Imagine you're walking through a forest.

but a forest is much more than what you see,

and today I want to change the way you think about forests.

You see, underground there is this other world,

How do I know this?

Here's my story.

I grew up in the forests of British Columbia.

I used to lay on the forest floor and stare up at the tree crowns.

But soon I found myself working alongside the powerful people

The extent of the clear-cutting

and I soon found myself conflicted by my part in it.

Not only that, the spraying and hacking of the aspens and birches

to make way for the more commercially valuable planted pines and firs

was astounding.

It seemed that nothing could stop this relentless industrial machine.

So I went back to school,

and I had a really hard time getting research funding.

And then I borrowed some high-tech stuff from my university:

Oh, and I forgot some stuff,

important stuff: the bug spray,

The first day of the experiment, we got out to our plot

and a grizzly bear and her cub chased us off.

But you know, this is how forest research in Canada goes.

So I came back the next day,

I used two isotopes,

I figured it would take this long

The birch had taken up the radioactive gas.

Then the moment of truth.

and I heard the most beautiful sound.

It was the sound of birch talking to fir,

and birch was saying, "Hey, can I help you?"

And fir was saying, "Yeah, can you send me some of your carbon?

I went up to cedar, and I ran the Geiger counter over its leaves,

And then in later experiments, we found the opposite,

that fir was sending more carbon to birch than birch was sending to fir,

and this was because the fir was still growing while the birch was leafless.

So it turns out the two species were interdependent,

And at that moment, everything came into focus for me.

I knew I had found something big,

something that would change the way we look at how trees interact in forests,

And I had found solid evidence

of this massive belowground communications network,

Now, I truly hoped and believed

that my discovery would change how we practice forestry,

from clear-cutting and herbiciding

to more holistic and sustainable methods,

methods that were less expensive and more practical.

So how do we do science in complex systems like forests?

သစ်တောလို ရှုပ်ထွေးလှတဲ့ စနစ်တွေထဲမယ် သိပ္ပံနည်းကျ ဘယ်လို လုပ်ကိုင်ကြမလဲ။

Well, as forest scientists, we have to do our research in the forests,

သစ်တောဆိုင်ရာ သုတေသနီ အားလုံးတို့ဟာ မိမိတို့ရဲ့ သုတေသနတွေကို သစ်တောထဲ

and that's really tough, as I've shown you.

And we have to be really good at running from bears.

But mostly, we have to persevere

And we have to follow our intuition and our experiences

For me, I've conducted and published hundreds of experiments in the forest.

So now I want to talk about the science.

How were paper birch and Douglas fir communicating?

Well, it turns out they were conversing not only in the language of carbon

but also nitrogen and phosphorus

and water and defense signals and allele chemicals and hormones --

And you know, I have to tell you, before me, scientists had thought

that this belowground mutualistic symbiosis called a mycorrhiza

was involved.

Mycorrhiza literally means "fungus root."

You see their reproductive organs when you walk through the forest.

သစ်တောထဲ လမ်းလျှောက်ရင် သူတို့ရဲ့ မျိုးပွားရေး အင်္ဂါများကို မြင်ခဲ့ကြလား။

They're the mushrooms.

အဲဒါက မှိုတွေပါ။

The mushrooms, though, are just the tip of the iceberg,

အဲဒီမှိုတွေဟာ တကယ်တော့ ရေခဲတောင်ကြီးရဲ့ ထိပ်ပိုင်းမျှပါ၊

because coming out of those stems are fungal threads that form a mycelium,

and that mycelium infects and colonizes the roots

of all the trees and plants.

And where the fungal cells interact with the root cells,

there's a trade of carbon for nutrients,

and that fungus gets those nutrients by growing through the soil

individuals not only of the same species but between species, like birch and fir,

and it works kind of like the Internet.

You see, like all networks,

mycorrhizal networks have nodes and links.

We made this map by examining the short sequences of DNA

of every tree and every fungal individual in a patch of Douglas fir forest.

In a single forest, a mother tree can be connected to hundreds of other trees.

And using our isotope tracers,

we have found that mother trees

will send their excess carbon through the mycorrhizal network

to the understory seedlings,

and we've associated this with increased seedling survival

by four times.

Now, we know we all favor our own children,

and I wondered, could Douglas fir recognize its own kin,

like mama grizzly and her cub?

So we set about an experiment,

and we grew mother trees with kin and stranger's seedlings.

And it turns out they do recognize their kin.

Mother trees colonize their kin with bigger mycorrhizal networks.

They send them more carbon below ground.

They even reduce their own root competition

to make elbow room for their kids.

When mother trees are injured or dying,

they also send messages of wisdom on to the next generation of seedlings.

So we've used isotope tracing

to trace carbon moving from an injured mother tree

down her trunk into the mycorrhizal network

not only carbon but also defense signals.

And these two compounds

have increased the resistance of those seedlings to future stresses.

Forests aren't simply collections of trees,

they're complex systems with hubs and networks

that overlap and connect trees and allow them to communicate,

and they provide avenues for feedbacks and adaptation,

and this makes the forest resilient.

That's because there are many hub trees and many overlapping networks.

But they're also vulnerable,

vulnerable not only to natural disturbances

like bark beetles that preferentially attack big old trees

but high-grade logging and clear-cut logging.

You see, you can take out one or two hub trees,

So, remember I said earlier that I hoped that my research,

my discoveries would change the way we practice forestry.

Well, I want to take a check on that 30 years later here in western Canada.

This is about 100 kilometers to the west of us,

It's not so pristine.

In 2014, the World Resources Institute reported that Canada in the past decade

has had the highest forest disturbance rate of any country worldwide,

and I bet you thought it was Brazil.

In Canada, it's 3.6 percent per year.

Now, by my estimation, that's about four times the rate that is sustainable.

Now, massive disturbance at this scale is known to affect hydrological cycles,

degrade wildlife habitat,

အဲဒါက ပြုန်းတီးမှုကို တိုးလာစေကာ အပင်တွေကို ပိုပြီး သေစေနိုင်တယ်။

အဲဒါ့အပြင်၊ ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အပင် တစ်မျိုး နှစ်မျိုးကိုသာ စိုက်ပျိုးနေကြကာ

Not only that, we're continuing to plant one or two species

and weed out the aspens and birches.

ပေါ့ပလား နဲ့ ဘုဇပတ် ပင်တွေကို နှုတ်ပစ်ကြတယ်။

အဲဒီလို ရိုးရှင်းတဲ့ နည်းဖြင့် သစ်တောကို စိုက်မှုဟာ ရှုပ်ထွေးမှု နည်းလာနေရာ

These simplified forests lack complexity,

and they're really vulnerable to infections and bugs.

ကူးစက်ရောဂါများ ပိုးကောင်များရဲ့ အန္တရာယ်ကို တကယ့်ကို ကြောက်ရပါတယ်။

And as climate changes,

ရာသီဥတု ပြောင်းလာတာနဲ့ အမျှ

this is creating a perfect storm

အဲဒါဟာ တကယ့် သဘာဝ မုန်တိုင်းကို၊

for extreme events, like the massive mountain pine beetle outbreak

မြောက် အမေရိက တစ်ခုလုံး ရင်ဆိုင်ခဲ့ရတဲ့ တောင်ပေါ် ထင်ရှူးပင်တွေ အပေါ် ကျခဲ့တဲ့

that just swept across North America,

ပိုးကောင်တွေလို ကပ်ရောဂါမျိုး

or that megafire in the last couple months in Alberta.

ဒါမှမဟုတ် မကြာမီက အလ်ဘဲရ်တာမှာ မြင်ခဲ့ကြရတဲ့ တောမီးမျိုး ဖြစ်လာနိုင်တယ်။

So I want to come back to my final question:

ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်မဟာ နောက်ဆုံး မေးခွန်းကို ပြန်မေးချင်ပါတယ်-

instead of weakening our forests,

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ သစ်တောတွေကို အားနည်းအောင်

how can we reinforce them and help them deal with climate change?

လုပ်မယ့်အစား ရာသီဥတု ပြောင်းလဲမှုကို ရင်ဆိုင်နိုင်အောင် ဘယ်လိုကူပေးကြမလဲ။

Well, you know, the great thing about forests as complex systems

ကောင်းတဲ့ အချက်က သစ်တောလို ရှုပ်ထွေးတဲ့ စနစ်တွေဟာ မိမိဘာသာမိမိ

is they have enormous capacity to self-heal.

ကုစားနိုင်တဲ့ ဧရာမစွမ်းပကား ရှိကြတယ် ဆိုတဲ့ အချက်ပါပဲ။

မကြာမီက ကျွန်မတို့ လုပ်ခဲ့တဲ့ စမ်းသပ်မှုတွေထဲမှာ

In our recent experiments,

we found with patch-cutting and retention of hub trees

အကွက်လိုက် သစ်ခုတ်လျက် ဗဟိုချက် အပင်တွေကို ထိန်းထားကာ

and regeneration to a diversity of species and genes and genotypes

mycorrhizal ကွန်ရက်များကို ပံ့ပိုးကြမယ့် ဗီဇ နှင့် ပုံစံမျိုးစုံ အပင်များကို

that these mycorrhizal networks, they recover really rapidly.

ပြန်လည် စိုက်ပျိုးပေးကြမယ်ဆိုရင် ၎င်းတို့ဟာ လျင်မြန်စွာ ပေါက်လာကြမှာပါ။

So with this in mind, I want to leave you with four simple solutions.

ဒီတော့ အဲဒါကို ဦးနှောက်ထဲ ထည့်ထာလျက်၊ ရိုးရှင်တဲ့ နည်း လေးခုကို ဖေါ်ပြချင်ပါတယ်။

And we can't kid ourselves that these are too complicated to act on.

ဒါတွေကို လုပ်ဆောင်ရန် သိပ်ကို ခဲယဉ်းမယ် ဆိုပြီး ငြင်းကွယ်လို့ မရနိုင်ပါ။

First, we all need to get out in the forest.

ပထမ အနေနဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့ အားလုံး သစ်တောကို သွားကြရန် လိုတယ်။

We need to reestablish local involvement in our own forests.

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ သစ်တောတွေထဲမှာ ဒေသထဲက ပြည်သူတွေ ပါဝင်ရန် လိုပါတယ်။

You see, most of our forests now

ရှင်တို့ မြင်နိုင်ကြသလို သစ်တောတွေကို

are managed using a one-size-fits-all approach,

အားလုံးကို တစ်ပုံစံတည်းဖြင့် ချဉ်းကပ် လုပ်ကိုင်နေပါတယ်၊

but good forest stewardship requires knowledge of local conditions.

ဒါပေမဲ့ သစ်တောကို ကောင်းမွန်စွာ စောင့်ရှောက်ရန် ဒေသခံ အခြေအနေကို သိရပါမယ်။

Second, we need to save our old-growth forests.

ဒုတိယ အနေနဲ့၊ ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ သစ်တောဟောင်းတွေကို ကယ်ဆယ်ကြရမယ်။

These are the repositories of genes and mother trees and mycorrhizal networks.

၎င်းတို့ဟာ ဗီဇမျိုးများ နဲ့ မိခင်အပင်များ mycorrhiza ကွန်ရက်များ ရှိတဲ့ နေရာတွေပါ။

So this means less cutting.

ဒီတော့ သစ်ခုတ်မှု နည်းလာရပါမယ်။

I don't mean no cutting, but less cutting.

လုံးဝ မခုတ်ရလို့ မဆိုလိုဘဲ လျှော့ရန် လိုပါတယ်။

And third, when we do cut,

တတိယ အနေနဲ့၊ ခုတ်ရမယ်ဆိုရင်၊

we need to save the legacies,

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ရိုးရာကို၊

မိခင် အပင်များ နဲ့ ကွန်ရက်များကို

the mother trees and networks,

and the wood, the genes,

မျိုးရိုးဗီဇများကို ထိန်းသိမ်းပေးကာ

so they can pass their wisdom onto the next generation of trees

၎င်းတို့ရဲ့ အမြော်အမြင်ကို မျိုးဆက်အသစ် အပင်များဆီ လွှဲပြောင်းပေးစေရန်

so they can withstand the future stresses coming down the road.

၎င်းတို့အနေနဲ့ ရင်ဆိုင်လာရမယ့် အနာဂတ် ဖိစီးမှုများကို ရင်ဆိုင်နိုင်ရန် လိုပါတယ်။

We need to be conservationists.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ထိန်းသိမ်းလိုသူများ ဖြစ်ကြရပါမယ်။

And finally, fourthly and finally,

နောက်ဆုံး အနေနဲ့၊ စတုတ္ထအနေနဲ့၊

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ သစ်တောကို အပင် အမျိုးအစား၊ မျိုးရိုးဗီဇ နဲ့ တည်ဆောက်မှုအရ

we need to regenerate our forests with a diversity of species

and genotypes and structures

မျိုးစုံစွာဖြင့် ပြန်လည် စိုက်ပျိုးရန် လိုပြီး

by planting and allowing natural regeneration.

သဘာဝကျစွာ ပြန်လည် ပေါက်ရောက်မှုကို အားပေးကြရပါမယ်။

We have to give Mother Nature the tools she needs

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ဘဘာဝမိခင်ကြီးအား ကိုယ့်ကိုကိုယ် ကုစားရန်

to use her intelligence to self-heal.

ကုစားရန် လိုအပ်တဲ့ ကိရိယာတွေကို ပေးအပ်ရန် လိုပါတယ်။

ပြီးတော့ သစ်တော ဆိုတာ အချင်းချင်း ပြိုင်ဆိုင်နေကြတဲ့ အပင်တွေ မဟုတ်ဘဲ

And we need to remember that forests aren't just a bunch of trees

ဆူပါပူးပေါင်း ဆောင်ရွက်မှု ရှိကြတဲ့ အပင်များ

competing with each other,

they're supercooperators.

စုစည်းနေတဲ့ နေရာဖြစ်တာကို သိနားလည်ရန် လိုပါတယ်။

So back to Jigs.

ကျွန်မ ရဲ့ Jigs ဆီ ပြန်သွားမယ်။

Jigs's fall into the outhouse showed me this other world,

Jigs ဟာ အိမ်နားမှာ တွင်းထဲ လဲကျသွားကာ ကျွန်မကို ကမ္ဘာကြီး တစ်မျိုးကို ပြခဲ့တယ်၊

and it changed my view of forests.

အဲဒါက သစ်တော အပေါ်ထားရှိတဲ့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ အမြင်ကို ပြောင်းပစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

I hope today to have changed how you think about forests.
