It all started with a crazy idea

I asked people to anonymously share an artful secret

they'd never told anyone before.

And I handed out these postcards randomly

그리고 저는 워싱턴 D.C.의 거리에서

on the streets of Washington, D.C.,

not knowing what to expect.

But soon the idea began spreading virally.

People began to buy their own postcards

and make their own postcards.

I started receiving secrets in my home mailbox,

not just with postmarks from Washington, D.C.,

but from Texas, California,

텍사스, 캘리포니아,

Vancouver, New Zealand, Iraq.

Soon my crazy idea didn't seem so crazy.

What I'd like to do now

is share with you a very special handful of secrets

이 엽서들 중에서

from that collection,

특별한 비밀을 몇개 보여드리겠습니다.

starting with this one.

이것부터 시작해보죠.

"I found these stamps as a child,

"저는 어렸을때 이 우표들을 찾았는데

and I have been waiting all my life

평생동안 누구엔가 이 우표들을

to have someone to send them to.

쓸 수 있게 되기를 바랬는데

I never did have someone."

Secrets can take many forms.

비밀에는 다양한 형태가 있죠.

They can be shocking

어떤것들은 충격적이거나,

or silly or soulful.

우스꽝스럽거나, 또는 감성적일 수 있죠.

They can connect us to our deepest humanity

비밀은 우리 마음속의 가장 깊은 곳과 연결시켜 주기도 하고,

or with people we'll never meet.

또는 만난적이 없는 사람들과도 연결시켜 주죠.

"저는 저에게 무례한 고객들에게는 디카프 커피를 줍니다." (웃음)

Maybe one of you sent this one in.

아마도 여러분중 한분이 보냈을 지도 모르죠.

I don't know.

알 도리가 없죠.

This one does a great job of demonstrating

이건 자신이 만든 엽서를

the creativity that people have

저에게 보내는 사람들의

when they make and mail me a postcard.

창의성을 보여주는 좋은 예지요.

This one obviously was made out of half a Starbucks cup

분명히 이 엽서는 스타벅스 컵을 반으로 자르고

with a stamp and my home address written on the other side.

우표와 저희집 주소를 뒷편에 써서 보낸것이죠.

"Dear Birthmother, I have great parents.

"저의 생모에게, 저에게는 훌륭한 부모님이 계십니다.

I've found love. I'm happy."

저는 사랑을 찾았고, 행복합니다."

Secrets can remind us of the countless human dramas,

비밀은 우리 주위의 사람들이

of frailty and heroism,

지금 이 순간에도 우리의 나약하거나

playing out silently

영웅적인 행동이 만드는

in the lives of people all around us

수많은 인간드라마를

even now.

상기시켜 주지요.

"Everyone who knew me before 9/11

"9.11 테러 사건 이전에 저를 알던 사람들은

believes I'm dead."

제가 죽은걸로 알고 있습니다."

"I used to work with a bunch of uptight religious people,

so sometimes I didn't wear panties,

and just had a big smile and chuckled to myself."

This next one takes a little explanation before I share it with you.

I love to speak on college campuses

and share secrets and the stories with students.

And sometimes afterwards I'll stick around

and sign books and take photos with students.

And this next postcard was made

out of one of those photos.

And I should also mention that, just like today,

at that PostSecret event,

I was using a wireless microphone.

제가 무선 마이크를 사용하고 있었죠.

"Your mic wasn't off during sound check.

"사운드 체크를 한 후 당신이 마이크를

We all heard you pee."

끄지 않아서 우리들이 전부 오줌누는 소리를 들었어요".

(Laughter)

This was really embarrassing when it happened,

저는 그때 매우 쑥스럽게 느꼈었는데

until I realized it could have been worse.

생각해 보면 훨씬 더 무안하게 느꼈을 수도 있었죠.

Right. You know what I'm saying.

무슨 말인지 아실겁니다.

"Inside this envelope

"이 봉투의 안에는

is the ripped up remains

내가 사용은 하지 않고 찢은

of a suicide note I didn't use.

자살 유서의 조각들이 있습니다.

I feel like the happiest person on Earth (now.)"

저는 지금 지구상에서 가장 행복한 사람이라고 생각합니다."

"One of these men is the father of my son.

"이 사람들중에 한명이 제 아들의 아버지입니다.

He pays me a lot to keep it a secret."

그사람은 이 비밀을 지키려고 저한테 많은 돈을 줍니다."

"That Saturday when you wondered where I was,

"내가 어디 있었는지 당신이 궁금해했던 그 토요일에

well, I was getting your ring.

사실 나는 당신의 반지를 사고 있었는데

It's in my pocket right now."

지금 그 반지가 내 주머니속에 있어요."

I had this postcard posted on the PostSecret blog

저는 2년전 발렌타인 데이때

two years ago on Valentine's Day.

이 엽서를 PostSecret 블로그에 올렸죠.

It was the very bottom, the last secret in the long column.

그런데 그 카드는 긴 칼럼의 제일 밑바닥에

And it hadn't been up for more than a couple hours

실렸었는데

before I received this exuberant email

저는 그 엽서를 보냈던 친구로부터

from the guy who mailed me this postcard.

아주 흥분된 이메일을 받았죠.

And he said, "Frank, I've got to share with you

그 친구가 말하길, "프랭크,

this story that just played out in my life."

방금 저한테 일어났던 이야기를 말해주겠는데

He said, "My knees are still shaking."

그 친구가 말했죠, "아직도 제 무릎이 흔들려요.

He said, "For three years, my girlfriend and I,

지난 3년간 저와 제 여자친구는

we've made it this Sunday morning ritual

매 일요일마다 PostSecret 블로그를

to visit the PostSecret blog together

방문해서 거기에 올라온

and read the secrets out loud.

비밀 스토리들을 읽었는데

I read some to her, she reads some to me."

우린 번갈아 가며 비밀 스토리를 읽었어요."

He says, "It's really brought us closer together

그리고 그 친구가 말하기를

through the years.

"그건 수년간 우리를 더 가깝게 해주었죠.

And so when I discovered

그런데 당신이

that you had posted

저의 깜짝 프로포즈 글을

my surprise proposal to my girlfriend at the very bottom,

맨 밑에 올린것을 알았을 때

I was beside myself.

저는 좋아서 어쩔줄을 몰랐지만

And I tried to act calm, not to give anything away.

아무런 낌새를 보이지 않으려고 애를 썼어요.

And just like every Sunday,

보통 일요일 처럼

we started reading the secrets out loud to each other."

우리는 서로에게 비밀 스토리들을 읽어주기 시작했지요. "

He said, "But this time it seemed like it was taking her forever

to get through each one."

But she finally did.

결국 그녀는 다 읽고

She got to that bottom secret, his proposal to her.

And he said, "She read it once and then she read it again."

"제 여자친구는 읽고, 또 한번 읽었어요. "라고 말했죠.

And she turned to him and said,

그러고는 그녀가 그친구를 보며

"Is that our cat?"

"이거 우리 고양이야?"라고 말했죠.

And when she saw him,

그리고 그녀가 그에게 시선을 돌렸을때

he was down on one knee, he had the ring out.

그는 무릎을 꿇고 반지를 꺼내

He popped the question, she said yes. It was a very happy ending.

청혼을 하고 그녀는 청혼을 받아 드리고 아주 행복한 결말로 끝났죠.

So I emailed him back

그래서 제가 그 친구에게 이메일을 보내며

and I said, "Please share with me an image, something,

부탁을 하나했죠 -- "PostSecret 사이트에서

that I can share with the whole PostSecret community

많은 사람들이 당신의 동화같은 이야기를 알수있게

and let everyone know your fairy tale ending."

사진을 한장 보내주시면 고맙겠어요."라고요.-

And he emailed me this picture.

그랬더니 그 친구가 이 사진을 보내왔죠.

"I found your camera at Lollapalooza this summer.

"저는 이번 여름에 롤라팔루자에서 당신의 카메라를 줏고

I finally got the pictures developed

사진들을 현상했는데

and I'd love to give them to you."

당신한테 보낼 수 있으면 좋겠네요.".

This picture never got returned back

이 사진은 카메라 주인에게

to the people who lost it,

돌려 보내주지 못했지만

but this secret has impacted many lives,

이 비밀은 많은 사람에게 영향을 주었죠.

starting with a student up in Canada

그중 한사람은 캐나다에 있는

named Matty.

매티라는 학생이었죠.

Matty was inspired by that secret

매티는 그 비밀에 영감을 받아

to start his own website,

"IFoundYourCamera"라는

a website called IFoundYourCamera.

웹사이트를 만들었죠.

Matty invites people

매티는 사람들에게 그들이 줏은

to mail him digital cameras that they've found,

디지탈 카메라와 메모리 스틱에

memory sticks that have been lost

사진이 들어 있으면 그걸

with orphan photos.

그에게 보내달라고 하고

And Matty takes the pictures off these cameras

매티는 그런 사진들을 카메라에서 빼서

and posts them on his website every week.

And people come to visit

to see if they can identify a picture they've lost

or help somebody else get the photos back to them

This one's my favorite.

Matty has found this ingenious way

to leverage the kindness of strangers.

사용할 수 있는 기발한 방법을 찾은거죠.

And it might seem like a simple idea, and it is,

이건 간단한 아이디어라고 할 수 있는데 사실 그렇죠.

but the impact it can have on people's lives can be huge.

하지만 이것이 사람들의 삶에 미치는 영향은 매우 클 수 있죠.

Matty shared with me

매티는 저 사진에

an emotional email he received

나오는 어머니로 부터 받은

from the mother in that picture.

감동적인 이메일을 저에게 보냈습니다.

"That's me, my husband and son.

"이게 제 남편, 아들, 그리고 저입니다.

The other pictures are of my very ill grandmother.

다른 사진들은 아주 편찮으신 저의 할머님이구요.

These pictures mean more to me than you know.

Every picture that you see there

and thousands of others

have been returned back to the person who lost it --

주인들에게 돌아갔습니다. --

sometimes crossing oceans,

때로는 대양을 건너서 전해지기도 하고,

sometimes going through language barriers.

때로는 언어적인 장벽도 뚫고 전해졌죠.

This is the last postcard I have to share with you today.

이 사진은 오늘 제가 여러분께 보여드릴 마지막 사진입니다.

"When people I love

leave voicemails on my phone

제 전화기에 음성메세지를 남길때

I always save them in case they die tomorrow

그들이 내일 죽을지도 모르니까 저는 메세지를 항상 저장하죠.

and I have no other way

of hearing their voice ever again."

When I posted this secret,

제가 이 비밀을 제 사이트에 올렸을 때,

dozens of people

수십명의 사람들이 그들의 전화기에

sent voicemail messages from their phones,

저장됐던 음성메세지를 보냈는데

sometimes ones they'd been keeping for years,

어떤것은 수년간 보관됐던

messages from family or friends

이미 고인이된 가족이나 친구들의

who had died.

메세지들이었지요.

They said that by preserving those voices

그들은 그런 음성 메세지를 보관하고,

and sharing them,

함께 공유하는 것은 사랑하는

it helped them keep the spirit of their loved ones alive.

사람들의 추억을 기억하는데 도움이 된다고 말했죠.

One young girl

한 소녀는 그녀의 할머니가

posted the last message

마지막으로 남긴 음성 메세지를

she ever heard from her grandmother.

올리기도 했죠.

Secrets can take many forms.

비밀은 다양한 형태를 가집니다.
