Well, I’m here today to prove it’s not.

Hi, I’m Molly and I’m seven.

And this is my little friend, Ari.

Say “Hi,” Ari.

Hi.

Oh, and this is my neighbor, Amarjot.

He has to take Ari away now to get ready for our experiment.

My talk today is about some powerful things you grownups can do.

오늘 여러분, 어른들이 할 수 있는 위대한 일에 대해 말하고자 합니다.

that shape us as children and the adults we become.

우리가 어떤 어린이가 되고, 어떤 어른으로 자랄지 형성하는 일이죠.

How do I know?

제가 어떻게 아냐고요?

왜냐면 제 부모님과 주변 사람들이 일찍 그리고 자주 그렇게 해주었거든요.

Because my parents and people around me did them early and often.

I know not all kids are as lucky.

아이들이 다 이렇지 않은 건 알아요.

Some of my friends, some kids at my school and many around the world.

친구들이나, 학교 아이들 중 몇몇, 세계의 많은 아이들이 그렇죠.

And I would really like to help change that.

전 그런 현실을 정말 바꾸고 싶어요.

Thanks to scientists,

과학자들 덕분에,

we now know just how important the first five years are

이제 처음 5년이 우리의 건강과 발달에 얼마나 중요한지 압니다.

for our health and development,

especially our brains.

특히 뇌에요.

Ari started learning long before he was even born,

아리는 태어나기도 전부터 배우기 시작했습니다.

from inside his mommy’s tummy.

When Ari was born,

he was tiny and he cried all the time.

He was always hungry and he pooped a lot.

Now he laughs and giggles and makes funny noises.

이제는 웃기도 하고 재밌는 소리를 내기도 해요.

But those are just the changes we hear and see.

하지만 이런 변화들은 오직 표면적인 것들에 지나지 않아요.

That’s way more going on inside.

내면에서는 더 많은 변화가 일어나고 있습니다.

So, let’s talk more about our brains.

그럼, 뇌에 대해 좀 더 이야기를 해 볼까요.

The blue bag is a rough size and weight of a healthy baby’s brain at birth.

이 파란 주머니는 갓 태어난 건강한 아기의 뇌와 대충 크기가 비슷합니다.

The red one is a baby’s brain after the first year.

빨간 것은 돌이 된 아기의 뇌와 같죠.

It almost doubles in volume.

거의 2배 커집니다.

제 나이 무렵에는 성인 뇌의 거의 90%가 돼요.

And by my age, it's almost 90 percent the volume of an adult brain.

Our brains develop faster in our early years

뇌는 어릴 때에 훨씬 빨리 발달합니다.

than at any other time in our lives.

다른 어느 때보다도요.

It can create up to one million neural connections every second.

매 초마다 신경 연결을 백만 개까지 만들어내는 정도입니다.

But we need your help.

하지만 그러려면 도움이 필요합니다.

Our healthy development depends on these top five things,

아이들의 건강한 발달은 이 다섯 가지에 달렸습니다.

One, connecting; two, talking;

첫째는 연결, 둘째는 말하기,

three, playing; four, a healthy home,

셋째는 놀이, 넷째는 건전한 가정,

five; community.

다섯째는 공동체입니다.

All of this helps our brains and us reach our full potential.

이 모든 것이 우리의 뇌를 도와 최대의 잠재력을 낼 수 있게 해요.

So what’s something you can do that can really make a difference?

그렇다면 여러분이 실제로 변화를 이뤄낼 수 있는 일이 무엇일까요?

Scientists call it serve and return.

That’s just a grown-up way of saying connect, talk and play with us.

And here’s the really big news.

MW: Each time you talk to us, play with us, make us laugh,

it not only builds and strengthens our relationships and mental health,

it actually teaches us some of the most important life skills,

from making friends to taking the test,

친구 사귀기, 시험 보기, 직업 구하기,

to getting a job,

to one day maybe even starting a family of our own.

그리고 언젠가는 자신의 가정을 꾸리는 일까지 이어지죠.

Interactions early and often matter.

이르고 잦은 상호 작용은 아주 중요합니다.

Take it from me,

the seven-year-old up here talking about brain science.

OK, now let’s see what happens when the connection is taken away.

So now he’s trying to get his dad’s attention again.

아기가 다시 아빠의 관심을 돌리려고 하고 있네요.

He’s reaching out like, “That was fun, why have you stopped?”

마치 “아빠, 재밌는데 왜 그만하는 거예요?”라고 하는 것 같아요.

(Ari cries)

(아리의 울음)

I know it’s important for adults to use their devices sometimes,

어른들한테 전자기기를 쓰는 게 어떨 때는 중요하다는 건 알지만

but kids are hardwired to seek out meaningful connections,

아이들은 본능적으로 유의미한 연결을 찾아요.

not receiving them causes confusion and stress.

그런 연결을 얻지 못하면 당황하고 스트레스를 받습니다.

OK, Amarjot, please re-engage.

좋아요, 아마르조트, 다시 해주세요.

Amarjot: Ah, there’s Ari.

아마르조트: 아, 우리 아리 여깄네.

(Ari laughs)

MW: Now what if our whole childhood was like that last 30 seconds?

How hard it would be for a child to feel calm.

Ari only reacted the way he did and recovered so quickly

아리가 이렇게 행동하고 빨리 원래대로 돌아올 수 있었던 건

because the connection between him and his dad is usually so strong.

평소 아버지와의 관계가 아주 강했기 때문이에요.

The positive relationships with the grown-ups in our lives

우리는 인생에서 어른들과 갖는 긍정적인 관계들에서

gives kids the confidence we need

필요한 자신감을 얻게 되고

to try new things, to explore and be a kid.

새로운 것들을 시도하며 탐구할 수 있게 됩니다.

어린이답게 되는 거죠.

So please,

그러니 부디,

try to remember the most special period for our development is

아이들의 발달에 가장 중요한 시기를 기억해주세요.

the first five years.

처음 5년 간이랍니다.

Starting from inside mommy’s tummy.

어머니의 배 속에 있을 때부터 시작해서요.

What’s something really impactful you can do?

여러분이 할 수 있는 가장 영향력 큰 일이 뭐라고요?

Serve and return.
