When I first heard this theme,

I thought, well, embracing otherness

他者の受容とは

is embracing myself.

自己を受け入れることだと思いました

And the journey to that place

それを理解し 受け入れるところまで

of understanding and acceptance

たどり着くのは

has been an interesting one for me,

わたしには興味深い道のりでした

and it's given me an insight

そこからもたらされた自己という

into the whole notion of self,

考え全体に対する理解は

which I think is worth sharing with you today.

皆さんと共有するに値すると思います

We each have a self,

誰もがもつ自己とは

but I don't think that we're born with one.

生まれもったものではないと思います

You know how newborn babies

生まれたての赤ちゃんは

believe they're part of everything;

すべてのものの一部だと信じていて

they're not separate?

切り離されていません

Well that fundamental sense of oneness

同一性とも言えるその根本的な感覚は

is lost on us very quickly.

すぐに失われ

It's like that initial stage is over --

第一段階は終了します

oneness: infancy,

同一性の感覚は幼年時代の

unformed, primitive.

未成熟で原始的なものです

It's no longer valid or real.

それは真のものではなくなり 別れていることが

What is real is separateness,

真のものとなります

and at some point in early babyhood,

幼児期の初めに

the idea of self

自己という考えが

starts to form.

形成され始めます

Our little portion of oneness is given a name,

その小さな同一性には名前がつけられ

is told all kinds of things about itself,

あらゆることを教えられます

and these details,

それら詳細や

opinions and ideas

意見や考えは

become facts,

事実となり

which go towards building ourselves,

自己やアイデンティティを

our identity.

形成していきます

And that self becomes the vehicle

その自己が 社会的世界を

for navigating our social world.

渡り歩くための手段になります

But the self is a projection

でも その自己は他人の主観が投影されたものに基づく

based on other people's projections.

主観の投影です

Is it who we really are?

それは本当のわたしたちの姿でしょうか

Or who we really want to be, or should be?

それとも あこがれる姿？ あるべき姿？

So this whole interaction

自己とアイデンティティの

with self and identity

関わり合いは わたしが育つ中で

was a very difficult one for me growing up.

とても厄介なものでした

The self that I attempted to take out into the world

わたしが世に示そうとした自己は

was rejected over and over again.

幾度となく拒否されました

And my panic

かみ合う自己をもたないことから

at not having a self that fit,

起きるパニックと

and the confusion that came

拒否される自己から生まれる

from my self being rejected,

困惑は

created anxiety, shame

不安や恥や絶望を生みだしました

and hopelessness,

それは長い間

which kind of defined me for a long time.

わたしを明確に示しているようなものでした

But in retrospect,

でも振り返ってみると

the destruction of my self was so repetitive

自己が幾度となく打ちのめされる為に

that I started to see a pattern.

あるパターンが見え始めました

The self changed,

自己は変わり

got affected, broken, destroyed,

影響され 壊される

but another one would evolve --

でも また別の自己が現れる

sometimes stronger,

時に強く

sometimes hateful,

時に憎たらしく

sometimes not wanting to be there at all.

時に嫌々ながら

The self was not constant.

いつも違った自己が現れました

And how many times

何度 わたしの自己は

would my self have to die

息絶えなくてはいけなかったのでしょう

before I realized

そもそも そこには

that it was never alive in the first place?

生きた自己などなかったのに

I grew up on the coast of England

わたしは70年代に

in the '70s.

英国の海岸沿いの街で育ちました

My dad is white from Cornwall,

父はコーンウォール出身の白人で

and my mom is black from Zimbabwe.

母はジンバブエ出身の黒人です

Even the idea of us as a family

わたしたちが家族であると

was challenging to most people.

考えることですら 周囲には難しいことでした

But nature had its wicked way,

でも 自然のいたずらで

and brown babies were born.

褐色の肌の赤ちゃんが生まれました

But from about the age of five,

でも５歳の頃から

I was aware that I didn't fit.

I was the black atheist kid

修道女が運営する白人ばかりのカトリック校に通うわたしは

in the all-white Catholic school run by nuns.

黒人で 神様はいないと思っていました

I was an anomaly,

つまり わたしは異例だったのです

and my self was rooting around for definition

わたしの自己は その状況を把握しようとし

and trying to plug in.

つながりを求めました

Because the self likes to fit,

周囲に調和し

to see itself replicated,

似たものを見つけ

to belong.

属する場が欲しいからです

That confirms its existence

すると その存在や重要性が

and its importance.

認められるのです

And it is important.

それはとても大切な

It has an extremely important function.

役割をもっています

Without it, we literally can't interface with others.

それがなくては 他者とつながりをもてません

We can't hatch plans

計画を立てることもできなければ

and climb that stairway of popularity,

人気や成功への階段を

of success.

登ることもできません

But my skin color wasn't right.

でも わたしの肌の色は相応しくなく

My hair wasn't right.

髪の毛も相応しくなく

My history wasn't right.

わたしの経歴も相応しくなく

My self became defined

わたしの自己は

by otherness,

他者として特徴づけられるようになりました

which meant that, in that social world,

その社会的世界では

I didn't really exist.

わたしが存在しないことを意味し

And I was "other" before being anything else --

わたしは少女になる前でさえ

even before being a girl.

別の人間になっていました

I was a noticeable nobody.

目立つのに 取るに足らない人間だったのです

Another world was opening up

その頃 別の世界が

around this time:

広がりつつありました

performance and dancing.

それは演技とダンスです

That nagging dread of self-hood

しつこいほどに感じていた自己の恐怖は

didn't exist when I was dancing.

ダンスをするときに感じることはありませんでした

I'd literally lose myself.

夢中になって踊りました

And I was a really good dancer.

ダンスは上手かったのです

I would put

感情的な表現は

all my emotional expression

すべてダンスで

into my dancing.

表現しました

I could be in the movement

ダンスの中では

in a way that I wasn't able to be

実生活ではなれない自分に

in my real life, in myself.

なれたのです

And at 16,

16歳のとき

I stumbled across another opportunity,

別の機会に巡り合いました

and I earned my first acting role in a film.

初めて映画に出演できることになりました

I can hardly find the words

演技をしているときに感じる

to describe the peace I felt

心の平和は

when I was acting.

言葉では表せません

My dysfunctional self

機能していない自己が

could actually plug in

別の自己に

to another self, not my own,

つながることができたのです

and it felt so good.

とても嬉しかったです

It was the first time that I existed

きちんと機能している自己に

inside a fully-functioning self --

自分が存在できた初めてのときでした

one that I controlled,

それは自らコントロールし

that I steered,

方向性を決め

that I gave life to.

命を吹き込んだ自己です

But the shooting day would end,

でも撮影日が終われば

and I'd return

わたしはまた

to my gnarly, awkward self.

ぎこちない自己へと戻るのでした

By 19,

19歳には 一人前の

I was a fully-fledged movie actor,

映画女優になっていましたが

but still searching for definition.

それでも位置づけを模索していました

I applied to read anthropology

わたしは大学で

at university.

人類学を学ぶことにしました

Dr. Phyllis Lee gave me my interview,

フィリス・リー博士との面接のときです

and she asked me, "How would you define race?"

“人種の定義って？” と尋ねられました

Well, I thought I had the answer to that one,

わかっているつもりで

and I said, "Skin color."

“肌の色です” と答えました

"So biology, genetics?" she said.

“遺伝的特徴？” と博士は言いました

"Because, Thandie, that's not accurate.

“それは間違っているわ

Because there's actually more genetic difference

between a black Kenyan

and a black Ugandan

than there is between a black Kenyan

and, say, a white Norwegian.

Because we all stem from Africa.

So in Africa,

there's been more time

to create genetic diversity."

In other words,

race has no basis

in biological or scientific fact.

科学的事実にも根拠はないのです

On the one hand, result.

答えは得られました

Right?

その反面

On the other hand, my definition of self

わたしの自己の定義は

just lost a huge chunk of its credibility.

大きく信憑性を失くしてしまったのです

But what was credible,

でも 信頼できたものや

what is biological and scientific fact,

生物学にも科学的にも事実であるのは

is that we all stem from Africa --

誰でもさかのぼるとアフリカにたどりつくことです

in fact, from a woman called Mitochondrial Eve

実際に16万年前に生きていた

who lived 160,000 years ago.

ミトコンドリア・イヴという女性にたどりつきます

And race is an illegitimate concept

人種とは 人間がつくりだした

which our selves have created

非論理的な概念で

based on fear and ignorance.

そのもとにあるのは 恐怖と無知なのです

Strangely, these revelations

不思議なことに これがわかっても

didn't cure my low self-esteem,

他者であると感じ続けていたわたしの自尊心の低さが

that feeling of otherness.

治ることはありませんでした

My desire to disappear

姿を消したいと願う望みは

was still very powerful.

とても強かったのです

I had a degree from Cambridge;

ケンブリッジ大学を卒業し

I had a thriving career,

女優として売れていたのに

but my self was a car crash,

自己は悲惨なものでした

and I wound up with bulimia

わたしは過食症になり

and on a therapist's couch.

セラピストの世話になっていました

And of course I did.

こうなったのも無理はありません

I still believed

自分がもちあわせた自己が

my self was all I was.

わたしのすべてだと信じ切っていました

I still valued self-worth

自分の価値は 他の何よりも

above all other worth,

価値があると思っていました

and what was there to suggest otherwise?

他にどう考えられたというのでしょう？

We've created entire value systems

わたしたちは 自己価値を支持する

and a physical reality

価値システムや

to support the worth of self.

物理的現実をつくりあげてきたのです

Look at the industry for self-image

自己像のためにつくられた産業や

and the jobs it creates,

そこから生まれる仕事の数々や

the revenue it turns over.

収益を考えてください

We'd be right in assuming

自己は生きているものと

that the self is an actual living thing.

推測しても間違いないでしょう

But it's not. It's a projection

でも それは投影されたもので

which our clever brains create

人間の賢い脳が

in order to cheat ourselves

我々を死の現実から

from the reality of death.

欺くためにつくり上げるものです

But there is something

しかし自己に

that can give the self

究極で無限のつながりを

ultimate and infinite connection --

与えるものがあります

and that thing is oneness,

それは 同一性です

our essence.

わたしたちの本質です

The self's struggle

確実性と定義を

for authenticity and definition

自己が求めるようともがくのも

will never end

つくりあげる主 つまり

unless it's connected to its creator --

あなたやわたしとつながりを見せなければ

to you and to me.

決してなくなることはありません

And that can happen with awareness --

それは気づきで起こります

awareness of the reality of oneness

同一性の現実 そして自己の投影に

and the projection of self-hood.

気づくことです

For a start, we can think about

まず 自己を失うときを

all the times when we do lose ourselves.

考えてみるといいでしょう

It happens when I dance,

わたしはダンスをするとき

when I'm acting.

演技をするときに それは起こります

I'm earthed in my essence,

わたしは本質の中へと入り込み

and my self is suspended.

自己は宙に浮くのです

In those moments,

そのようなとき

I'm connected to everything --

わたしはすべてとつながります

the ground, the air,

土や空気や音

the sounds, the energy from the audience.

観客のエネルギー

All my senses are alert and alive

わたしの感覚すべては 研ぎ澄まされます

in much the same way as an infant might feel --

それは幼児が同一性の感覚を

that feeling of oneness.

感じるのと似ています

And when I'm acting a role,

わたしは演技をするとき

I inhabit another self,

別の自己に宿り

and I give it life for awhile,

しばらく命を授けます

because when the self is suspended

なぜなら 自己が宙に浮くと

so is divisiveness

分裂性や判断力も

and judgment.

宙に浮くからです

And I've played everything

今まで演じた役は様々で

from a vengeful ghost in the time of slavery

奴隷制時代の執念深い幽霊から

to Secretary of State in 2004.

And no matter how other

他の自己が

these selves might be,

どんなものであっても

they're all related in me.

共感できるものがありました

And I honestly believe

わたしが本当に信じてやまないのは

the key to my success as an actor

女優業で成功できたり

and my progress as a person

人として進歩できたのは

has been the very lack of self

自己の欠落によって

that used to make me feel

不安な気持ちになったり

so anxious and insecure.

自信がなかったことだと思います

I always wondered

わたしはいつも

why I could feel others' pain so deeply,

なぜ他人の痛みを理解出来たり

why I could recognize

名もなき人間に共感できるのかと

the somebody in the nobody.

不思議に感じていたのですが

It's because I didn't have a self to get in the way.

それは わたしには邪魔する自己がなかったからなのです

I thought I lacked substance,

わたしには中身がないのかと思いました

and the fact that I could feel others'

他人を理解できるのは

meant that I had nothing of myself to feel.

自分に何も感じるものがないことを意味しているのかと思いました

The thing that was a source of shame

恥ずかしさの原因だったものは

was actually a source of enlightenment.

実は気づきの素でした

And when I realized

そして 自己が投影であり

and really understood

役割をもっていることに気づき

that my self is a projection and that it has a function,

理解したときに

a funny thing happened.

おもしろい事が起きました

I stopped giving it so much authority.

自己にコントロールさせることをやめ

I give it its due.

すべきことはさせました

I take it to therapy.

セラピーにも連れて行き

I've become very familiar

そのきちんとしない行動を

with its dysfunctional behavior.

知り尽くしました

But I'm not ashamed of my self.

でも 自分を恥じてはいません

In fact, I respect my self

むしろ自己と その役目を

and its function.

尊敬しています

And over time and with practice,

時間と練習を重ねることで

I've tried to live

もっと自らの本質で

more and more from my essence.

生きようと努力しました

And if you can do that,

皆さんも そうできれば

incredible things happen.

驚くべきことが起きます

I was in Congo in February,

わたしは２月にコンゴにいました

dancing and celebrating

地元の女性たちと

with women who've survived

踊ったりお祝いをしたのです

the destruction of their selves

彼らは想像もできないやり方で

in literally unthinkable ways --

自己を破壊された女性たちです

destroyed because other brutalized, psychopathic selves

残虐で狂った人たちが

all over that beautiful land

うつくしき土地の至る所で

are fueling our selves' addiction

iPodやiPadや宝飾品などをほしがる

to iPods, Pads, and bling,

わたしたちの欲をあおっているからです

which further disconnect ourselves

それは彼らの痛みや

from ever feeling their pain,

苦しみや

their suffering,

死を さらにわたしたちから

their death.

引き離すのです

Because, hey,

なぜなら だれもが

if we're all living in ourselves

自己の中で暮らし

and mistaking it for life,

それを人生だと捉え違えると

then we're devaluing

人生の価値を下げ

and desensitizing life.

無感覚にしているのです

And in that disconnected state,

つながりのない状態にいると

yeah, we can build factory farms with no windows,

窓のない工場をつくりだし

destroy marine life

海洋生物を全滅させ

and use rape as a weapon of war.

レイプを兵器として使えるのです

So here's a note to self:

自己への覚書を残しましょう

The cracks have started to show

わたしたちが作り上げた世界には

in our constructed world,

亀裂が見え始めていて

and oceans will continue

その亀裂には波が押し寄せ

to surge through the cracks,

大量に そして勢いよく

and oil and blood,

油が流れ込み

rivers of it.

血が流れ込んでいます

Crucially, we haven't been figuring out

決定的なのは私たちは

how to live in oneness

地球や命あるものと どう調和して暮らせるか

with the Earth and every other living thing.

まだわからずにいます

We've just been insanely trying to figure out

気違いじみたように 何十億人もの他者と

how to live with each other -- billions of each other.

共存できるか答えを出そうとしてきたのです

Only we're not living with each other;

でも そこで暮らすのは

our crazy selves are living with each other

狂った自己で

and perpetuating an epidemic

引き離しの蔓延を

of disconnection.

永続させているのです

Let's live with each other

皆と共に生きましょう

and take it a breath at a time.

そして 一呼吸ずつ進めましょう

If we can get under that heavy self,

もし 重い自己の下へと潜り込み

light a torch of awareness,

気づきの光をともし

and find our essence,

わたしたちの本質や

our connection to the infinite

命あるいかなるものと

and every other living thing.

永遠のつながりを見つけたら…

We knew it from the day we were born.

誕生したときから わかっていることです

Let's not be freaked out

何もないことには

by our bountiful nothingness.

恐れないことにしましょう

It's more a reality

それはつくりあげられたものよりも

than the ones our selves have created.

現実味があるのです

Imagine what kind of existence we can have

もしも 必ず訪れる自己の死をたたえ

if we honor inevitable death of self,

人生がもたらす恩恵を感謝し

appreciate the privilege of life

先行きに目を見張れば

and marvel at what comes next.

どんな存在を手に入れられるか想像してください

Simple awareness is where it begins.

簡単な気づきが 始まりなのです
