我嚟哩度係想畀大家睇下

how something you can't see can be so much fun to look at.

嗰啲你平時睇唔到嘅嘢 點樣可以好有趣

and exciting technology that's going to make us rethink

how we waterproof our lives.

What I have here is a cinder block

哩度我有塊煤渣磚

that we've coated half with a nanotechnology spray

哩塊磚半邊搽咗納米噴霧

that can be applied to almost any material.

哩種噴霧可以用喺任何物料上

It's called Ultra-Ever Dry,

叫做「超乾燥保護漆」

and when you apply it to any material,

當你噴佢喺任何物料上面

it turns into a superhydrophobic shield.

就會形成一層超跣水保護膜

So this is a cinder block, uncoated,

煤磚嘅另一邊無噴過噴霧

and you can see that it's porous, it absorbs water.

你可以睇到 磚一邊有窿、可以滲透、吸水

Not anymore.

另一邊就唔同啦

Porous, nonporous.

哩邊可滲透，哩邊不可滲透

So what's superhydrophobic?

咁超跣水係咩嘢呢？

Superhydrophobic is how we measure

一件物件跣唔跣水，要睇佢上面嘅水滴

a drop of water on a surface.

The rounder it is, the more hydrophobic it is,

滴水越圓，物件就越跣水

and if it's really round, it's superhydrophobic.

如果滴水真係圓形嘅話，咁就係超跣水

A freshly waxed car, the water molecules slump

一架車啱啱打完蠟，上面嘅水分子 跌落嚟就大約 90 度

to about 90 degrees.

A windshield coating is going to give you about 110 degrees.

喺擋風玻璃上面就大約 110 度

But what you're seeing here is 160 to 175 degrees,

但係你喺哩度見到嘅 就有 160 度至 175 度

and anything over 150 is superhydrophobic.

而任何超過 150 度嘅，就係超跣水

So as part of the demonstration,

為咗展示一樣嘢

what I have is a pair of gloves,

我哩度有一對手套

and we've coated one of the gloves

其中一隻搽咗納米噴霧

with the nanotechnology coating,

and let's see if you can tell which one,

大家可唔可以分得出 邊隻搽咗納米噴霧？

and I'll give you a hint.

我畀啲提示你哋

Did you guess the one that was dry?

估唔估到邊隻係乾嘅？

When you have nanotechnology and nanoscience,

當我哋有納米技術同納米科學嘅時候

what's occurred is that we're able to now

我哋就能夠睇見同真正控制原子同分子

look at atoms and molecules and actually control them

for great benefits.

令生活更加便利

And we're talking really small here.

我哋講緊嘅層面真係好細

The way you measure nanotechnology is in nanometers,

納米技術講緊嘅單位係納米

and one nanometer is a billionth of a meter,

一納米即係十億分之一米

and to put some scale to that,

用比例表示嘅話

if you had a nanoparticle that was one nanometer thick,

當你有好多個一納米厚嘅納米粒子

and you put it side by side, and you had 50,000 of them,

你將佢一個個咁排起 總共有 50,000 個

you'd be the width of a human hair.

咁就有一條人類頭髮咁粗

So very small, but very useful.

所以係非常細小，但係非常有用

And it's not just water that this works with.

唔單止用嚟防水

It's a lot of water-based materials like concrete,

仲可以防其他水性物料

例如混凝土、水性塗料、泥漿

water-based paint,

mud,

and also some refined oils as well.

You can see the difference.

Moving onto the next demonstration,

而家示範下一個

we've taken a pane of glass and we've coated the outside of it,

我哋搵咗一塊玻璃

喺玻璃四邊搽納米塗層

we've framed it with the nanotechnology coating,

好似保護玻璃嘅四邊咁樣

and we're going to pour this green-tinted water inside the middle,

我哋倒淺綠色嘅水落去中間

and you're going to see, it's going to spread out on glass

你會見到液體喺玻璃上面散開

like you'd normally think it would,

就好似你平時嘅認知咁

except when it hits the coating, it stops,

只係當水接觸到塗層時，水會停止擴散

and I can't even coax it to leave.

甚至用手都唔能夠潑走

It's that afraid of the water.

塗料排斥水份成咁

So what's going on here? What's happening?

究竟點解會咁呢？發生咩事呢？

Well, the surface of the spray coating

其實，哩個噴霧塗層嘅表面 鋪滿咗納米粒子

is actually filled with nanoparticles

that form a very rough and craggly surface.

哩啲粒子形成一層非常粗糙嘅凹凸表面

You'd think it'd be smooth, but it's actually not.

你覺得佢好光滑，但實際上唔係

And it has billions of interstitial spaces,

佢有幾十億個罅隙

and those spaces, along with the nanoparticles,

而哩啲罅隙同納米粒子鎖住空氣分子

reach up and grab the air molecules,

and cover the surface with air.

令到表面覆蓋著空氣

It's an umbrella of air all across it,

好似有把空氣保護傘咁

and that layer of air is what the water hits,

水、泥、水泥碰到哩層空氣之後 即刻滑落嚟

the mud hits, the concrete hits, and it glides right off.

So if I put this inside this water here,

所以如果我將哩個放入水裡面

you can see a silver reflective coating around it,

你會見到表面有一層銀色反光塗層

and that silver reflective coating

哩層銀色反光塗層就係防水嘅空氣層

is the layer of air that's protecting the water

from touching the paddle, and it's dry.

令到水接觸唔到槳，槳就可以保持乾爽

So what are the applications?

咁有咩嘢應用呢？

I mean, many of you right now are probably going through your head.

我估大家依家都諗繄哩個問題

Everyone that sees this gets excited, and says,

每個人睇見哩項技術都會好興奮

"Oh, I could use it for this and this and this."

然後講︰「噢，我可以用佢嚟做 哩樣、哩樣、哩樣」

The applications in a general sense

一般嚟講

could be anything that's anti-wetting.

塗料可以應用喺任何唔濕得嘅嘢

We've certainly seen that today.

塗料除咗做到防水之外

It could be anything that's anti-icing,

可以防結冰

because if you don't have water, you don't have ice.

因為你無水，你就無冰

It could be anti-corrosion.

佢亦可以防腐蝕

No water, no corrosion.

因為無水，無腐蝕

It could be anti-bacterial.

仲可以防菌

Without water, the bacteria won't survive.

細菌唔可以喺無水嘅情況下生存

And it could be things that need to be self-cleaning as well.

亦可以用喺需要自動清洗嘅物件上

So imagine how something like this

所以，想像一下類似嘅發明

could help revolutionize your field of work.

And I'm going to leave you with one last demonstration,
