینی پەیامەکە، توانیمان بیدەین

an alternative narrative which promoted the rights of women in Libya.

چیڕۆکێکی گۆڕدراو کە مافی ئافرەتانی لە لیبیا بەرزکردەوە.

It's something that has now been replicated internationally,

لە ئێستادا شتێکە لە جیهان دا پەیڕەو دەکرێت

and while I am not saying it's easy -- believe me, it's not.

دڵنیاتان دەکەمەوە کارێکی سانا نییە، بڕوا بکەن سانا نییە.

Liberals will say you're using religion and call you a bad conservative.

لیبڕاڵی دەڵێت ئێمە ئاین بەکاردەهێنین و بانگت دەکەم پارێزگارێکی خراپ.

Conservatives will call you a lot of colorful things.

پارێزگارەکان بە شتی جیاواز بانگت دەکەن.

I've heard everything from, "Your parents must be extremely ashamed of you" --

زۆر شتم بیستووە، "دایک و باوکتان شەرمەزار بن".

false; they're my biggest fans --

هەڵەن، ئەوان لە گەورەترین هەوادارەکانن،

to "You will not make it to your next birthday" --

بۆ " تۆ ئەوەت دروست نەکردووە بۆ ڕۆژی لەدایک بوونت--"

again wrong, because I did.

دوبارە هەڵەن، لەبەر ئەوەی من کردم.

And I remain

و مامەوە

a very strong believer that women's rights and religion are not mutually exclusive.

باوەڕ بەخۆبوونێکی بەهێز کە مافی ئافرەتان و ئاین پەیوەست نین بەیەکەوە.

But we have to be at the table.

بەڵام پێویستە گفتوگۆ بکەین.

We have to stop giving up our position, because by remaining silent,

پێویستە وازنەهێنین لە شوێنەکەمان، چونکە کاتێک بێدەنگ دەبین،

we allow for the continued persecution and abuse of women worldwide.

ڕێگە بە بەردەوامی چەوسانەوە و دەست درێژی کردنە سەر ئافرەتانی جیهان دەدەین.

By saying that we're going to fight for women's rights

بە ووتنی شەڕ دەکەین بۆ مافی ئافرەتان

and fight extremism with bombs and warfare,

و شەڕی بەرگری بکەین لەگەڵ بۆمب و شەرکردن،

we completely cripple local societies which need to address these issues

ئێمە بەتەواوی لە کۆمەڵگەی خۆجێی شەلین کە پێویستەی بە چارەسەرە

so that they're sustainable.

بۆ بەردەوام بوون.

It is not easy, challenging distorted religious messaging.

ئاسان نیە، بەرانگبوونەوە لە پەیامێکی ئاینێکی گۆڕاو.

You will have your fair share of insults and ridicule and threats.

ترست لە هاوبەشی ڕسوا کردن و گاڵتە پێ کرد و ترساندن هەیە.

But we have to do it.

بەڵام پێویستە ئەنجامی بدەین.

We have no other option than to reclaim the message of human rights,

ئێمە هەڵبژاردنی ترمان نیە لە گێڕانەوەی پەیامی مافی مرۆڤ،

the principles of our faith,

ڕێساکانی ئاینمان،

not for us, not for the women in your families,

بە تەنها بۆ ئێمە و ئافرەتانی خێزانەکەت و

not for the women in this room,

ئەو ئافرەتانەی ئەو ژوورە نییە

not even for the women out there,

تەنانەت بۆ ئەو ئافرەتانەی لە دەرەوەی ئێرەن نییە.

but for societies that would be transformed

بەڵکو بۆ ئەو جڤاکەی کە بە

with the participation of women.

بەژداری ئافرەت دەگۆڕێت.

And the only way we can do that,

و تاکە ڕێگایە ئێمە بتوانین ئەنجامی بدەین،

our only option,

تاکە هەڵبژاردەیە،

is to be, and remain, at the table.

هەین و بەشداری دەکەین.
