Contagious is a good word.

伝染という良い言葉があります

Even in the times of H1N1, I like the word.

Laughter is contagious. Passion is contagious.

Inspiration is contagious.

ひらめきも伝染します

We've heard some remarkable stories from some remarkable speakers.

素晴らしいスピーカーから素晴らしい話を伺ってきて

But for me, what was contagious about all of them

was that they were infected by something I call the

"I Can" bug.

So, the question is, why only them?

すると なぜこの人達だけが? という疑問が生じます

In a country of a billion people and some,

10億人以上が住む国の中で

why so few?

何人が持っているでしょうか

Is it luck? Is it chance?

幸運や機会に恵まれただけでしょうか?

Can we all not systematically and consciously

我々みんなに 組織的に意図的に

get infected?

感染させることはできないのでしょうか?

So, in the next eight minutes I would like to share with you my story.

これから８分間 私の経験を紹介します

I got infected when I was 17,

私は17歳で感染しました

when, as a student of the design college,

その当時はデザイン科の大学生だった私の

I encountered adults who actually believed in my ideas,

アイデアを 信頼してくれる大人が

challenged me and had lots of cups of chai with me.

チャイを何杯も飲みながら 議論してくれたのがきっかけでした

And I was struck by just how wonderful it felt,

それは 素晴らしい感覚で

and how contagious that feeling was.

その感覚が 伝染することに驚きました

I also realized I should have got infected when I was seven.

そして7歳の時に感染していても良かったのだとも気付きました

So, when I started Riverside school 10 years ago it became a lab,

10年前にリバーサイド校を始めたときに それは実験室でした

a lab to prototype and refine a design process

“I Can” の精神を感染させるための方法を

that could consciously infect the mind with the "I Can" bug.

試行錯誤していく実験でした

And I uncovered

わかったことは

that if learning is embedded in real-world context,

実社会の文脈で学び

that if you blur the boundaries between school and life,

学校と社会を区別しないことで

then children go through a journey of "aware,"

子どもたちに次のような学びが得られます

where they can see the change,

「気づき」 違いを知る

"enable," be changed,

「できる」 自分が変わる

and then "empower," lead the change.

「自信」 変革をみちびく

And that directly increased student wellbeing.

このことは生徒に充実感をもたらし

Children became more competent,

生徒たちはさらに成長して

and less helpless.

無力感から解放されます

But this was all common sense.

当たり前といえばそのとおり

So, I'd like to show you a little glimpse of what

ではリバーサイドのいつものやり方を

common practice looks like at Riverside.

いくつかお目にかけましょう

A little background: when my grade five was learning about child rights,

they were made to roll incense sticks,

to experience what it means to be a child laborer.

It transformed them. What you will see is their journey,

and then their utter conviction

that they could go out and change the world.

That's them rolling.

And in two hours, after their backs were broke,

they were changed.

And once that happened,

they were out in the city convincing everybody

that child labor just had to be abolished.

無くさなければならないと皆に訴えました

And look at Ragav, that moment when his face changes

ラガフくんを見てください　大人の考え方を

because he's been able to understand that he

変えられたことが分かった途端に

has shifted that man's mindset.

表情が変わります

And that can't happen in a classroom.

教室では体験できないことです

So, when Ragav experienced that

ラガフはこの経験を通して

he went from "teacher told me,"

先生に教わったことから

to "I am doing it." And that's the "I Can" mindshift.

自分でしていることに到達し “I Can” に目覚めます

And it is a process that can be energized and nurtured.

そうなるように推奨して育成することができます

But we had parents who said,

しかし こんなことを言う親もいます

"Okay, making our children good human beings is all very well,

立派な人になるのは結構なことだが

but what about math and science and English?

算数や理科や英語はどうなるのだ

Show us the grades."

成績票を拝見したいものだ

And we did. The data was conclusive.

お見せしましょう　決定的なデータです

When children are empowered,

子どもたちが自信を持つと

not only do they do good,

良い行動をするだけではなく

they do well, in fact very well,

実際 学業でも良い成績を上げます

as you can see in this national benchmarking assessment

全国の2千校で行われた

taken by over 2,000 schools in India,

学力テストによれば

Riverside children were outperforming the top 10 schools in India

リバーサイド校の児童の算数や英語 理科の成績は

in math, English and science.

インドの上位10校を上回りました

So, it worked. It was now time to take it outside Riverside.

上出来ですね　このやり方をリバーサイド校の外に展開する機は熟しました

So, on August 15th, Independence Day, 2007,

2007 年の独立記念日 8月15日に

the children of Riverside set out to infect Ahmedabad.

リバーサイド校の子どもたちはアフマダーバードの街中に伝えるために出かけました

Now it was not about Riverside school.

もはやリバーサイドだけはなく

It was about all children. So, we were shameless.

全ての子どもの問題なので 思い切ったことをしました

We walked into the offices of the municipal corporation, the police,

市役所や警察署 新聞社や事務所などを

the press, businesses,

訪問しました

and basically said, "When are you going to wake up

こんな訴えをしました 「いつになったら

and recognize the potential that resides in every child?

子どもの秘めた可能性に目覚めて気づいてもらえるでしょう?

When will you include the child in the city?

子どもが市民の一員になるのはいつでしょう?

Basically, open your hearts and your minds to the child."

どうか 子どものことに気持と意識を向けて下さい」

So, how did the city respond?

市からの返答はどうだったでしょう

Since 2007 every other month

2007年以来 ふた月に一度

the city closes down the busiest streets for traffic

市が 目抜き通りを閉鎖して

and converts it into a playground for children and childhood.

Here was a city telling its child, "You can."

市から 子どもたちに “You can” と伝えています

So, the busiest streets closed down.

We have the traffic police and municipal corporation helping us.

交通警官と市役所が支援してくれました

It gets taken over by children.

子どもたちでいっぱいです

They are skating. They are doing street plays.

スケートをしたり 青空演劇をしたり

They are playing, all free, for all children.

遊んだり どの子も無料で参加できます

Atul Karwal: aProCh is an organization which has been doing things for kids earlier.

「アプローチ」は以前から子どものために活動してきた団体です

And we plan to extend this to other parts of the city.

活動を市内各地域へ展開する計画です

市当局は自由に出来る時間を与えます

And Ahmedabad got the first child-friendly zebra crossing in the world.

こうしてアフマダーバードには世界初の子ども向けの横断歩道が完成しました

Geet Sethi: When a city gives to the children,

市から子どもたちに与えれば将来

in the future the children will give back to the city.

子どもたちは市に報いてくれるでしょう

Ahmedabad is known as India's first child-friendly city.

So, you're getting the pattern. First 200 children at Riverside.

Then 30,000 children in Ahmedabad, and growing.

それからアフマダーバードの3万人へと拡大して

It was time now to infect India.

いよいよインドに広める時が来ました

So, on August 15th,

今度も 8月15日です

again, Independence Day, 2009,

2009年の ― 今回も独立記念日に

empowered with the same process,

同じプロセスで

we empowered 100,000 children to say, "I can."

10万人の子どもを後押しして “I Can” と言わせました

How? We designed a simple toolkit,

手順は?　簡単なキットをデザインして

converted it into eight languages,

それを8言語に翻訳し

and reached 32,000 schools.

3万2千の学校に届けました

We basically gave children a very simple challenge.

子どもたちに与える課題は簡単なものです

We said, take one idea,

どんなことでもいいので

anything that bothers you,

気になるアイデアを一つ選んで

choose one week,

一週間かけて取り組んで

and change a billion lives.

10億人の人生を変えましょう

And they did. Stories of change

彼らはやってくれました

poured in from all over India,

変化の報告がインド中から殺到しました

from Nagaland in the east,

東はナガランドから

to Jhunjhunu in the west,

西はジュンジュヌまで

from Sikkim in the north, to Krishnagiri in the south.

北はシッキムから南のクリシュナギリまで

Children were designing solutions for a diverse range of problems.

Right from loneliness to filling potholes in the street

to alcoholism,

and 32 children who stopped 16 child marriages

ラジャスタンでは32人の児童が

in Rajasthan.

16件の児童結婚を中止させました

I mean, it was incredible.

Basically again reaffirming that when adults believe in children

繰り返しますが 大人が子どもたちを信頼して

and say, "You can," then they will.

“You can” と言えば 子どもたちは成し遂げます

Infection in India.

インド中が感染して広まります

This is in Rajasthan, a rural village.

ラジャスタンの田舎です

Child: Our parents are illiterate and we want to teach them how to read and write.

両親にも文字を読めるようになって欲しいのです

KBS: First time, a rally and a street play in a rural school --

地元の学校で開かれた集会と青空演劇を通して

unheard of -- to tell their parents why literacy is important.

識字の大切さを親たちに訴えるという初の試みです

Look at what their parents says.

Man: This program is wonderful.

このプログラムはすばらしい

We feel so nice that our children can teach us how to read and write.

子どもたちに読み書きを教えてもらえるなんて最高だ

Woman: I am so happy that my students did this campaign.

In the future, I will never doubt my students' abilities.

See? They have done it.

pretty difficult, but they did it.

Woman: Even though they are so young, they have done such good work.

First they have cleaned the society, then it will be Hyderabad, and soon India.

So, how can we still stay immune?

How can we stay immune to that passion, that energy, that excitement?

この情熱とエネルギーと興奮を感じずにいられますか?

I know it's obvious,

ありきたりですが 最後に

but I have to end with the most powerful symbol of change, Gandhiji.

変化のシンボルである力強い偉人 ガンジーに触れます

70 years ago, it took one man

70年前のこと

to infect an entire nation

“We can” の力は一人の男から

with the power of "We can."

国中に伝染しました

So, today who is it going to take

今日 この10万人の子どもたちから

to spread the infection from 100,000 children

2億人のインドの子どもに伝染させるのは

to the 200 million children in India?

誰の役目でしょうか

Last I heard, the preamble still said, "We, the people of India," right?

インド憲法前文には今も “我らインドの人民は”と記されています

So, if not us, then who?

そう 我々以外には誰もいません

If not now, then when?

今以外にその時はありません

Like I said, contagious is a good word.

伝染という良い言葉があると申し上げたとおりです
