I call myself a body architect.

I worked at Philips Electronics

in the far-future design research lab,

looking 20 years into the future.

I explored the human skin, and how technology can transform the body.

어떻게 인체의 외관을 일변시킬 수 있는가를 연구했죠.

I worked on concepts like an electronic tattoo,

저는 손으로 피부를 만질 때 증강현실로 문신이

which is augmented by touch,

나타나게 하는 전자 타투나, 여러색의

or dresses that blushed and shivered with light.

빛이 나와서 춤추며 전율하는 드레스 같은 컨셉을 연구했죠.

I started my own experiments.

그 후 저는 독자적인 실험을 하기 시작했는데

These were the low-tech approaches to the high-tech conversations I was having.

지금까지 보여드린 하이텍이 아닌 로우텍 방식이었죠.

These are Q-tips stuck to my roommate with wig glue.

이건 제 룸메이트의 몸에 가발 접착제로 면봉을 붙인겁니다.

I started a collaboration with a friend of mine, Bart Hess --

저는 제 친구인 바트 헤스와 공동작업을 했죠 --

he doesn't normally look like this --

and we used ourselves as models.

저희는 저희 자신을 모델로 사용했어요.

We transformed our apartments into our laboratories,

저희는 저희의 아파트를 실험실로 만들고

and worked in a very spontaneous and immediate way.

We were creating

visual imagery provoking human evolution.

Whilst I was at Philips, we discussed this idea of a maybe technology,

something that wasn't either switched on or off, but in between.

테크노놀로지가 아닌 "어쩌면 테크놀로지"라는 아이디어를 의논했었죠.

A maybe that could take the form of a gas or a liquid.

And I became obsessed with this idea of blurring the perimeter of the body,

그러다가 저는 인체의 변두리가 애매하게 돼서 어디까지가 피부고 어디서부터

so you couldn't see where the skin ended and the near environment started.

주변 환경이 시작하는지 모를 수 있다는 아이디어에 집착하게 됐지요.

I set up my studio in the red-light district

그후, 저는 홍등가 지역에 스튜디오를 만들고

and obsessively wrapped myself in plumbing tubing,

제 몸을 배관파이프로 칭칭감아서 우리의 피부를

and found a way to redefine the skin

새로 정의하는 이러한 다이나믹한 옷감을

and create this dynamic textile.

만드는 방법을 찾아냈죠.

I was introduced to Robyn, the Swedish pop star,

저는 스웨덴의 팝스타인 로빈에게 소개됬었는데

and she was also exploring

그녀는 테크놀로지가 인간의 벌거벗은 감정과

how technology coexists with raw human emotion.

어떻게 공존할 수 있는가를 탐구하고 있었지요.

And she talked about how technology with these new feathers,

그녀는 새로운 깃털, 페이스 페인트, 펑크 예술에 테크놀로지를

this new face paint, this punk, the way that we identify with the world,

적용해서 어떻게 저희의 주체성을 나타낼 수 있을 가를 얘기했고

and we made this music video.

저희는 이 음악비디오를 만들었죠.

I'm fascinated with the idea

저는 생물학과 테크놀로지를 합치는

of what happens when you merge biology with technology,

아이디어에 큰 관심을 가지고 있는데 앞으로는

and I remember reading about this idea of being able to reprogram

우리의 몸을 재 프로그래밍해서 노화현상을 방지하고

biology, in the future, away from disease and aging.

병에 걸리지 않게 할 수 있을 것이라고 어디서 읽었죠.

And I thought about this concept of,

저는 그래서 우리가 만약에 우리의 신체를

imagine if we could reprogram

재 프로그래밍해서 우리의 체취를

our own body odor, modify and biologically enhance it,

생물학적으로 향상시킬 수 있다면 우리가 다른 사람과

and how would that change the way that we communicate with each other?

커뮤니케이트하는데 어떤 변화를 가져오고 우리가

Or the way that we attract sexual partners?

섹스 파트너를 찾는 방법이 어떻게 달라질까 생각해 봤죠.

And would we revert back to being more like animals,

그러면 우리가 다시 동물로 되돌아가서 원시적인

more primal modes of communication?

방식으로 서로 커뮤니케이트하게 될까요?

I worked with a synthetic biologist,

저는 합성생물학자 한분과 같이 일한 결과

and I created a swallowable perfume,

삼킬 수 있는 향수를 만들었는데

which is a cosmetic pill that you eat

그 '화장약'을 먹으면 땀을 흘릴 때

and the fragrance comes out through the skin's surface when you perspire.

피부에서 향기가 나죠.

It completely blows apart the way that perfume is,

그 화장약은 우리가 향수라는 것을

and provides a whole new format.

완전히 재정의 할 수 있게 만들었죠.

It's perfume coming from the inside out.

그 향수는 체내에서 체외로 나오니까요.

It redefines the role of skin, and our bodies become an atomizer.

이 향수는 피부의 역할을 재정의하고 우리의 몸은 분무기가 됐죠.

I've learned that there's no boundaries,

저는 체내와 체외의 경계선이 없다는 것을

and if I look at the evolution of my work

배웠고, 지금까지 제가 한 일들을 돌이켜보면

i can see threads and connections that make sense.

모든 것이 상호연결되는 어떤 논리가 통한다는 것을 느꼈죠.

But when I look towards the future,

저는 앞으로 제가 무슨일을 하게 될 지

the next project is completely unknown and wide open.

전혀 모르지만, 그와 동시에 무한한 가능성을 느낍니다.

I feel like I have all these ideas existing embedded inside of me,

저는 이런 모든 아이디어들이 마치 제 몸속의 일부인 것처럼

and it's these conversations and these experiences

느끼며 이런 아이디어에 대한 대화와 경험이

that connect these ideas, and they kind of instinctively come out.

제 몸에서 본능적으로 우러나오는 것을 느낄 수 있습니다.

As a body architect,

저는 바디 아키텍트가 됨으로서 아무런

I've created this limitless and boundless platform

제약이나 제한이 없이 무엇이든 제가 원하는 것을

for me to discover whatever I want.

추구할 수 있는 플랫폼을 만들었다고 생각하며

And I feel like I've just got started.

제 천직을 방금 시작한 것 처럼 느낍니다.
