We grew up

interacting with the physical objects around us.

There are an enormous number of them that we use every day.

Unlike most of our computing devices,

these objects are much more fun to use.

When you talk about objects,

one other thing automatically comes attached to that thing,

how we manipulate these objects,

We use gestures not only to interact with these objects,

but we also use them to interact with each other.

A gesture of "Namaste!", maybe, to respect someone, or maybe,

નમસ્તે ની મુદ્રા,કદાચ સામેવાળાને માનાર્થે,

in India I don't need to teach a kid that this means

ભારતમાં કોઇ નાના છોકરાને પણ એ શીખવવુ નથી પડતુ કે આ મુદ્રા એટલે

It comes as a part of our everyday learning.

એ આપણા રોજબરોજની શિક્ષાનો જ એક ભાગ હોય છે.

So, I am very interested, from the beginning,

એટલે, હું ઘણો રુચિત છું,

શરૂઆત થી જ, કે કઈ રીતે

how our knowledge about everyday objects and gestures,

કઈ રીતે આપણું જ્ઞાન

રોજબરોજના પદાર્થો અને હાવભાવ વિશે,

and how we use these objects,

અને કઈ રીતે આપણે આ પદાર્થો ને વાપરીએ છીએ,

can be leveraged to our interactions with the digital world.

Rather than using a keyboard and mouse,

કિ-બોર્ડ કે માઊસ નો ઉપયોગ કરવા ની બદલે,

why can I not use my computer

શા માટે હું મારુ કોમ્પ્યુટર

in the same way that I interact in the physical world?

એક સામાન્ય ભૌતિક પદાર્થની જેમ ન વાપરી શકુ?

So, I started this exploration around eight years back,

એટલે આઠ વર્ષ પહેલા મે મારી શોધ શરુ કરી.

and it literally started with a mouse on my desk.

અને એ (શોધ) ખરેખર મારા ટેબલ પરના માઊસથી શરુ થઇ.

Rather than using it for my computer, I actually opened it.

માઊસને મારા કોમ્પ્યુટર માટે વાપરવા ની બદલે,

મે એને ખોલી નાખ્યુ.

Most of you might be aware that, in those days,

તમારામાંથી મોટાભાગનાને એ ખ્યાલ હશે કે એ સમયમાં,

the mouse used to come with a ball inside,

માઊસ અંદર એક બોલ સાથે આવતા'તા.

and there were two rollers

અને સાથે બે રોલરો આવતા'તા.

that actually guide the computer where the ball is moving,

જે ખરેખર કોમ્પ્યુટરને માર્ગદર્શિત કે કરતા'તા, કે બોલ કઈ તરફ જઈ રહ્યો છે.

and, accordingly, where the mouse is moving.

અને, તે મુજબ, માઊસ કઈ તરફ જઈ રહ્યુ છે.

So, I was interested in these two rollers,

એટલે, હું આ બે રોલરોમાં રુચિત થયો.

and I actually wanted more, so I borrowed another mouse from a friend --

never returned to him --

and I now had four rollers.

Interestingly, what I did with these rollers is,

basically, I took them off of these mouses and then put them in one line.

It had some strings and pulleys and some springs.

What I got is basically a gesture-interface device

that actually acts as a motion-sensing device

made for two dollars.

So, here, whatever movement I do in my physical world

is actually replicated inside the digital world

just using this small device that I made, around eight years back,

માત્ર આ નાનુ યંત્ર વાપરીને, જે મેં આજથી આઠ વર્ષ પહેલા બનાવ્યું,

in 2000.

Because I was interested in integrating these two worlds,

I thought of sticky notes.

I thought, "Why can I not connect

A message written on a sticky note to my mom,

can come to an SMS,

or maybe a meeting reminder

automatically syncs with my digital calendar --

આપમેળે જ મારા ડીજીટલ કેલેન્ડર સાથે કામ કરીને

a to-do list that automatically syncs with you.

કરવાના કાર્યો ની યાદી જે આપમેળે તમારી સાથે સંકારિત થયી ને કામ કરે.

But you can also search in the digital world,

અને તમે ડીજીટલ જગતમાં કઈ પણ શોધી શકો,

or maybe you can write a query, saying,

કે પછી તમે કોઈ પ્રશ્ન લખી શકો, માત્ર બોલીને

"What is Dr. Smith's address?"

ડો. સ્મિથનુ સરનામુ શુ છે ?

and this small system actually prints it out --

નાની પ્રણાલી ખરેખર તે મુદ્રિત કરી આપે-

so it actually acts like a paper input-output system,

એટલે તે એક આગત-નિર્ગત પ્રણાલી તરીકે કામ કરે.

just made out of paper.

In another exploration,

I thought of making a pen that can draw in three dimensions.

મે એક ત્રણ પરીમાણમા ચિત્રણ કરે તેવી પેન બનાવવાનુ વિચાર્યુ.

So, I implemented this pen that can help designers and architects

એટલે, મે આ પેન બનાવી.

જે ડિઝાઈનર અને આર્કિટેકટને મદદ કરી શકે

not only think in three dimensions,

ના માત્ર ત્રિજા પરીમાણમાં વિચારવામાં,

but they can actually draw,

પરંતુ ખરેખર દોરવામાં

so that it's more intuitive to use that way.

Then I thought, "Why not make a Google Map,

પછી મે વિચાર્યુ, શા માટે ગુગલ મેપ ન બનાવુ?

but in the physical world?"

Rather than typing a keyword to find something,

કશુ શોધવા કી-બોર્ડથી ટાઇપ કરવા ની બદલે

I put my objects on top of it.

હુ મારા પદાર્થોને તેના પર મુકુ.

If I put a boarding pass, it will show me where the flight gate is.

જો હુ તેના પર બોર્ડીંગ પાસ મુકુ તો તે મને બોર્ડીગ ગેટની જગ્યા બતાવશે.

A coffee cup will show where you can find more coffee,

એક કોફી કપ બતાવશે કે ક્યાં તમે વધારે કોફી શોધી શકશો.

or where you can trash the cup.

કે પછી ક્યાં તમે કપ ને ફેંકી શકશો.

So, these were some of the earlier explorations I did

તો, આ હતી કેટલીક મારી શરૂઆત ની શોધો, કારણકે

because the goal was to connect these two worlds seamlessly.

મારો હેતુ હતો આ બે વિશ્વ (ભૌતિક અને ડીજીટલ) ને સહજ રીતે જોડવાનો.

Among all these experiments,

આ બધા પ્રયોગોમા,

there was one thing in common:

એક બાબત સમાન હતી:

I was trying to bring a part of the physical world

હું ભૌતિક જગતના એક ભાગને ડિજીટલ જગતમાં લાવવા માંગતો હતો.

to the digital world.

હું પદાર્થોના કોઈ ભાગને,

I was taking some part of the objects,

or any of the intuitiveness of real life,

કે પછી ભૌતિક જગતની અંતઃસ્ફુર્ણાને,

and bringing them to the digital world,

ડિજીટલ જગતમાં લાવવા માંગતો હતો,

because the goal was to make our computing interfaces more intuitive.

But then I realized that we humans are not actually interested in computing.

What we are interested in is information.

We want to know about things.

We want to know about dynamic things going around.

આપણે આપણી આસપાસ ચાલતી બહૂવિધ બાબતો વિષે જાણવા માગીએ છીએ.

So I thought, around last year -- in the beginning of the last year --

એવું મે વિચાર્યુ, લગભગ પાછલા વર્ષે- પાછલા વર્ષની શરુઆત માં

I started thinking, "Why can I not take this approach in the reverse way?"

હું વિચારવા લાગ્યૉ," હું આ વલણને ઉલટી રીતે શા માટે ના લઈ શકું?"

કદાચ, " જો હું મારા ડીજીટલ વિશ્વને લઈ

Maybe, "How about I take my digital world

and paint the physical world with that digital information?"

અને ભૌતિક જગતને આ ડીજીટલ માહિતિથી રંગી દઉં?"

કારણકે પિકસેલ ખરેખર,અહિં અત્યારે, આ લંબચોરસ સાધનમાં સમાયેલા છે.

Because pixels are actually, right now, confined in these rectangular devices

that fit in our pockets.

Why can I not remove this confine

and take that to my everyday objects, everyday life

so that I don't need to learn the new language

for interacting with those pixels?

So, in order to realize this dream,

તેથી, મારા સ્વપ્નને હકીકત નુ સ્વરુપ આપવા

I actually thought of putting a big-size projector on my head.

મે ખરેખર મારા માથા પર મોટી સાઇઝ નું પ્રોજેકટર મુકવાનુ વિચાર્યુ.

I think that's why this is called a head-mounted projector, isn't it?

મારા ખ્યાલથી એટલા માટે જ એ માથા સાથે જોડાયેલુ પ્રોજેક્ટર કહેવાતુ હશે,ખરું ને?

I took it very literally,

મેં એને શબ્દસહ લઇ લીધું.

and took my bike helmet,

અને મારા બાઇક નું હેલ્મેટ લીધું

put a little cut over there so that the projector actually fits nicely.

ત્યાં નાનો કાપો મુક્યો જેથી કરીને પ્રોજેક્ટર સારી રીતે ફીટ થઇ શકે.

So now, what I can do --

તો હવે, હું શું કરી શકું?

I can augment the world around me with this digital information.

હું મારી આસપાસ ના વિશ્વને આ ડીજીટલ માહિતિ થી વિકસાવી શકું.

But later,

પરંતુ પછીથી,

I realized that I actually wanted to interact

with those digital pixels, also.

So I put a small camera over there that acts as a digital eye.

Later, we moved to a much better,

consumer-oriented pendant version of that,

You can start using any surface, any wall around you,

as an interface.

The camera is actually tracking all your gestures.

કેમેરો હકીકતે તમારા દરેક અંગભાવો ને કેદ કરે છે.

Whatever you're doing with your hands,

તમારા હાથ વડે જે કંઇ પણ તમે કરો છો,

it's understanding that gesture.

એ આ અંગભાવો ને સમજે છે.

And, actually, if you see, there are some color markers

અને, ખરેખર, જો તમે જુઓ તો, થોડા રંગીન સુચકો છે.

that in the beginning version we are using with it.

You can start painting on any wall.

You stop by a wall, and start painting on that wall.

But we are not only tracking one finger, here.

We are giving you the freedom of using all of both of your hands,

so you can actually use both of your hands to zoom into or zoom out

The camera is actually doing -- just, getting all the images --

is doing the edge recognition and also the color recognition

and so many other small algorithms are going on inside.

So, technically, it's a little bit complex,

but it gives you an output which is more intuitive to use, in some sense.

But I'm more excited that you can actually take it outside.

Rather than getting your camera out of your pocket,

you can just do the gesture of taking a photo,

and it takes a photo for you.

So, we are looking for an era

Here, I'm dialing a phone number just using my hand.

The camera is actually not only understanding your hand movements,

And I think this technology will not only change the way --

Yes.

It will change the way we interact with people, also,

The fun part is, I'm going to the Boston metro,

and playing a pong game inside the train on the ground, right?

And I think the imagination is the only limit

of what you can think of

And many of you are excited about the next-generation tablet computers

So, rather than waiting for that,

I actually made my own, just using a piece of paper.

So, what I did here is remove the camera --

All the webcam cameras have a microphone inside the camera.

બધા વેબ કેમેરાની અંદર માઈક્રોફોન હોય છે.

I removed the microphone from that,

મે એ માઈક્રોફોન કાઢી લીધુ.

and then just pinched that --

અને મે તેને ચોંટાડી દીધુ.

like I just made a clip out of the microphone --

જાણે માઈક્રોફોન માથી ટુકડો કાપ્યો હોય -

and clipped that to a piece of paper, any paper that you found around.

અને તેને એક કાગળ પર લગાડી દીધો - કોઈ પણ સામાન્ય કાગળ.

So now the sound of the touch

એટલે હવે કાગળને થતો સ્પર્શનો અવાજ

And why only computers? We can just play with papers.

Paper world is interesting to play with.

કાગળનુ વિશ્વ બહુ રોચક છે.

Here, I'm taking a part of a document,

અહી હુ એક દસ્તાવેજનો એક ભાગ લઈ રહ્યો છુ

and putting over here a second part from a second place,

અને અહી બીજા દસ્તાવેજનો બીજો ભાગ મુકી રહ્યો છુ.

and I'm actually modifying the information that I have over there.

Yeah. And I say, "OK, this looks nice, let me print it out, that thing."

So the workflow is more intuitive,

I think that integrating information to everyday objects

આપણને ન ફક્ત બે વિશ્વોના (ભૌતિક અને ડિજીટલ) ભાગલાથી

will not only help us to get rid of the digital divide,

the gap between these two worlds,

મુક્તિ મળશે,

but will also help us, in some way,

પરંતુ અમુક રીતે તે આપણને,

to stay human,

મનુષ્ય બની રહેવામાં,

to be more connected to our physical world.

ભૌતિક જગતથી જોડાયેલા રહેવામા પણ મદદ કરશે.

And it will actually help us not end up being machines

અને એ આપણને મશીનની સામે મશીન બની

sitting in front of other machines.

બેસી રહેવાથી બચવામાં પણ મદદ કરશે.

This technology can be used for them to speak out in a different way
