I would like to share with you a new model of higher education,

Let's meet some of them.

पैट्रिक।

Patrick.

Patrick was born in Liberia to a family of 20 children.

पैट्रिक का जन्म लाईबेरिया में हुआ

During the civil war,

he and his family were forced to flee to Nigeria.

he was soon sent to South Africa

Patrick never gave up his dream of higher education.

Late at night, after work,

he surfed the net, looking for ways to study.

Meet Debbie.

Debbie is from Florida.

Her parents didn't go to college, and neither did any of her siblings.

Debbie has worked all her life,

pays taxes, supports herself month to month,

But Debbie doesn't have the savings for higher education.

She can't pay the tuition.

वो फ़ीस देने में सक्षम नहीं थीं।

Neither could she leave work.

न ही वो अपनी महीने दर महीने की कमाई छोड सकती थीं।

Meet Wael.

Wael is from Syria.

वायल सीरिया से हैं।

He's experiencing firsthand

उन्होंने करीबी से महसूस किया है

the misery, fear and failure imposed on his country.

उस बेचारगी, डर और नाकामयाबी को,

He's a big believer in education.

He knew that if he could find an opportunity for higher education,

The higher education system

उच्च शिक्षा के मौजूदा मॉडल ने

failed Patrick, Debbie and Wael,

पैट्रिक, डेबी और वाएल को केवल निराश ही किया

exactly as it is failing millions of potential students --

ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कि

वो और लाखों होनहार छात्रों को निराश करता है।

millions that graduate high school,

लाखों लोग जो हाई स्कूल पास कर लेते है,

millions that are qualified for higher education,

वो लाखों जिन्हें उच्च शिक्षा पाने का हक़ है,

millions that want to study yet cannot access it for various reasons.

वो लाखों जो आगे पढना चाहते हैं

मगर तमाम कारणों से नहीं कर सकते।

First: financial.

पहला कारण, पैसे की कमी।

Universities are expensive; we all know it.

हम सब जानते हैं कि यूनिवर्सिटी जाना किस कदर महँगा है।

In large parts of the world,

दुनिया के ज्यादातर भागों में,

higher education is unattainable for an average citizen.

उच्च शिक्षा लगभग नामुमकिन ही है

एक आम आदमी के लिये।

This is probably the biggest problem facing our society.

ये शायद सबसे बडी समस्या है

हमारे समाज और दुनिया की।

Higher education stopped being a right for all

उच्च शिक्षा सबका मौलिक अधिकार होने के बजाय

and became a privilege for the few.

सिर्फ़ कुछ ही लोगों का विषेशाधिकार या बपौती बन चुकी है।

Second: cultural.

दूसरा कारण, सामजिक रूढियाँ

वो छात्र जो कि उच्च शिक्षा प्राप्त करने लायक हैं,

Students who are qualified for higher education

can afford -- want to study -- cannot,

खर्चा उठा सकते हैं, पढना चाहते है, वो भी नहीं कर सकते

because it is not decent, it is not a place for a woman.

क्योंकि ये उन के समाज की रीति नहीं हैं,

औरतों के लिये "उचित" नहीं है।

अनगिनत औरतों की यही कहानी है

This is the story of countless women in Africa, for example,

अफ़्रीका में, मिसाल के तौर पर,

prevented from higher education because of cultural barriers.

कि उन्हें उच्च शिक्षा से दूर रखा जाता है

क्योंकि सामाजिक तौर पर इसका रिवाज़ नहीं हैं।

And here comes the third reason:

और तीसरा कारण सुनिये:

UNESCO stated that in 2025,

यूनेस्को के अनुसार, सन 2025 में,

100 million students will be deprived of higher education,

दस करोड छात्र

उच्च शिक्षा पाने से वंचित रह जायेंगे

simply because there will not be enough seats to accommodate them,

सिर्फ़ इस लिये कि कॉलेजों में इतनी सीटें ही नहीं होंगी कि

उन सबको मौका दिया जाये।

to meet the demand.

They will take a placement test, they will pass it,

वो प्रवेश परीक्षा देंगे,

वो प्रवेश परीक्षा पास भी कर लेंगे,

but they still won't have access, because there are no places available.

मगर फिर भी उन्हें मौका नहीं मिलेगा

क्योंकि इतनी जगह ही नहीं होगी।

These are the reasons I founded University of the People,

यही वो कारण हैं कि

मैने यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ़ पीपल की स्थापना की।

ये एक एनजीओ है - बिना कोई फ़ीस लिये

a nonprofit, tuition-free, degree-granting university

बाकायदा डिग्री देने वाली यूनिवर्सिटी,

जो एक रास्ता देती है

to give an alternative,

to create an alternative, to those who have no other;

उन लोगों को जिनके पास कोई रास्ता नहीं बचा है,

an alternative that will be affordable and scalable,

ऐसा रास्ता जो उनकी जेब के हिसाब से है

an alternative that will disrupt the current education system,

and open the gates to higher education for every qualified student

regardless of what they earn, where they live,

चाहे वो कितना भी कम कमाते हों , या दूर-दराज़ में रहते हों,

or what society says about them.

या फ़िर उनके समाज की रूढियाँ उन्हें रोकती हों।

are only three examples out of the 1,700 accepted students

We didn't need to reinvent the wheel.

We just looked at what wasn't working

and used the amazing power of the Internet

to get around it.

We set out to build a model

that will cut down almost entirely the cost of higher education.

And that's how we did it.

First, bricks and mortar cost money.

Universities have expenses that virtual universities don't.

जो इंटरनेट-यूनिवर्सिटी में नहीं होते।

We don't need to pass these expenses on to our students.

इसलिये हमें इन खर्चों के इंतज़ाम के लिये

विद्यार्थियों पर बोझ नहीं डालना पडता है।

क्योंकि वो खर्चे होते ही नहीं हैं।

They don't exist.

We also don't need to worry about capacity.

हमें सीमित सीटों की संख्या से नहीं जूझना पडा

There are no limits of seats in virtual university.

क्योंकि सीटों की कोई सीमा ही नहीं है

इंटरनेट-यूनिवर्सिटी में।

Actually, nobody needs to stand at the back of the lecture hall.

और तो और, किसी को भी

लेक्चर हॉल के पीछे वाली सीट पर नहीं बैठना पडता है,

Textbooks are also something our students don't need to buy.

पाठ्य-पुस्तकों को खरीदने की भी ज़रूरत

हमारे छात्रों को नहीं होती।

By using open educational resources

मुक्त रूप से उपलब्ध शिक्षा-साधनों के इस्तेमाल से,

and the generosity of professors

और उन प्रोफ़ेसरों की दरिया-दिली से,

who are putting their material up free and accessible,

जो अपने ज्ञान और शिक्षा-सामग्री को

मुफ़्त में बाँटने को तैयार है,

we don't need to send our students to buy textbooks.

हमे अपने विद्यार्थियों को पुस्तकें खरीदने के लिये बाध्य नहीं करना होता।

All of our materials come free.

हमारी सारी पाठ्य-सामग्री मुफ़्त में मिलती है।

Even professors,

यहाँ तक कि प्रोफ़ेसर भी,

the most expensive line in any university balance sheet,

come free to our students.

Over 3,000 of them,

We use this sound pedagogical model

to encourage our students from all over the world

दुनिया भर के छात्रों को बढावा देने के लिये

to interact and study together,

कि वो साथ पढे और एक दूसरे से सीखें

and also to reduce the time our professors need

और उस अवधि को कम करें

जो कि हमारे प्रोफ़ेसरों को गॄह-कार्य जाँचनें में लगानी पडती है।

to labor over class assignments.

जहाँ इंटरनेट ने दुनिया को एक गाँव बना दिया है,

If the Internet has made us a global village,

this model can develop its future leadership.

वहीं ये मॉडल से भविष्य के कर्णधारों का विकास करेगा।

Look how we do it.

आइये देखें हम क्या करते हैं।

We only offer two programs:

हम केवल दो ही डिग्री करवाते हैं:

business administration and computer science,

बिजेनेस की और कमप्यूट्रर विज्ञान की।

the two programs most in demand worldwide,

ये वो दो डिग्रियाँ

जिनकी दुनिया में सबसे ज्यादा माँग है।

the two programs that are likeliest to help our students find a job.

इन दो डिग्रियाँ को पाने पर

When our students are accepted,

एड्मिशन के बाद हमारे छात्रो को

they are placed in a small classroom of 20 to 30 students,

to ensure that those who need personalized attention get it.

Moreover, for every nine-week course, they meet a new peer,

Every week, every student must contribute to the class discussion,

This way, we open our students' minds,

we develop a positive shift in attitude toward different cultures.

By the end of each week, the students take a quiz,

We open the gates for higher education for every qualified student.

Every student with a high school diploma,

हर वो विद्यार्थी जो स्कूल उत्तीर्ण कर चुका है,

sufficient English and Internet connection

जिसे ज़रूरी अँग्रेज़ी आती है, और जिसके पास इंटरनेट है,

can study with us.

हमारे साथ पढ सकता है।

We don't use audio, we don't use video.

हम ऑडियो इस्तेमाल नहीं करते, वीडियो भी नहीं।

Broadband is not necessary.

ब्रॉड-बैड भी ज़रूरी नहीं है।

Any student from any part of the world with any Internet connection

दुनिया मे कहीं से भी, कोई भी छात्र

किसी भी तरह के इंटरनेट कनेक्श्न से

can study with us.

We are tuition free.

हम फ़ीस नहीं लेते।

हम अपने छात्रों से बस इतना चाहते हैं

All we ask our students to cover is the cost of their exams,

100 dollars per exam.

A full-time bachelor's degree student taking 40 courses

फ़ुल टाइम बैचलर-डिग्री के छात्र

को 40 कोर्स लेने होगें,

will pay 1,000 dollars a year,

और करीब प्रति वर्ष 1000 डॉलर खर्च करने होंगे,

4,000 dollars for the entire degree.

And for those who cannot afford even this,

we offer them a variety of scholarships.

It is our mission that nobody will be left behind

With 5,000 students in 2016, this model is financially sustainable.

Five years ago, it was a vision.

Last month, we got the ultimate academic endorsement to our model.

University of the People is now fully accredited.

यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ़ पीपल अब पूरी तरह से मान्यता-प्राप्त है।

an era that will witness the disruption of the higher education model

ऐसा ज़माना जो गवाह होगा

भारी बदलाव का, उच्च शिक्षा के मॉडल में

as we know it today,

from being a privilege for the few

केवल कुछ ही लोगों के लिये उपलब्ध अधिकार की जगह

to becoming a basic right, affordable and accessible for all.

उस के एक मौलिक अधिकार में बदलने का समय,
