When I was about eight years old,

I first heard about something called climate change or global warming.

Apparently, that was something humans had created by our way of living.

I was told to turn off the lights to save energy

I remember thinking that it was very strange

that humans, who are an animal species among others,

could be capable of changing the Earth's climate.

Because if we were, and if it was really happening,

정말로 우리가 기후를 변화시킬 수 있고 그런 일이 벌어졌다면

we wouldn't be talking about anything else.

이것에 관해서만 얘기하고 있을 거예요.

As soon as you'd turn on the TV, everything would be about that.

TV를 켜자마자 기후변화에 대한 얘기만 나올테고

Headlines, radio, newspapers,

헤드라인, 라디오, 신문에서

you would never read or hear about anything else,

다른 걸 읽거나 들을 수 없었을 겁니다.

as if there was a world war going on.

마치 세계대전이 발생한 것 처럼요.

But no one ever talked about it.

그러나 누구도 기후변화에 대해 애기하지 않아요.

If burning fossil fuels was so bad that it threatened our very existence,

화석연료를 사용하는 게 우리의 존재를 위협할 정도로 나쁜 거라면서

how could we just continue like before?

어째서 우리는 여전히 사용할 수 있는 거죠?

Why were there no restrictions?

왜 어떤 규제도 없나요?

왜 불법으로 만들지 않나요?

Why wasn't it made illegal?

To me, that did not add up.

저로서는 조금도 이해되지 않았어요.

It was too unreal.

정말 말도 안돼요.

So when I was 11, I became ill.

그래서 열한 살이 되었을 때, 그만 병에 걸렸습니다.

I fell into depression,

우울증에 걸렸고

I stopped talking,

말하기를 그만두고,

and I stopped eating.

먹는 것도 그만뒀습니다.

In two months, I lost about 10 kilos of weight.

Later on, I was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome,

OCD and selective mutism.

That basically means I only speak when I think it's necessary -

now is one of those moments.

For those of us who are on the spectrum,

almost everything is black or white.

We aren't very good at lying,

and we usually don't enjoy participating in this social game

that the rest of you seem so fond of.

I think in many ways that we autistic are the normal ones,

and the rest of the people are pretty strange,

especially when it comes to the sustainability crisis,

where everyone keeps saying climate change is an existential threat

and the most important issue of all,

and yet they just carry on like before.

I don't understand that,

저로선 이해가 안 갑니다.

because if the emissions have to stop,

then we must stop the emissions.

To me that is black or white.

제게는 흑백의 문제입니다.

There are no gray areas when it comes to survival.

Either we go on as a civilization or we don't.

We have to change.

Rich countries like Sweden need to start reducing emissions

스웨덴처럼 부유한 나라는 탄소 배출을 줄여야 합니다.

by at least 15 percent every year.

And that is so that we can stay below a two-degree warming target.

그렇게 해야만 지구의 한계치인 2℃ 아래를 유지할 수 있습니다.

Yet, as the IPCC have recently demonstrated,

aiming instead for 1.5 degrees Celsius

would significantly reduce the climate impacts.

But we can only imagine what that means for reducing emissions.

You would think the media and every one of our leaders

would be talking about nothing else,

but they never even mention it.

Nor does anyone ever mention

the greenhouse gases already locked in the system.

Nor that air pollution is hiding a warming

so that when we stop burning fossil fuels,

which is absolutely necessary to make it work on a global scale.

need to get down to zero emissions within 6 to 12 years,

And that is so that people in poorer countries

can have a chance to heighten their standard of living

삶의 질을 올릴 기회를 얻을 수 있습니다.

by building some of the infrastructure that we have already built,

도로, 학교, 병원

such as roads, schools, hospitals,

깨끗한 식수, 전기와 같은

clean drinking water, electricity, and so on.

인프라를 갖출 수 있습니다.

Because how can we expect countries like India or Nigeria

이미 모든 걸 갖추고 있는 우리가 그들을 손톱만큼도 신경쓰지 않고,

파리 협정에 실질적으로 참여하지 않는다면

to care about the climate crisis

if we who already have everything don't care even a second about it

어떻게 나이지리아나 인도같은 나라가

or our actual commitments to the Paris Agreement?

So, why are we not reducing our emissions?

그렇다면 우리는 왜 탄소 배출을 줄이지 않나요?

Why are they in fact still increasing?

왜 실제론 배출량이 여전히 증가하고만 있나요?

Are we knowingly causing a mass extinction?

정말 대멸종을 초래하고 있단 걸 자각하고 있긴 한가요?

Are we evil?

우리는 악인가요?

No, of course not.

물론 아닙니다.

People keep doing what they do

사람들은 그저 살아왔던대로 살 뿐입니다.

because the vast majority doesn't have a clue

about the actual consequences of our everyday life,

and they don't know that rapid change is required.

We all think we know, and we all think everybody knows,

but we don't.

Because how could we?

If there really was a crisis,

and if this crisis was caused by our emissions,

you would at least see some signs.

Not just flooded cities, tens of thousands of dead people,

and whole nations leveled to piles of torn down buildings.

You would see some restrictions.

There are no emergency meetings, no headlines, no breaking news.

No one is acting as if we were in a crisis.

Even most climate scientists or green politicians

심지어 대부분의 기후 과학자나 녹색 정치인도

keep on flying around the world, eating meat and dairy.

If I live to be 100, I will be alive in the year 2103.

When you think about the future today, you don't think beyond the year 2050.

By then, I will, in the best case, not even have lived half of my life.

그 때 즈음이면 전 기껏해야 제 인생의 절반도 살지 못했겠네요.

What happens next?

그 다음엔 어떤 일이 일어날까요?

The year 2078, I will celebrate my 75th birthday.

2078년에 저는 제 75번째 생일을 축하할 겁니다.

If I have children or grandchildren, maybe they will spend that day with me.

자녀나 손주가 있다면 저와 함께 생일을 보낼지도 모르겠어요.

Maybe they will ask me about you,

아마도 여러분에 대해 묻겠죠.

the people who were around, back in 2018.

옛날에 2018년에 살았던 사람들에 대해서요.

Maybe they will ask why you didn't do anything

여전히 조치를 취할 시간이 있음에도

while there still was time to act.

왜 아무것도 하지 않았냐고 물어볼지 모릅니다.

What we do or don't do right now will affect my entire life

우리가 지금 당장 하고, 안하고의 문제가 저의 평생에 영향을 끼칠 겁니다.

and the lives of my children and grandchildren.

그리고 제 자녀와 손주들의 생명에도요.

What we do or don't do right now,

지금 당장 하고, 하지 않은 일들은

me and my generation can't undo in the future.

저와 제 세대가 미래에서는 할 수 없는 일입니다.

So when school started in August of this year,

그래서 이번 8월에 개학했을 때,

I decided that this was enough.

저는 이 정도면 학교를 충분히 다녔다고 마음먹고

I set myself down on the ground outside the Swedish parliament.

스스로 스웨덴 국회 바깥 공터에 서 있기로 했습니다.

I school striked for the climate.

기후를 위해 등교를 거부했습니다.

Some people say that I should be in school instead.

몇몇은 저더러 학교에 있어야 한다고 말합니다.

Some people say that I should study to become a climate scientist

so that I can "solve the climate crisis."

그렇게 해서 "기후 위기를 해결"할 수 있다고요.

But the climate crisis has already been solved.

하지만 기후 위기는 이미 풀렸습니다.

We already have all the facts and solutions.

우리는 이미 관련된 모든 사실과 해결책을 가지고 있습니다.

All we have to do is to wake up and change.

해야할 것은 정신차리고 변화하는 것 뿐입니다.

And why should I be studying for a future that soon will be no more

어째서 제가 곧 있으면 사라질 미래를 위해 공부해야 하나요?

when no one is doing anything whatsoever to save that future?

아무도 미래를 구하기 위해 무엇 하나도 하지 않는걸요?

And what is the point of learning facts in the school system

그리고 학교 시스템에서 배운 것의 핵심은

when the most important facts

마찬가지의 학교 시스템 안에서 배운

given by the finest science of that same school system

첨단 과학이 밝힌 여러 중요한 사실들이

clearly means nothing to our politicians and our society.

우리 사회와 정치인에게 명백히 아무것도 아니란 사실이었어요.

Some people say that Sweden is just a small country,

몇몇은 스웨덴은 작은 나라여서

and that it doesn't matter what we do,

우리의 삶을 바꾸지 못한다고 말합니다.

but I think that if a few children can get headlines all over the world

하지만 아이들 몇명이 단지 학교를 몇 주 안 나오는 것으로

just by not coming to school for a few weeks,

뉴스 헤드라인을 차지할 수 있다면

imagine what we could all do together if you wanted to.

우리가 다 같이 참여한다면 무엇을 할 수 있을지 상상해보세요

Now we're almost at the end of my talk,

이제 제 얘기의 끝이 거의 다 와 갑니다.

and this is where people usually start talking about hope,

solar panels, wind power, circular economy, and so on,

but I'm not going to do that.

We've had 30 years of pep-talking and selling positive ideas.

And I'm sorry, but it doesn't work.

Because if it would have,

the emissions would have gone down by now.

They haven't.

And yes, we do need hope,

of course we do.

But the one thing we need more than hope is action.

Once we start to act, hope is everywhere.

So instead of looking for hope,

look for action.

Then, and only then, hope will come.

Today, we use 100 million barrels of oil every single day.

오늘날 우리는 석유 1조 6천억 리터를 하루 만에 다 사용합니다.

There are no politics to change that.

어떤 정치체도 이를 바꾸려하지 않아요.

There are no rules to keep that oil in the ground.

석유를 지하에 묶어두려는 법규는 없어요.

So we can't save the world by playing by the rules,

그러니 법을 따라서 세상을 구할 수는 없습니다.

because the rules have to be changed.

왜냐면 법이 바뀌어야 하기 때문입니다.

Everything needs to change --

모든 것이 바뀌어야 합니다.

and it has to start today.

그리고 오늘 시작해야 합니다.
