Billy Collins: Two poems about what dogs think (probably)

I don't know if you've noticed,

نازانم گەر زانیبێتان،

but there's been a spate of books

بەڵام ژمارەیەکی زۆرپەڕتووک هەن

that have come out lately

کە بەم دوایانە هاتونەتە ڕوو

contemplating or speculating

پێشبینی وهەڵهێنان دەکەن

on the cognition and emotional life of dogs.

لەسەر تێگەیشتن وژیانی سۆزداری سەگەکان.

Do they think, do they feel and, if so, how?

ئایا ئەوان بیردەکەنەوە، ئەوان هەست دەکەن، گەر وایە ،چۆن؟

So this afternoon, in my limited time,

بۆیە ئەم ئێوارەیە، لەکاتێکی سنورداردا،

I wanted to take the guesswork out of a lot of that

من ویستم زۆرێک لەمانە مەزندەبکەم

by introducing you to two dogs,

لەڕێگەی ناساندنی ئێوە بە دوو سەگ،

both of whom have taken the command "speak"

هەردوکیان کە فرمانی قسەکردنیان وەرگرتوە

quite literally.

وەک خۆی بەتەواوی.

The first dog is the first to go,

یەکەم سەگ یەکەمە دەستپێدەکا،

and he is contemplating an aspect

بەوردی سەیری لایەنێکی

of his relationship to his owner,

پەیوەندیەکەی دەکات لەگەڵ خاوەنەکەی،

and the title is "A Dog on His Master."

سەگ لەسەر خاوەنەکەی "سەردێڕەکەیەتی".

"As young as I look,

هەرچەندە گەنج دیارم"

I am growing older faster than he.

من زووتر بەتەمەن دادەچم لە ئەو.

Seven to one is the ratio, they tend to say.

بە ڕێژەی حەوت بۆ یەک،وەک ئەوان دەیڵێن.

Whatever the number, I will pass him one day

هەرچی ژمارەیەک بێت،ڕۆژێک پێشی دەکەومەوە

and take the lead,

و ڕابەرایەتیەکە دەگرمەدەست،

the way I do on our walks in the woods,

هەمان شێوەی لەکاتی ڕۆشتنمان بە دارستان دەیکەم،

and if this ever manages to cross his mind,

و ئەگەر ئەمە بە مێشکیدا تێپەڕی

it would be the sweetest shadow

ئەوە دەبێتە دڵگیرترین سێبەر

I have ever cast on snow or grass."

کە هەمبووبێت لەسەر بەفر وگیادا."

And our next dog

و سەگی دواترمان

speaks in something called the revenant,

بەشێوەی گیانێکی گەڕاوەی مردوو قسەدەکات،

which means a spirit that comes back

واتە گیانێک کەگەڕاوەتەوە

to visit you.

بۆ سەردانی تۆ.

"I am the dog you put to sleep,

من ئەو سەگەبووم تۆ خەواندووتە،

as you like to call the needle of oblivion,

وەک تۆ حەزدەکەیت بەدەرزی بێ ئاگای ناوی ببەیت،

come back to tell you this simple thing:

هاتوومەوە بۆ ئەوەی شتێکی سادەت پێ بڵێم:

I never liked you."

من هەرگیز تۆم بەدڵ نەبووە.

(Laughter)

"When I licked your face,

کاتێک دەموچاوتم دەلێسیەوە،

I thought of biting off your nose.

بیرم لەگازگرتن لەلوتت دەکردەوە.

When I watched you toweling yourself dry,

کاتێک سەیرم دەکردیت خۆت وشک دەکردەوە بە خاولی

I wanted to leap and unman you with a snap.

دەمویست کەپەلامارت بدەم وبە قەپێک لەپیاوەتیت بخەم.

I resented the way you moved,

من بێزاربووم لەو شێوەی تۆ دەجوڵایەوە،

your lack of animal grace,

نەبوونی نەرم ونیانی ئاژەڵ ئاسا،

the way you would sit in a chair to eat,

ئەو شێوەیەی کە دادەنیشتیت لەسەر کورسی بۆ خواردن،

a napkin on your lap, a knife in your hand.

دەسڕێک لەسەر کۆشت ،چەقویەک بەدەستەوە.

I would have run away

من هەڵدەهاتم

but I was too weak,

بەڵام من لاواز بووم

a trick you taught me

ئەو فێڵەی تۆ فێرت کردم

while I was learning to sit and heel

کاتێک من فێری دانیشتن ولاربوونەوە دەبووم

and, greatest of insults,

و،گەورەترین ڕسوایەکان،

shake hands without a hand.

دەست ڕاوەشاندن بێ هەبوونی دەست.

I admit the sight of the leash would excite me,

دان بەوە دەنێم کە دیتنی لغاوە دەیوروژاندم،

but only because it meant I was about to smell things

بەڵام تەنها لەبەر ئەوەی خەریک بوو بۆنی شتم دەکرد

you had never touched.

کە تۆ هەرگیز دەستت لێنەدابوو.

You do not want to believe this,

تۆ ناتەوێت باوەڕ بەوە بکەت،

but I have no reason to lie:

بەڵام من هیچ هۆکارێکم نیە بۆ درۆکردن:

I hated the car, hated the rubber toys,

ڕقم لەئۆتۆمبێلەکە بوو، ڕقم لەیاریە لاستیکیەکان بوو،

disliked your friends, and worse, your relatives.

حەزم بە هاوڕێکانت نەدەکرد،ولەوەش خراپتر خزمەکانت.

The jingling of my tags drove me mad.

زرنگانەوەی کارتەکەم شێتی کردبووم.

You always scratched me in the wrong place."

تۆ هەمیشە شوێنی هەڵەی منت دەخوراند."

"All I ever wanted from you was food and water

هەموو ئەوەی لەتۆم دەویست خۆراک و ئاو بوو

in my bowls.

لەناو دەفرەکەم.

While you slept, I watched you breathe

کاتێک خەوتبوویت،سەیری هەناسەدانی تۆم دەکرد

as the moon rose in the sky.

وەک بەرزبوونەوەی مانگ لەئاسمان.

It took all of my strength

هەموو توانامی دەویست

not to raise my head and howl.

بۆ ئەوەی سەربرند نەکەم و نەلورێنم.

Now, I am free of the collar,

من ئێستا ئازادم لەو ملوانکە،

free of the yellow raincoat,

ئازادم لەبارانپۆشە زەردەکە،

monogrammed sweater,

لەبلوزە مۆنۆگرامەکەت،

the absurdity of your lawn,

لەنابەجێی چیمەنەکەت،

and that is all you need to know about this place,

و ئەوە هەموویەتی کە پێویستە بزانی لەسەر ئەم شوێنە،

except what you already supposed

جگە لەوەی کەخۆت بەرلەوە واتزانیبوو

and are glad it did not happen sooner,

و ئاسودەن کەزووتر ڕوینەداوە،

that everyone here can read and write,

هەمووکەس لێرە دەتوانێت بخوێنێت و بنوسێت،

the dogs in poetry,

سەگەکان لەهۆنراوەدا،

the cats and all the others

و پشیلەو ئەوانی تر

in prose."
