Hello, everyone. Because this is my first time at TED,

ئەو ٥۰ ساڵە. بەڵام بۆ هەمیشە بە گەنجی ئەمێنێتەوە.

I've decided to bring along an old friend

(پێکەنین)

هەروەها ئەمەوێت کەسێکی ترتان پێ بناسێنم

to help break the ice a bit.

لەوانەیە دەموچاوێکی نەناسراو بێت.

Yes. That's right. This is Barbie.

ئەمە فولایە. فولا دەرخەری جیهانی عەرەبیە بۆ باڕبی.

She's 50 years old. And she's looking as young as ever.

(Laughter)

ئێستا،

But I'd also like to introduce you to

what may be an unfamiliar face.

باڕبی و فولا نیشتەجێی دوو زەوی تەواو جیاوازن.

This is Fulla. Fulla is the Arab world's answer to Barbie.

ئارەزووی جیاوازیان هەیە. نرخی جیاوازی خۆیان هەیە.

ئایە هەرگیز ڕێک دەکەون ...

Now, according to proponents of the clash of civilizations,

باشە، با من پێتان بڵێم، ئەوە دەربارەی جوان دەرکەوتن نیە.

Barbie and Fulla occupy these completely separate spheres.

ئەزمونی من، هەرچەندە، لە جیهانی عەرەبی زۆر جیاوازە.

They have different interests. They have divergent values.

لەو شوێنەی کارم ئەکرد، لە هەرێمی عەرەبی،

And should they ever come in contact ...

خەڵکی سەرقاڵی ڕێگاکانی ڕۆژئاوا بوون

وە گۆڕینان بۆ ئەو شتانەی کە حەزیان لێیە

well, I've got to tell you, it's just not going to be pretty.

کە نە لاسایکردنەوەی هەمان شتی ڕۆژئاوا بوو،

My experience, however, in the Islamic world is very different.

نە وەکو دەستوری کۆنی ئیسلام.

ئەمەوێ دوو نمونەتان نیشان دەم.

Where I work, in the Arab region,

یەکەمیان فۆڕ شەبابه.

people are busy taking up Western innovations

واتا “بۆ گەنجان” ئەوە کەناڵێکی نوێی عەرەبیە.

and changing them into things

which are neither conventionally Western,

(ڤیدیۆ): ڤیدیۆ کلیپەکانی سەرانسەری جیهان.

nor are they traditionally Islamic.

ویلایەتە یەکگرتوەکانی ئەمەریکا.

I want to show you two examples.

من ناترسم لە تەنهایی

The first is 4Shbab.

It means "for youth" and it's a new Arab TV channel.

من ناترسم لە تەنهایی، ئەگەر خوام هەبێت

(Video): Video clips from across the globe.

من ناترسم لە تەنهایی

The USA.

هەموو شتێک باش ئەبێت

♫ I am not afraid to stand alone ♫

من ناترسم لە تەنهایی

جیهانی عەرەبی

♫ I am not afraid to stand alone, if Allah is by my side ♫

♫ I am not afraid to stand alone ♫

♫ Everything will be all right ♫

♫ I am not afraid to stand alone ♫

The Arab world.

ئەو پارێزراوە بەهۆی بێ فیزی ئاینەکەوە

ڕازێنراوەتەوە بە نوری قورئان

♫ She was preserved by modesty of the religion ♫

شیرین ئەل فاکی: بۆ گەنجان بانگێشتی Mtv ئیسلامی دەکات.

♫ She was adorned by the light of the Quran ♫

دەرهێنەری، بەرهەمهێنەری تەلەڤزیۆنی میسڕیە

بە ئەحمەد ئەبو هەیوب بانگ ئەکرێت،

دەیەوێ هەستی گەنجەکان بجوڵێێ

بەهۆی ئیسلامەوە بۆ ژیانێکی جوانتر.

Shereen El Feki: 4Shbab has been dubbed Islamic MTV.

بڕوای وایە باشترین پەیام بۆ ئەوە

بەکارهێنانی جەماوەرێکی زۆر بۆ گەیاندنی ڤیدیۆ میوزیکەکانی.

Its creator, who is an Egyptian TV producer

called Ahmed Abu Haïba,

بۆ گەنجان دامەزرێنرا وەکو جێگرەوەیەک

wants young people to be inspired

by Islam to lead better lives.

بۆ هەبونی میوزیکی عەرەبی لە کەناڵەکان

وەکو شتێکی لەم شێوەیە.

He reckons the best way to get that message across

(مۆسیقا)

is to use the enormously popular medium of music videos.

4Shbab was set up as an alternative

to existing Arab music channels.

کە، بەو بۆنەیەوە ئەوە هەیفا وەهبیە. ئەستێرەیەکی پۆپی لوبنانیە

And they look something like this.

و کچێکی سەرکەوتووی عەرەبە.

(Music)

لە جیهانی گەنجاندا، ئەمە دەربارەی کۆسپ و بەربەست نییە.

دەربارەی ئاگر و گۆگردیس نییە.

That, by the way is Haifa Wehbe. She's a Lebanese pop star

پە ڤیدیۆکاندا نیازی نیشاندانی

جوانتر، ڕووخسارێکی باشتری ئیسلامە،

and pan-Arab pin-up girl.

بۆ خەڵکی لاو تا مامەڵە لەگەڵ ئالەنگارییەکانی ژیان بکەن.

In the world of 4Shbab, it's not about bump and grind.

ئێستا، نمونەی دووەمم کەمتر بۆ گەنجەکانە.

But it's not about fire and brimstone either.

ئەویش ناوی” نەوەدوو نۆیە.”

Its videos are intended to show

a kinder, gentler face of Islam,

ئێستا، ئەوانە لە یەکەمین پاڵەوانەکانی جیهانی عەڕەبین

for young people to deal with life's challenges.

دروستکراون لەلایەن دەروناسی کوەیتی

بەناوی نێیڤ ئەل موتەوا.

Now, my second example is for a slightly younger crowd.

ویستی ئەوە بوو ئیسلام ڕزگار بکات

And it's called "The 99."

لەو وێنە ناهەموارە،

هەمووی لە منداڵێکی فۆڕماتدا.

Now, these are the world's first Islamic superheroes.

They were created by a Kuwaiti psychologist

” ٩٩.” ئەکتەرەکان مەبەستیان بەرجەستەکردنی

called Naif Al Mutawa.

هەر ٩٩ تایبەتمەندیەکەی خودایە:

And his desire is to rescue Islam

دادپەروەر، ژیر، میهرەبان، ئەوانەی تریش.

from images of intolerance,

all in a child-friendly format.

کەواتە، بۆ نمونە، کەسایەتی نورامان هەیە.

"The 99." The characters are meant to embody

ئەو وا دەردەکەوێ کە ئەو هێزەی هەیە

the 99 attributes of Allah:

کە ناخی کەسەکان ئەبینێت

باشی وو خراپی هەمووان ئەبینێت.

justice, wisdom, mercy, among others.

کەسایەتیەکی تر بەناوی جەیمی

So, for example, there is the character of Noora.

توانای دروستکردنی داهێنانی سەرسورهێنەری هەیە.

She is meant to have the power

ئێستا، “٩٩” تەنها کتێبێکی کۆمیدی نیە.

to look inside people

ئێستا وتارێکە بۆخۆی.

and see the good and bad in everyone.

ئەنیمەیشنێک لە کارکردندایە.

Another character called Jami

و لە ساڵی داهاتوو،

has the ability to create fantastic inventions.

نموونەی وەک سوپەرمان و وۆندەر وۆمەن

تواناکانیان یەک دەخەن لەگەڵ “٩٩”

Now, "The 99" is not just a comic book.

تا دژی نادادگەری بوەستنەوە لە هەر شوێنێک بێت.

It's now a theme park.

There is an animated series in the works.

And by this time next year,

“٩٩” و بۆ گەنجان تەنها دوو نمونەن

the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman

بۆ ئەو کلتورە هەمە چەشنەی ئیسلامی.

will have joined forces with "The 99"

to beat injustice wherever they find it.

ئێمە لێرە باسی شەڕی شارستانییەت ناکەین.

و نە جۆرێکی جیاکردنەوەی بڕوشە.

"The 99" and 4Shbab are just two of many examples

دەمەوێ وابیری لێبکەمەوە کە تۆڕێکی شارستانییەتە،

of this sort of Islamic cross-cultural hybridization.

کە تیایدا کەنارەکانی کلتوری جیا بەیەکەوە بەستراونەتەوە.

We're not talking here about a clash of civilizations.

ئێستا، کاتێک گەنجەکان و “٩٩” نوێ و گەشاوە دەردەکەون

Nor is it some sort of indistinguishable mash.

لەڕاستیدا دابونەریتێکی درێژ هەیە بۆ ئەمە.

I like to think of it as a mesh of civilizations,

لە مێژووەوە، ئیسلام لە شارستانییەتەکانی تر شتی وەرگرتووە

in which the strands of different cultures are intertwined.

هەم کۆن و هەمیش نوێ.

Now, while 4Shbab and "The 99" may look new and shiny,

دوای هەمووشتێک، ئەمە قورئانە هانمان دەدات ئەمە بکەین:

there is actually a very long tradition of this.

Throughout its history, Islam has borrowed and adapted from other civilizations

“ئێمە ئێوەمان وەک نەتەوە و هۆز دروستکردووە

تاوەکو ئێوە لە یەکترییەوە شت فێرببن.”

وە بۆ خۆم، ئەمانە وشانێکی زۆر ژیر،

both ancient and modern.

After all, it's the Quran which encourages us to do this:

گرنگ نییە بیروباوەڕەکەت هەرچییەک بێت. سوپاستان دەکەم.

(چەپڵەڕێزان)

"We made you into nations and tribes

so that you could learn from one another."

And to my mind, those are pretty wise words,

no matter what your creed. Thank you.
