It's often said that you can tell a lot about a person

What do my bookshelves say about me?

제 책장으로는 뭘 알 수 있을까요?

Well, when I asked myself this question a few years ago,

I made an alarming discovery.

뜻밖의 발견을 하게 되었습니다.

저는 스스로를 매우 교양있는 세계시민이라고 생각했었습니다.

I'd always thought of myself as a fairly cultured,

cosmopolitan sort of person.

But my bookshelves told a rather different story.

하지만 책장은 다른 말을 하고 있었습니다.

Pretty much all the titles on them

거의 대부분의 책이 영국이나 북미 작가가 쓴 것이었고

were by British or North American authors,

and there was almost nothing in translation.

번역서는 거의 없었습니다.

Discovering this massive, cultural blind spot in my reading

came as quite a shock.

And when I thought about it, it seemed like a real shame.

I knew there had to be lots of amazing stories out there

by writers working in languages other than English.

And it seemed really sad to think that my reading habits meant

I would probably never encounter them.

So, I decided to prescribe myself

그래서 저는 스스로에게 세계 독서 집중 코스를 처방했습니다.

an intensive course of global reading.

2012 was set to be a very international year for the UK;

2012년은 영국에게 매우 국제적인 해였습니다.

it was the year of the London Olympics.

런던 올림픽이 열린 해였으니까요.

And so I decided to use it as my time frame

to try to read a novel, short story collection

or memoir from every country in the world.

And so I did.

And it was very exciting

and I learned some remarkable things

that I want to share with you today.

But it started with some practical problems.

After I'd worked out which of the many different lists of countries in the world

I ended up going with the list of UN-recognized nations,

which gave me a total of 196 countries.

And after I'd worked out how to fit reading and blogging

about, roughly, four books a week

around working five days a week,

I then had to face up to the fact that I might even not be able

to get books in English from every country.

Only around 4.5 percent of the literary works published

매년 영국에서 출판되는 문학작품 중 약 4.5%만이 번역서입니다.

each year in the UK are translations,

and the figures are similar for much of the English-speaking world.

다른 영미권 국가에서도 비슷한 수치입니다.

Although, the proportion of translated books published

다른 국가에서 출판되는 번역서의 비율은 영국보다는 훨씬 더 높지만요.

in many other countries is a lot higher.

4.5 percent is tiny enough to start with,

but what that figure doesn't tell you

is that many of those books will come from countries

with strong publishing networks

and lots of industry professionals primed to go out and sell those titles

So, for example, although well over 100 books are translated from French

and published in the UK each year,

most of them will come from countries like France or Switzerland.

The upshot is that there are actually quite a lot of nations

that may have little or even no commercially available literature

Their books remain invisible to readers

But when it came to reading the world,

the biggest challenge of all for me

was that fact that I didn't know where to start.

Having spent my life reading almost exclusively British

and North American books,

I had no idea how to go about sourcing and finding stories

and choosing them from much of the rest of the world.

I couldn't tell you how to source a story from Swaziland.

I wouldn't know a good novel from Namibia.

There was no hiding it --

I was a clueless literary xenophobe.

So how on earth was I going to read the world?

I was going to have to ask for help.

So in October 2011, I registered my blog,

and I posted a short appeal online.

I explained who I was,

from other parts of the planet.

Now, I had no idea whether anyone would be interested,

but within a few hours of me posting that appeal online,

people started to get in touch.

사람들에게서 연락이 왔습니다.

At first, it was friends and colleagues.

Then it was friends of friends.

And pretty soon, it was strangers.

Four days after I put that appeal online,

I got a message from a woman called Rafidah in Kuala Lumpur.

저는 쿠알라룸푸르에 사는 라피다라는 여성의 쪽지를 받았습니다.

She said she loved the sound of my project,

could she go to her local English-language bookshop

그녀가 사는 지역의 영어 서점에 가서 말레이시아 책을 골라

and choose my Malaysian book and post it to me?

저에게 보내주어도 되냐고 물었습니다.

I accepted enthusiastically,

저는 신나서 수락했습니다.

and a few weeks later,

몇 주 뒤 책이 두 권이나 담긴 택배가 도착했습니다.

a package arrived containing not one, but two books --

Rafidah's choice from Malaysia,

라피다가 고른 말레이시아 책과,

and a book from Singapore that she had also picked out for me.

저를 위해 골라준 싱가포르 책도 있었습니다.

Now, at the time, I was amazed

당시 저는 9600km나 떨어진 곳에 사는얼굴도 모르는 사람이

that a stranger more than 6,000 miles away

would go to such lengths to help someone

한 번도 만난 적 없는 누군가를 돕기 위해

she would probably never meet.

그렇게까지 할 수 있다는 것에 놀랐습니다.

하지만 저는 그런 친절을 그 해 내내 받게 되었습니다.

But Rafidah's kindness proved to be the pattern for that year.

Time and again, people went out of their way to help me.

사람들은 계속 저를 도와주려고 노력했습니다.

Some took on research on my behalf,

and others made detours on holidays and business trips

어떤 사람은 출장이나 휴가를 간 김에 저를 위해서 서점에 들러주었습니다.

to go to bookshops for me.

It turns out, if you want to read the world,

세계를 읽고자 하고, 열린 마음으로 마주하면

if you want to encounter it with an open mind,

the world will help you.

세계가 저를 도와주더군요.

When it came to countries

영어로 번역된 문학이 적거나 살 수 없는 국가에서도

with little or no commercially available literature in English,

people went further still.

사람들은 많은 도움을 주었습니다.

Books often came from surprising sources.

어떨 때는 예상치도 못한 곳에서 책이 오기도 했습니다.

My Panamanian read, for example, came through a conversation

예를 들어, 파나마 책은 제가 트위터에서 파나마 운하와

I had with the Panama Canal on Twitter.

대화를 나누면서 얻었습니다.

Yes, the Panama Canal has a Twitter account.

네, 파나마 운하도 트위터 계정이 있더군요.

And when I tweeted at it about my project,

제 프로젝트에 대해 트위터에 올렸을 때

it suggested that I might like to try and get hold of the work

파나마 운하는 파나마 작가인 후안 다비드 모르간의

of the Panamanian author Juan David Morgan.

작품을 찾아보라고 추천했습니다.

I found Morgan's website and I sent him a message,

저는 모르간 씨의 웹사이트를 찾아서

asking if any of his Spanish-language novels

그의 스페인어 저서 중 영어로 번역된 소설이 있는지

had been translated into English.

쪽지를 보내 물어봤습니다.

And he said that nothing had been published,

but he did have an unpublished translation

of his novel "The Golden Horse."

He emailed this to me,

allowing me to become one of the first people ever

Morgan was by no means the only wordsmith

From Sweden to Palau,

writers and translators sent me self-published books

that hadn't been picked up by Anglophone publishers

or that were no longer available,

giving me privileged glimpses of some remarkable imaginary worlds.

I read, for example,

about the Southern African king Ngungunhane, who led the resistance

and about marriage rituals in a remote village

I met Kuwait's answer to Bridget Jones.

And I read about an orgy in a tree in Angola.

But perhaps the most amazing example

하지만 사람들이 제가 세계 각국의 책을 읽을 수 있도록 해준 일 중

of the lengths that people were prepared to go to

to help me read the world,

가장 놀라웠던 것은 제가 목표를 거의 다 달성할 무렵

came towards the end of my quest,

when I tried to get hold of a book from the tiny, Portuguese-speaking

포르투갈어를 쓰는 작은 아프리카 섬 국가인

African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe.

상투메 프린시페의 책을 구하려고 할 때였습니다.

Now, having spent several months trying everything I could think of to find

몇 달동안이나 영어로 번역된 상투메의 책을 찾으려고

a book that had been translated into English from the nation,

온갖 노력을 다 해 보았던 저로서는 유일하게 남은 선택지가

it seemed as though the only option left to me

was to see if I could get something translated for me from scratch.

Now, I was really dubious

whether anyone was going to want to help with this,

and give up their time for something like that.

But, within a week of me putting a call out on Twitter and Facebook

하지만 트위터와 페이스북에 포르투갈어를 쓰는 사람들에게

for Portuguese speakers,

도움을 요청한 지 일주일도 안 돼서

I had more people than I could involve in the project,

프로젝트에 다 참여시킬 수 없을 정도로 많은 사람들이 자원했습니다.

including Margaret Jull Costa, a leader in her field,

그 중에는 노벨상 수상자인 주제 사라마구의 작품도 번역했던

who has translated the work of Nobel Prize winner José Saramago.

With my nine volunteers in place,

I managed to find a book by a São Toméan author

상투메 작가가 쓴 책을 찾을 수 있었고

that I could buy enough copies of online.

Here's one of them.

And I sent a copy out to each of my volunteers.

They all took on a couple of short stories from this collection,

stuck to their word, sent their translations back to me,

and within six weeks, I had the entire book to read.

In that case, as I found so often during my year of reading the world,

my not knowing and being open about my limitations

이런 경우에는 저의 무지와 제 한계를 받아들이는 것이

had become a big opportunity.

When it came to São Tomé and Príncipe,

it was a chance not only to learn something new

and discover a new collection of stories,

발견하는 기회만이 아니라

but also to bring together a group of people

한 무리의 사람들을 모아서 공동으로 창의적인 시도를

and facilitate a joint creative endeavor.

My weakness had become the project's strength.

제 약점이 제 프로젝트의 강점이 되는 순간이었습니다.

The books I read that year opened my eyes to many things.

그 해에 제가 읽었던 책들은 많은 것에서 제 시야를 넓혀주었습니다.

As those who enjoy reading will know,

독서를 좋아하는 분은 모두 알겠지만

books have an extraordinary power to take you out of yourself

책에는 저를 자신으로부터 끌어내어 다른 누군가의 의식 속으로

and into someone else's mindset,

집어넣는 특별한 힘이 있습니다.

so that, for a while at least,

그래서 잠깐이나마 다른 시선으로 세상을 바라보게 됩니다.

you look at the world through different eyes.

That can be an uncomfortable experience,

그것은 불편한 경험이 될 수도 있습니다.

particularly if you're reading a book

특히 여러분이 읽고 계신 책이

from a culture that may have quite different values to your own.

여러분과는 상당히 다른 가치를 지닌 문화권에서 온 것이라면요.

But it can also be really enlightening.

Wrestling with unfamiliar ideas can help clarify your own thinking.

And it can also show up blind spots

그리고 세상을 바라보는 데

in the way you might have been looking at the world.

갖고 있던 맹점을 발견하게 해줍니다.

When I looked back at much of the English-language literature

I'd grown up with, for example,

I began to see how narrow a lot of it was,

compared to the richness that the world has to offer.

And as the pages turned,

something else started to happen, too.

Little by little,

that long list of countries that I'd started the year with, changed

from a rather dry, academic register of place names

into living, breathing entities.

Now, I don't want to suggest that it's at all possible

단순히 책 한 권을 읽는 것만으로도

to get a rounded picture of a country simply by reading one book.

한 국가에 대한 대략적인 그림을 그릴 수 있다는

오해는 드리고 싶지 않습니다.

But cumulatively, the stories I read that year

하지만 제가 그 해에 읽은 이야기들은 쌓이면서

made me more alive than ever before

그 어느 때보다도 우리가 사는 지구의 풍성함과 다양성과 복잡함에

to the richness, diversity and complexity of our remarkable planet.

저를 더 깨어있게 해주었습니다.

It was as though the world's stories

전세계의 이야기들과 제가 그것 들을 읽는 데 많은 도움을 주신 분들이

and the people who'd gone to such lengths to help me read them

had made it real to me.

이걸 제 현실로 가져와 주셨죠.

These days, when I look at my bookshelves

요즘에는 제 책장이나 E-Book책장을 보면

or consider the works on my e-reader,

they tell a rather different story.

책장이 다른 얘기를 합니다.

It's the story of the power books have to connect us

정치적, 지리적, 문화적, 사회적, 종교적 구분을 넘어서

across political, geographical, cultural, social, religious divides.

책이 우리를 연결시켜 줄 수 있는 힘에 대한 이야기이자

It's the tale of the potential human beings have to work together.

인간이 협동을 통해 갖는 잠재력에 관한 이야기입니다.

And, it's testament

또한 이것은 인터넷 덕분에

to the extraordinary times we live in, where, thanks to the Internet,

지구 반대편에 사는 한 번도 만난 적 없는 이들이

it's easier than ever before

자신의 이야기나 세계관과 책을 공유하는 것이 그 어느 때보다도 쉬워진

for a stranger to share a story, a worldview, a book

with someone she may never meet, on the other side of the planet.

우리가 살고 있는 이 놀라운 시대에 대한 반증입니다.

I hope it's a story I'm reading for many years to come.

앞으로도 제가 이런 이야기를 많이 읽기를 바랍니다.

And I hope many more people will join me.

그리고 더 많은 사람들이 저와 함께하길 바랍니다.

If we all read more widely, there'd be more incentive

우리가 모두 보다 넓은 독서를 한다면 출판사들은 더 많은 책을

for publishers to translate more books,

번역하도록 자극받을 것이고

and we would all be richer for that.
