We grew up

interacting with the physical objects around us.

There are an enormous number of them that we use every day.

Unlike most of our computing devices,

these objects are much more fun to use.

When you talk about objects,

one other thing automatically comes attached to that thing,

and that is gestures:

how we manipulate these objects,

We use gestures not only to interact with these objects,

but we also use them to interact with each other.

in India I don't need to teach a kid that this means

It comes as a part of our everyday learning.

ಅದು ಅವರ ದಿನನಿತ್ಯದ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿತದ್ದು

So, I am very interested, from the beginning,

how our knowledge about everyday objects and gestures,

why can I not use my computer

ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ಗಣಕಯಂತ್ರವನ್ನು ಬಳಸದೆ ಇದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಬಹುದೇ?

in the same way that I interact in the physical world?

ಅದೇ ಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಭೌತಿಕ ವಿಶ್ವದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂವಹನ ನಡೆಸಬಹುದೇ?

So, I started this exploration around eight years back,

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದರ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಹುಡುಕಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂಟು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡೆ,

and it literally started with a mouse on my desk.

ಮತ್ತು ಇದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಾನು ಮೌಸ್ ಒಂದನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಳಸಿದೆ

Rather than using it for my computer, I actually opened it.

Most of you might be aware that, in those days,

ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಜನಗಳಿಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿರಬಹುದು

the mouse used to come with a ball inside,

ಹಿಂದೆ ನಾವು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಮೌಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಬಾಲ್ ಇರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು,

and there were two rollers

that actually guide the computer where the ball is moving,

and, accordingly, where the mouse is moving.

So, I was interested in these two rollers,

and I actually wanted more, so I borrowed another mouse from a friend --

ನನಗೆ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ರೋಲರ್‌ಗಳು ಬೇಕಾದ ಕಾರಣ ನನ್ನ ಗೆಳೆಯನ ಬಳಿಯಿಂದ ಮೌಸ್ ತಂದೆನು

never returned to him --

ಆದರೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಿಸಿಲ್ಲ!

and I now had four rollers.

ಮತ್ತು ಈಗ ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ನಾಲ್ಕು ರೋಲರ್‌ಗಳು ಇವೆ.

Interestingly, what I did with these rollers is,

basically, I took them off of these mouses and then put them in one line.

It had some strings and pulleys and some springs.

What I got is basically a gesture-interface device

So, here, whatever movement I do in my physical world

is actually replicated inside the digital world

just using this small device that I made, around eight years back,

in 2000.

Because I was interested in integrating these two worlds,

I thought of sticky notes.

I thought, "Why can I not connect

the normal interface of a physical sticky note

to the digital world?"

ಗಣಕ ವಿಶ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ವರ್ಗಾಯಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲವೇ ಎಂದು.

A message written on a sticky note to my mom,

ಒಂದು ಸಂದೇಶವನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ತಾಯಿ ಸ್ಟಿಕ್ಕಿ ಟಿಪ್ಪಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ಬರೆದರೆ

on paper,

ಅದೂ ಕಾಗದದಲ್ಲಿ

can come to an SMS,

ಅದು ನನ್ನ ಜಂಗಮವಾಣಿಗೆ ಸಂದೇಶವಾಗಿ ಬರಬಹುದೇ?

or maybe a meeting reminder

ಅಥವಾ ಸಭೆಯ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಜ್ಞಾಪನ

automatically syncs with my digital calendar --

ನನ್ನ ಗಣಕ ಪಂಚಾಂಗ ಸ್ವಚಾಲಿತವಾಗಿ ವಿನಿಮಯವಾಗುವಂತೆ

a to-do list that automatically syncs with you.

ಒಂದು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯು ನಿಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಗಣಕಕ್ಕೆ ವಿನಿಮಯವಾಗಬೇಕು.

But you can also search in the digital world,

ಇಷ್ಟು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ ಗಣಕ ವಿಶ್ವದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹುಡುಕಬಹುದು ಸಹ

or maybe you can write a query, saying,

ಅಥವಾ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಧ್ವನಿಯ ಮೂಲಕವೂ ಉತ್ತರ ಹುಡುಕಬಹುದು

"What is Dr. Smith's address?"

"ಡಾ|ಸ್ಮಿತ್‌ರವರ ವಿಳಾಸವೇನು?"

and this small system actually prints it out --

ಮತ್ತು ಗಣಕ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಉತ್ತರಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿ ಮುದ್ರಿಸಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ

so it actually acts like a paper input-output system,

just made out of paper.

In another exploration,

I thought of making a pen that can draw in three dimensions.

ಒಂದು ಮೂರು ಆಯಾಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುವ ಲೇಖನಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಯೋಚಿಸಿದೆ.

So, I implemented this pen that can help designers and architects

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾದೆ ಸಹ

ಇದು ವಿನ್ಯಾಸಗಾರರಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯಕವಾದುದಾಗಿದೆ

not only think in three dimensions,

Then I thought, "Why not make a Google Map,

but in the physical world?"

Rather than typing a keyword to find something,

I put my objects on top of it.

ಆ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಗಣಕದ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಡುವಂತಹುದು.

If I put a boarding pass, it will show me where the flight gate is.

ನಾನು ಒಂದು ಬೋರ್ಡಿಂಗ್ ಪಾಸ್ ಅನ್ನು ಗಣಕದ ಮೇಲಿಟ್ಟಾಗ ಅದು ವಿಮಾನ ಯಾವ ಗೇಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

A coffee cup will show where you can find more coffee,

ಒಂದು ಕಾಫೀ ಕಪ್‌ನ್ನು ಮೇಲಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ದೊರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ,

or where you can trash the cup.

ಅಥವಾ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕಾಫೀ ಕಪ್‌ನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಎಸೆಯಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಮಾಹಿತಿಯೂ ಲಭ್ಯ.

So, these were some of the earlier explorations I did

ಇವೆಲ್ಲಾ ನನ್ನ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕೆಲವು ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಗಳು. ಆದರೆ...

because the goal was to connect these two worlds seamlessly.

ನನ್ನ ನಿಜವಾದ ಗುರಿ ಈ ಎರಡು ವಿಶ್ವಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊನೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಸೇರಿಸುವುದು.

Among all these experiments,

ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ

there was one thing in common:

I was trying to bring a part of the physical world

ನಾನು ಭೌತಿಕ ವಿಶ್ವವನ್ನು ಡಿಜಿಟಲ್ ವಿಶ್ವದ ಒಂದು ಭಾಗವಾಗಿ ತರಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ.

to the digital world.

ನಾನು ಕೆಲವು ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಅವುಗಳ ಭಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ಈಗ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ.

I was taking some part of the objects,

or any of the intuitiveness of real life,

ಅಥವಾ ನಮ್ಮ ನಿಜ ಜೀವನದ ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ ಅಂತರ್ಬೋಧ ಶಕ್ತಿ,

and bringing them to the digital world,

ಮತ್ತು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಗಣಕ ವಿಶ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ತರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ,

because the goal was to make our computing interfaces more intuitive.

But then I realized that we humans are not actually interested in computing.

What we are interested in is information.

We want to know about things.

We want to know about dynamic things going around.

So I thought, around last year -- in the beginning of the last year --

I started thinking, "Why can I not take this approach in the reverse way?"

ನಾನು ಯೋಚಿಸಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ " ನಾನೇಕೆ ಇದರ ವ್ಯತಿರಿಕ್ತ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದನ್ನು ತಲುಪಬಾರದು" ಎಂದು

Maybe, "How about I take my digital world

and paint the physical world with that digital information?"

Why can I not remove this confine

and take that to my everyday objects, everyday life

so that I don't need to learn the new language

for interacting with those pixels?

So, in order to realize this dream,

ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಕನಸನ್ನು ನನಸಾಗಿಸಲು

I actually thought of putting a big-size projector on my head.

ನಾನು ಬಹಳ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪ್ರೊಜೆಕ್ಟರ್ ಒಂದನ್ನು ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಯೋಚಿಸಿದೆ.

I think that's why this is called a head-mounted projector, isn't it?

I took it very literally,

Here, I'm taking a part of a document,

and putting over here a second part from a second place,

So I'm excited about how I can bring the technology to the masses
