Boniface Mwangi: The day I stood up alone

People back home call me a heckler,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ အိမ်မှာ ကျွန်တော့ကို ကတ်သီးကတ်သတ် ဝေဖန်သူ၊

a troublemaker, an irritant,

ဒုက္ခပေးသူ၊ ကသိကအောက်ဖြစ်အောင်လုပ်သူ၊

a rebel, an activist,

ပုန်ကန်သူ၊ တက်ကြွသူ၊

the voice of the people.

လူတွေရဲ့ အသံကို တင်ပြသူဆိုပြီး ခေါ်ကြပါတယ်။

But that wasn't always me.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်တော် အမြဲတမ်း အဲဒါမျိုး မဟုတ်ခဲ့ဘူး။

Growing up, I had a nickname.

ကြီးပြင်လာတာနဲ့အမျှ၊ ကျွန်တော့ဆီမှာ အမည်ပြောင် ရှိလာပါတယ်။

They used to call me Softy,

သူတို့ဟာ ကျွန်တော့ကို Softy လို့ ခေါ်လာကြတယ်၊

meaning the soft, harmless boy.

ပျော့ပြောင်းသူ၊ ဒုက္ခမပေးသူလို့ ဆိုလိုပါတယ်။

Like every other human being, I avoided trouble.

ကျန်လူတွေလိုပဲ ကျွန်တော်ကလည်း ပြဿနာတွေကို ရှောင်ရှားခဲ့ပါတယ်။

In my childhood, they taught me silence.

ကျွန်တော် ငယ်တုန်းက၊ သူတို့အားလုံးက ငြိမ်နေရန် သင်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

Don't argue, do as you're told.

ငြင်းခုန် မနေဘဲ ပြောတဲ့အတိုင်း လုပ်ပါ။

In Sunday school, they taught me don't confront, don't argue,

တနင်္ဂနွေကျောင်းမှာဆိုရင် သူတို့က ထိပ်တိုက် မရင်ဆိုင်နဲ့၊ မငြင်းခုန်နဲ့၊

even if you're right, turn the other cheek.

မင်းကမှန်တောင်၊ ကိုယ့်ရဲ့ နောက်ပါးကိုပါ ခံပေးပါ။

This was reinforced by the political climate of the time.

အဲဒီတုန်းက နိုင်ငံရေး အခြေအနေက အဲဒါကို အာဖြည့်ပေးခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Kenya is a country where you are guilty

ကင်ညာနိုင်ငံမှာဆိုရင် ကိုယ့်ကိုကိုယ် ချမ်းသာသူ ဖြစ်တာကို

until proven rich.

သက်သေထူ မပြနိုင်သရွေ့ အပြစ်ရှိသူပါ။

Kenya's poor are five times more likely

ကင်ညာနိုင်ငံထဲက ဆင်းရဲသူတို့ဟာ

ရာဇဝတ်ကောင်တွေရဲ့ လက်ချက်ကြောင့်ထက်ကို

to be shot dead by the police who are meant to protect them

than by criminals.

ပုလိပ်ရဲ့ လက်ချက်ြဖင့် ပစ်ခံရဖို့များပါတယ်။

This was reinforced by the political climate of the day.

အဲဒီတုန်းက နိုင်ငံရေး အခြေအနေက အဲဒါကို အာဖြည့်ပေးခဲ့ပါတယ်။

We had a president, Moi, who was a dictator.

ကျွန်တော်ဆီမှာ Moi ဆိုတဲ့ သမ္မတရှိခဲ့ရာ အာဏာရှင် ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

He ruled the country with an iron fist,

သူဟာ နိုင်ငံကို သံလက်သီးဖြင့် အုပ်ချုပ်ခဲ့တယ်၊

and anyone who dared question his authority

ပြီးတော့ သူ့အာဏာကို မေးခွန်းထုတ်ဖို့ ကြိုးစားခဲ့သူ မှန်သမျှဟာ

was arrested, tortured, jailed or even killed.

ဖမ်းချုပ်ခြင်း၊ ညှင်းပန်းခြင်း၊ ထောင်ချခြင်း၊ ခံခဲ့ရကြတယ်၊

ဒါမှမဟုတ် အသတ်ခံခဲ့ကြရတယ်။

That meant that people were taught to be smart cowards, stay out of trouble.

ဒီတော့ လူတွေကို ငကြောက်ကောင်တွေ ဖြစ်ကြရန်၊

Being a coward was not an insult.

ကြောက်နေခဲ့ခြင်းကို အပြစ် မတင်ခဲ့ကြဘူး။

Being a coward was a compliment.

ငကြောက်ဖြစ်ခြင်းဟာ ချီးကျူးမှု ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

We used to be told that a coward goes home to his mother.

ကြောက်သူဟာ ကိုယ့်မိခင်အိမ်မှာ သွားနေသူလို့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဆိုခဲ့ကြတယ်။

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်က ပြဿနာကို ရှောင်နေရင်

What that meant: that if you stayed out of trouble you're going to stay alive.

အသက်ရှင် ကျန်ခဲ့မှာကို ဆိုလိုတယ်။

I used to question this advice,

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ အဲဒီလို အကြံပေးမှုကို မေးခွန်းထုတ်ခဲ့သူပါ၊

and eight years ago we had an election in Kenya,

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ရှစ်နှစ်တုန်းက ကင်ညာနိုင်ငံမှာ ရွေးကောက်ပွဲ ပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်၊

and the results were violently disputed.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ရလဒ်တွေကို ကြမ်းတမ်းစွာ ချိုးဖောက်ခံခဲ့ရပါတယ်။

What followed that election was terrible violence, rape,

အဲဒီ ရွေးကောက်ပွဲ နောက်မှာ၊ အကြမ်းဖက်မှုတွေ၊ ဖျက်လိုဖျက်ဆီးမှုတွေ၊

and the killing of over 1,000 people.

လူတွေ ၁၀၀၀ ကျော် အသတ်ခံရမှုတွေ ရင်ဆိုင်လာခဲ့ရတယ်။

My work was to document the violence.

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ အဲဒီလို အကြမ်ဖက်မှုတွေကို မှတ်ပုံတင်ခဲ့သူပါ။

As a photographer, I took thousands of images,

ဓာတ်ပုံဆရာ တဦးအနေနဲ့ ကျွန်တော် ရိုက်ခဲ့တဲ့ ပုံတွေထောင်ချီပါ၊

and after two months,

အဲဒီနောက် နှစ်လအကြာမှာ၊

the two politicians came together, had a cup of tea,

နိုင်ငံရေးသမား နှစ်ဦးတို့ဟာ အတူတူ ထိုင်လျက် လဘက်ရည် သောက်ခဲ့ကြကာ၊

signed a peace agreement, and the country moved on.

ငြိမ်းချမ်းရေးကို ချုပ်ဆိုခဲ့ကြလို့ နိုင်ငံဟာ ရှေ့ကို တက်လှမ်းနိုင်ခဲ့တယ်။

I was a very disturbed man because I saw the violence firsthand.

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ အကြမ်းဖက်မှုတွေကို ကိုယ်တွေ့မြင်ခဲ့ရလို့ စိတ်ညစ်နေခဲ့ရတယ်။

I saw the killings. I saw the displacement.

လူတွေ အသတ်ခံနေကြရတာ အိမ်ယာတွေကို စွန့်ပြေးနေရတာ မြင်ခဲ့ရတယ်။

I met women who had been raped, and it disturbed me,

မုဒိမ်းကျင့် ခံခဲ့ရတဲ့ အမျိုးသမီးတွေကို ကျွန်တော်တွေ့ခဲ့ရရာ သိပ်ကို စိတ်ညစ်ခဲ့ရပေမဲ့၊

but the country never spoke about it.

နိုင်ငံဟာ အဲဒါကို ဘယ်တော့မှ မပြောရဲခဲ့ပါ။

We pretended. We all became smart cowards.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ မမြင်ချင်ယောင် ဆောင်နေခဲ့ကြတယ်။

ကျွန်တော်တို့ အားလုံး ငကြောက်တွေ ဖြစ်လာကြတယ်။

We decided to stay out of trouble and not talk about it.

ပြဿနာနဲ့ ဝေးအောင် နေရန်၊ အဲဒီအကြောင်း မပြောရန် ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့ကြတယ်။

Ten months later, I quit my job. I said I could not stand it anymore.

ဆယ်လ ကြာတော့ ကျွန်တော် အလုပ်က ထွက်လိုက်တယ်။ ကျွန်တော် အဲဒါကို ဆက်သည်းမခံနိုင်တော့လိုပါ။

After quitting my job, I decided to organize my friends

ကျွန်တော့ အလုပ်ကို ရပ်လိုက်တဲ့နောက်မှာ နိုင်ငံ့ထဲက အကြမ်းဖက်မှုတွေကို၊

to speak about the violence in the country,

အမျိုးသားရေး အခြေအနေကို ပြောကြရန်

to speak about the state of the nation,

ကျွန်တော့ မိတ်ဆွေတွေကို လိုက်ပြီး စည်းရုံးခဲ့ရာ၊

and June 1, 2009 was the day that we were meant to go to the stadium

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ ၂၀၀၉ ခုနှစ် ဇွန် ၁ ရက်မှာ အားကစားရုံကို သွားဖို့ စီစဉ်ခဲ့ကြတယ်၊

and try and get the president's attention.

သမ္မတရဲ့ အာရုံကို မိမိတို့ဆီကို စွဲဆောင်ရန်ပါ။

It's a national holiday,

အဲဒါဟာ အမျိုးသား နေ့ထူးဖြစ်ပြီး၊

it's broadcast across the country,

တနိုင်ငံလုံး အဝှမ်း ထုတ်လွှင့်ပါတယ်၊

and I showed up at the stadium.

အဲဒါနဲ့ ကျွန်တော် အားကစားရုံကို ရောက်လာတယ်။

My friends did not show up.

ကျွန်တော့ သူငယ်ချင်းတွေကို မမြင်ခဲ့ရပါ။

I found myself alone,

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ တယောက်တည်း ဖြစ်နေတယ်၊

and I didn't know what to do.

ဘာလုပ်ရမှန်း မသိခဲ့ပါ။

I was scared,

ကျွန်တော် ကြောက်နေခဲ့တယ်၊

but I knew very well that that particular day,

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒီတချိန်တည်းမှာ၊ အဲဒီနေ့မှာ ကျွန်တော်ဟာ

I had to make a decision.

ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက် တခုကို ချမှတ်ရန် လိုခဲ့တာကို နားလည်ခဲ့တယ်။

Was I able to live as a coward, like everyone else,

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ သူများတွေလို ဆက်ပြီး ကြောက်သူ အဖြစ်ဆက်နေမှာလား၊

or was I going to make a stand?

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ကိုယ့်ဘာသာကိုယ် ရပ်တည်မှာလား?

And when the president stood up to speak,

သမ္မတက မိန့်ခွန်းပြောရန် ထရပ်လိုက်တာနဲ့၊

I found myself on my feet shouting at the president,

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ မတ်တပ်ရပ်လျက် သမ္မတဆီ အော်ဟစ်နေတာကို တွေ့လိုက်တယ်၊

telling him to remember the post-election violence victims,

ရွေးကောက်ပွဲ နောက်ပိုင်း အကြမ်းဖက်မှုတွေကို သတိရနေဖို့၊

to stop the corruption.

ချစားမှုတွေကို ရပ်စဲပစ်ဖို့ တောင်းဆိုခဲ့တယ်။

And suddenly, out of nowhere,

ရုတ်ခနဲဆိုသလို ပုလိပ်တွေဟာ ဆာလောင်နေတဲ့ ခြင်္သေ့တွေလို

the police pounced on me like hungry lions.

ကျွန်တော့အပေါ်ကို ခုန်အုပ်လိုက်ကြပါတယ်။

They held my mouth

သူတို့ဟာ ကျွန်တော့ ပါးစပ်ကို ပိတ်ပစ်လိုက်ကြကာ

and dragged me out of the stadium,

အားကစားရုံ အထဲကနေပြီး ဆွဲခေါ်သွားကြတယ်၊

where they thoroughly beat me up and locked me up in jail.

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော့ကို စိတ်ကြိုက် ရိုက်နှက်ခဲ့ကြပြီး

I spent that night in a cold cement floor in the jail,

အဲဒီညမှာ ကျွန်တော်ဟာ ထောင်ရဲ့ အေးစက်နေတဲ့ ကြမ်းပြင်ပေါ်မှာ လှဲနေခဲ့ရတယ်၊

and that got me thinking.

အဲဒီအချိန်မှာ ကျွန်တော် စဉ်းစားလာရပါတယ်။

What was making me feel this way?

ကျွန်တော် အဲဒီလို ခံစာလာရတာ ဘာကြောင့်လဲ?

My friends and family thought I was crazy because of what I did,

ကျွန်တော် လုပ်လိုက်တာတွေကြောင့် မိတ်ဆွေတွေနဲ့

and the images that I took were disturbing my life.

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော် ရိုက်ယူခဲ့တဲ့ ပုံတွေကြောင့်လည်း စိတ်ညစ်ခဲ့ရတယ်။

The images that I took were just a number to many Kenyans.

တကယ်တော့ ကျွန်တော့ ရိုက်ခဲ့တဲ့ ပုံတွေဟာ ကင်ညာလူမျိုး အများကြီးထဲက တချို့မျှပါ။

Most Kenyans did not see the violence.

ကင်ညာ လူမျိုး အများစုတို့ဟာ အကြမ်းဖက်မှုကို မမြင်ခဲ့ကြရပါ။

It was a story to them.

အဲဒါဟာ သူတို့အတွက် ပုံပြင်နဲ့ တူခဲ့တယ်။

And so I decided to actually start a street exhibition

to show the images of the violence across the country

အကြမ်းဖက်မှု ဓာတ်ပုံတွေကို တနိုင်လုံး အဝှမ်းမှာ ပြပေးခြင်းဖြင့်

and get people talking about it.

ပြည်သူတွေ အဲဒီအကြောင်း ပြောဆိုလာအောင် လှုံ့ဆော်ဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်ပါတယ်။

We traveled the country and showed the images,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ နိုင်ငံ့ထဲမှာ ခရီးထွက်လျက် ပုံတွေကို ပြသခဲ့ကြတယ်၊

and this was a journey that has started me to the activist path,

အဲဒီ ခရီးကမှ ကျွန်တော့ကို တက်ကြွစွာ လှုပ်ရှားမှု ခရီးပေါ်ကို တင်ပေးလိုက်တာပါ၊

where I decided to become silent no more,

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ ဆက်ပြီး နှုတ်ငုံမနေတော့ရန်၊

to talk about those things.

အဲဒီအကြောင်းတွေကို ဆွေးနွေးပြောပြရန် ဆုံးဖြတ်လိုက်ပါတယ်။

We traveled, and our general site from our street exhibit

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ခရီးထွက်လှည့်လည်ခဲ့ကြတယ်၊ ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ အထွေထွေ ဆိုက်ဟာ

became for political graffiti about the situation in the country,

လမ်းပေါ်က ပြပွဲတွေကနေပြီး နိုင်ငံ့ထဲက အခြေအနေ အကြောင်း ကားချပ်ပုံ၊

talking about corruption, bad leadership.

ချစားမှု နဲ့ ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေ ညံ့ဖျင်းမှု အကြောင်း ဆွေးနွေးတဲ့ ဆိုက်ဖြစ်လာတယ်။

We have even done symbolic burials.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ သရုပ်ြပ သင်္ဂြိုဟ်မှုကိုလည်း လုပ်ခဲ့ကြပါသေးတယ်။

We have delivered live pigs to Kenya's parliament

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ ကင်ညာ ပါလီမန်ဆီကို ဝက်ကောင်တွေကို ပို့ပေးခဲ့ကြတယ်၊

as a symbol of our politicians' greed.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ နိုင်ငံရေးသမားတွေရဲ့ လောဘကြီးမှုကို ပြသပေးရန် အတွက်ပါ။

It has been done in Uganda and other countries,

အဲဒီလို ယူဂန်ဒါ နဲ့ အခြားနိုင်ငံတွေမှာပါ ပြုလုပ်ခဲ့ကြပါတယ်၊

and what is most powerful is that the images have been picked by the media

အားရစရာ အကောင်းဆုံးက ပုံတွေကို မီဒီယာတွေက ယူပြီး ပြသလာကြတယ်၊

and amplified across the country, across the continent.

နိုင်ငံ့တဝှမ်းလံးမှာ၊ တတိုက်လုံးမှာ အကျယ်တ၀င့် ပြသပေးခဲ့ကြတယ်။

Where I used to stand up alone seven years ago,

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ခုနစ်နှစ်တုန်းက ကျွန်တော် ရပ်လိုက်စဉ် တယောက်တည်း ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပေမဲ့၊

now I belong to a community of many people who stand up with me.

အခုတော့ ကျွန်တော်နဲ့အတူ ရပ်နေတာက လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းကြီး တခုပါ။

အဲဒီလို အကြောင်းတွေကို ပြောဖို့ ရပ်လိုက်ချိန်မှာ

I am no longer alone when I stand up to speak about these things.

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ ကိုယ့်နိုင်ငံအတွက် စိတ်လိုက်မာန်ပါ

I belong to a group of young people who are passionate about the country,

လုပ်ချင်ကြကာ၊ အပြောင်းအလဲတွေကို လုပ်လိုကြပြီး၊

who want to bring about change,

ကြောက်ရွံ့ခြင်း မရှိကြတော့တဲ့ ငကြောက်ကောင်တွေ မဟုတ်ကြတော့တဲ့

and they're no longer afraid, and they're no longer smart cowards.

လူငယ်တွေဟာ ကျွန်တော့်ကို ဝန်းရံလျက် ရှိနေကြပါတယ်။

So that was my story.

ကျွန်တော့ရဲ့ ပုံပြင်က အဲဒီလိုရှိပါတယ်။

That day in the stadium,

အားကစားရုံထဲက ဟိုတနေ့တုန်းက

I stood up as a smart coward.

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ ငကြောက်ကောင် အဖြစ် ရပ်နေခဲ့သူပါ။

By that one action, I said goodbye to the 24 years living as a coward.

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒီလုပ်ဆောင်ချက်တစ်ခုနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်ဟာ

There are two most powerful days in your life:

လူတိုင်းရဲ့ ဘဝထဲမှာ အဆုံးအဖြတ်ပေးတတ်တဲ့ နေ့ဆိုလို့ နှစ်ရက် ရှိပါတယ်-

the day you're born, and the day you discover why.

ပထမက ကျွန်တော်တို့ မွေးတဲ့နေ့ပါ၊ နောက်တခုက

ဘာအတွက်လဲ ဆိုတာကို သိလာတဲ့နေ့ပါ။

That day standing up in that stadium shouting at the President,

အားကစားရုံထဲမှာ ရပ်နေပြီး သမ္မတကို အော်ဟစ်နေခဲ့တဲ့ နေ့မှာ

I discovered why I was truly born,

ကျွန်တော် မွေးခဲ့ရခြင်းရဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်းကို ကျွန်တော် သိလာခဲ့တယ်၊

that I would no longer be silent in the face of injustice.

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ မတရားလုပ်နေတာတွေကို နှုတ်ငုံနေမှာ မဟုတ်ဘူး ဆိုတာပါ။

Boniface Mwangi: So we have this community of filmmakers,

graffiti artists, musicians, and when there's an issue in the country,

we come together, we brainstorm, and take up on that issue.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ စုဝေးလျက် စဉ်းစားကြကာ အဲဒီပြဿနာကို ဆွေးနွေးကြတယ်။

So our most powerful tool is art,

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ အားအကောင်းဆုံး လက်နက်က အနုပညာပါပဲ၊

because we live in a very busy world where people are so busy in their life,

ကမ္ဘာကြီးပေါ်မှာ လူတွေဟာ အလုပ်များနေကြကာ လူတိုင်းဟာ သူ့ဘဝနဲ့ ရှုပ်ရှက်ခတ်နေပါတယ်၊

and they don't have time to read.

သူတို့ဟာ ဖတ်ဖို့တောင် အချိန် မရှိကြပါဘူး။

So we package our activism and we package our message in art.

အဲဒါကြောင့်မို့လို့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ လှုပ်ရှားမှုတွေကို ပြောလိုတာကို အနုပညာအဖြစ် တင်ဆက်ကြတယ်။

So from the music, the graffiti, the art, that's what we do.

BM: In spite of being arrested, beaten up, threatened,

the moment I discovered my voice,

ကျွန်တော့ဆီမှာ အသံဆိုတာ ရှိတာကို ကျွန်တော် နားလည်လိုက်လို့၊

ကျွန်တော် ယုံကြည်တာအတွက် ကျွန်တော် ရပ်တည်နိုင်တာကို

I'm no longer afraid.

နားလည်လာတဲ့ နောက်မှာ ကျွန်တော် ဆက်မကြောက်တော့ပါဘူး။

I used to be called softy, but I'm no longer softy,

ကျွန်တော့ကို softy လို့ ခေါ်ခဲ့ကြပေမဲ့၊ ကျွန်တော်ဟာ softy မဟုတ်တော့ပါ၊

because I discovered who I really am, as in, that's what I want to do,

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ တကယ့်တွင် ဘယ်သူလဲ၊ ဘာလုပ်ချင်တယ် ဆိုတာကို သိနားလည်ခဲ့ကာ

and there's such beauty in doing that.

There's nothing as powerful as that, knowing that I'm meant to do this,

because you don't get scared, you just continue living your life.
