My name is Uldus.

ناوم ئلدوسە.

I am a photo-based artist from Russia.

من هونەرمەندی وێنەکێشانم لە ڕوسیا.

I started my way around six years ago

with ironic self-portraits

to lay open so many stereotypes

about nationalities, genders,

and social issues —

["I am Russian. I sell drugs, guns, porno with kids!"] ["Vodka = water. I love vodka!"] (Laughter) —

using photography as my tool to send a message. ["Marry me, I need a visa."]

Today, I am still performing in front of the camera

and trying to be brave like Wonder Woman.

I focus on balancing meaningful message,

Today, I'm going to tell you about my project,

which is named Desperate Romantics.

They're my artifacts, or paintings

I took the painting

This boy is a professional dancer,

ئەو کوڕە سەماکەرێکی شارەزایە.

only 12 years old,

but at secondary school, he hides his dancing classes

بەڵام، لە قوتابخانەی ناوەندیە ،ئەو وانەی سەماکانی دەشارێتەوە

and is wearing the mask of brutality,

ماسکی دڵڕەقی پۆشیوە.

trying to be united with the rest of his classmates

هەوڵ دەدات یەکگرتوبیت لەگەڵ هاوپۆلەکانی

like a storm trooper has no personality.

وەکو سەربازی ئەسپسوار هیچ کەسایەتیەکی نییە.

But this boy has goals and dreams

بەڵام ئەو کوڕە ئامانج و خەونی هەیە

but hides it to be socially accepted,

بەڵام شاردویەتیەوە تاوەکو کۆمەڵ قبوڵی بکات،

because being different isn't easy,

چونەکە جیاواز بوون ئاسان نییە.

especially in Russia.

بەتایبەت لە روسیا.

Next portrait interpretation is metaphoric.

وێنە لێکدانەوەی دواتر خوازراوە.

And this is Nikita,

و ئەوە نیکیتایە.

a security guard from one of the bars

in St. Petersburg.

He likes to say, "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry,"

He hides his sensitivities and romantic side,

and look like an aggressive hulk.

Sometimes, in my project,

هەندێک کات، لە پڕۆژەکەمدا.

I would take the painting

تابلۆکان دەهێنم

and give it new meaning

مانای تازەی پێ دەدەم

and new temptation about it.

سەرن ڕاکێشتری دەکەم.

Sometimes, I would compare facial features

هەندێک کات، لەگەڵ وێنەی تر بەراوردی دەکەم

and playing with words:

یاری بە وشەکان دەکەم:

irony, Iron Man, ironing man.

گاڵتە ئامێز، پیاوی ئاسن ،پیاوی ئاسنین.

Through the artifacts,

لە ناو کاری وێنەکێشان،

I bring social issues

هەندێک کاری کۆمەڵایەتیم هێناوە

which surround me in Russia into the conversation.

کە چواردەوری منیان گرتوە لە ڕوسیا بۆ بەر باس.

Interesting fact about marriage in Russia,

هۆکارێکی باشە بۆ هاوسەرگیری لە ڕوسیا،

that most of the 18, 19-year-old girls

کە زۆربەی کچە ١٨ بۆ ١٩ ساڵەکان

are already ready, and dream to get married.

ئامادەن ، و خەو خەون بە هاوسەرگیری دەبینن.

We're taught from childhood,

لە منداڵیەوە فێر کراوین

successful marriage means successful life,

هاوسەرگیری سەرکەوتوو و واتە ژیانی سەرکەوتوو،

so most of the girls kind of fight

زۆربەی کچەکان شەڕ دەکەن

to get a good husband.

بۆ بەدەست هێنانی هاوسەرێکی باش.

And what about me?

ئەی چی دەربارەی من؟

I'm 27 years old.

من٢٧ ساڵم.

For Russian society, I'm an old maid

لە کۆمەڵگەی ڕوسیا، من بەتەمنترین کچی شوو نەکردووم

and hopeless to ever get married.

و بێهیوام بۆ ئەوەی هاوسەرگیری بکەم.

That's why you see me in a Mexican fighter mask,

لەبەر ئەوەیە تۆ من دەبینی لە شەڕکەری ماسکی مەکسیکی،

in the wedding dress, all desperate in my garden.

لە جلوبەرگی هاوسەرگیریدا، هەموو بێهیواکان لە باخچەکەمدان.

But remember, irony is the key,

and this is actually to motivate girls

to fight for goals, for dreams,

and change stereotypes.

Be brave. Be ironic — it helps.

Be funny and create some magic.
