Laughter is contagious. Passion is contagious.

Inspiration is contagious.

We've heard some remarkable stories from some remarkable speakers.

But for me, what was contagious about all of them

was that they were infected by something I call the

So, the question is, why only them?

Is it luck? Is it chance?

Can we all not systematically and consciously

get infected?

بەمەوە ئالودە ببین ؟

So, in the next eight minutes I would like to share with you my story.

I got infected when I was 17,

با باس لەو شتانە بکەم کە لەتەمەنی ١٧ ساڵێمدا توشی هاتم

when, as a student of the design college,

I encountered adults who actually believed in my ideas,

challenged me and had lots of cups of chai with me.

And I was struck by just how wonderful it felt,

and how contagious that feeling was.

I also realized I should have got infected when I was seven.

So, when I started Riverside school 10 years ago it became a lab,

a lab to prototype and refine a design process

that could consciously infect the mind with the "I Can" bug.

And I uncovered

that if learning is embedded in real-world context,

that if you blur the boundaries between school and life,

یاخود ئەگەر ئەگەر سنوری نێوان قوتابخانەو ژیان تێکبدرێت

then children go through a journey of "aware,"

where they can see the change,

"enable," be changed,

دەتوانن بگۆڕدرێن

and then "empower," lead the change.

پاشان دەبنە خاوەن دەسەڵات و ڕێبەری گۆڕانکارییەکان دەکەن

And that directly increased student wellbeing.

ئەمەش ڕاستەوخۆ دەبێت هۆی زیادکردنی کامەرانی منداڵان

Children became more competent,

منداڵان زیاتر بەتوانا دەبن

and less helpless.

وە کەمتر بی سود

But this was all common sense.

بەڵام ئەمانە هەمووی هەستێکی گشتی بوو

So, I'd like to show you a little glimpse of what

کەواتە، دەمەوێت تۆزێک سەرنجتان ڕاکێشم بەلای

common practice looks like at Riverside.

چۆنیەتی کارکردن لە (ڕیڤەرساید)

A little background: when my grade five was learning about child rights,

ڕابردویەکی سادە: کاتێک قوتابیەکانی پۆلی پێنج فێری مافەکانی منداڵ دەبن

they were made to roll incense sticks,

ناچار دەکران داری بخورد بپێچنەوە

agarbattis, for eight hours

بۆ ماوەی هەشت کاتژمێر

to experience what it means to be a child laborer.

بۆ ئەوەی بزانن مانای منداڵی کرێکار چییە

It transformed them. What you will see is their journey,

ئەوە دەیان گۆڕێت، ئەوەی دەیبینن ئەوە گەشتەکەیانە

and then their utter conviction

پاشان باوەڕهێنانی تەواوەتی

that they could go out and change the world.

بەوەی کە دەتوانن بڕۆن و جیهان بگۆڕن

That's them rolling.

ئەوە ئەوانن کاردەکەن

And in two hours, after their backs were broke,

دوو کاتژمێر دوای ئەوەی پشتیان شکا

they were changed.

ئەوان گۆڕان

And once that happened,

کاتێک ئەمەش ڕویدا

they were out in the city convincing everybody

ئەوان دەچنە دەرەوەی شار و باوەر بە هەموو خەڵکی دەهێنن

that child labor just had to be abolished.

کە دەبێت ڕێگری لە کارکردنی منداڵان بگیرێت

And look at Ragav, that moment when his face changes

سەیری (ڕاگاڤ) بکەن، لەو ساتەی کە دەم وچاوی دەگۆڕێت

because he's been able to understand that he

لەبەر ئەوەی لەوە تێگەیشتووە کە

has shifted that man's mindset.

توانیویەتی بیرکردنەوەی ئەو پیاوە بگۆڕێت

And that can't happen in a classroom.

ئەمەش لەناو پۆلدا ڕونادات

So, when Ragav experienced that

کەواتە، کاتێک (ڕاگاڤ) ئەوەی تاقیکردەوە

he went from "teacher told me,"

ئەو لەوەی کە بڵێت ''مامۆستا پێی وتم'' ەوە

to "I am doing it." And that's the "I Can" mindshift.

گۆڕدرا بۆ ''من دەیکەم'' و ''من دەتوانم بیرکردنەوەی خەڵکی بگۆڕم''

And it is a process that can be energized and nurtured.

ئەم کردارەش دەتوانرێت پەرەی پێبدرێت و ڕاهێنانی لەسەر بکرێت

But we had parents who said,

بەڵام ئێمە باوانمان هەبوو کە دەیانگووت

"Okay, making our children good human beings is all very well,

باشە، منداڵەکانمان بکەن بە مرۆڤێکی باش کە لە زۆر باشەکان بێت

but what about math and science and English?

بەڵام چی دەربارەی بیرکاری و زانست و زمانی ئینگلیزی؟

Show us the grades."

پلەکانیانمان نیشان بدەن

And we did. The data was conclusive.

ئێمەش کردمان، زانیاریەکان باوەرپێکراوبون

When children are empowered,

کاتێ منداڵ دەسەڵاتی پێدەدرێت

not only do they do good,

بە تەنها کاری باش ناکەن

they do well, in fact very well,

بەڵکو زۆر باش دەبن، لە راستیدا زۆر زۆر باش دەبن

as you can see in this national benchmarking assessment

کەواتە وەک دەبینن، لە بەشێکی زۆری ناوچەکانی ئەم وڵاتەدا

taken by over 2,000 schools in India,

زیاتر لە ٢٠٠٠ قوتابخانە لە هندستان دەکرێتەوە

Riverside children were outperforming the top 10 schools in India

منداڵانی (ڕێڤەرساید) بەسەر ١٠ باشترین قوتابخانەکانی هندستاندا سەرکەوتن

in math, English and science.

لە بوارەکانی بیرکاری و زانست و زمانی ئینگلیزی دا

So, it worked. It was now time to take it outside Riverside.

کەواتە ئێستا کاتی ئەوە هاتووە ئەم سەرکەوتنە بەرینە دەرەوەی هندستان

So, on August 15th, Independence Day, 2007,

لە ١٥ی ئابی ٢٠٠٧ ، ڕۆژی ئازادی

the children of Riverside set out to infect Ahmedabad.

منداڵانی ڕیڤەرساید بەرەو ئەحمەد ئاباد بەڕێکەوتن تاکو کاریگەریان لەسەر درووست بکەن

Now it was not about Riverside school.

ئەمە دەربارەی قوتابخانەی ڕیڤەرساید نیە

It was about all children. So, we were shameless.

دەربارەی هەموو منداڵان بوو، بەڵام ئێمە بێشەرم بوین

We walked into the offices of the municipal corporation, the police,

ئیمە چوینە ناو ئۆفیسی دەزگای شارەوانی، پۆلیس

the press, businesses,

ڕۆژنامەکان، بارەگای بازرگانییەکان

and basically said, "When are you going to wake up

بنچینەی قسەکانمان بریتی بوو لە ''کەی لە خەو هەڵدەستن''

and recognize the potential that resides in every child?

وە دەزانن کە هێزێکی شاراوە لە ناخی هەموو منداڵێکدا هەیە؟

When will you include the child in the city?

کەی دەزانن کە منداڵ بونی هەیە لە شارەکەدا؟

Basically, open your hearts and your minds to the child."

بە تەواوی دڵ و مێشکتان بۆ منداڵان بکەنەوە

So, how did the city respond?

کەواتە، وەڵامی شارەکە چی دەبێت؟

Since 2007 every other month

لە ٢٠٠٧ -ەوە، هەموو دوو مانگ جارێک

the city closes down the busiest streets for traffic

حکومەت جادە قەرەباڵغەکان دادەخەن

and converts it into a playground for children and childhood.

وە دەیانکەن بە یاریگایەک بۆ منداڵان

Here was a city telling its child, "You can."

ئەوەتا شارەکە بە منداڵان دەڵێن ''تۆ دەتوانیت''

So, the busiest streets closed down.

We have the traffic police and municipal corporation helping us.

پۆلیسی هاتوچۆو شارەوانی هاوکارییان کردین

It gets taken over by children.

هەموی بە منداڵ گیراوە

They are skating. They are doing street plays.

خلیسکێنە دەکەن، یاریەکانی سەر جادە دەکەن

They are playing, all free, for all children.

ئەوان یاری دەکەن، یارییەکان بۆ هەموو منداڵان بە خۆڕاییە

Atul Karwal: aProCh is an organization which has been doing things for kids earlier.

And we plan to extend this to other parts of the city.

And Ahmedabad got the first child-friendly zebra crossing in the world.

هەروەها ئەحمەد ئاباد یەکەمین شوێنی پەڕینەوەی ڕەنگاو ڕەنگی سەرشەقامی بەدەست هێنا لە جیهاندا کە منداڵان دروستییان کردووە

Geet Sethi: When a city gives to the children,

گیت سێسی: کاتێک شارەکە دەدەن بە منداڵان

in the future the children will give back to the city.

لە داهاتودا منداڵان پاداشت دەدەنەوە بە شارەکە

KBS: And because of that,

Ahmedabad is known as India's first child-friendly city.

ئەحمەد ئەباد ناسراوە بە یەکەمین هاوڕێی منداڵانی هندستان

So, you're getting the pattern. First 200 children at Riverside.

کەواتە، ئێستا لە بیرۆکەکە تێگەیشتن یەکەمجار ٢٠٠ منداڵ لە ریڤەرساید

Then 30,000 children in Ahmedabad, and growing.

پاشان ٣٠،٠٠٠ منداڵ لە ئەحمەد ئاباد، تا بێت زیاتریش دەبێت

It was time now to infect India.

ئێستا کاتی هاتووە کە کاریگەری بکەینە سەر هیندستان

So, on August 15th,

کەواتە، لە ١٥ ئاب دا

again, Independence Day, 2009,

دووبارە، ڕۆژی ئازادی، ٢٠٠٩

empowered with the same process,

بە هەمان شێوەی پڕۆسەکەی پێشوو

we empowered 100,000 children to say, "I can."

هانی ١٠٠،٠٠٠ منداڵمان دا کە بڵێن ''من دەتوانم''

How? We designed a simple toolkit,

چۆن؟ دیزاینی هەندێ شتی تازەمان کرد

converted it into eight languages,

وەرمانگێڕایە سەر هەشت زمان

and reached 32,000 schools.

وە گەیشتە ٣٢،٠٠٠ قوتابخانە

We basically gave children a very simple challenge.

لە بنچینەدا بەرەنگاری کردنێکی زۆر ئاسانمان دانا

We said, take one idea,

پێمان وتن، یەک بیرۆکە وەربگرن

anything that bothers you,

هەرشتێک بێزاری کردیت

choose one week,

یەک هەفتە هەڵبژێرن و

and change a billion lives.

بڕۆن بلوێنەها ژیان بگۆڕن

And they did. Stories of change

توانیان بیکەن، چیرۆکی گۆڕانکاری

poured in from all over India,

تەشەنەی کرد لە هەموو هندستاندا

from Nagaland in the east,

لە (ناگەلاند)ەوە لە خۆرهەڵات

to Jhunjhunu in the west,

تاکو (چونجونون) لە خۆرئاوا

from Sikkim in the north, to Krishnagiri in the south.

لە (سکیم) لە باکورەوە تاکو (کریشنگای) لە باشور

Children were designing solutions for a diverse range of problems.

منداڵان دیزاینی چارەسەری نوێێان کرد بۆ کۆمەڵێک کێشەی جۆراو جۆر

Right from loneliness to filling potholes in the street

ڕاستەوخۆ، لە بری ئەوەی بە تەنیا دابنیشن و ببنە هۆکاری کێشە لەسەر شەقامەکان

to alcoholism,

لە بری ئەوەی ئالودە ببن بە مادە کهولییەکانەوە

and 32 children who stopped 16 child marriages

٣٢ منداڵ وازیان هێنا و ١٦ یان ژیانی هاوسەرگیریان کرد

in Rajasthan.

لە راجستان

I mean, it was incredible.

مەبەستم ئەوەیە، ئەوە سەرسوڕهێنەر بوو

Basically again reaffirming that when adults believe in children

دوبارە لە بنچینەدا کاتێک هەرزەکارەکان بڕوا بە منداڵان دەکەن

and say, "You can," then they will.

وە دەڵێن ''تۆ دەتوانی'' ئەوانیش دەتوانن

Infection in India.

ئەمەش پەتاکەی هیندستانە

This is in Rajasthan, a rural village.

ئەمە راجاستانە، کە لادێە

Child: Our parents are illiterate and we want to teach them how to read and write.

باوانمان نەخوێندەوارن ئێمەش دەمانەوێت فێری نوسین و خوێندنەوەیان بکەین

KBS: First time, a rally and a street play in a rural school --

یەکەمین یاری ڕاڵی و یارییەکانی سەرشەقام لە قوتابخانەی لادێکاندا

unheard of -- to tell their parents why literacy is important.

ئەوان نەیان بیستبوو، کەس بە باوانیانی نەگوتبوو کە خوێندەواری چەند گرنگە

Look at what their parents says.

تەماشا بکەن بزانن باوانیان دەڵێن چی

Man: This program is wonderful.

ئەم پرۆگرامە زۆر باشە

We feel so nice that our children can teach us how to read and write.

هەستێکی زۆر خۆش بوو، منداڵەکانمان دەتوانن فێری خوێندنەوە و نوسینمان بکەن

Woman: I am so happy that my students did this campaign.

من زۆر دڵخۆشم بەوەی کە قوتابیەکانم توانیان ئەوە بکەن

In the future, I will never doubt my students' abilities.

لە داهاتودا، من هەرگیز گومان لە توانای قوتابیەکانم ناکەم

See? They have done it.

بینیتان، ئەوان توانیان بیکەن

pretty difficult, but they did it.

Woman: Even though they are so young, they have done such good work.

لەگەڵ ئەوەی کە زۆر منداڵن، بەڵام کاری زۆر باشیان کردووە

First they have cleaned the society, then it will be Hyderabad, and soon India.

Woman: It was a revelation for me. It doesn't strike me

ئەمە وەک ئیلهامێک وابوو بۆ من، وا دیار نەبوو

that they had so much inside them.

کە ئەوان هێندە شتیان لە ناخدا هەبێت

Girl: Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.

For our auction we have some wonderful paintings for you,

Street plays, auctions, petitions.

شانۆی سەر جادە، هەڕاج کردن، سکاڵا نامە

I mean, they were changing lives.

واتە, ئەوان ژیان دەگۆڕن

It was incredible.

زۆر نایاب بوو

So, how can we still stay immune?

کەواتە، چۆن بتوانین بە بەهێزی بمێنینەوە؟

How can we stay immune to that passion, that energy, that excitement?

چۆن بتوانین بەهێز بمێنینەوە لەو سۆز و تینە؟ لەو هێزە؟ لەو هەستە زۆرە؟

I know it's obvious,

دەزانم ئەوە ئاشکرایە

but I have to end with the most powerful symbol of change, Gandhiji.

بەڵام دەمەوێت کە کۆتایی قسەکانم بە باسکردنی بەهێزترین سومبولی گۆڕان بێت کە ئەویش غاندی-یە

70 years ago, it took one man

٧٠ ساڵ لەمەوبەر، تەنها یەک پیاو بەس بوو

to infect an entire nation

تا کاریگەری بکاتە سەر نەتەوەیەک

with the power of "We can."

بە هێزی ''ئێمە دەتوانین''

So, today who is it going to take

کەواتە، ئەمڕۆ کێیە ئەو کەسە

to spread the infection from 100,000 children

کە بتوانێت ئەم پەتایە بگوازێتەوە لە ١٠٠،٠٠٠ منداڵەوە

to the 200 million children in India?

بۆ ٢٠٠ ملێۆن منداڵ لە هندستان؟

Last I heard, the preamble still said, "We, the people of India," right?

کۆتا شت کە بیستم، پێشینەکانمان دەڵێن کە '' ئێمە خەڵکی هندستانین'' وانیە؟

So, if not us, then who?

کەواتە، ئەگەر ئێمە نەبین ئەی کێ بیکات ؟

If not now, then when?

ئەگەر ئێستا نەبێت کەواتە کەی؟

Like I said, contagious is a good word.

وەک وتم، پەتا (تەشەنە کردن) وشەیەکی جوانە
