When I was nine years old,

my mom asked me what I would want my house to look like,

and I drew this fairy mushroom.

And then she actually built it.

I don't think I realized this was so unusual at the time,

and maybe I still haven't,

because I'm still designing houses.

This is a six-story bespoke home on the island of Bali.

It's built almost entirely from bamboo.

The living room overlooks the valley from the fourth floor.

４階のリビングからは 谷間が一望でき

You enter the house by a bridge.

橋を渡って 家に入ります

It can get hot in the tropics,

熱帯の暑さを しのぐため

so we make big curving roofs to catch the breezes.

大きくカーブした屋根にし 風を取り入れています

But some rooms have tall windows to keep the air conditioning in

背の高い窓を設け 自然の空調をきかせつつ

and the bugs out.

虫が入らないようにした 部屋もあります

This room we left open.

こちらは 開放的な部屋に

We made an air-conditioned, tented bed.

空気の流れる 天幕型の ベッドを用意しました

And one client wanted a TV room in the corner of her living room.

リビングの角にテレビ部屋がほしい というクライアント

Boxing off an area with tall walls just didn't feel right,

高い壁で囲うのは しっくり来なかったので

so instead, we made this giant woven pod.

このように 巨大な繭（まゆ）型の 部屋を作りました

Now, we do have all the necessary luxuries, like bathrooms.

必要な贅沢品もあります 例えば お手洗い

This one is a basket in the corner of the living room,

こちらは リビングの隅にある かご型のお手洗いです

and I've got tell you, some people actually hesitate to use it.

言っておきますと 使うのに抵抗があるかもしれません

We have not quite figured out our acoustic insulation.

防音が まだ十分ではないんです

(Laughter)

So there are lots of things that we're still working on,

but one thing I have learned

is that bamboo will treat you well if you use it right.

うまく使えば 竹はそれに応えてくれることです

It's actually a wild grass.

竹は 野生のイネ科の植物です

It grows on otherwise unproductive land --

深い峡谷や山腹など 耕作に向かない土地でも育ちます

deep ravines, mountainsides.

It lives off of rainwater, spring water, sunlight,

and of the 1,450 species of bamboo that grow across the world,

we use just seven of them.

That's my dad.

He's the one who got me building with bamboo,

and he is standing in a clump

父は 竹の群生のなかにいますが

of Dendrocalamus asper niger that he planted just seven years ago.

７年前に植えた デンドロカラムスという巨大竹です

Each year, it sends up a new generation of shoots.

毎年 新しい芽を出します

That shoot, we watched it grow a meter in three days just last week,

先週 その若竹が３日間で１メートル 成長したのを目の当たりにしたところです

so we're talking about sustainable timber in three years.

竹は ３年で建築資材となる 持続可能性を備えた材料なのです

Now, we harvest from hundreds of family-owned clumps.

私たちは 家族で保有する 数百の群生から竹を採っています

Betung, as we call it, it's really long,

「べトン」と呼ぶ こちらの竹はとても長く

up to 18 meters of usable length.

最長18mの建築材となります

Try getting that truck down the mountain.

トラックで竹を麓まで 運ぼうとしているところです

And it's strong: it has the tensile strength of steel,

竹は とても強く 鉄のように しなり

the compressive strength of concrete.

コンクリートのような 圧縮力があります

Slam four tons straight down on a pole,

竹の棹（さお）は １本で４トンの重さに

and it can take it.

耐えられるほどです

Because it's hollow, it's lightweight,

中が空洞で 非常に軽く

light enough to be lifted by just a few men,

男性数人で持ち上げられるほどです

or, apparently, one woman.

もちろん女性一人でも大丈夫

(Laughter) (Applause)

And when my father built Green School in Bali,

父がバリ島に グリーン・スクールを建てたとき

he chose bamboo for all of the buildings on campus,

キャンパス内の建物は すべて竹で作りました

because he saw it as a promise.

父なりの「約束」だったのです

It's a promise to the kids.

子どもたちへの「約束」です

It's one sustainable material that they will not run out of.

持続可能な材料で なくなることのない 竹に思いをこめたのです

And when I first saw these structures under construction about six years ago,

６年前に建築中の建物を 初めて見たとき

I just thought, this makes perfect sense.

まさに理にかなったものだ と思いました

It is growing all around us.

竹はそこら中に生えています

It's strong. It's elegant.

強くてエレガントでもあります

It's earthquake-resistant.

地震にも耐性があります

Why hasn't this happened sooner, and what can we do with it next?

なぜもっと早くしなかったのか― 次は何ができるだろうと考え

So along with some of the original builders of Green School,

グリーン・スクール建設に 初期から関わったメンバー数名と

I founded Ibuku.

「IBUKU（イブク）」を設立しました

Ibu means "mother," and ku means "mine," so it represents my Mother Earth,

IBUは「母」 KUは「私の」という意味で 「母なる大地」を表わしています

and at Ibuku, we are a team of artisans, architects and designers,

私たち IBUKUは 職人､建築家､デザイナーのチームで

and what we're doing together is creating a new way of building.

新しい建築のあり方を 創造しています

Over the past five years together,

この５年あまり 共に活動を続け

we have built over 50 unique structures, most of them in Bali.

50以上のユニークな建物を誕生させました ほとんどがバリ島にあります

Nine of them are at Green Village --

うち９つの建物は グリーン・ビレッジにあり―

you've just seen inside some of these homes --

さきほど ご紹介した建物は ここにあります―

and we fill them with bespoke furniture,

オーダーメイドの家具を入れ

we surround them with veggie gardens,

まわりには菜園を設けました

We're also working on a little house for export.

This is a traditional Sumbanese home that we replicated,

right down to the details and textiles.

A restaurant with an open-air kitchen.

It looks a lot like a kitchen, right?

まさにキッチンという感じでしょう

And a bridge that spans 22 meters across a river.

こちらの川にかかった橋は 22mの長さがあります

Now, what we're doing, it's not entirely new.

私たちの取組みは そんなに新しいことではありません

From little huts to elaborate bridges like this one in Java,

小屋から 複雑な橋― このジャワ島の橋のようなものまで

bamboo has been in use across the tropical regions of the world

竹は 世界中の熱帯で ずっと使われてきました

for literally tens of thousands of years.

文字どおり 何万年もの間です

There are islands and even continents that were first reached by bamboo rafts.

竹のいかだで初めて漂着した島や 大陸まであります

But until recently,

でも 最近までは

it was almost impossible to reliably protect bamboo from insects,

虫害から確実に竹を守ることは ほぼ不可能であったため

and so, just about everything that was ever built out of bamboo is gone.

竹で作られたものは全て ダメになってしまいました

Unprotected bamboo weathers.

竹は 保護しなければ 色あせますし

Untreated bamboo gets eaten to dust.

And so that's why most people, especially in Asia,

think that you couldn't be poor enough or rural enough to actually want

And so we thought,

what will it take to change their minds,

to convince people that bamboo is worth building with,

First, we needed safe treatment solutions.

Borax is a natural salt.

It turns bamboo into a viable building material.

Treat it properly, design it carefully,

正しく扱い 注意深く設計をすることで

and a bamboo structure can last a lifetime.

竹の建築は 一生ものになります

Second, build something extraordinary out of it.

つぎに 傑出したものを 作り出すこと

Inspire people.

人々の心を動かすのです

Fortunately,

幸いにも

Balinese culture fosters craftsmanship.

バリでは職人技術を 育む文化があり

It values the artisan.

職人が尊重されています

So combine those with the adventurous outliers

これらに加えるのが 冒険的なスパイス

from new generations of locally trained architects

地元で生まれた 新進気鋭の建築家

and designers and engineers,

デザイナー エンジニアです

and always remember that you are designing

設計のとき 常に肝に銘じておくべきは

for curving, tapering, hollow poles.

曲がり 先細で空洞の筒を 扱うということです

No two poles alike, no straight lines,

竹は どれ一つとして同じものはなく 直線もありません

no two-by-fours here.

ツーバイフォーの木材 ではないのです

The tried-and-true, well-crafted formulas and vocabulary of architecture

建築界で実証された 精巧な方式や用語などは

do not apply here.

ここでは通用しません

We have had to invent our own rules.

自らルールも作り出さないと いけませんでした

We ask the bamboo what it's good at, what it wants to become,

何が得意で どうなりたいのか 竹の声に耳を傾け

and what it says is: respect it, design for its strengths,

導かれた答えが 竹を尊重し その強みに合わせて設計し

protect it from water, and to make the most of its curves.

水から守り 曲線を生かす ということでした

So we design in real 3D,

リアル３Ｄで設計し

making scale structural models

構造模型を作るのにも

out of the same material that we'll later use to build the house.

実際の建築で使う素材を 使います

And bamboo model-making, it's an art,

竹の設計模型は それ自体が芸術で

as well as some hardcore engineering.

本格的なエンジニアリングでもあります

So that's the blueprint of the house.

これが家の青写真です

(Laughter)

And we bring it to site,

これを現場に持ち込み

and with tiny rulers, we measure each pole,

小さな巻尺で竹の棹を 一本一本 計測し

and consider each curve, and we choose a piece of bamboo from the pile

曲がり具合を見て その場で たくさんの竹から

to replicate that house on site.

模型を再現するのに ふさわしい竹を選び出しました

When it comes down to the details, we consider everything.

細部に至っては あらゆることを考慮します

Why are doors so often rectangular?

なぜドアは 長方形が多いのか

Why not round?

なぜ丸ではないのか

How could you make a door better?

どうすれば ドアを良くできるか

Well, its hinges battle with gravity,

蝶番（ちょうつがい）と重力とでは

and gravity will always win in the end,

重力が勝つに 決まっていますから

so why not have it pivot on the center

最初から バランスが取れるよう

where it can stay balanced?

中央に回転軸を 置いたらどうか

And while you're at it, why not doors shaped like teardrops?

それなら ドアを 涙型にしたらどうか

To reap the selective benefits and work within the constraints

この素材にある 制約のなかで

of this material,

選り抜きの恩恵を 享受すべく

we have really had to push ourselves,

私たちは自らを 限界まで押しやり

and within that constraint, we have found space for something new.

その制約のなかで 新しい工夫の余地を見つけました

It's a challenge: how do you make a ceiling

まさにチャレンジです まっすぐな板もないのに

if you don't have any flat boards to work with?

どうやって 天井を作るというんでしょう

Let me tell you, sometimes I dream of sheet rock and plywood.

正直なところ 時には 石膏ボードや合板がほしいと思います

(Laughter)

But if what you've got is skilled craftsmen

でも もし熟練した職人と

and itsy bitsy little splits,

ちょっと割竹があれば

weave that ceiling together,

一緒に天井を編んで

stretch a canvas over it, lacquer it.

そこにキャンバスを広げて 漆を塗れます

How do you design durable kitchen countertops

こんな風に 曲線でできた建物に合い

that do justice to this curving structure you've just built?

頑丈なキッチン・カウンターを どう設計しますか

Slice up a boulder like a loaf of bread,

食パンみたいに 岩をスライスし

hand-carve each to fit the other,

ピッタリ合うよう 手で削り

leave the crusts on,

固くなった表面は そのまま残しておきます

and what we're doing, it is almost entirely handmade.

つまり ほぼ全てが 手作りなんです

The structural connections of our buildings

私たちの建物の構造は

are reinforced by steel joints, but we use a lot of hand-whittled bamboo pins.

鋼製の継ぎ手で強化できますが 手製の竹の留め具を大量に使います

There are thousands of pins in each floor.

一つの階に 何千もの留め具が使われています

This floor is made of glossy and durable bamboo skin.

こちらの床はつやつやして 丈夫な竹の皮でできています

You can feel the texture under bare feet.

素足で その質感を 感じられます

And the floor that you walk on,

どんな床を歩くかで 歩き方も

can it affect the way that you walk?

変わるのでは ないでしょうか

Can it change the footprint that you'll ultimately leave on the world?

この世界に残す足跡までをも 変えるかもしれません

I remember being nine years old

９歳の私は

and feeling wonder,

感嘆の気持ちと

and possibility,

可能性

and a little bit of idealism.

ちょっとした理想主義を 感じていました

And we've got a really long way to go,

これからの道のりは まだまだ長く

there's a lot left to learn,

学ぶことは たくさんあります

but one thing I know is that with creativity and commitment,

でも 確実なのは 創造力と強い思いがあれば

you can create beauty and comfort

美しさや快適さ､安全性 贅沢ささえ創り出せることです

and safety and even luxury

out of a material that will grow back.
