I'm a contract computer scientist by trade,

but I'm the founder of something called the Tinkering School.

It's a summer program which aims to help kids

So we build a lot of things,

and I do put power tools into the hands of second-graders.

they do come back bruised, scraped and bloody.

You know, we live in a world

that's subjected to ever more stringent child safety regulations.

There doesn't seem to be any limit on how crazy

child safety regulations can get.

We put suffocation warnings on every piece of plastic film

manufactured in the United States,

or for sale with an item in the United States.

We put warnings on coffee cups

to tell us that the contents may be hot.

And we seem to think that any item sharper than a golf ball is too sharp

for children under the age of 10.

So where does this trend stop?

When we round every corner and eliminate every sharp object,

every pokey bit in the world,

then the first time that kids come in contact with anything sharp,

they'll hurt themselves with it.

So, as the boundaries of what we determine as the safety zone

we cut off our children from valuable opportunities

to learn how to interact with the world around them.

So despite the provocative title,

this presentation is really about safety,

and about some simple things that we can do

to raise our kids to be creative,

confident and in control of the environment around them.

Thing number one: Play with fire.

첫 번째 - 불장난.

Learning to control one of the most elemental forces in nature

is a pivotal moment in any child's personal history.

Whether we remember it or not,

it's the first time we really get control

of one of these mysterious things.

These mysteries are only revealed

to those who get the opportunity to play with it.

So, playing with fire.

This is like one of the great things we ever discovered, fire.

From playing with it, they learn some basic principles about fire,

about intake, combustion, exhaust.

흡기, 연소, 배기와 같은 것들을 배웁니다

These are the three working elements of fire

불을 잘 다루기 위해서는

that you have to have for a good, controlled fire.

And you can think of the open-pit fire as a laboratory.

You don't know what they're going to learn from playing with it.

아이들이 불장난에서 무엇을 배울 것인지 모릅니다.

Let them fool around with it on their own terms and trust me,

they're going to learn things

that you can't get out of playing with Dora the Explorer toys.

Number two: Own a pocketknife.

두 번째 - 주머니칼을 갖게 해주세요.

Pocketknives are kind of drifting out of our cultural consciousness,

which I think is a terrible thing.

Your first pocketknife is like the first universal tool

that you're given.

You know, it's a spatula, it's a pry bar,

it's a screwdriver and it's a blade, yeah.

And in a lot of cultures they give knives --

These are Inuit children cutting whale blubber.

I first saw this in a Canadian Film Board film when I was 10,

and it left a lasting impression,

아이들이 칼을 가지고 노는 모습은 짙은 인상을 남겼죠.

to see babies playing with knives.

And it shows that kids can develop an extended sense of self

이것은 아이들이 어린나이에 공구를 통해서 더 깊은 자아 인식을

through a tool at a very young age.

계발할 수 있다는 걸 보여줍니다.

You lay down a couple of very simple rules --

always cut away from your body, keep the blade sharp, never force it --

항상 바깥으로 칼질하고, 칼날은 날카롭게, 무리한 힘을 가하지 말 것.

and these are things kids can understand and practice with.

아이들은 이런 것을 이해하고 연습할 수 있습니다.

And yeah, they're going to cut themselves.

I have some terrible scars on my legs from where I stabbed myself.

But you know, they're young. They heal fast.

Number three: Throw a spear.

세 번째 - 창을 던지게 하세요.

It turns out that our brains are actually wired for throwing things,

and like muscles, if you don't use parts of your brain,

they tend to atrophy over time.

But when you exercise them,

any given muscle adds strength to the whole system,

So practicing throwing things has been shown to stimulate

which have to do with visual acuity, 3D understanding,

so it helps develop their visualization skills and their predictive ability.

And throwing is a combination of analytical and physical skill,

so it's very good for that kind of whole-body training.

These kinds of target-based practices also help kids develop

attention and concentration skills,

so those are great.

Number [four]: Deconstruct appliances.

네 번째 - 가전제품 분해하기.

There is a world of interesting things inside your dishwasher.

식기세척기 안에는 흥미로운 것들이 가득합니다.

Next time you're about to throw out an appliance,

향후에 가전제품을 폐기할 때면, 그냥 내버리지 마세요.

don't throw it out.

Take it apart with your kid,

여러분의 아이와 같이 분해 하든지, 우리 학교에 보내주시면,

or send him to my school, and we'll take it apart with them.

Even if you don't know what the parts are,

무슨 부품이 있는지 모른다고 하더라도,

puzzling out what they might be for

is a really good practice for the kids

to get sort of the sense that they can take things apart,

and no matter how complex they are,

they can understand parts of them.

And that means that eventually, they can understand all of them.

It's a sense of knowability, that something is knowable.

So these black boxes that we live with and take for granted

are actually complex things made by other people,

and you can understand them.

Number five: Two-parter.

Break the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

There are laws beyond safety regulations

이것들은 안전 수칙을 넘어선 법들로서

that attempt to limit how we can interact with the things

우리가 어떻게 소유물과 상호작용 하는가를 제한하는 것입니다.

that we own -- in this case, digital media.

이 경우에는 디지털 미디어가 그 대상이죠.

It's a very simple exercise:

매우 간단한 실습으로서, 아이튠즈(ITunes)에서 노래를 구매하고, CD에 기록한 후에,

Buy a song on iTunes, write it to a CD,

then rip the CD to an MP3, and play it on your very same computer.

CD를 MP3로 리핑해서 바로 그 컴퓨터에서 재생하는 겁니다.

You've just broken a law.

방급 법을 위반했죠.

Technically, the RIAA could come and prosecute you.

기술적으로 RIAA(음반협회)가 와서 당신을 기소할 수 있어요.

It's an important lesson for kids to understand,

아이들이 무의식 중에 법을 위반할 수 있고

that some of these laws get broken by accident,

법을 해석해야 한다는 사실을

and that laws have to be interpreted.

이해하는 것은 중요한 학습입니다.

이것은 우리가 아이들과 자주 이야기하는 것들인데,

That's something we often talk about with the kids

when we're fooling around with things and breaking them open,

and taking them apart and using them for other things.

And also when we go out and drive a car.

Driving a car is a really empowering act for a young child,

so this is the alternate --

For those of you who aren't comfortable actually breaking the law,

여러분들 중에 법을 어기기 꺼려하시는 분들은

you can drive a car with your child.

아이와 같이 운전하시면 됩니다.

This is a great stage for a kid.

이때가 아이들에게는 최상의 시기입니다.

이런 일은 아이들이 공룡처럼

This happens about the same time

물건을 거머쥘 때 일어나는 것과 동일합니다.

that they get latched onto things like dinosaurs,

these big things in the outside world,

외부 세계에 있는 이 큰 것들을

that they're trying to get a grip on.

아이들이 잡으려고 노력하는 것이죠.

A car is a similar object, and they can get in a car and drive it.

자동차는 비슷한 물체로서, 안에 들어가 운전할 수 있습니다.

And that really gives them a handle on a world

그 체험은 마치 아이들이 자주 접할 수 없는 방법으로

in a way that they don't often have access to.

이 세상의 손잡이를 쥐어주는 것과 같죠.

And it's perfectly legal.

그러니까, 완벽하게 합법적인 것이죠.

Find a big empty lot, make sure there's nothing in it,

큰 공터를 찾아 아무것도 없음을 확인하고

and that it's on private property, and let them drive your car.

사유지임을 확인하신 후 운전하게 해보세요.

It's very safe actually.

사실 무척 안전 합니다.

And it's fun for the whole family.

또 온가족에게 재미 있는 일이지요.
