So on my way here,

the passenger next to me and I had a very interesting conversation

during my flight.

He told me, "It seems like the United States has run out of jobs,

because they're just making some up:

cat psychologist, dog whisperer, tornado chaser."

A couple of seconds later, he asked me,

"So what do you do?"

「それで 君の職業は？」

And I was like, "Peacebuilder?"

「平和構築家みたいなものかしら？」 私は答えました

(Laughter)

Every day, I work to amplify the voices of women

毎日 私は女性の声を広め

and to highlight their experiences

和平プロセスと紛争解決での

and their participation in peace processes and conflict resolution,

彼女たちの実体験に光を当てる為に 尽力しています

and because of my work,

I recognize that the only way to ensure the full participation of women globally

女性の社会参加を世界的に 確かなものにする 唯一の方法は

is by reclaiming religion.

Now, this matter is vitally important to me.

これは 私にとって 極めて重大な問題です

私は若い女性イスラム教徒として 自分の信仰に誇りを持っています

As a young Muslim woman, I am very proud of my faith.

It gives me the strength and conviction to do my work every day.

それは日々 活動する力と信念を与えてくれます

It's the reason I can be here in front of you.

そのお陰で私はここ― あなた方の前に居られるのです

But I can't overlook the damage that has been done in the name of religion,

しかし私は宗教という名の下に 被った被害を見過ごす事は出来ません

not just my own, but all of the world's major faiths.

自分自身の宗教だけではなく 世界の主要な宗教に於いてもです

The misrepresentation and misuse and manipulation of religious scripture

経典の誤った説明、誤った使用、 改ざんなどによって

has influenced our social and cultural norms,

私たちの社会や文化規範

our laws, our daily lives,

法制度や日常生活は

to a point where we sometimes don't recognize it.

気づかない所まで 影響を受けています

My parents moved from Libya, North Africa, to Canada

私の両親は北アフリカのリビアから カナダに移住しました

in the early 1980s,

1980年代の初め頃です

and I am the middle child of 11 children.

私は11人兄弟の真ん中です

Yes, 11.

そう 11人です

But growing up, I saw my parents,

しかし成長する中で 私は自分の両親が２人共

both religiously devout and spiritual people,

宗教的に熱心で敬虔な信者たちであり

pray and praise God for their blessings,

神から与えられた恵み―勿論つまり 私の事ですが

namely me of course, but among others. (Laughter)

他の子どもたちも― を祈り称えているのを目にしました（笑）

They were kind and funny and patient,

２人は優しく愉快で忍耐強く

limitlessly patient, the kind of patience that having 11 kids forces you to have.

無限の忍耐―11人の子どもが居たら 持たざるを得ない忍耐が備わっていました

And they were fair.

又 公正な人たちでした

I was never subjected to religion through a cultural lens.

私は文化的な眼を通して 宗教に服従させられることはなく

I was treated the same,

平等に扱われました

the same was expected of me.

同様にそれは私にも求められました

I was never taught that God judged differently based on gender.

神が性別によって 区別をすると 教えられたことは一度もありませんでした

And my parents' understanding of God as a merciful and beneficial friend

神を慈悲深く有益な友人・支援者と 理解していた両親によって

and provider shaped the way I looked at the world.

私の世界観は形成されました

Now, of course, my upbringing had additional benefits.

さて勿論私の育った環境には それ以上の恩恵がありました

Being one of 11 children is Diplomacy 101. (Laughter)

11人兄弟の１人である事は Diplomacy101だということです（笑）

To this day, I am asked where I went to school,

今でも 私はどの学校を 出たのかをこう聞かれます

like, "Did you go to Kennedy School of Government?"

「ケネディ行政大学院を出たの？」

and I look at them and I'm like, "No,

すると彼らを見てこう言います　 「いいえ

I went to the Murabit School of International Affairs."

『ムラビット国際関係学校』を出ました」

It's extremely exclusive. You would have to talk to my mom to get in.

そこは極端に排他的です 入学したければうちの母の許可が必要でしょう

Lucky for you, she's here.

運良く 母はここに来ていますよ

But being one of 11 children and having 10 siblings

しかし11人の子どもの１人で 10人の兄弟がいると

teaches you a lot about power structures and alliances.

権力構造と協調について 大いに学べるのです

It teaches you focus; you have to talk fast or say less,

集中力も身につきます― 早口で口数も少なくなります

because you will always get cut off.

だっていつも遮られてしまいますから

It teaches you the importance of messaging.

メッセージを送る事の大切さも学びます

You have to ask questions in the right way to get the answers you know you want,

答が知りたければ きちんと質問をしなければなりません

and you have to say no in the right way to keep the peace.

平和を保つ為には はっきりと ノーと言わなければなりません

But the most important lesson I learned growing up

しかし 成長する中で学んだ 最も重要な教訓は

was the importance of being at the table.

「テーブルにつく」という事です

When my mom's favorite lamp broke, I had to be there when she was trying

母のお気に入りのランプが壊れ 誰がどうやって壊したのか調べていた時

to find out how and by who, because I had to defend myself,

私は自己防衛の為 そこにいなければなりませんでした

because if you're not, then the finger is pointed at you,

もしいないなら その時は疑いの目がその人に向き

and before you know it, you will be grounded.

知らぬ間に 皆に取り囲まれてしまうのです

I am not speaking from experience, of course.

勿論 自分の経験から そう言っている訳ではありませんよ

When I was 15 in 2005, I completed high school and I moved

2005年 私は15歳で高校を卒業し

from Canada -- Saskatoon --

カナダのサスカトゥーンから

to Zawiya, my parents' hometown in Libya,

両親の故郷であるリビアの ザウィヤに引越しました

a very traditional city.

とても伝統的な都市です

Mind you, I had only ever been to Libya before on vacation,

言っておきますがリビアには それまでに休暇でしか行った事はなく

and as a seven-year-old girl, it was magic.

７歳の少女だった私にとって それは魔法でした

It was ice cream and trips to the beach and really excited relatives.

アイスクリームを食べながらビーチまで行き 親戚と大いに盛り上がりました

Turns out it's not the same as a 15-year-old young lady.

15歳の若い女性にとって今回は それとは同じものでないと分かりました

I very quickly became introduced to the cultural aspect of religion.

私はすぐさま 文化的な 宗教の側面を知る事になりました

The words "haram" -- meaning religiously prohibited --

「ハラム」という言葉は 「宗教上禁止された」を意味し

and "aib" -- meaning culturally inappropriate --

「アイブ」は 「文化的に相応しくない」という意味で

were exchanged carelessly,

それらの言葉は軽率に取り交わされます

as if they meant the same thing and had the same consequences.

まるでその二つの言葉が同じ意味で 同じ重要性を持つかのようでした

And I found myself in conversation after conversation with classmates

気がつくと クラスメート 同僚 教授 友人そして親戚とさえ

and colleagues, professors, friends, even relatives,

次々に会話を交わす中で 私は自らの役割や

beginning to question my own role and my own aspirations.

自らの野望に 疑問を持ち始めていました

And even with the foundation my parents had provided for me,

両親が私に与えてくれた基盤すら揺らぎ

I found myself questioning the role of women in my faith.

信仰に於ける女性の役割に 疑問を持つ自分に気づきました

So at the Murabit School of International Affairs,

「ムラビット国際関係学校」では

we go very heavy on the debate,

議論を非常に重視します

and rule number one is do your research, so that's what I did,

そこでの最優先のルールはリサーチを する事なので 私はそれをやりました

and it surprised me how easy it was

私の信仰上のリーダーであり

to find women in my faith who were leaders,

刷新的で 政治的経済的軍事的にも

who were innovative, who were strong --

力強い女性を あまりにも容易に

politically, economically, even militarily.

見つけ出せたのには驚きました

Khadija financed the Islamic movement

ハディジャはイスラムの運動の初期に

in its infancy.

資金を融通していました

We wouldn't be here if it weren't for her.

彼女がいなければ 私たちはここにはいません

So why weren't we learning about her?

では何故彼女について 学ぼうとしなかったのでしょう？

Why weren't we learning about these women?

何故そんな女性たちについて 学ぼうとしなかったのでしょう？

Why were women being relegated to positions which predated

何故女性たちは私たちの 信仰の教えを先導する地位から

the teachings of our faith?

追い払われていたのでしょうか？

And why, if we are equal in the eyes of God,

もし私たちが神の目に 平等であるならば

are we not equal in the eyes of men?

何故人間の目には 平等でないのでしょうか？

To me, it all came back to the lessons I had learned as a child.

私には 子どもの頃学んだ教訓が 蘇って来ます

The decision maker, the person who gets to control the message,

決定を下す人 メッセージを 管理するようになる人は

is sitting at the table,

テーブルについているのです

and unfortunately, in every single world faith,

そして不運にも 全てのあらゆる 世界中の宗教に於いて

they are not women.

そういった人たちは女性ではないのです

Religious institutions are dominated by men

宗教組織は男性によって支配され

and driven by male leadership,

男性のリーダーによって運営されていて

and they create policies in their likeness,

私たちがそのシステムを すっかりと変えるまで

and until we can change the system entirely,

彼らは似通った方針を作りだすのです

then we can't realistically expect to have full economic

女性の全面的な経済や社会への参画は

and political participation of women.

現実的には期待できないのです

Our foundation is broken.

私たちの宗教的基盤は崩壊しています

My mom actually says, you can't build a straight house on a crooked foundation.

母は「湾曲した基礎の上に まっすぐな家は建てられない」と言っています

In 2011, the Libyan revolution broke out, and my family was on the front lines.

2011年リビア革命が勃発し 私の家族はその前線にいました

And there's this amazing thing that happens in war,

その戦争の最中に 素晴らしいことが起こりました

a cultural shift almost, very temporary.

ほんの一時的でしたが 文化的な変革に近いものでした

And it was the first time that I felt it was not only acceptable

自分が携わっている事が 受け入れられると感じただけでなく

for me to be involved, but it was encouraged.

勇気づけられたのは初めての事でした

It was demanded.

それが必要とされていたのです

Myself and other women had a seat at the table.

私自身と他の女性たちは テーブルにつく事が出来たのです

We weren't holding hands or a medium.

私たちは差し伸べられた手を握るだけでもなく 仲介役でもなく

We were part of decision making.

意思決定に参加し

We were information sharing. We were crucial.

情報を共有し合う かけがいのない存在でした

And I wanted and needed for that change to be permanent.

私はこの変化が永遠に続く事を望み そうあるべきと思っていました

Turns out, that's not that easy.

それは さほど容易なものではないと 分かりました

It only took a few weeks before the women that I had previously worked with

その時一緒に活動していた女性たちが 元の役割に戻ってしまうのに

were returning back to their previous roles,

わずか数週間しかかかりませんでした

and most of them were driven by words of encouragement

女性たちの殆どは宗教や 政治指導者の

from religious and political leaders,

勧奨の言葉に追い立てられたのです

most of whom cited religious scripture as their defense.

彼らの殆どは宗教の経典を引用することで 予防線を張りました

It's how they gained popular support for their opinions.

そうやって彼らは自分たちの意見への 多くの支持を取り付けたのです

So initially, I focused on the economic and political empowerment of women.

最初 私は経済的、政治的な 女性の権限の強化に集中しました

I thought that would lead to cultural and social change.

それが文化的、社会的な変革に 繋がると思ったのです

It turns out, it does a little, but not a lot.

実際に大いにではありませんが 少しは繋がるのです

I decided to use their defense as my offense,

私は攻撃として 彼らの防衛を 利用することにしました

and I began to cite and highlight Islamic scripture as well.

イスラムの経典を 彼らと同様に 引用し 強調し始めました

In 2012 and 2013, my organization led the single largest

2012年と2013年に 私の組織はリビアで最大規模で

and most widespread campaign in Libya.

最も広範囲に拡大した運動を指揮しました

We entered homes and schools and universities, even mosques.

私たちは家庭、学校、大学そして モスクにすら入りました

We spoke to 50,000 people directly,

５万人の人々に直接話し

and hundreds of thousands more through billboards and television commercials,

radio commercials and posters.

And you're probably wondering how a women's rights organization

元々私たちの存在そのものに 反対していたコミュニティで

was able to do this in communities which had previously opposed

our sheer existence.

可能にしたのだろうかと思うでしょう

I used scripture.

経典を用いたのです

I used verses from the Quran and sayings of the Prophet,

コーランの一節や 予言者の格言を使いました

Hadiths, his sayings which are, for example,

例えばこんなハディースの格言です

"The best of you is the best to their family."

「汝の最良は その家族にとっての最良である」

"Do not let your brother oppress another."

「汝の兄弟に他者を虐げさせてはならない」

For the first time, Friday sermons led by local community imams

地域コミュニティのイマーム（導師） が執り行う金曜礼拝では

promoted the rights of women.

初めて女性の権利が 推進されるようになりました

They discussed taboo issues, like domestic violence.

DVといったタブーな事柄についても 議論を交わしました

Policies were changed.

方針が変わりました

In certain communities, we actually had to go as far

あるコミュニティでは

as saying the International Human Rights Declaration,

宗教学者によって書かれていないため 反対されていた世界人権宣言について

which you opposed because it wasn't written by religious scholars,

well, those same principles are in our book.

宣言と同じ原理が私たちの経典の中に あることまで示しました

So really, the United Nations just copied us.

事実 国連は私たちの教義を 真似ているだけなのです

By changing the message, we were able to provide

メッセージを変えることによって 私たちは

an alternative narrative which promoted the rights of women in Libya.

リビアの女性たちの権利を推し進める 新たな話が出来るのです

It's something that has now been replicated internationally,

この動きは現在 他の国にも広がっています

and while I am not saying it's easy -- believe me, it's not.

本当に 容易なことではありません

Liberals will say you're using religion and call you a bad conservative.

リベラル派は私たちを宗教を使った 最低な保守派呼ばわりするでしょう

Conservatives will call you a lot of colorful things.

保守派の人間も 色々な事を言ってくるでしょう

I've heard everything from, "Your parents must be extremely ashamed of you" --

様々な声を耳にしてきました 「親はあなたを心底恥じているに決まっている」

false; they're my biggest fans --

違います ２人は私の一番のファンです

to "You will not make it to your next birthday" --

「次の誕生日は迎えられないだろう」

again wrong, because I did.

これも間違いです　 ちゃんと迎えられましたから

And I remain

そして未だ私は

a very strong believer that women's rights and religion are not mutually exclusive.

女性の権利と宗教は互いに 相容れないものではないと堅く信じていますが

But we have to be at the table.

私たちは テーブルにつく 必要があるのです

We have to stop giving up our position, because by remaining silent,

沈黙を続ける事によって 世界中の女性の 執拗な迫害や虐待を許しているのだから

we allow for the continued persecution and abuse of women worldwide.

私たちは自分たちの地位を 諦めてはならないのです

By saying that we're going to fight for women's rights

私たちは女性の権利の為に戦うと宣言し

and fight extremism with bombs and warfare,

過激主義と 爆弾や 武力衝突で戦う事によって

we completely cripple local societies which need to address these issues

地元の社会活動を完全に鈍らせてしまいます 私たちはそれが持ちこたえられるよう

so that they're sustainable.

問題に取り組む必要があるのです

It is not easy, challenging distorted religious messaging.

歪められた宗教のメッセージに挑んで いくのは容易ではありません

You will have your fair share of insults and ridicule and threats.

皆が同様に 侮辱、嘲り、脅迫を 受ける事になるでしょうが

But we have to do it.

それをする必要があるのです

We have no other option than to reclaim the message of human rights,

人権や私たちの宗教の教義の メッセージを取り戻すより

the principles of our faith,

他に選択肢はないのです

not for us, not for the women in your families,

私たちの為 家族の中の女性の為ではなく

not for the women in this room,

この部屋にいる女性たちの為ではなく

not even for the women out there,

他の女性たちの為ですらなく

but for societies that would be transformed

女性が参加する事で 変わるであろう社会の為に

with the participation of women.

女性が参加する事で 変わるであろう社会の為に

And the only way we can do that,

私たちに出来る唯一の方法なのです

our only option,

私たちの唯一の選択は

is to be, and remain, at the table.

テーブルにつき そこに留まる事なのです
