When I was about eight years old,

I first heard about something called climate change or global warming.

प्रथमच मी हवामान बदल किंवा जागतिक तापमानवाढ याविषयी ऐकलं.

Apparently, that was something humans had created by our way of living.

I was told to turn off the lights to save energy

and to recycle paper to save resources.

I remember thinking that it was very strange

that humans, who are an animal species among others,

could be capable of changing the Earth's climate.

Because if we were, and if it was really happening,

we wouldn't be talking about anything else.

As soon as you'd turn on the TV, everything would be about that.

Headlines, radio, newspapers,

you would never read or hear about anything else,

as if there was a world war going on.

जागतिक महायुद्ध सुरु असल्यासारखं.

But no one ever talked about it.

पण याविषयी कधीच कोणी काही बोललं नाही.

If burning fossil fuels was so bad that it threatened our very existence,

जर जीवाश्म इंधन वापरणं इतकं वाईट असेल, त्यामुळे आपलं अस्तित्व धोक्यात येत असेल,

how could we just continue like before?

तर आपण पूर्वीसारखेच कसे वागत राहू शकतो?

Why were there no restrictions?

निर्बंध का घातले गेले नाहीत?

Why wasn't it made illegal?

ते बेकायदेशीर का ठरवलं गेलं नाही?

To me, that did not add up.

मला काही याचा ताळमेळ लागला नाही.

It was too unreal.

यात फार खोटेपणा होता.

So when I was 11, I became ill.

यामुळे वयाच्या अकराव्या वर्षी मी आजारी पडले.

I fell into depression,

मला नैराश्य आलं.

I stopped talking,

and I stopped eating.

In two months, I lost about 10 kilos of weight.

Later on, I was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome,

OCD and selective mutism.

That basically means I only speak when I think it's necessary -

now is one of those moments.

For those of us who are on the spectrum,

almost everything is black or white.

We aren't very good at lying,

and we usually don't enjoy participating in this social game

that the rest of you seem so fond of.

सामाजिक खेळात भाग घेणं आवडत नाही.

I think in many ways that we autistic are the normal ones,

and the rest of the people are pretty strange,

especially when it comes to the sustainability crisis,

where everyone keeps saying climate change is an existential threat

and the most important issue of all,

and yet they just carry on like before.

I don't understand that,

because if the emissions have to stop,

then we must stop the emissions.

तर आपणच ते थांबवायला हवं.

To me that is black or white.

हे काळ्यापांढऱ्याइतकं स्पष्ट आहे.

There are no gray areas when it comes to survival.

जीवनमरणाच्या प्रश्नात अधलीमधली करडी छटा नसते.

Either we go on as a civilization or we don't.

आपली संस्कृती पुढे सुरु तरी राहील, किंवा संपेल तरी.

We have to change.

आपल्याला बदलावं लागेल.

Rich countries like Sweden need to start reducing emissions

स्वीडनसारख्या श्रीमंत देशांना दरवर्षी

by at least 15 percent every year.

निदान १५ टक्के उत्सर्जन कमी करण्याची सुरुवात करावी लागेल.

And that is so that we can stay below a two-degree warming target.

म्हणजे आपण जागतिक तापमान वाढ दोन अंशाखाली रोखू शकू.

Yet, as the IPCC have recently demonstrated,

aiming instead for 1.5 degrees Celsius

would significantly reduce the climate impacts.

But we can only imagine what that means for reducing emissions.

the greenhouse gases already locked in the system.

Nor that air pollution is hiding a warming

so that when we stop burning fossil fuels,

we already have an extra level of warming

perhaps as high as 0.5 to 1.1 degrees Celsius.

Furthermore does hardly anyone speak about the fact

that we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction,

with up to 200 species going extinct every single day,

That means that rich countries

such as roads, schools, hospitals,

clean drinking water, electricity, and so on.

Because how can we expect countries like India or Nigeria

to care about the climate crisis

if we who already have everything don't care even a second about it

or our actual commitments to the Paris Agreement?

So, why are we not reducing our emissions?

Why are they in fact still increasing?

Are we knowingly causing a mass extinction?

Are we evil?

No, of course not.

People keep doing what they do

लोक पूर्वीसारखंच सगळं करत राहतात,

because the vast majority doesn't have a clue

about the actual consequences of our everyday life,

काय परिणाम होतात, याची मुळीच कल्पना नसते.

and they don't know that rapid change is required.

आणि तात्काळ बदल घडायला हवा, हेही त्यांना माहित नसतं.

We all think we know, and we all think everybody knows,

सर्वांना ते माहित आहे, असं आपल्याला वाटतं,

but we don't.

पण प्रत्यक्षात माहित नसतं.

Because how could we?

कारण, ते आपल्याला समजणार तरी कसं?

If there really was a crisis,

जर हे संकट खरोखरच असतं,

and if this crisis was caused by our emissions,

आणि ते आपल्या उत्सर्जनामुळे आलेलं असतं,

you would at least see some signs.

तर निदान काहीतरी खुणा दिसल्या असत्या.

Not just flooded cities, tens of thousands of dead people,

नुसते शहरांतून आलेले पूर नव्हेत, तर लाखो प्रेतं,

and whole nations leveled to piles of torn down buildings.

उध्वस्त इमारतींच्या ढिगाऱ्यांखाली गाडले गेलेले देश.

You would see some restrictions.

काहीतरी निर्बंध दिसले असते.

But no.

पण ते दिसत नाहीत.

And no one talks about it.

There are no emergency meetings, no headlines, no breaking news.

No one is acting as if we were in a crisis.

आपल्यावर संकट आलं आहे, असं कोणाच्याही वागण्यातून दिसत नाही.

Even most climate scientists or green politicians

इतकंच काय, बरेचसे हवामान शास्त्रज्ञ, आणि पर्यावरणवादी राजकारणीसुद्धा

keep on flying around the world, eating meat and dairy.

जगभर विमानप्रवास करतात, मांस आणि दुग्धजन्य पदार्थ खातात.

If I live to be 100, I will be alive in the year 2103.

मी जर शंभर वर्षे जगले, तर २१०३ साली मी जिवंत असेन.

When you think about the future today, you don't think beyond the year 2050.

आज आपण जेव्हा भविष्याचा विचार करतो, तेव्हा तो २०५० च्या पुढे जाऊ शकत नाही.

By then, I will, in the best case, not even have lived half of my life.

What happens next?

The year 2078, I will celebrate my 75th birthday.

२०७८ साली माझी पंचाहत्तरी असेल.

If I have children or grandchildren, maybe they will spend that day with me.

मला मुलं, नातवंडं असलीच, तर कदाचित त्या दिवशी ती माझ्याजवळ असतील.

Maybe they will ask me about you,

कदाचित ते मला तुमच्याविषयी विचारतील. म्हणजे,

the people who were around, back in 2018.

Maybe they will ask why you didn't do anything

while there still was time to act.

What we do or don't do right now will affect my entire life

and the lives of my children and grandchildren.

What we do or don't do right now,

me and my generation can't undo in the future.

So when school started in August of this year,

I decided that this was enough.

so that I can "solve the climate crisis."

But the climate crisis has already been solved.

We already have all the facts and solutions.

सर्व माहिती आणि उपाय आपल्याजवळ आहेत.

All we have to do is to wake up and change.

फक्त आपण जागं व्हायला हवं, आणि बदलायला हवं.

And why should I be studying for a future that soon will be no more

आणि जो भविष्यकाळ लवकरच नष्ट होणार आहे, त्यासाठी मी शाळेत जाऊन अभ्यास का करू?

when no one is doing anything whatsoever to save that future?

कारण भविष्यकाळ वाचवण्यासाठी आज कोणीही काहीही करताना दिसत नाही.

And what is the point of learning facts in the school system

शाळेत जाऊन माहिती मिळवण्यात काय अर्थ आहे?

when the most important facts

कारण, याच शिक्षणपद्धतीतून

given by the finest science of that same school system

निर्माण झालेल्या उत्कृष्ठ विज्ञानाने पुरवलेली अत्यंत महत्त्वाची माहिती

clearly means nothing to our politicians and our society.

आपल्या राजकारण्यांना आणि समाजाला निरुपयोगी वाटते.

Some people say that Sweden is just a small country,

काही लोक म्हणतात, की स्वीडन हा एक छोटासा देश आहे.

and that it doesn't matter what we do,

आणि आपण काहीही केलं तरी काही फरक पडणार नाही.

but I think that if a few children can get headlines all over the world

पण मला वाटतं, की जर नुसती काही मुलं, काही आठवडे शाळेत न जाणं

just by not coming to school for a few weeks,

ही जगभर ठळक बातमी होऊ शकते, तर

imagine what we could all do together if you wanted to.

Now we're almost at the end of my talk,

आता माझं भाषण संपत आलं आहे.

and this is where people usually start talking about hope,

अशा वेळी वक्ते आशावाद, सौरशक्ती, पवन शक्ती,

solar panels, wind power, circular economy, and so on,

पुनर्वापरावर आधारित अर्थव्यवस्था अशा गोष्टींविषयी बोलू लागतात.

but I'm not going to do that.

पण मी तसं करणार नाही.

We've had 30 years of pep-talking and selling positive ideas.

तीस वर्षं आपण उत्साहवर्धक भाषणं देतो आहोत, सकारात्मक कल्पना विकतो आहोत.

And I'm sorry, but it doesn't work.

माफ करा, त्यातून काही निष्पन्न होत नाही.

Because if it would have,

कारण तसं झालं असतं,

the emissions would have gone down by now.

तर आतापर्यंत उत्सर्जन कमी झालं असतं.

They haven't.

तसं झालेलं नाही.

And yes, we do need hope,

आणि हो, आपल्याला आशावादी राहिलं पाहिजे.

of course we do.

अर्थात. आशा हवीच.

But the one thing we need more than hope is action.

पण आशेपेक्षाही जास्त गरज आहे ती कृतीची.

Once we start to act, hope is everywhere.

आपण कृतीला सुरुवात केली, की सर्वत्र आशा दिसेल.

So instead of looking for hope,

तेव्हा आशा शोधण्याऐवजी

look for action.

कृतीचा शोध घ्या.

Then, and only then, hope will come.

कृती केल्यामुळेच आशा निर्माण होणार आहे.

Today, we use 100 million barrels of oil every single day.

आज आपण दर दिवशी दहा कोटी बॅरल्स खनिज तेल वापरतो.

There are no politics to change that.

त्यात बदल घडवून आणणारी धोरणं अस्तित्वात नाहीत.

There are no rules to keep that oil in the ground.

ते तेल भूगर्भातच ठेवणारे नियम नाहीत.

So we can't save the world by playing by the rules,

नियम पाळून जगलो, तरीही आपण पृथ्वीचं रक्षण करू शकत नाही.

because the rules have to be changed.

कारण मुळात ते नियम बदलायला हवे आहेत.

Everything needs to change --

सर्वकाही बदलायला हवं, आणि

and it has to start today.

या बदलाची सुरुवात आजच व्हायला हवी.
