I wanted to just start by asking everyone a question:

How many of you are completely comfortable

with calling yourselves a leader?

I've asked that question all across the country,

and everywhere I ask it, no matter where,

물어볼 때마다

there's a huge portion of the audience that won't put up their hand.

아주 많은 사람들이 손을 들지 못했어요.

And I've come to realize that we have made leadership

생각하고 있다는 것을 깨닫게 되었어요,

into something bigger than us; something beyond us.

We've made it about changing the world.

We've taken this title of "leader"

그리고 우리는 이 지도자라는 자리를

and treat it as something that one day we're going to deserve.

언젠가는 되볼만한 가치가 있는 것이라고 여깁니다.

But to give it to ourselves right now

하지만 지금 그런 자리를 떠맡는다는 것은

means a level of arrogance or cockiness that we're not comfortable with.

약간 거만하거나 자만심을 가진다는 의미도 있어서 우리는 그런걸 불편해 하기도 하죠.

And I worry sometimes that we spend so much time

저는 가끔 누구도 하기 힘든

그리고 우리 생각에 확고하게 축하 받을만한

celebrating amazing things that hardly anybody can do,

that we've convinced ourselves those are the only things worth celebrating.

놀라운 것들을 축하하는데만

너무 많은 시간을 보내고 있는건 아닌가 싶어요.

We start to devalue the things we can do every day,

그리고 우리들이 일상적으로 할 수 있는 것들을 폄하하고

우리가 잠깐씩 진정으로 지도자가 되는 순간에도

We take moments where we truly are a leader

and we don't let ourselves take credit for it, or feel good about it.

그 공을 치하하지 않으며

자랑스럽게 여기지 않는 건 아닐까 합니다.

I've been lucky enough over the last 10 years

저는 운 좋게도 지난 십수년간

리더십을 재정의하는데

to work with amazing people who've helped me redefine leadership

같이 힘써준 멋진 사람들과 함께 일하게 되면서

그런 과정에 행복을 느꼈습니다.

in a way that I think has made me happier.

그리고 오늘 이 시간을 통해 여러분들과

With my short time today,

I want to share with you the one story that is probably most responsible

그런 재정의에 아마도 가장 큰 공헌을 했을 한 사례를 나누고자 합니다.

for that redefinition.

I went to a little school

저는 뉴브런즈윅(New Brunswick) 주 사크빌(Sackville)에 있는

called Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick.

마운트 앨리슨 대학교에 다녔어요.

학교에 다니던 마지막 날, 한 여자애가 제게 오더니

And on my last day there, a girl came up to me and said,

"나 너 처음 본 날 기억하고 있어" 라고 하더군요.

"I remember the first time I met you."

그리고는 4년 전에 일어났던 일에 대해 말해 줬어요.

And she told me a story that had happened four years earlier.

"입학식 전날 부모님과 호텔 방에 있었는데

She said, "On the day before I started university,

I was in the hotel room with my mom and dad,

난 진짜 겁에 질려서 대학교에 못 가겠다고

and I was so scared and so convinced that I couldn't do this,

갈 준비가 안됐다고 생각해서

that I wasn't ready for university, that I just burst into tears.

펑펑 울고 있었거든

My mom and dad were amazing.

근데 엄마랑 아빠가 정말 멋있었어.

They were like, "We know you're scared, but let's just go tomorrow,

'얘야, 네가 겁먹은 거 다 알고 있단다. 그래도 내일 한번 가보자꾸나.

첫 날에 가보고도 도저히 못하겠거든

go to the first day, and if at any point you feel as if you can't do this,

괜찮으니 우리에게 말해주렴.

that's fine; tell us, and we'll take you home.

집으로 데려가 줄테니 어떤 상황에서도 엄마 아빠는 너를 사랑해'라고 하셨어"

We love you no matter what.'"

그리고 나서는 "그래서 다음 날 학교에 가서

She says, "So I went the next day.

등록하려고 줄을 서 있었거든

I was in line for registration,

and I looked around and just knew I couldn't do it; I wasn't ready.

근데 주변을 둘러보니까 도저히 못하겠는거야.

마음도 준비가 안되어있었고 대학은 못 간다고 생각했었어"라고 말했어요.

I knew I had to quit.

I made that decision and as soon as I made it,

"결정을 내렸는데 그렇게 결심하자마자

믿기지 않는 평온한 느낌이 내 몸을 감싸더라.

an incredible feeling of peace came over me.

그리고 부모님께 가서 집으로 돌아가겠다고 말씀드렸어.

I turned to my mom and dad to tell them we needed to go home,

근데 바로 그때 네가 학생회관에서

and at that moment, you came out of the student union building

내 인생에서 본 모자 중에

가장 우스꽝스러운 걸 쓰고 나오는거야" (웃음)

wearing the stupidest hat I've ever seen in my life."

(Laughter)

"It was awesome.

"진짜 대박이었지

그리고 샤이너라마(Shinerama)라는 '낭포성 섬유증과 싸우는 학생 동아리'를

And you had a big sign promoting Shinerama," --

홍보하는 큰 간판도 가지고 있었잖아"

which is Students Fighting Cystic Fibrosis,

그건 제가 수년 동안 활동한 자선 단체에요.

a charity I've worked with for years --

"또 사탕이 가득 들어있는 바구니도 들고 있었고

"And you had a bucketful of lollipops.

그리고는 걸어와서 줄서서 기다리는 사람들한테

You were handing the lollipops out to people in line,

샤이너라마에 대해 이야기 하면서 사탕을 나눠줬어.

and talking about Shinerama.

All of the sudden, you got to me, and you just stopped.

갑자기 나한테 오더니 멈춰서서

그냥 쳐다만 보더라고 완전 소름돋은거 알아?"(웃음)

And you stared. It was creepy."

(Laughter)

This girl knows what I'm talking about.

여기 이 아가씨가 정확하게 제가 무슨 말을 하고 있는지 알아요. (웃음)

(Laughter)

"Then you looked at the guy next to me, smiled, reached into your bucket,

그 다음에는 내 옆에 있는 남자를 쳐다보고는

씨익 웃더니 바구니에서 사탕 하나를 꺼내서

그 남자한테 주면서

pulled out a lollipop, held it out to him and said,

'당신, 옆에 있는 아름다운 아가씨께 사탕을 주셔야겠어요' 라고 말했어"

'You need to give a lollipop to the beautiful woman next to you.'"

그 다음에 그녀는 제게 "내 인생에서 너만큼 빨리 누군가를 창피하게 만든 사람이 없었어.

She said, "I've never seen anyone get more embarrassed faster in my life.

He turned beet red, he wouldn't even look at me.

그 사람 얼굴이 홍당무처럼 빨개지더니 날 쳐다보지도 않았다고.

그냥 이렇게 들이 밀기만 했단 말이야"라고 하더군요. (웃음)

He just kind of held the lollipop out like this."

(Laughter)

"I felt so bad for this dude that I took the lollipop.

"난 그 사람이 너무 안됐어서 사탕을 받았는데

As soon as I did, you got this incredibly severe look on your face,

받자마자 네 얼굴이 완전 심각해지더니

우리 부모님을 쳐다보고 이렇게 말하더라

looked at my mom and dad and said, 'Look at that! Look at that!

'보셨어요? 보셨어요?

집에서 나온 첫 날인데, 벌써 모르는 사람한테

First day away from home,

and already she's taking candy from a stranger?'"

사탕을 받고 있잖아요?!'" (웃음)

(Laughter)

"모든 사람들이 정신줄을 놓더라.

She said, "Everybody lost it.

Twenty feet in every direction, everyone started to howl.

사방에 있던 사람들이 빵터졌잖아.

I know this is cheesy, and I don't know why I'm telling you this,

이게 좀 싸구려 같기도 하고 내가 너한테 왜 이런 말을 하는지는 모르겠지만

전부 다 웃고 있던 그때,

but in that moment when everyone was laughing, I knew I shouldn't quit.

난 그만두면 안된다고 생각했어

I knew I was where I was supposed to be; I knew I was home.

내가 있어야할 곳에 있다는 걸 깨달았고

집처럼 편안하더라고 그리고 그날 이후로 4년 동안

And I haven't spoken to you once in the four years since that day.

너랑 말도 안 섞었지만

네가 떠난다는 소식은 들었어.

But I heard that you were leaving, and I had to come and tell you

그래서 네가 내 인생에서 엄청나게 중요한 사람이었음을 말해주고 싶었어.

you've been an incredibly important person in my life.

보고 싶을거야. 행운을 빌어"라고 하더군요.

I'm going to miss you. Good luck."

And she walks away, and I'm flattened.

그러고는 걸어갔어요. 저는 완전 멍해졌죠.

She gets six feet away, turns around, smiles and goes,

몇 발자국 가다가 돌아서서 미소를 지으며

"You should probably know this, too:

"아, 이것도 알아야 할 것 같아서

나 4년이 지난 지금도 그 남자랑 사귀고 있어" (웃음)

I'm still dating that guy, four years later."

(Laughter)

A year and a half after I moved to Toronto,

토론토로 이사온지 1년 반이 지나서

I got an invitation to their wedding.

저는 그 둘의 결혼식에 초대 받았어요.

(Laughter)

Here's the kicker: I don't remember that.

반전이 있는데요. 제 기억엔 없다는 거예요.

I have no recollection of that moment.

그 순간에 대한 기억이 전혀 없어요.

I've searched my memory banks,

그 사건이 웃기기도 하고 기억해야 되는 건데

because that is funny and I should remember doing it and I don't.

제 기억 창고를 뒤져봐도 없는 거예요.

제 인생에서 타인의 삶에 아마도 가장 큰 영향을 끼쳤던 사건이라고 생각하니

That was such an eye-opening, transformative moment for me,

눈이 휘둥그래지고 제 삶을 바꿀만한 순간이었죠.

to think that maybe the biggest impact I'd ever had on anyone's life,

한 여자가 모르는 사람에게 걸어오더니

a moment that had a woman walk up to a stranger four years later and say,

"당신은 제 인생에 있어서

굉장히 중요한 사람이었어요"라고 했는데

"You've been an important person in my life,"

정작 저는 그때가 생각이 안 나더라고요.

was a moment that I didn't even remember.

여기서 다른 사람이 말이나 행동으로

How many of you guys have a lollipop moment,

여러분의 삶을 송두리채 바꿔놓은 경험(a lollipop moment)이

a moment where someone said or did something

있으신 분 계신가요?

that you feel fundamentally made your life better?

그럼 그 분이 그랬다고 말씀드려보신 분은요?

All right. How many of you have told that person they did it?

See, why not?

보셨죠? 왜 없겠어요? 365일 동안 죽지만 않으면

We celebrate birthdays,

where all you have to do is not die for 365 days --

돌아오는 생일도 축하하잖아요. (웃음)

(Laughter)

Yet we let people who have made our lives better

근데도 우리는 더 나은 삶을 살게 만들어준 사람이

그런 사실조차 모르고 살게 하고 있어요

walk around without knowing it.

Every single one of you has been the catalyst

여러분 모두가, 모든 사람이

롤리팝 모먼트의 희열을 느껴보셨을 거예요.

for a lollipop moment.

You've made someone's life better by something you said or did.

여러분들은 말이나 행동으로써

타인의 삶을 더 좋게 만들어주셨겠죠. 만약에 그렇지 않다고 생각하시면

If you think you haven't,

think of all the hands that didn't go up when I asked.

제가 그 질문을 했을 때 손을 들지 않았던 사람들을 생각해 보세요

그 분들은 단지 그런 말을 듣지 못했던 거예요.

You're just one of the people who hasn't been told.

하지만 본인들에게 그렇게 강력한 힘이 있다고 생각하는게 무섭기도 할거에요.

It's scary to think of ourselves as that powerful,

frightening to think we can matter that much to other people.

우리가 다른 사람들에게 그렇게까지나 중요하다고 여겨지는게

무섭기도 할거에요 왜냐하면 리더십이 우리보다 크다고 여기는 한,

As long as we make leadership something bigger than us,

as long as we keep leadership beyond us

리더십을 우리의 능력 밖에 두는 한,

and make it about changing the world,

그리고 리더십이 세상을 바꾸는 것이라고만 생각하는 한,

우리는 그것을 일상생활에서 우리 자신으로부터나

we give ourselves an excuse not to expect it every day,

from ourselves and from each other.

Marianne Williamson said, "Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate.

[It] is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light and not our darkness that frightens us."

My call to action today is that we need to get over our fear

서로의 삶에 우리가 놀랍도록 강력하다는 것에

of how extraordinarily powerful we can be in each other's lives.

겁먹지 말아야해요.

이보다 더 나아가기 위해서는 이를 극복해야 해요.

We need to get over it so we can move beyond it,

and our little brothers and sisters and one day our kids --

그리고 우리 동생들, 그리고 언젠가는 우리의 아이들이

or our kids right now -- can watch and start to value

돈이나 권력, 지위, 그리고 영향력보다

the impact we can have on each other's lives,

우리가 서로의 삶에 더 큰 영향을 끼친다는 것을 알고

거기에 가치를 두기 시작하도록 말이죠

more than money and power and titles and influence.

We need to redefine leadership as being about lollipop moments --

우리는 리더쉽을 롤리팝 모먼트로 재정의할 필요가 있어요

how many of them we create, how many we acknowledge,

얼마나 많이 만드는지, 얼마나 많이 인지하는지

how many of them we pay forward and how many we say thank you for.

얼마나 많이 베풀고, 고맙다고 말하는지로요.

Because we've made leadership about changing the world,

왜냐하면 세상을 바꾸는 게 지도력이라는데 세상이란 것이 없기 때문이에요.

and there is no world.

오직 리더십에 대한 60억 개의 이해심만이 있을 뿐이에요.

There's only six billion understandings of it.

And if you change one person's understanding of it,

그리고 만약 여러분이 리더십에 대한 인식과

그들이 할 수 있는 일에 대한 이해,

understanding of what they're capable of,

그리고 다른 사람들이 그들을 얼마나 생각하는지,

understanding of how much people care about them,

이 세상에서 변화에 있어서 그들이 얼마나 강력한 역할을 할 수 있는지에 대한

understanding of how powerful an agent for change

생각을 바꾼다면, 세상 전체를 바꾼 것과 마찬가지에요.

they can be in this world,

you've changed the whole thing.

리더십을 이렇게 생각하도록 바꾸고

And if we can understand leadership like that,

I think if we can redefine leadership like that,

이런 식으로 재정의를 할 수 있다면

전 모든 것을 바꿀 수 있다고 생각해요.

I think we can change everything.

And it's a simple idea, but I don't think it's a small one.

간단한 생각이지만 사소하다고 여기지는 마세요.
