because there's a lot of autism genetics here.

I mean, Einstein and Mozart and Tesla would all be probably diagnosed

as autistic spectrum today.

And one of the things that is really going to concern me

is getting these kids to be the ones

You have to get away from verbal language.

I think in pictures. I don't think in language.

मै तस्वीरो मे सोचती हूँ

Now, the thing about the autistic mind is it attends to details.

अब, औटिसटिक दिमाग के बारे मे एक विशेष चीज़ यह है कि

वह बारिकियो पर गौर करता है

This is a test where you either have to pick out the big letters

अच्छा , यह एक परीक्षा है , जहाँ आपको या तो केवल

बडे अक्षर चुनने हैं , या सिर्फ छोटे अक्षर चुनने हैं ।

or the little letters,

and the autistic mind picks out the little letters more quickly.

और औटिसटिक दिमाग

छोटे अक्षर जल्दी चुनता है

And the thing is, the normal brain ignores the details.

और यह बात भी है कि सामन्य दिमाग बारिकियो पर ध्यान नही देता।

Well, if you're building a bridge, details are pretty important

ले्किन, अगर आप एक पुल बनाने जा रहे है तो बारिकियो पर ध्यान देना ज़रूरी है

अन्यथा वह गिर जाएगा,अगर आप्अने उसकी बारिकियों पर गौर नही किया।

because it'll fall down if you ignore the details.

और सबसे बडी चिंता आज मुझे नीति सबंधी है

And one of my big concerns with a lot of policy things today

बहुत सी चीज़े धुन्धली हो रही है

is things are getting too abstract.

People are getting away from doing hands-on stuff.

लोग हाथ मे लिए काम करने

से बच रहे है

I'm really concerned that a lot of the schools

मुझे सचमुच चिन्ता हो रही है कि बहुत से स्कूलो ने

have taken out the hands-on classes, because art, and classes like that --

कई कक्षाएँ बन्द कर दी है

जैसे कला और अन्य ऐसी कक्षाएँ क्योंकि

those are the classes where I excelled.

ये ही वो कक्षाएँ है जिनमे मैं अच्छी थी

In my work with cattle,

ठीक है, मवेशियों के साथ अपने काम में,

I noticed a lot of little things that most people don't notice

मैंने बहुत कुछ छोटी चीजें देखी जो कि ज्यादातर लोगों नहीं देखते है

would make the cattle balk.

उदाहरण के लिए पशुओं को क्या डराता है,

For example, this flag waving right in front of the veterinary facility.

जैसे वह हिलता हुआ झडा, पशु चिकित्सा सुविधा के सामने

This feed yard was going to tear down their whole veterinary facility;

all they needed to do was move the flag.

Rapid movement, contrast.

In the early '70s when I started, I got right down in the chutes

मैने जब 1970 मे शुरु किया , तब मै सीधे

ढ्लान मे नीचे उतर गई यह देख्नने के लिये कि पशुओ को क्या दिखता है।

to see what cattle were seeing.

People thought that was crazy.

लोगो ने सोचा कि मै पागल हूँ.उन्हें बाड़ पर पड़ा हुआ कोट डराता था

A coat on a fence would make them balk, shadows would make them balk,

परछाईयाँ उन्हे डरा देती थी, एक ज़मीन पर पडा पाईप भी

a hose on the floor -- people weren't noticing these things.

लोग इन बातो पर ध्यान नही दे रहे थे।

A chain hanging down ...

नीचे लटकती एक ज़ंज़ीर,

And that's shown very, very nicely in the movie.

और यह सब इस फ़िल्म मे बहुत अछे से दिखाया है।

In fact, I loved the movie, how they duplicated all my projects.

दरासल , मुझे यह फ़िल्म बेहद पसंद आई उन्होने

मेरे सभी कार्यो को हूबहू दिखाया है.यह मेरी पढ़ाकू तस्वीर है

That's the geek side.

मेरे बनाए चित्र भी इस फ़िल्म मे प्रदर्शित किए है

My drawings got to star in the movie, too.

And, actually, it's called "Temple Grandin,"

और सचमुच इस फ़िल्म का नाम भी टेम्पल ग्रैन्डिन है,

not "Thinking in Pictures."

आप चित्रो मे नही सोच रहे है

So what is thinking in pictures?

तो फ़िर चित्रो मे सोचना क्या है? यह सही मे एक फ़िल्म कि तरह है

It's literally movies in your head.

आपके दिमाग के अंदर

My mind works like Google for images.

मेरा दिमाग गूगल की तरह काम करता है, चित्रो के लिये

जब , मैं एक छोटी बच्ची थी तब मैं नही जानती थी कि मेरी सोच अलग है

When I was a young kid, I didn't know my thinking was different.

मुझे लगता था कि सभी चित्रो में सोचते है

I thought everybody thought in pictures.

और फ़िर जब मैने अपनी किताब "थिंकिंग इन पिक्चर्स" लिखी

Then when I did my book, "Thinking in Pictures,"

मैने कई लोगो का इन्टरवियू किया कि वो कैसे सोचते है

I started interviewing people about how they think.

And I was shocked to find out that my thinking was quite different.

और मै हैरान रह गई यह देख कर कि मेरी सोच

कितनी अलग है। जैसे कि मै कहती हूँ

Like if I say, "Think about a church steeple,"

"चर्च के घंटाघर के बारे मे सोचो

most people get this sort of generalized generic one.

बहुत से लोगो को यह साधारणता से एक आम छवि समझ आ जाएगी

Now, maybe that's not true in this room,

हो सकता है कि यह सही न हो इस कमरे मे

but it's going to be true in a lot of different places.

लेकिन यह सही होगा बहुत सी अन्य जगहो में

I see only specific pictures.

मै बहुत सटीक तस्वीरे देखती हूँ

They flash up into my memory, just like Google for pictures.

वे अपने आप मेरे दिमाग मे आ जाती है, एकदम गूगल की तस्वीरो की तरह

And in the movie, they've got a great scene in there,

और मेरी फ़िल्म मे , एक सीन है

जिसमे "जूता" शब्द का इस्तेमाल होता है, और 50 से 60 जोडी जूते

where the word "shoe" is said, and a whole bunch of '50s and '60s shoes

pop into my imagination.

मेरे दिमाग मे आ जाते हैं

OK, there's my childhood church; that's specific.

ओके, ये मेरे बचपन की चर्च की तस्वीर है

यह विशिष्ट है, और भी है, फ़ोर्ट कोलिन्स

There's some more, Fort Collins.

OK, how about famous ones?

ओके , अब कुछ प्रसिद्ध तस्वी्रे कैसी रहेंगी?

And they just kind of come up, kind of like this.

और वो खुद ही दिमाग मे आ जाती है,कु्छ इस तरह से

Just really quickly, like Google for pictures.

जल्दी से, जैसे, गूगल पर एकदम से मिल जाती है

And they come up one at a time,

और वो एक एक कर के ऊपर आने लगती है

and then I think, "OK, well, maybe we can have it snow,

और मै सोचती हूँ , ओके चलो शायद बर्फ़ की तरह धीरे धीरे गिरने दो

or we can have a thunderstorm,"

य तूफ़ान की तरह आने दो

and I can hold it there and turn them into videos.

और मै उन्हे वहाँ रोक कर रख सकती हूँ और उनके विडियो बना सकती हूँ

Now, visual thinking was a tremendous asset

यह ज़रूर है कि चित्रो वाली सोच बहुत फ़ायदेमंद है

in my work designing cattle-handling facilities.

मवेशियो को संभालने के मेरे काम मे

And I've worked really hard on improving how cattle are treated

और मैने बहुत मेहनत की है यह निश्चित करने मे

कि कैसे मवेशियो को मारने के समय रखा जाता है

at the slaughter plant.

मैन आपको कोई दहला देने वाले विभत्स द्र्श्य नही दिखाऊँगी

I'm not going to go into any gucky slaughter slides.

I've got that stuff up on YouTube, if you want to look at it.

But one of the things that I was able to do in my design work

is I could test-run a piece of equipment in my mind,

just like a virtual reality computer system.

And this is an aerial view of a recreation of one of my projects

that was used in the movie.

That was like just so super cool.

वह वास्त्व मे बहुत मस्त था

And there were a lot of, kind of, Asperger types and autism types

और वहाँ एस्पर्गर के प्रकार की तरह के बहुत व्यक्ति थे,

और औटिस्म के प्रकार के भी, फिल्म सेट पर काम करने वालों मे भी बहुत

working out there on the movie set, too.

But one of the things that really worries me is:

लेकिन वास्तव मे एक चीज़ है जिसकी मुझे चिंता है

वह ये कि आज के बच्चे किस दिशा मे जा रहे है

Where's the younger version of those kids going today?

They're not ending up in Silicon Valley,

वे सिलिकौन वैली मे नही पहुँच रहे जहाँ उन्हे होना चहिये था

where they belong.

One of the things I learned very early on because I wasn't that social,

अब, एक बात जो मैने बहुत जल्दी सीखी है, क्योकि मै बहुत ज्याद घुलति -मिलती नही हूँ लोगो मे

is I had to sell my work, and not myself.

कि मुझे अपने काम को बेचना है अपने आप को नही

And the way I sold livestock jobs is I showed off my drawings,

और जिस तरह से मैने पशुओ कीं नौकरियों को बेचा

मैने अपने चित्र दिखाए, मैनें चीजों की तस्वीरें दिखाई.

I showed off pictures of things.

Another thing that helped me as a little kid

एक और बात जिसने कि मेरी मदद की है, वह ये कि जब मै छोटी थी

is, boy, in the '50s, you were taught manners.

हमे सन 50 मे सचमुच शिष्टाचार सिखाया गया था.

You were taught you can't pull the merchandise off the shelves

आपको सिखाया गया था आप अलमारियों से सामान नहीं खींच सकते हैं

दुकानो मे और उसे बिखेर नही सकते

in the store and throw it around.

और जब बच्चे तीसरी या चौथी कक्षा मे आते है

When kids get to be in third or fourth grade,

you might see that this kid's going to be a visual thinker,

आपदेख सकते है कि बच्चा एक दृश्य विचारक होने जा रहा है,

drawing in perspective.

एक परिप्रेक्ष्य मे यह चित्र अब, मैं

Now, I want to emphasize

निश्चित रूप से बताना चाह्ती हू कि हर औटिस्टिक बच्चा

that not every autistic kid is going to be a visual thinker.

दृश्य विचारक नही हो सकता

Now, I had this brain scan done several years ago,

अब, मेरा एक ब्रेन स्कैन किया गया कई साल पहले,

and I used to joke around about having a gigantic Internet trunk line

और मैं एक मजाक किया करती हू कि मेरे पास एक

विशाल इंटरनेट ट्रंक लाइन

going deep into my visual cortex.

मै द्र्श्य कल्पना मे गहरी जा रहा है.

This is tensor imaging.

यह टेन्सर इमेजिंग है

And my great big Internet trunk line is twice as big as the control's.

और मेरी विशाल इंटरनेट ट्रंक लाइन

कंट्रोल से दुगनी बडी है

The red lines there are me,

यह लाल लकीरे मै हूँ

and the blue lines are the sex and age-matched control.

और नीली लकीरे लैन्गिक और उम्र के सामान कंट्रोल है

And there I got a gigantic one,

और उधर एक बडा सा है

and the control over there, the blue one, has got a really small one.

और वह कंट्रोल , वह नीले कट्रोल

मे एक बहुत सा छोटा सा है

And some of the research now is showing

और कुछ खोजों मे यह सामने आ रहा है

that people on the spectrum actually think with the primary visual cortex.

यह है कि स्पेक्ट्रम पर लोग वास्तव में प्राथमिक दृश्य के साथ लगता है.

Now, the thing is, the visual thinker is just one kind of mind.

अब, बात यह है, दृश्य विचारक, दिमाग का ,सिर्फ एक प्रकार है

You see, the autistic mind tends to be a specialist mind --

आप सम्झिए कि , औटिस्टिक दिमाग एक विशेश प्रकार का दिमाग होता है

good at one thing, bad at something else.

किसी चीज़ मे अच्छा, किसी मे खराब

And where I was bad was algebra.

और क्योकी मै बीज गणित मे बुरी थी और मुझे कभी भी अनुमति नही मिली

And I was never allowed to take geometry or trig.

कि मै ज्योमैट्री य ट्रिग्नोमैट्रि सीखू

Gigantic mistake.

वह बहुत बडी गलती थी,मैंने बहुत बच्चों को देखा जिन्हे बीजगणित को छोड कर

I'm finding a lot of kids who need to skip algebra,

go right to geometry and trig.

सीधे ज्योमैट्री य ट्रिग्नोमैट्रि सीखनी चाहिए

Now, another kind of mind is the pattern thinker.

अब, दिमाग क एक और प्रकार , पैटर्न विचारक है.

More abstract.

अधिक अमूर्त. ये अपने इंजिनियर रहे हैं,

These are your engineers, your computer programmers.

या आपके कम्पयूट्र प्रोग्रामर है

This is pattern thinking.

अब, यह पैटर्न सोच है , जैसे यह प्रार्थना करता हुआ कीडा

That praying mantis is made from a single sheet of paper --

कागज़ के एक टुकडे से बनाया है

no scotch tape, no cuts.

कोई स्कॉच टेप, कोई काट-पीट नही

And there in the background is the pattern for folding it.

और वहाँ पीछे इसे बनाने का तरीका दिखाया हुआ है

Here are the types of thinking:

यहाँ कुछ सोचने के प्रकार बताए है

photo-realistic visual thinkers, like me;

मेरी तरह यथार्थवादी दृश्य विचारक

pattern thinkers, music and math minds.

पैटर्न विचारक, संगीत और गणित मन.

Some of these oftentimes have problems with reading.

इन्मे से कुछ को अक्सर पढ़ने की समस्या होती है

You also will see these kind of problems with kids that are dyslexic.

आप इस तरह की समस्याए उनमे भी देख सकते है

जैसे डिसलिक्सिक बच्चे

You'll see these different kinds of minds.

आप मन के इन विभिन्न प्रका्रो को देखे

And then there's a verbal mind, they know every fact about everything.

और फिर वहाँ एक मौखिक दिमाग है. उन्हे सब कुछ के बारे में हर तथ्य पता होता है

अब, एक बात सवेदना से सबधी मुद्दों की है.

Now, another thing is the sensory issues.

मैं वास्तव में मेरे चेहरे पर इस गैजेट को पहनने के लिए होने के बारे में चिंतित थी

I was really concerned about having to wear this gadget on my face.

And I came in half an hour beforehand

और मैं आधे घंटे में पहले से आई थी

so I could have it put on and kind of get used to it,

ताकि मै इसे पहन सकू और इससे सहज हो सकूँ

and they got it bent so it's not hitting my chin.

और उन्होने इसे मोड दिया है और अब ये मेरी ठोड़ी से नही टकरा रहा है

But sensory is an issue.

पर सवेदना एक बडा मुद्दा है। कुछ बच्चो को फ्लोरोसेंट रोशनी से परेशानी होती है

Some kids are bothered by fluorescent lights;

others have problems with sound sensitivity.

कुछ को आवाज़ की संवेदना से

You know, it's going to be variable.

Now, visual thinking gave me a whole lot of insight

अब, दृश्य सोच ने मुझे बहुत सी अंतर्दृष्टि दी है

into the animal mind.

Because think about it: an animal is a sensory-based thinker,

not verbal -- thinks in pictures, thinks in sounds, thinks in smells.

मौखिक नहीं. वह तस्वीरों में सोचता है.

Think about how much information there is on the local fire hydrant.

सोचिए कि उस आग बुझाने वाले यंत्र के पस कितनी जानकारी है

He knows who's been there --

उसे पता है कि कौन आया था वहाँ और कब आया था

(Laughter)

When they were there.

वे दोस्त थे या दुश्मन, क्या वह कोई ऐसा था जिसके साथ वे मेटिंग कर सकते थे

Are they friend or foe? Is there anybody he can go mate with?

There's a ton of information on that fire hydrant.

उस आग बुझाने वाले यत्र के पास बहुत सी जानकारी है

It's all very detailed information.

और बहुत बारीकियो मे है यह जानकारी है

And looking at these kind of details gave me a lot of insight into animals.

और इस तरह की बारिकियो को देख्नने से

मुझे जानवरों में की सोच समझने की अंतर्दृष्टि मिली है

Now, the animal mind, and also my mind,

अब, पशुओ के दिमाग और मेरे भी दिमाग

puts sensory-based information into categories.

मे संवेदना पर आधारित जानकारी

को श्रेणियों मे रखा जाता है

Man on a horse,

घोड़े पर आदमी

and a man on the ground --

और ज़मीन पर आदमी

that is viewed as two totally different things.

को दो बिल्कुल अलग तरह के रूप में देखा जाता है

You could have a horse that's been abused by a rider.

आपके पास एक घोड़ा है जिससे कि एक सवार द्वारा दुर्व्यवहार किया गया है

They'll be absolutely fine with the veterinarian

वह जानवरों के डॉक्टर के साथ बिल्कुल ठीक रहेगा

and with the horseshoer, but you can't ride him.

और घोडे की नाल लगाने वाले के साथ भी , लेकिन आप उस पर सवारी नही कर सकते

You have another horse, where maybe the horseshoer beat him up,

आपके पास एक और घोडा है , जिसे नाल लगाने वाले ने मारा है

and he'll be terrible for anything on the ground with the veterinarian,

वो बहुत तग करेगा ज़मीन पर रखी चीज़ को देख कर

but a person can ride him.

गाय भी ऐसी ही होती है

Cattle are the same way.

Man on a horse, a man on foot -- they're two different things.

You see, it's a different picture.

See, I want you to think about just how specific this is.

देखो, मैं चाहती हूँ कि आप सम्झे कि यह कितना विशेष है

Now, this ability to put information into categories,

अब, यह श्रेणियों में जानकारी रखने की क्षमता,

I find a lot of people are not very good at this.

मैने देखा है बहुत से लोग इसमे अच्छे नही होते

When I'm out troubleshooting equipment

जब मैं बाहर उपकरणो की समस्या का निवारण कर रही हूँ

or problems with something in a plant,

या संयंत्र में कुछ समस्याओं को देख रही हूँ

they don't seem to be able to figure out:

वे लोग पता नही लगा पाते कि "मेरे लिए यह लोगो को प्रशिक्षण देने का मुद्दा है?"

"Do I have a training-people issue?

Or do I have something wrong with the equipment?"

या "मेरे उपकरणों के साथ कुछ गलत है?"

In other words, categorize equipment problem from a people problem.

दूसरे शब्दों में, उपकरण समस्या का वर्गीकरण ,

लोगों की समस्या से अलग करना

I find a lot of people have difficulty doing that.

मैने देखा इसमे बहुत से लोगों को कठिनाई होती है.

Now, let's say I figure out it's an equipment problem.

अब, मान लीजिए कि मैंने समझ लिया यह एक उपकरण समस्या है.

Is it a minor problem, with something simple I can fix?

तो क्या यह एक छोटी सी समस्या है , इतनी आसान कि मै खुद ही ठीक कर सकती हूँ

या यत्र के पूरे डिज़ाइन मे ही गडगड है?

Or is the whole design of the system wrong?

People have a hard time figuring that out.

बहुत से लोगों को इसे समझने मे कठिनाई होती है.

Let's just look at something like, you know,

चलिए बस ऐसे ही कुछ देखते है, जैसे कि आप जानते है

solving problems with making airlines safer.

एयरलाइनों को सुरक्षित बनाने की समस्याओं को सुलझाना

Yeah, I'm a million-mile flier.

हाँ, मै एक मिलियन माइल फ़्लायर हूँ

I do lots and lots of flying,

और मै बहुत बहुत ज़्यादा हवाई यात्रा करती हूँ

and if I was at the FAA,

और अगर मै FAA मे होती

what would I be doing a lot of direct observation of?

क्या मै कौन सी चीज़ का प्रत्यक्ष अवलोकन कर रही होती?

It would be their airplane tails.

उनके हवाई जहाज की पूंछ का

You know, five fatal wrecks in the last 20 years,

आप जानते हैं, पिछले 20 वर्षों में पांच घातक विनाश हुए है

the tail either came off,

पूंछ या तो पूरा टूट गया या पूंछ के अंदर स्टीयरिंग का सामान टूट गया

or steering stuff inside the tail broke in some way.

It's tails, pure and simple.

समस्या पूंछ मे है स्पष्ट और सीधी बात

And when the pilots walk around the plane, guess what?

और जब पाइल्ट्स जहाज के पीछे जाते है तो वह नही देख पाते

They can't see that stuff inside the tail.

पूंछ के भीतर का सामान

Now as I think about that,

आप जानते है कि अब जब मै इस बारे मे सोच रही हू

I'm pulling up all of that specific information.

तो मै सभी विशेष जानकारिओ के बारे मे सोच रही हूँ

It's specific.

यह विशिष्ट है, अब आप देखे , कि मेरी सोच नीचे से उभरती है

See, my thinking's bottom-up.

I take all the little pieces and I put the pieces together like a puzzle.

मै सारे छोटे छोटे टुकड़े लेती हूँ और उन्हे जोड कर पूरी पहेली सुलझाती हूँ

I just didn't care at all about studying,

until I had Mr. Carlock's science class.

OK, my science teacher got me studying,

Like if the kid loves race cars, let's use race cars for math.

Let's figure out how long it takes a race car to go a certain distance.

देखते है कि रेस कार एक निश्चित समय मे कितनी दूरी तक जा सकती है

In other words, use that fixation

in order to motivate that kid, that's one of the things we need to do.

I really get fed up when the teachers,

especially when you get away from this part of the country,

they don't know what to do with these smart kids.

It just drives me crazy.

What can visual thinkers do when they grow up?

They can do graphic design, all kinds of stuff with computers,

photography, industrial design.

The pattern thinkers -- they're the ones that are going to be your mathematicians,

Another thing that can be very, very, very successful is:

there's a lot of people that may have retired

from working in the software industry,

and they can teach your kid.

And it doesn't matter if what they teach them is old,

I cannot emphasize enough what my science teacher did for me.

the thing about the autism, Asperger-y kind of mind,

you've got to give them a specific task.

Don't just say, "Design new software."

"We're designing software for a phone

and it has to do some specific thing,

TG: Well, first of all, we've got to look at age.

But then you get these smart, geeky kids with a touch of autism,

and that's where you've got to get them turned on

with doing interesting things.

I got social interaction through shared interests --

That was, like, we considered that super cool.

to hope or think that that child loves them, as some might, as most, wish?

You know, the slaughter plants I worked with in the '80s;

they were absolutely awful.

I developed a really simple scoring system for slaughter plants,

where you just measure outcomes:

And to me, knowledge is something that is extremely valuable.

So, maybe over 10 years ago now, our library got flooded.

इंटरनेट तब बहुत बडा नही हुआ था

And I was really upset about all the books being wrecked,

और मै वास्तव में सभी पुस्तकों के बर्बाद होने से परेशान थी

क्योंकि वह ज्ञान था जो नष्ट हो रहा था

because it was knowledge being destroyed.

और सर्वर फार्मं, या डेटा केन्द्र

And server farms, or data centers, are great libraries of knowledge.

ज्ञान के महान पुस्तकालय हैं.
