Shereen El Feki: Pop culture in the Arab world

Hello, everyone. Because this is my first time at TED,

I've decided to bring along an old friend

بڕیارمدا لەگەڵ هاوڕێیەکی کۆنم دا بێم

to help break the ice a bit.

تاکو هاوکارم بێت و کەمێک شرمم بشکێت.

Yes. That's right. This is Barbie.

بەڵی. وایە. ئەوە باربییە.

She's 50 years old. And she's looking as young as ever.

تەمەنی ٥٠ ساڵە. هەروەها ئەو ئێستاش هەر گەنجە.

(Laughter)

But I'd also like to introduce you to

بەڵا، حەزم دەکەم بتان ناسێنم بە ڕوخسارێک

what may be an unfamiliar face.

کە ڕەنگە نامۆ بێت بۆتان.

This is Fulla. Fulla is the Arab world's answer to Barbie.

ئەوە فوڵایە. فوڵا وەڵامی جیهانی عەرەبیە بۆ باربی.

Now, according to proponents of the clash of civilizations,

ئێستا، بە پێ لایەنگرانی ململانێی شارستانیەتەکان،

Barbie and Fulla occupy these completely separate spheres.

باربی و فوڵا ناوچە جیاوازەکانیان بە تەواوی داگیر کردوە.

They have different interests. They have divergent values.

حەز و ئارەزووی جیاوازیان هەیە. ڕێچکەی تایبەتیان هەیە.

And should they ever come in contact ...

هەروەها قەت پێویست دەکات پەیوەندیان هەبێت...

well, I've got to tell you, it's just not going to be pretty.

باشە، دەبێت پێتان بڵێم، ئەوە شتێکی باش نابێت.

My experience, however, in the Islamic world is very different.

هەر چەندە ئەزموونی من لە جیهانی ئیسلامیدا زۆر جیاوازە.

Where I work, in the Arab region,

لە هەرێمی عەرەبی، ئەو شوێنەی کاری لێ دەکەم،

people are busy taking up Western innovations

خەڵک مەشغوڵی وەرگرتنی داهێنانەکانی خۆرئاوان

and changing them into things

و دەیان گۆڕن بۆ شتانێک

which are neither conventionally Western,

کە نە پەیوەندی بە خۆرئاواوە هەیە،

nor are they traditionally Islamic.

نە بە کلتوری ئیسلام.

I want to show you two examples.

دەمەوێت دوو نموونەتان نیشان بدەم.

The first is 4Shbab.

یەکەم دانەیان 4Shbab ە.

It means "for youth" and it's a new Arab TV channel.

کەناڵێکی نوێی عەرەبییە و بە مانای" بۆ لاوان'' دێت.

The USA.

ئەمریکا.

The Arab world.

♫ She was adorned by the light of the Quran ♫

Shereen El Feki: 4Shbab has been dubbed Islamic MTV.

4Shbab بووە پێشەنگی کەنەڵی مۆسیقای ئیسلام.

Its creator, who is an Egyptian TV producer

دەرهێنەرەکەی، کە دەرهێنەرێکی میسڕیە

called Ahmed Abu Haïba,

ناوی ئەحمەد ئەبو هەیبا، یە

wants young people to be inspired

دەیەوێت گەنجەکان بەرەو

by Islam to lead better lives.

ئیسلام ڕێنوێنی بکات بۆ ژیانێکی باشتر.

He reckons the best way to get that message across

ئەو پێیوابو باشترین ڕێگە بۆ گەیاندنی

is to use the enormously popular medium of music videos.

پەیامەکە بریتییە لە بەکارهێنانی بەناوبانگترین ڤیدیۆ کلیپەکان.

4Shbab was set up as an alternative

4Shbab وەک جێگرەوەیەک بۆ

to existing Arab music channels.

کەناڵە مۆسیقاکانی عەرەب دامەزرا.

And they look something like this.

ئەوانیش سەری شتێکی لەوە شێوەیە دەکەن.

That, by the way is Haifa Wehbe. She's a Lebanese pop star

بەو بۆنەیەوە ئەوە هەیفا وەهبیە ئەستێرەی پۆپی لوبنانیە

and pan-Arab pin-up girl.

کچێکی سەرنجڕاکێشی عەرەبە.

In the world of 4Shbab, it's not about bump and grind.

لە کەناڵی 4Shbab، بابەتەکە بێ مانا نییە.

بەڵام دەربارەی ئاگر خۆش کردن و ئاژاوەش نییە.

But it's not about fire and brimstone either.

Its videos are intended to show

ئامانجانی ئەو ڤیدیۆیانە دەرخستنی

a kinder, gentler face of Islam,

ڕوخساری نەرمونیانی و جوامێرانەی ئیسلامە،

for young people to deal with life's challenges.

بۆ ئەوەی گەنجەکان لەگەڵ ئاڵەنگیەکانی ژیان ڕابێن.

Now, my second example is for a slightly younger crowd.

ئێستا، نموونەی دووەمم بۆ کۆمەڵەیەکی بچووکە.

And it's called "The 99."

پێ دەگوترێت ''٩٩''

Now, these are the world's first Islamic superheroes.

ئێستا ئەوان لە یەکەمین پاڵەوانەکانی جیهانی ئیسلامین.

They were created by a Kuwaiti psychologist

لە لایەن سایکۆلۆجیستێکی کوەیتی دروست کراوە

called Naif Al Mutawa.

بە ناوی نايف المطوع.

And his desire is to rescue Islam

هەروەها ویستویەتی ئیسلام لەو

from images of intolerance,

وێنە شەڕانگێزەکان ڕزگار بکات،

all in a child-friendly format.

بە ڕێگەیەکی ئاسان بۆ منداڵان.

"The 99." The characters are meant to embody

کارێکتەرەکانی''٩٩' دەرخەری

the 99 attributes of Allah:

٩٩ ناوەکەی الله ن:

justice, wisdom, mercy, among others.

لە ناویاندا دادپەروەر، زانا، لێبوردەیی.

So, for example, there is the character of Noora.

بۆ نمو,نە لێرە کارێکتەری نوورە هەیە.

She is meant to have the power

دەیویست وا خۆی دەرخات کە هێزی

to look inside people

سەیرکردنی ناخی مرۆڤەکانی هەیە

and see the good and bad in everyone.

هەروەها باش و خراپی لە هەموو کەسێکدا ببینێت.

Another character called Jami

کارێکتەرێکی تر بە ناوی جێمی

has the ability to create fantastic inventions.

توانای دروست کردنی داهێنانە ناوازەکانی هەیە.

Now, "The 99" is not just a comic book.

ئێستا''٩٩'' بەتەنها پەرتوکێکی پێکەنیاوی نییە.

It's now a theme park.

بەڵکو ئێستا شاری یاری منداڵانە.

There is an animated series in the works.

زنجیرەیەکی ئەنیمەیشنیشیان بەڕێوەیە.

And by this time next year,

هەروەها ساڵێکی تر لەم کاتەدا،

the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman

وەکو سوپەرمان و ئافرەتی نامۆ

will have joined forces with "The 99"

بەشداری لە هێزی ''٩٩'' دەکەن

to beat injustice wherever they find it.

لە هەر شوێنێک ناداپەروەری ببینن لەناوی دەبەن.

کەنەاڵی 4Shbab و ٩٩ تەنها دوو لەو نموونە زۆرەی

"The 99" and 4Shbab are just two of many examples

of this sort of Islamic cross-cultural hybridization.

جۆری تێکەڵکردنی ڕۆشنبیری ئیسلامینە.

We're not talking here about a clash of civilizations.

ئێمە باس لە توندوتیژی و ململانێی نێوان کلتورەکان ناکەین.

Nor is it some sort of indistinguishable mash.

نە جۆرە ناڕوونیە تێکەڵاوەکانیشیان.

I like to think of it as a mesh of civilizations,

دەمەوێت وەک تێکەڵ کردنێکی نێوان شارستانیەتەکان بیری لێ بکەمەوە،

in which the strands of different cultures are intertwined.

کە بەسەر چەند لقێکی جۆراوجۆری کلتوردا دابەش کراوە.

Now, while 4Shbab and "The 99" may look new and shiny,

ئێستا، لە کاتێکدا کەناڵی 4Shbab و ''٩٩'' ڕەنگە نوێ و نایاب بن،

there is actually a very long tradition of this.

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا ماوەیەکی زۆرە هەنە.

Throughout its history, Islam has borrowed and adapted from other civilizations

ئیسلام بە درێژایی مێژوو شارستانییەکانی تری وەرگرتوون

both ancient and modern.

کۆن و تازە.

After all, it's the Quran which encourages us to do this:

لە کۆتاییدا، ئەوە قورئانە کە هانمان دەدات ئەوە بکەین:

"We made you into nations and tribes

ئێوەمان لە هۆز و نەتەوەی جیاوز'' دروست کردوە

so that you could learn from one another."

بۆیە دەتوانن شت لە یەکتر فێربن''.

And to my mind, those are pretty wise words,

بە بڕوای من، ئەوانە وشە گەلێکی زۆر ناوازەنە،

no matter what your creed. Thank you.

بۆم گرینگ نییە کە تۆ چ باوەڕێکت هەیە. سوپاس.
